There seems to be an underlying belief that the zonal representatives do not attend Board meetings or attend events in the Brisbane and surrounding areas. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Zonal representatives are flown down to Brisbane to attend the monthly Board meetings of Dogs Queensland. If any Director is unable to be in physical attendance at a meeting, the options of Skype or phone conferencing are available for them to use. I trust that this clears the misconception up for any member. However, if there are any further questions, please feel free to contact myself or the office for clarification. Please do not allow the perpetual ‘rumour mill’ to continue, as there is a definite level of misinformation that people are being fed. Dogs Queensland will soon be releasing Codes of Practice for breeders and members. It is important that all members take the time to read through these documents, and fully understand their contents, particularly in relation to the impact it has on them and their current practices. The Dogs Queensland membership renewal forms will be changed by the end of this year, so all members will have to acknowledge that they are operating in accordance with the Codes of Practice. The documents are especially relevant given the pending legislation from the Queensland Government in relation to puppy farming, which will soon be before the Queensland parliament. Over the last few months there have been a number of reported cases of unsportsmanlike behaviour, and, in fact, quite aggressive behaviour, that has been demonstrated during the course of exhibitions, and also via other means, such as social media. I would like to remind members of the following: Code of Ethics 2.t.iii As a member it is incumbent on me to also abide by the following requirements: • Conduct myself politely and with integrity at CCC(Q) approved events; • Conduct myself in a sportsmanlike manner at such events and in any related activities or communications; • Respect the reputations of other members, including judges, at CCC(Q) approved events and in dealings in wider forums, including chat lists on the internet and in other communications; Rule 224 Any person causing annoyance by loud comments on the decision of the Judges or being guilty of unsportsmanlike action while in the precincts of an exhibition shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules and may, after being cautioned by a member of the Show committee or other official of the show, be ordered to leave the Show. If such person fails to comply with such order they shall be guilty of a further offence against these Rules. With our hobby already on the decline, we should be trying to encourage people to join, not scaring potential members away with displays of behaviour, that are in direct breach of our rules and code of ethics. I urge members to be more considerate and respectful of one another, for the sake of our hobby. Any Clubs wishing to submit Agenda items for this meeting should submit them to the CCC(Q) Ltd office prior to Monday 29th June 2015. Food Handling Certificate For any Schedule submitted from 1 September, all Clubs Catering at Durack would require a representative to hold a Food Handling Certificate, it was agreed that the Secretary would look into some courses to assist Clubs; The Durack Committee have recommended this one for members, it is free and it is recognised by the Brisbane City Council. http://www.brisbane.imalert.com.au/ The Food Handling Certificate of the nominated representative must be lodged with the Schedule. Show Managers All Members are asked to note the policy that all Show Managers are required to renew their accreditation periodically or they would not be allowed to continue to be a Show Manager, this was essential from an Insurance point of view. Details of upcoming refresher sessions will be provided as and when they are scheduled. Zonal Shows All Clubs are asked to note that where they reside in a particular Zone, they would be obliged to hold their Shows in their particular Zone unless dispensation had been applied for and granted by the Board. The Zones are defined in the Dogs Queensland Constitution and I reproduce below; 74 State Zones 74.1 For the purposes of this Constitution, the State shall be divided into three (3) Zones. 74.2 The Zones shall be defined as follows: (1) Zone 1: The area from the QLD/NSW border to the latitude 4 - June 2015 26.18 degrees South, including Gympie; (2) Zone 2: The area north of latitude 26.18 degrees South to latitude 21 degrees South; and (3) Zone 3: The area north of latitude 21 degrees South to the northern most part of the State. Vehicle Parking Policy – Durack All Members are asked to take note of the following policy that is effective immediately; In general, the parking of vehicles on the Dogs Queensland Dog Sports Grounds at Durack is unregulated with members and visitors being able to park their cars in most areas. However, there are specific areas on the grounds that must have restrictions because those areas are utilised for officials or specific activities. For example, the following areas are fully restricted to only those people that have approval to park in these areas: • Disabled Parking Zone – nobody without a recognised Government issued disabled parking permit being displayed is permitted to park their vehicle in this area, • Loading Zone – nobody who is not in the process of the immediate loading or unloading of passengers or event related items for a period of 10 minutes or less is permitted to park their vehicle in that area, • Vendors Area – only Dogs Queensland approved, contracted vendors are permitted to park their vehicle in this area. There will be no parking of vehicles on any vendor’s site if that site is not in use by a vendor on any day when events are being held, and • Designated Camping Area – only approved members who have booked and paid for a tent camping site are permitted to park one vehicle in this area. Unapproved Parking Procedure If any vehicle is parked in any of the 4 areas stated above, the following process will be followed: 1. A Grounds Committee appointed inspector will identify and record the exact offence from the 4 items above, the vehicle’s make, model, colour, registration number and possible owner’s name and/or their exhibitor number on the day. 2. An announcement will be made over the grounds’ loudspeaker with the details as stated in point 1 above and that the vehicle’s owner has 30 minutes from that point to move the vehicle or www.dogsqueensland.org.au Dogs Queensland Board Notes The Queensland Dog World further action will ensue. 3. If the 30 minutes noted in point 2 above has expired without the vehicle being moved, the details collected will be transposed onto the Vehicle Illegally Parked form, with the original being placed on the vehicle and a copy to be sent into the office on the next business day. at an appropriate function or event. The CCC(Q) Ltd Board of Directors will consider all nominations on their merit and with strict confidentiality. The Board sees the grant of Life Membership as honouring a member who has been truly outstanding in his or her support of Canine Affairs, particularly beyond that of a single Club. 4. The office will write a letter to the vehicle’s owner stating that a note has been taken of the details surrounding the parking offence and any future repeat offence will result in the invoicing of a $20.00 fine which may also result in the Dogs Queensland disciplinary process being invoked for a rules breach if this fine is not paid by the due date. The Board has now extended the deadline for further nominations for 2015 Dogs Queensland Life Memberships and nominations should be received in the Dogs Queensland Office no later than Monday 13th July 2015. 