Welcome to Mintfest 2012
Despite the ‘curse of the Olympics’ bringing the worst summer weather in
living memory, we’re back with Kendal’s annual extravaganza of street arts.
This year’s festival features a packed programme of more than 70 acts from
Cumbria, Britain, Europe and further afield. It is the finale of Lakes Alive, our
4-year Olympic-related programme, which has been made possible thanks
to funding from Legacy Trust UK and others.
Once again, the town centre will be jam-packed with some of the best street
theatre and dance in the world whilst Noble’s Rest will be the venue for the
decidedly eccentric Firemasters from Belgium. However Kirkland will be
the beating heart of Mintfest this year with performances and installations
around Abbot Hall Gallery, in the Park (including a return visit by the
wonderful Circus Ronaldo) and along the river. Plus there is music and
late-night entertainment at The Brewery and an igloo being made entirely of
Mintcake in K Village.
We hope you will join us for another great weekend of street art at Kendal’s
biggest open-air event.
Have a great time.

Top tips for a ‘Mint’ fest
1 Plan what
you want to see
in advance. This
programme has
listings of all events
& there is a day-byday breakdown at the
back.
2 Bring a raincoat
and sunscreen – the
weather can change
very quickly. Please
avoid using umbrellas
which block the view
for others.
3 We want as many
people to see the
shows as possible
so please help by
sitting down or
moving towards the
back to let smaller
people and children
see. Please actively
encourage others
to do the same. You
might want to bring
a camping chair or
something comfy to
sit on, and there are
also sitmats available
to borrow at some of
the sites.
4 Use the Info Tents
marked on the map
if you need help with
anything (you can
also fill in gift aid
forms or buy a limited
edition T Shirt, pin
badge or piggy bank
there). Our team (in
Mintfest T Shirts) are
here to help so please
do ask them anything
you need to know.
5 If you don’t know
Kendal there is a
map in the back of
this booklet to help
you get around. The
locals are a very
friendly bunch so
if you’re looking
for somewhere in
particular do ask a
passer-by.
6 Toilets are also
marked on the map.
These outlets have
all kindly agreed to
allow audiences to
use them during their
usual opening hours
so you don’t even
need to pretend to
be buying anything
(although we’re sure
they’d appreciate
it if you did). The
Miles Thompson and
Wakefield Arms are
open throughout
festival opening hours
and there are also
portable toilets in
Abbot Hall Park and
Noble’s Rest.
7 There are plenty of
lovely shops and food
outlets in Kendal as
well as catering stalls
in various locations
so make the most of
them. Eat and drink
plenty to keep your
energy up for the full
festival weekend.
8 If you have any
specific access
requirements or need
further information
to get the most from
your visit do get
in touch at mail@
lakesalive.org and
we’ll do our best to
make your visit as
enjoyable as possible.
9 We’re on
Facebook, Twitter &
Flickr (under Lakes
Alive) so please
communicate with
us before, during and
after the festival and
let us know what you
think. For Twitter
please use the
hashtag Mintfest12
We’ll be tweeting
throughout the
festival with updates
too.

Invisible Circus: No Dress Rehearsal is an inspirational
feature doc from first-time director Naomi Smyth.
Charismatic ringmaster Doug Francis leads his anarchist

not impossible, we’re not interested’. The 3 year span of the
film takes them from chaotic squat crew to licensed building
managers with huge show budgets- via rotting garages,
crumbling cathedrals and finally a takeover of Bristol’s

As you’ll be aware most of Mintfest is free thanks to the support
of our funders, sponsors and many other individuals and
organisations. We would like to keep it that way. As you make your
journey through the festival, please consider what other similar
entertainment (a meal, a movie, a concert or football match) might
cost you and give generously to our collection buckets to help keep
the festival free in the future.
Big Give
We’re once again taking part in The Big Give
which means all donations from our bucket
collections this year will be matched poundfor-pound in December from other sources
- so there really has never been a better
time to donate to us.
