Mariana Posthwaite is an interior design guru. The culmination of her life work
and experience has brought her here to San Diego, where she owns and operates
Casa Duhagon; an interior design house that specializes in interior design, furniture,
interior decor, lighting design and accessorizing. To appreciate Mariana’s expertise,
it’s best to look at her background and the road that led her to the world of design.
Growing up, Mariana was inspired by art, painting, drawing and sculpture always leaning toward all that is three dimensional. She comes from a diverse artistic
background; her father was in construction, her mother’s family was in fine art, her
aunt was a photographer and her grandfather was the President of the Mexicali BC
House of Culture.
With these influences, she chose to study architecture in college. To her, the
decision was plain and simple. She studied at ITESO (Ibero), a school founded by
Jesuits in Guadalajara, Jalisco. There, the faculty of Architecture had the academic
examples of the great creative masters of Jalisco; Luis Baarragan, Ignacio Diaz Morales and Juan Palomar, to name a few. This movement of theory and contemporary
Mexican architecture changed her life. She started to form in-existent spaces and
imagine how they looked completed with a single line and drawing paper.
After earning her degree in architecture, she started a new path towards
interior design. This journey took her to Boston, where she earned her master’s in interior design. At her new University (BAC), she fell in love with the school and learned
that interior design is different than what is called “decoration.” Immersed in this new
environment and style of Victorian Boston, Mariana was awe struck by the intimate
European and American design which was so different from the brutalist design that
she had seen in her days in Guadalajara.
She took on her first job in San Diego under the leadership of Amy Noel Finley. Amy introduced her to the world of interior design aesthetic by taking her to the
furniture fairs in Milan, New York and Paris. Mariana quickly realized that anything is
possible. In 2008, she formed Casa Duhagon where she has combined her work experience and aesthetic design skills into a successful career. Today, Casa Duhagon caters
to clients throughout San Diego county and beyond. Mariana strives to bring her life
philosophy into each design project, specializing in bringing a new, creative soul to
each home that is truly reflective of the owner’s essence. Each project is different,
having its own fresh style and is 100% livable and turnkey.