5. The fine will be monitored by the office and non-payments will be referred to a Breaches Panel for determination in relation to future suspension from showing at Durack. Note that administration fees will apply and interest From Constance Street, turn right from the road into the driveway and the ‘10 Minute’ parking bay immediately to the left is for use by all four offices in the complex and this is usually empty. If it is not available, please proceed directly under the building, straight ahead and park just by the back wall to the right next to the two garage doors, which are Dogs Queensland’s property. Zone 2 and Zone 3 Open Show Judges After receiving positive feedback from the Judges involved in the scheme, at the recent Board Meeting it was resolved that once again Clubs in Zone 1 would be offered reimbursement of the airfares to contract one of the Open Show Judges resident in Zone 2 or 3 for 2015/16. It is hoped that this would assist all Judges in our Northern areas. Each Club is offered the reimbursement for one Judge for the year; all fares would have to be approved by the Office prior to booking. Dogs Queensland Life Membership Life Membership may be granted to any member of Dogs Queensland who has rendered outstanding or special services to Dogs Queensland. That person shall retain membership of Dogs Queensland for their life unless otherwise determined by virtue of any exercise of disciplinary proceedings under the Dogs Queensland Rules. Dogs Queensland Office Parking If the business you wish to conduct is expected to take any longer than 10 minutes, please make an appointment with a Staff Member or Management, but please try to give us 24 hours notice so we can make arrangements and GUARANTEE you a car park space. If any member has difficulty walking up the stairs, they are encouraged to park their car and make their way to the bottom of the first stairway, where an intercom system is installed on the side of the wall. Please press the button and someone will answer you and service your needs, generally by coming down to greet you personally and handle any transaction that is required. Loyalty Pet Treats are a new sponsor for Dogs Queensland There are often questions that dog owners would like to know about the products offered by our sponsors. Below are a number of FAQs which will help to find out what’s so special about Loyalty Pet Treats. Loyalty Pet Treats are an Australian and Queensland based company, manufacturing a broad range of pet treats which are produced under HACCP accreditation. An interview with David and Julie, the owners of Loyalty Pet Treats provides some interesting insight into the Pet Treat Industry. Have you ever thought about who the manufacturers are and who onsells products from other manufacturers in Australia and overseas. If you are concerned about the products you offer to your canine pals, read on. Is Loyalty Pet Treats a manufacturer and what advantages are there for the consumer? We are an Australian pet treat company not simply marketers whose product is made by someone else and branded under another name. We guarantee all pet treats we sell are manufactured by us and we assure you of its composition and quality! All products are sourced directly through accredited Australian abattoirs and fisheries. We do not buy anyone else’s pet treat products and on sell them. Are Loyalty Pet Treats produced under accreditation and why is it important? Absolutely not, our treats are totally free of additives, they are pure 100% meat or offal. Why do some pet treats have a strong smell? It’s the way they are processed, as quickly as possible. Most are cooked at a high temperature. If Pet Treats smell, something is not right! Why are your products Ultra-Premium? Retrieving Trials Rule Update Effective from the 1st January 2015. The Rules are available online at: http://www.ankc.org.au/rules.aspx Retrieving Trials Retrieving trials are competitions using registered purebred Gundogs (eg Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Short-haired Pointers etc) where dogs and handlers are tested for obedience, and natural retrieving and hunting abilities. The trials are held on properties throughout South East Queensland and are set in areas that can as close as possible imitate natural hunting situations. The purpose of a retrieving trial is to test and determine the dog’s natural retrieving ability in the field, under natural conditions. Items to be retrieved are cast from a mechanical thrower and dogs must be able to determine the depth of the fall of the ‘game’ and then be able to hunt out the game, retrieve it and gently deliver it to the handler. All retrieving trials are held under the rules and regulations of the ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council), and are held in all states around Australia. All dogs entered must be over six months of age and trials are conducted by various Gundog Clubs during the year. Retrieving trials are conducted at five different levels, Beginners, Novice, Restricted, All Age and Championship. Beginners is the entrance level for new trialers. A Beginners test is a test for dogs that have not previously won a Beginners test or been placed in any other retrieving trial stake. A Beginners test consists of two runs (retrieves), one on land and one in or through water which is of sufficient depth for the dog to swim. Beginners handlers are generally given instruction on the procedure for the conduct of the test and shown the mechanics of the run over which the dog is required to compete. It is a great way to be introduced to the sport of retrieving trials. On the opposite end of the scale are the Championship stakes. One Championship stake is conducted in each state in Australia each year. The one exception is the year the National Retrieving Trial Championship is conducted in the state, which is held in addition to the state championship. A national championship has to consist of at least seven retrieves with at least 15 items of game two of which have to be blind finds where the dog has to be tested for steadiness from behind a hide. Championships are a great spectacle of working gundogs and generally attract many competitors from other states. Retrieving trials are a great way to see our gundogs exhibiting their natural ability in the field. All types of gundogs compete and at any trial you can see breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, Large Munsterlander, Brittany, Flat Coated, Retriever, Weimaraner and various other breeds of gundogs. 8 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Dogs Queensland Notices The Queensland Dog World Interested in Retrieving Trials ? A very small book ‘Hairless Dogs – A Complete Anthology of the Breeds 1850-1940’ covers a heap of info on these breeds but in no way compares with the other one mentioned. It’s a really small book at only twenty pages, but it tells the whole story. A Kennel Club Book ‘Xoloitzcuintle’ by Amy Fernandez is a Rare Breed Edition and contains just about everything there is to know about this National Breed of Mexico-history, breeding and showing etc. Similarly, another Kennel Club publication by Juliette Cunliffe ‘Chinese Crested’ covers everything about the breed from its origins, history and standards etc. There are other books on the Chinese Crested in the Library including ‘The Complete Chinese Crested’ by Brenda Jones, a leading breeder in the UK that was involved in the campaign to have both varieties of the breed – hairless and powder puff – recognised by the English Kennel Club. All books mentioned here are of course available in the Library at Durack. Visiting the Library Next month we have a whole lot of breeds to feature and I look forward to doing research on most if not all dogs for the July magazine. Thank you to those who continue to support the Library, I still push to have it relocted to a more ‘user friendly’ position within the Durack complex and your support for this is appreciated. Helen Acworth Librarian 12 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Book Review The Queensland Dog World This month’s member review is: ‘Hairless Dogs – The Naked Truth’ Written by Amy Fernandez and Kelly Rhae Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian I purchased this book for the Durack Library last year on the recommendation of a breeder and owner of Chinese Crested Dogs and Xoloitzcuintle. This is an amazing book, covering the history, etc of not only the Chinese Crested and Xoloitzcuintle but also includes the Peruvian Inca Orchid. I quote from the book’s introduction by Victor Joris (Shih Tzu breeder) who describes this book as the ‘most definitive and comprehensive history of hairless breeds ever written’. Hard to surpass that compliment! This is a book that does indeed give one the complete overall facts as well as the fiction. There are so many coloured photographs it is impossible not to be completely absorbed by its content. I found the chapter on the Development into Three Individual Breeds fascinating. The authors have exhausted every avenue of historical research and material published in this book has been authenticated and is an invaluable reference source for breeders, fanciers and judges. www.dogsqueensland.org.au June 2015 - 13 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Performance Hairless Chinese Crested Dogs Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Liz Grewal Performance dogs compete in Agility, Obedience, Rally-O Obedience, Flyball, Tracking and many other dog sports. These dogs are ‘true athletes’, as their fitness means less injuries, better performances, a lot of time spent with their owner learning to be part of a ‘team’ and working together to perfect their sport and learning all its intricacies. 14 - June 2015 Obedience is a team effort, of control and a dog learning to work in harmony with its owner, with very little verbal help. Rally-O is obedience with lots of verbal encouragement from the handler for the dog to do its best. Agility is where a dog learns to work with its owner in a pure team environment. The dog learns to watch the handlers feet, hips, arms, shoulder and head, PLUS listen to verbal commands at the same time and taking obstacles in its path at the direction of the handler and often turning to take on obstacles, from the back, back towards the handler, at the same time as running flat out. Yes these dogs MULTI TASK on the run and do it so easily. Very good handler/dog teams make it look effortless. There is a lot of training that goes into an Agility dog before it can even consider competing. These dogs learn to take a number of different style jumps, from going through a round Hoop/Tyre Jump, single one bar jump, Spread jump (two bars, one lower and one higher), Broad jump (boards raised on the ground), then www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Now THAT’S a Chinese Crested - a lean, muscled, elegant athlete with extreme streamlining. Even his head is streamlined with correct almond eyes. to running through a five metre tunnel that can be straight or a half circle or in an S bend, to Running up the dog walk — this is 1200mm off the ground, three metre up ramp, three metre across ramp and three metre down ramp and has to touch the first 1200mm on the up ramp and at the end of the down ramp. Then there is the Aframe which is shaped like an A and the dog runs up this and down the other side and has to touch in the 1st metre of the up side and last one metre of the down ramp, plus also learning to weave between twelve poles set 60cm apart and take these from the correct entry side of the ‘left hand side’ of the handler. When these dogs compete, they do not know the ‘layout’ of the course until the handler learns it, a matter of 10 - 15 minutes before the competition starts, so every course is different, as every judge sets their own courses, plus they set the ‘time frame’ in which the team have to complete the course. If you complete the course with ‘no mistakes’ and inside the time frame set by the Judge, then you get a ‘qualification’ towards earning www.dogsqueensland.org.au your title for that level of competition that you are competing at. I have two Hairless Chinese Crested Dogs that compete. Pepsi RN, CCD, AD, JDX, SD, GD, SPD — RN is Rally-O Novice title, CCD is Community Companion Dog Obedience, AD Novice Agilty dog, JDX Jumping dog Novice and Excellent levels, SD Novice Snooker Dog (Agility game) GD Novice Gambler Dog (Agility game) SPD Novice Strategic Pairs Dog (where two handlers and their dogs compete in a ‘tag team’ agility game on the one course). Pepsi is five and a half years old and has been training since he came to me at three months old and competing since he was eighteen months old. Ch Blackheath The Iceman AD - Iceman took his Show Championship at eight months old. He came to me at three and a half years old to learn to do Agility, Obedience and Rally-O. Iceman achieved his Novice Agility title at Armidale in April 2015 and is one qualification off his No vice Jumpers title and also his Novice Snooker title (Agility Game). He has been learning since he arrived to me and properly competing for fifteen months. June 2015 - 15 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Continued from page 15 This little dog had to learn that Agility is the EXACT opposite of all he learned as a puppy with his Show Career - e.g for Showing, he was on lead, fed, touched and ran the same triangle course every time in the ring, for Agility NO lead, NO food in the ring, NO touching in the ring and the course is different every time we compete. So learning all of this as an older dog was not easy for him, but his willingness to work and drive to do agility has been fantastic, making him a total darling of a dog to work with, train with and live with. This is a breed with a LOT of brains and like all dogs some want to work others don’t want to work, but they are a miniature sighthound, so having their attention and wanting to be with you is essential. This is a breed, where once you get on, they become ‘addictive’ and you want more. They are the BEST hotwater bottles in winter, as they never go cold, yes they LOVE to snuggle and be with their owners, but if not happy, they can climb like a cat and jump like a cat and can beome ‘Houdini escape artists’. These dogs have very different feet to other breeds, their joints are ‘longer’ and they use feet like hands. Their skin needs to be moisturised, e.g. coconut oil, to stop it becoming dry and it is actually ‘hide’ not skin. Their hair on the hairless dogs, is the same as ‘human hair’, it is NOT fur, it is shampoo’d and conditioned the same way. Their skin also gets pimples and blackheads, when not looked after correctly or their diet is not right for them. Yes we shave the face and body to groom them, as otherwise their body hair is not attractive on the hairless style. There is a haired variety called the Powderpuff and they have an undercoat and outer coat. They are born in the same litter when a Hairless and Powderpuff are mated. Yes they need to be kept warm with coats in the winter months and cooler nights. Yes they do sunburn if left in the sun for long periods of time, baby sunscreen can be used or use a ‘lycra sun suit’ to spend time in the sun and not sunburn. 16 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World The Mystery of the Chinese Crested Mouth Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Jo Tilbrook This unique breed is blessed with a number of what we term ‘breed characteristics’ which are often misunderstood by judges. The mouth of the Chinese Crested dog is the major problem for most judges because both our breed standard and breed extensions do not explain the hairless mouth clearly. There are hundreds of years of documented evidence establishing a link between the dominant hairless gene and a predisposition for missing teeth. The Australian breed standard quotes ‘MOUTH - Jaws strong with perfect, regular bite, i.e., the upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws’. The breed extension goes on to mention the presence of forward pointing tusks (canines) and the absence of some or all of the pre-molars. Lets start with the easy one, the Powder Puff. They should have a perfect scissor bite as described and full dentition. That’s as straight forward as it gets. The hairless mouth is the mystery the judges face. This term hairless mouth actually refers to a broad range of possibilities; to everything from a complete set of ‘hairless’ teeth, to a very sparse set of absolutely normal adult teeth and any combination in between. ‘Hairless’ teeth can be compared to big puppy teeth; rather primitive and peg-like incisors, no premolars, with distinctive tusk-like, pointed canine teeth. In addition, they usually have thin enamel and shallow root as well. Without the pressure of advancing adult teeth to push them out, premolars, as well as other puppy teeth, can remain firmly rooted in place for many years. Asymmetrical patterns of dentition and fused teeth are also not uncommon features of the ‘hairless’ mouth. Over the years I’ve occasional heard from other exhibitors that a particular judge after examining their dogs’ has commented how nice the dog is, its a shame about the mouth. Its a shame the judges aren’t provided the information in the first place in the breed standard in a clear, concise manner. A point to consider, some breeders believe the absence of forward pointing tusks in a hairless, demonstrates that the dog is not in-fact a truly hairless dog. The History of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Clelia Lercari This graceful, unique and faithful dog is the historic heir of a millenarian specie, declared today, National Patrimony Of Peru, and for the country`s pride, has been worldly recognised as a native ‘Peruvian Hairless Dog’ (PSPP) since June 12th, 1985 in Amsterdam, by the FCI and registered with Nº 310 under Group V, section 6, pertaining to the Primitive Type Breeds. Also on August 13th, 2013 the FCI officially recognised our Peruvian Hairless Dog Variety With Hair (PCPP), accepting worldwide, the basic genetic value these dogs have in this breed, preservation and their development, providing our hairless with new and vigorous reproduction. 18 - June 2015 Of the more than three thousand breed varieties registered until now, the denominated ‘Primitives’ (pure unchanged breeds whose genetic strength has permitted them to preserve their original morphological characteristics to remain unaltered in hundreds or thousands of years until our days) known in existence are only fifteen breeds. Like in the case of the Peruvian Hairless, they maintain a lupoid shaped head, an incomplete denture related to their genetic alopecia, and their typical facial wrinkles exactly like you can observe in Peruvian Pre-Inca ceramics of Chimu, Vicus, Sican, Wari, Chancay and others that go as far back as more than 1,500 years BC. They were always greatly appreciated by their owners, and are often found in important tombs, buried close to them or at their feet. The Peruvian Hairless Dog is a strong animal with an admirable structure that expresses harmony and speed; his body is flexible and walks with a typical gait called a ‘cushioned step’: attractive and elegant heritage of his long runs in the hot sand of northern Perù where he developed. His loyalty, alert attitude and acute ear, made him survive the innumerable pains and dangers he lived through before and after the arrival of the Spaniards who conquered these lands; but the adverse circumstances helped him develop an amazing intelligence, quality that today, makes this dog an invaluable friend and faithful guardian. Their loyalty and passion for being beside their owners is with them, a genetic quality developed in the hundreds of years they have served as ‘curing dogs’ and been used for such purposes; this made them be constantly in contact with the human body. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Their temperature is 40ºC, three more than a human being and the same as any other dog; the difference is that being hairless permits the immediate transmission of their thermic high temperature directly over the desired area and with no temperature changes. This advantage is what humans can profit to mitigate muscular or joint pains caused by arthritis or rheumatism, or bronchial and asthmatic problems, or simply by keeping them near you, in cold weather. In modern times where allergies are so popular, especially in children, Peruvian Hairless Dogs would be their perfect pet to have, love and enjoy. The difference with taming is that the beneficial changes only occur in a specific animal and is not transmitted to future generations. In September 2008 in a study investigating naked dogs, the Berna University in Switzerland, succeeded in the scientific discovery of a mutated gene, called FOXI3, the origin and cause of the nudeness and the absence of dental pieces in naked breeds. Breeders of Peruvian Naked Dogs (PSPP) must have this discovery very much in mind, especially now that the variety with hair, Peruvian Naked Dog Variety With Hair (PCPP) has been internationally approved by the FCI. But… what was the real origin of this animal we justly call man`s best friend?... The theory now accepted is that the only ancestor of this dog was the Asian Wolf. It is necessary to be rigorously attentive to the fact that just as not all naked dogs are PSPP, in the same way, not all dogs with hair are really PCPP, since during hundreds of years and up to the present time, there has been a constant matting of these dogs with hairy common street dogs. What every serious breeder must do is a rigorous selection, to preserve the characteristics that are typical of our standard and be sure that the PCPP has the same structure and traits as the naked, because these will be the ones to reinforce health, vigor, strength, teeth, among other things, without causing any changes in the naked ones. PCPP usually have a complete denture, yet in their standard the missing of one PM1 is a fault but not disqualifies; more than one is not accepted. The calculated moment of their appearance in our American Continent was about ten to fifteen thousand years ago, when the first human migration arrived from Asia displacing themselves in search of new and more fertile lands. Walking though the frozen Behring Strait during the last Great Glaciation, they continued their south journey and these canines who followed them in populating new spaces, began to develop their own characteristics in accordance to their different settlements and new requirements and services that humans required of them. After crossing the inhospitable equatorial jungle, their settlement in Peru was almost exclusively along the northern coast, reaching Piura. Here they found a sandy coastline with a prodigious sea and valleys that extended almost to the beach, where they could satiate all their needs. With the Andes Mountain Chain on one side, the equatorial jungle left behind and the sea on the opposite side, they found themselves practically surrounded by these natural barriers that induced them to stay in this abundant region. The geographic isolation, impelling force in the genetic diversity of species, in the case of Peruvian dogs, gave them certain original features and characteristics that differentiated them from other precedent populations in their evolution process. Protect and value this unique breed. It is a privilege to have in your hands, with all his emotional history and millenarian past, a living relic that has had the genetic force to survive thousands of years and now comes to you intact, exactly like he was then, with his distinguished beauty, his amazing intelligence, his admirable plasticity, his elegant cushioned walk, his expressive eyes, and his immense love. Breeders of this beautiful and noble animal have in their hands the responsibility of reproducing this exotic and ancient jewel whose design we have had the good luck to inherit gratuitously. Now, in thanks for this privilege, it is our obligation to reproduce him and continue his species with all his extraordinary original beauty and virtues. During this millenary and hazardous displacement of humans occupying the same habitat with the wolf, man obtains the first prodigious achievement, through patience and selection: tame the ferocious blood-thirsty wolf, so much as to change him into his companion, helper, guardian, body-guard and faithful dog. All this process is called Domestication. To distinguish between Domestication and Taming is of vital importance to understand how the wolf turned into a dog and how a serious and compromised breeder should plan his selective reproduction to be able to accentuate the desired characteristics and maintain the morphological, physiological and behavior type he wishes to transmit to his successive breed generations. www.dogsqueensland.org.au June 2015 - 19 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Perro Sin Pelo Del Peru The Peruvian Hairless Dog Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Sally Johnson There are many articles and Standards describing the Peruvian Hairless and its general features, I would like to diverge from this and discuss the lesser known but just as important areas of the dogs and why they are so important in the breed. Firstly the breed is ancient, not just a hundred years old, but three thousand years old. This reflects in its mental attitude, the dog is wary and alert for sudden movements, it does not like to be restrained or restricted and it takes time and patience to teach the dog to accept human contact. Judges or any stranger approaching it and wanting to touch the skin should be made aware of this. Do not expect this dog to think you are its best friend. They have been bred to hunt small game and to be an alert and loud watchdog for the native villages and sacred places, so, watch and loud is what they do best. This breed has two distinct gaits, a long reach and drive and a short circular step, both of which can be misunderstood. I have highlighted this part of the Standard as this is where many Judges are confused by the different movements. The movements (pictured to the right) are designed for two different terrains, the reach, of course, to cover flat ground efficiently and the shorter step to move through sand dunes and up steep mountains. It is not hard to imagine why these dogs have this when you consider where they originate, from the sandy coasts of Peru to Machu Pichu in the Andes. 20 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World The arch over the loin can make some people consider that the dog has a bad topline; however, this arch is required to some degree. Some dogs have a more pronounced arch and a deeper tuck up than others, but this arch should be visible or at least felt on examination. Lastly, but no less important is the head and especially the jaw. This is a Sighthound with a Lupoid head shape. Lean with no dewlap and lacking underjaw. A Peruvian with a heavy underjaw is not correct. Check the lips are quite ‘over’ the lower jaw as seen in the dogs below. The Peruvian is a unique and amazing dog with features that are as varied as they are interesting. The sacred position this breed held in the past to the people of Peru demands that we keep the breed healthy and accurate to his original form. The breed can be quite a handful because they love playing, their idea of play might not be yours and they can come out of nowhere and hit hard. They love to dig and to play tug o’war with anything available. Toys need to be tiger tough to last longer than a few minutes. However they can be gentle and sweet and are especially devoted to children. Nineteen years in fact since the first time I saw them over the Internet and fell hopelessly, irrevocably in love. Of course there were no Xoloitzcuintle in Australia then, and in fact wouldn’t be for many years, but whenever I had some spare time, I would trawl through articles, pictures, in fact anything about them over the Internet. My heart was set but also heavy because I knew (or believed then) that I would never be the one to own them or import them as the financial burden would be just too much. Over the years I had seen so many Xolo shapes, types, and colours, but I had very definite ideas as to what I liked. When it came time to put my idea of a Xoloitzcuintle (phenotype) in conjunction with the standard I then realised I had my work cut out for me to find breeders who conformed as closely as possible to the written word. I wanted Mexican bloodlines, but in Australia we cannot import directly from Mexico. I had to find a person to trust and build a relationship with in America who would be willing to take on the task of caring for any dog I bought. Hard, frightening and a lot riding on faith… from both sides. Initially, I bought two lovely miniatures that would complement each other in bloodlines and started to watch them grow. Then the dog grew past the maximum allowed height! Back to square one with the male. He was neutered and sold and we recouped what we could and started looking for another male. Hard task when no one knows you and you don’t speak the language! But I still wanted Mexican bloodlines and from particular kennels so waiting was very hard indeed! But wait we did, and in the meantime offers started coming in for the Intermediates and eventually for offers for the Standards. 22 - June 2015 Would I consider this bloodline or that bloodline? it would be nice to have this kennel or that kennel represented in Australia! Initially I was to only bring two dogs into Australia. Just one pair of Miniatures. As it stands now and in the near future I will have brought three Miniatures, two Intermediates and three Standards, into the country! I was and still am thrilled! My husband? Not so much! Amoroso’s Alita was the first to arrive in May 2014 and her spirit blew me away. Gentle, quiet and easy going she fitted into our family like an old soul reunited. Still now we seem to be attached at the hip. The two boys (Balamcito, a Miniature, and Basilio, an Intermediate) arrived in September of the same year to add to the joys of owning this most unusual breed. An oddity wherever we go, it gives me immense pleasure to educate the public and we find that everyone we meet is quite happy to learn something about them. They have been likened to an Egyptian dog, a Pharaoh, or people are just plain bamboozled by their looks! The Xolos are different in personality to any other breed but all have one thing in common. They are wary and standoffish in public and prefer to be looked at but not touched. They trust their family completely and enjoy the company of children that are well mannered, simply walking away and putting distance on the smaller more boisterous ones. In these ways, they are most similar to a sighthound in nature, and this is how we hope that judges approach them in the ring. They are as anyone would imagine a hairless breed to be: easy care. A quick bath once a week with a good quality bath oil and a quick exfoliating sponge. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Their nails do grow quick though, and need clipping every week or two at most. Xolos have no smell, no body odour at all and are fastidious cleaners… like cats! Their skin does scratch easily though, and I have been told by several overseas breeders and show people that they tend not to let their Xolos play with others in the household when in show mode. Having read the ins and outs of the breed standard, it allows for these scratches and scars and I’d rather my dogs have a social life than look pristine in the ring! My Xolo team is family and like family, we play together, walk together and live together: no one is separated for the sake of the ring. Chinese Crested Album They are also very primitive when it comes to drive- thinking any small animal like birds are game and for them to chase down, hunt and kill. This drive makes them a great candidate for sports such as lure coursing, and agility as long as they have a very good relationship with their handler. In fact Xolos have excelled at all of these sports overseas. They are powerful and compact and enjoy the challenges. I hope our Australian bred babies will also enter in agility or lure coursing and provide the chance to show the public just how versatile this breed can be. On the 23rd February 2015, it was a delight to welcome four beautiful Miniature puppies born here in Australia by Alita and Balamcito, and from a natural mating. We were happy to see these puppies born with the ease that Xolos are known for! Healthy and robust with such even weights and barely losing a total of 5 grams between them in the first few days. Among them, we also have the first coated Xolo in Australia, and he will be able to teach, show and educate not only the public but also judges in the conformation ring, that this breed does have a coated variety, something that has often confused many, owing to the fact that they could not be bred from or shown before last year! I’m looking forward to showing the babies this year and hope that people will come around to our gazebo in Group 7 for a look and even a cuddle. Residing in regional areas can sometimes present some barriers to member participation in events and seminars delivered by Dogs Queensland. It is an exciting time in the Zone with members across the state enjoying some new initiatives delivered by Dogs Queensland, so there are lots of opportunities for members to get involved, participate and learn. The Board has responded to feedback and follow up about flexible delivery options to expand educational and participation opportunities to the wider membership and flexible delivery is starting to become more widely available. Bundaberg Easter Eggstraveganza Dogs Queensland will continue to trial and refine various options for flexible delivery, so I’d really encourage regional members to become involved in these opportunities and provide honest and constructive feedback to ensure these continue to be delivered and improved over time. The Bundaberg Canine Club ran a very successful show weekend over the Easter weekend which was enjoyed by many exhibitors. Check out the feature story and photos from this event in this month’s Dog World, kindly supplied by Marg and Tony Norton, and photographer Patrik Berger. Some of the initiatives that have been undertaken for flexible delivery include: Well done Bundaberg Canine Club! • What’s On in Zone 2 in June? • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Emerald Ag Show – 3rd June Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club Tracking – 6th and 7th June Gympie Dog Obedience Club Double Tracking – 6th, 7th and 8th June Wide Bay Working Gundog Club Retrieving - 6th, 7th and 8th June Rockhampton Ag Show – 11th June Isis and District Canine Club Shows (Bundaberg) – 13th and 14th June Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club Obedience, Agility, Jumpers, Games, Rally-O – 13th and 14th June Mackay Kennel Club Show (Mackay) – 13th June Pioneer Valley Kennel Club (Finch Hatton Ag) – 14th June Mt Larcom Ag Show – 20th June Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club Double Rally-O – 20th June Mackay Ag Show – 25th June Magpies Mackay and Dist Obedience Club Double Obedience, Agility, Jumpers, One Game – 27th June Gympie District Kennel Club (Maryborough) – 27th and 28th June • Regional trainers established for the delivery of show workers training; Recording of breeders seminars held at Durack; Recording of handling seminar run by the Basenji Club of Qld; and Flexible delivery option for the Members Education Scheme As I mentioned the transition to full and effective flexible delivery of education to members is a process that will take time, but the important thing is that this transition has commenced. Members participation and feedback will be vital to continually improve the product. Keep an eye out for the above and other offers from Dogs Queensland. Rules In Action With the introduction of online entries, entries for shows stay open later and later now, but it is important to remember that there are rules in relation to the preparation for the shows after the closing date for entries, so there does need to be an absolute cut-off. Under Rule 130, Judges need to receive a list of breeds they are judging and the numbers for each breed at least seven (7) working days prior to the exhibition. Many of our Zone 2 members will travel to Brisbane in June to attend breed specialty shows. Rule 131 states that Show Managers are to be provided with a catalogue at least five (5) working days prior to the exhibition to enable for planning. We wish all of our members safe travels and best of luck at these events. Most clearly, Rule 141 states that entries must close at least twelve (12) days prior to the date of the exhibition (unless approval has 24 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World been provided by Dogs Queensland for an alternate – this is for special circumstances). of places, we do need to make sure we are very vigilant and in good physical condition to drive. There is a lot of work that needs to be done between entries closing and the exhibition, and this is why some boundaries need to be set. As a group we are very lucky that the rate of accidents within our community is not higher, but at the same time this can also be put down to the fact that most of our members are very careful when they are travelling. There are always circumstances where members situations change and they would like to submit extra entries – this is great support for the Club too and while they may like to take the additional entries, we need to be mindful that we are not putting them under pressure to do things that are not allowed under the rules. The Dogs Queensland rules and amendments are available on the Dogs Queensland website if you want to check out some more of the rules under which we operate. Travelling members Many of the members from Zone 2 undertook long journeys to attend shows such as the Sydney Royal, and Nationals for Breed Clubs (a massive Whippet National was one of these) recently. Several members tasted success on the big stage and they should be congratulated for their dedication and participation in these events. With it being no mean or inexpensive feat for them to actually get to the location of these events in the first place, it was so much more that they were then able to present and show dogs and pick up some good results. Please be very aware of the signs of fatigue when driving or conditions that are going to create a greater risk of an incident. There is no trip so important that it makes it necessary to put ourselves into an unsafe situation. Please make sure you don’t drive tired. It is better to pull over and have a rest than to keep going. Some studies have revealed that driving tired can affect a driver just as much, if not more than driving after drinking. Submissions Submissions are always welcome for the column. If you have a news item, an idea for a story, photos, or want to report a special or significant achievement, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Any information can be emailed to me at craig.pettett1@bigpond.com. Until next time. We have some very diligent, dedicated breeders and exhibitors in this region and some stunning dogs, so it is no surprise that we can compete with the best. Working Together In recent times throughout the Zone, myself and many others have witnessed the very successful running of shows and events by what is primarily a very small and dedicated workforce or volunteers. It is so pleasing to see that we have volunteer workers pitching in at shows and in general, so many members just offering to help and do whatever is required to assist. This kind of generosity, no matter how small the member thinks their contribution is, does not go unnoticed and our clubs, Dogs Queensland and exhibitors in general are very grateful for the support that our member family provides. Safety on the Road We have so many members who travel long distances by road to attend shows and events, and given that the road isn’t the safest www.dogsqueensland.org.au June 2015 - 25 Club Interest The Queensland Dog World Bundaberg Easter Eggstravaganza Easter saw the Bundaberg Canine Club host its Easter Eggstravaganza, four Championship Shows with an International Judging panel and two Open Shows with ten judges across the two Open shows. A fantastic time was had by all who attended this huge event. The shows were held for the first time in the Undercover Arena at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct and with all the rain this Easter I’m sure this was really appreciated. The Championship show judges were Mrs E. Kuleshova (Russia), Mrs N. Sedylch (Russia), Mr D. Kwee (Indonesia), Mrs J. Gagne (Canada), Ms N. Vzhyshnevska (China), Mr C. Rogers (NZ). 26 - June 2015 Unfortunately one of the judges contracted, Mr Andrew Brace (UK) was unable to attend, being stranded in Austria with flights cancelled. As this only happened two days before the shows, the club decided to have two groups judged by one judge each day, something that could not be avoided at such short notice. The two panels for the Open Shows were made up of Miss A. Dunne, Mr C. Reid, Mrs L. Neilson, Mrs M. Broughton, Ms S. Guilfoyle, Mr J. Whitehead, Mrs P. Brown, Ms J. Baker, Mr D. Kill, Mrs G. McNeill, it was great to have two-hundred and fifty entries for these Open Shows. Numbers were great for all shows and our Show Manager Valley Horne, Stewards and Writers did fantastic jobs keeping everything running to schedule, thank you to you all. Saturday saw the Mayor of Bundaberg and Patron of the Bundaberg Canine Club Mr Mal Forman enjoy watching the show before presenting the Best in Show Trophy and Rosette to the winner. Mal and his wife Joy also enjoyed lunch with the judges, stewards and writers on that day. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Club Interest The Queensland Dog World Sunday was the Alan Balaam Memorial Show. Alan was a long standing Club member and his wife Barbara still is. Each year in memory of Alan, Barbara presents $100 to the Best in Show winner to go with the Club’s Trophy. Thank you Barb. Tiny Tots was held for the first time at a Bundaberg Canine Club show also, with the little ones all receiving a toy pull-along-puppy, sashes and goodies from the Club. They all had a great time including the judge Norma Zimmerle and all spectators. Plans and changes are in motion for next year to make an even bigger and better Easter Eggstravaganza 2016 in Bundaberg, with six Championship Shows! No Open Shows at Easter 2016, hopefully moving them somewhere else. Handlers was held as usual with Amanda Dunne judging the three age groups. These young handlers certainly know how to strut their stuff in the ring. Also this Easter, the club held two Lady and Gents Handlers competitions with Andrew Ness judging one and Wayne Carter the other. Hilarious is all that can be said and if you missed them you missed something just so funny, well done to all who competed and to both judges. The Fancy Dress was another fun filled time, well done to all who competed and to Pamela Brown the judge. The canteen was again a big success, getting off to a slow start due to weather and this time being a little further from the rings than usual but just great as always. Thank you to Nev and his band of workers Darren, Sue and Chris, Suzi and Julie. A big thank you must go to the Sponsors of these shows Black Hawk and Dog News Australia along with Easy Dog Entries, Orivet Genetic Pet care, Bundy Homes, Total Pet Care, Bundaberg McDonalds, Bundaberg Red Rooster, Bundaberg Regional Council and Bundaberg Eagle Boys. www.dogsqueensland.org.au June 2015 - 27 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World The Chinese Crested A definitve look inside the breed Written by Amy Fernandez ack a room full of Chinese Crested and you can expect a giant heap of sleeping dogs. Pack a room full of Crested fanciers and wait for the fireworks. It’s ironic that a breed famed for its sociable, placid nature inevitably sparks such contentious battles. Quite possibly, their single point of agreement is the fact that Crested type is all over the map. Of course, this situation is not unique to the Crested world. But the drastic nature of this case provides a sterling example of the extreme polarities that evolve under the heading of purebred continuity. “Mrs. Ida Garrett of New York City has been hard at work on her volume on the Chihuahua which will contain much new and interesting material on the breed. Intensive study and research have disclosed proof, she says, there never was a Chinese Crested … it was never a true native of China.” Popular Dogs, October 17th, 1931. I have a couple of theories about this; starting with how and why Crested type unraveled into the big, snarly mess we have today. AKC judge, author, and Popular Dogs editor Will Judy stated his views on the Crested for his Dog Encyclopedia a year later. “Hairless dogs may be entirely hairless or crested mostly on the top of the skull and at the end of the tail. The Mexican hairless may or may not have a crest….The short haired variety is the only true Chihuahua…the Mexican Hairless, the Papillon, and the Chinese Crested all belong to the same general family of Mexican hairless.” Even though dogs designated as Chinese Crested floated around shows in England and America since the 1870s records reveal quite an eclectic crowd parading around under that banner. Registry protocols were a bit looser back then. Hairless dogs of every size, shape, and ancestry were labelled as Chinese Cresteds. In large part, this creative branding was intended to create an appealing mystique and thereby enhance the public appeal. That sort of thing was standard practice during that frenzied era of breed creation in the late nineteenth century. The mundane facts of many breed histories were embellished with tales of ancient exotic and largely unverifiable heritage. But in this case, it happened about 50 years later and qualifies as pure fiction. Until quite recently, the Chinese Crested was a breed in name only- which explains the paucity of factual details regarding any aspect of its evolution. Documented references are sparse. But these snippets provide a glimpse of the truth. 28 - June 2015 Cresteds were also mentioned rather questionably in Garrett’s feature for the April 1935 AKC Gazette “Another hairless dog whose origin is nebulous is the so-called Chinese Crested dog.” Numerous sources linked the Crested to crossbreeding, especially to Chihuahua development. This remark comes from Mona Huxham’s 1976 book All about the Chihuahua. “There is some suggestion that the mating of the Chihuahua with the Mexican Hairless might have produced the Chinese Crested.” In reality, the Crested’s foundation bloodlines were fashioned from a hodgepodge of hairless dogs. During the 1950s and 60s Lee, Mordor, Crest Haven, and seven other less substantial breeding programs forged the working concept of the modern Chinese Crested. www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World Their work also became the first officially documented breed records. The American Hairless Dog Club, a private studbook established from the late 1950s, operated until its founder’s death in 1969. During this era the Chinese Crested was ejected from Miscellaneous in 1965. In 1979, a new club began petitioning AKC for readmission based on partially reconstructed records gleaned from the defunct AHDC registry. AKC readmitted the Crested to Miscellaneous in January, 1986 after the club agreed to turn over its studbook. Instead, that led to a protracted, unsuccessful court battle between warring factions in the club during which that studbook disappeared. Lineage records eventually submitted to AKC were reconstructed piecemeal during its tenure in Miscellaneous. Years later the studbook was reopened to correct undisclosed errors in those records. Admittedly, the saga of Crested recognition presents a rather drastic example of “whatever can go wrong will go wrong”. But every breed’s trek to purebred status includes a share of dramas and detours. Most occur off the record, but those skeletons in the closet explain many baffling surprises that appear in the whelping box. More importantly, they provide an ongoing reminder that the purebred label is a relative term- not a guarantee of consistency. No breed evolves on autopilot. Its direction depends on who is in the driver’s seat. From a practical standpoint, the Chinese Crested was developed in England during the 1970s and 80s. A tiny population of American imports from those founding kennels became the basis of those legendary, instantly identifiable bloodlines like Staround, Moonswift, and Kojak. More than half a century later, dogs like Staround Quanto are still considered definitive examples of correct type. Unfortunately, the reasons for their iconic status seem to be fading off the grid. So here’s a refresher. They exemplified those unmistakable features responsible for the Crested’s gestalt. Every breed’s unique type is built on the bedrock of a few hallmark traits. Invariably, they result from very tricky, almost impossible genetic combinations. In this case, dogs like Quanto would not have achieved superstar status without their lush crests, plumes and socks. That length and density was all natural- nothing more or less than correct texture. Nor would they have been held in such regard if they were not truly hairless. Back in the day, artificial hair removal was tantamount to sacrilege. Cheating wasn’t worth it because those breeder/judges could spot it a mile away. Quanto and his fellow icons possessed perfect patterning –a trait now regarded as a myth in this breed. www.dogsqueensland.org.au This topic deserves a book, but I will confine my observations to one more crucial aspect of Crested type. They could move. That alone made them exceptional among Toys–regrettably. However, from the perspective of true type, sound structure isn’t in itself a mark of distinction, nor is it generic. These dogs were built according to the Crested blueprint, in other words they combined those ostensibly incompatible traits responsible for its unmistakable silhouette. They were well up on leg thanks to long oval bone that imparted the Crested’s singular combination of elegance and athleticism. Refinement did NOT come at the expense of sturdiness. The ribcage was long, deep and very narrow- a difficult package to achieve. Even so, it is the key to those long, beautiful sloping shoulders that come part and parcel with that breathtaking neckline and return of forearm. That combination centres the forelegs perfectly under the body mass to produce that easy grace that cannot be mistaken for any other breed. It does not move like an Afghan, Poodle, hackney pony, or any of the other frequently cited comparisons. A great Crested doesn’t stir up the dust. It moves with the beautiful effortless confidence of a beauty queen striding onstage. Once you see it you never forget. Within two decades those English breeders successfully forged a stable, definitive type largely because they were forced to breed very, very close. Tight linebreeding yielded amazing consistency and magnificent type, which belied the genetic chaos lurking 3-5 gens in the background. During the 80s those classic British bloodlines were exported to establish the breed globally. And that’s when things got complicated. Some breeds are rather self correcting. Countless generations of purposeful breeding instill them with a degree of genetic resilience. They are not impervious to inept breeding, but it requires some determined ongoing effort to produce truly offbeat tangential strains. Chinese Cresteds aren’t equipped with this built in GPS for the reasons I’ve explained. Those beautiful bloodlines were fragile and easily destabilised. In other words, top quality breeding stock wouldn’t go far without the guidance of a clear, unwavering concept of correct type. That can mean a lot of things- thanks to the mysterious machinations of the human brain. The objective parameters outlined in every breed standard are always filtered through the lens of personal perception. It’s unavoidable, but mostly a good thing. It adds those savory nuances of type that become the signature of a breeder’s artistry. June 2015 - 29 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World Continued from page 29 Of course, it’s essential to know the rules in order to successfully bend them. Every dedicated fancier strives to cultivate an unerring eye for type. The holy grail of this sport, that ability is revered, coveted, and very poorly understood. Science is providing a few insights into the mechanics of this elusive talent. Like brain surgery, rocket science, and every other daunting skill, accurately assessing a dog requires some impressive mental acrobatics. Technically known as perceptual learning, in this case it involves accurately appraising those subtle details that are overlooked by the untrained eye, calculating their relative significance, and melding that information into an insightful opinion. These spot on judgement calls are distilled from a mountain of practical experience, personal observations, and hard facts. Over time, this massive collection of pertinent data is assimilated and refined into a confident grasp of the subject. But here’s the thing, at that point perceptual learning operates as an internal self regulated process. It morphs from thoughtful deliberation into a spontaneous, intuitive reaction often described as a sixth sense. The nature of that crucial, intensely personal concept of type really depends on where a fancier happened to jump onboard this crazy train of Crested evolution. That explains the epidemic of wildly erratic judging, extreme trends, and disjointed, adamantly defended viewpoints that perpetually overtake this breed. Yes, formal educational resources have become widely available to fill in the gaps. But those influences generally supplement rather than supplant our original perceptions, regardless of their validity. Of course, no one sets out to get it wrong. But let’s face it, the internet is not the place to cultivate focused attention or open minded views. It’s more akin to being pushed into a perceptual comfort zone- an unconscious resistance to ideas that challenge entrenched concepts. In the old days, we called that kennel blindness. The good news is that perceptual learning is NOT written in stone. There’s always plenty to learn in this game, it’s just a matter of paying attention. Source credits: Amy Fernandez is considered a world expert on hairless dogs, has written many books and is an accredited member of the media at Crufts. Amy is also a beautiful artist and lives in the USA. If it was easy to master this coveted skill we would all be experts. It usually begins with basic research. For most of this breed’s history, information was a scarce commodity. Unearthing those priceless gems and resources required some determined effort. Frequently the entire learning experience was based on a single source, obviously not an ideal educational situation. The internet completely revised this challenge. Casual curiosity seekers are inundated with an information overload. Every question is answered, refuted, rehashed, and revised to the point of total confusion. The new challenge has become sifting useful wheat from this mountain of chaff. It requires patience but it’s possible to pinpoint credible sources and follow a genuine information trail… if you come to the table with a few decades of experience in this game. That’s the exception these days. Most Crested fanciers enter the breed with enthusiasm and energy but scant background in dogs, a phenomenon that has become typical in most breeds. Most opinions about breed type are primarily derived from internet sources. In reality, they are more akin to reflexive reactions founded on external reinforcementthose loud, persuasive personalities that dominate chat lists and forums. 30 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World www.dogsqueensland.org.au June 2015 - 31 Member Insight The Queensland Dog World CHINESE CRESTED GALLERY INSIGHT HairlessSlate Mahogany 32 - June 2015 Red Chocolate BlackandCream Grey www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World BlackonBlack Black SilverPuff www.dogsqueensland.org.au HairlessbabywithcreamPuff Puff HairlessSpotty BlackPuff Babies Puppy June 2015 - 33 Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World 34 - June 2015 www.dogsqueensland.org.au Member Insight The Queensland Dog World The Coated Xoloitzcuintle Dogs Queensland Exclusive Supplied by Toula Cameron The coated variety has had a very hard won comeback in recent years. Although there have been many advocates for this variety, the country of origin have not permitted the mating or showing for well over seventy years. The coated variety doesn’t have the dominant hairless gene nor does it have the dentition problems that plague the hairless variety. Until recently, most coated puppies were culled from the litter at birth. Until fairly recently as a result, we have not seen many good specimens at all due to this secret and dark aspect of this breed. To the right is one of the few, whose coat is the favoured length and richness. Novia is an intermediate young bitch who shows off the classically beautiful head all xolos should have, with well proportioned, expressive ears set at the correct angle. Coated xolos do come in a variety of colours, lengths and even textures. They have now been accepted into the breeding programs to correct dentition problems in the hairless, and have also found a place in the show ring. In the past, the ones who were lucky enough to be born into the hands of an understanding breeder have excelled in other sports such as agility. They do not differ at all in any way to their hairless counterparts in personality. We will be seeing some exciting times ahead for this breed as they are very carefully and judiciously added into the breeding programs of the future.
