Youth Trip to the London Temple November — December 2012 At the start of November a party of young men, young women and their leaders of Leeds 3rd Ward (from the Farsley branch of the Church in Leeds) together with three non-member guests, took a two day trip which culminated in a visit to the London Temple, where they performed baptisms and confirmations for their deceased ancestors. Family History Newsletter... LEEDS STAKE Youth trips are normally to the Preston Temple, but this one was an opportunity to also visit the Hyde Park Chapel of the Church and take in some London landmarks on the way down. Following the collection of two minibuses from a local hire company, the group of 23 set off and drove to the Hyde Park Chapel on Exhibition Road in London. After spending some time in the newly-refurbished Visitor Centre there, the youth were encouraged to visit the national museums and explore. A few of the young men set a goal to walk to the Thames from Hyde Park. Part way through their journey, one member of the group became incredibly tired and they had to turn back. At a Church meeting on the Sunday after the trip, a young man related this experience. He said they had wanted to walk the entire way, but could not. He then likened that experience to the approximately 100 names they had been proxies for. Those individuals had wanted to make it all the way to baptism, but could not. For whatever reason, they were called back before they got there. He said, “We did for them what they couldn’t do for themselves. We helped them go the rest of the way.” When all the youth were safely counted in after their adventures in London, the group travelled to the home of Area Authority, Elder Clifford Herbertson in Essex, where they got to know him and his family. Fun was had, playing games and eating food together. The group took their leave the following morning and headed for the London Temple. In the weeks leading up to the trip, the young people had prepared for their Temple experience by searching for family names that needed to have work completed on their behalf. One young woman had found six names in her family line. With help from her advisor and other members of the Ward she had the names prepared for the Temple and completed the baptisms and confirmations for each one. She mentioned how it made a difference to her to know that those names were from her own family. In total, there were 41 family names prepared from the Ward and the remainder were supplied from the Temple File. London Temple Visitors Centre Upon arriving inside the Temple and before getting to work, the Temple President took time to meet with the group. He shook each member’s hand and welcomed them to the House of the Lord. Among other things, he invited them to be at the temple. He mentioned that they had made the long journey to be there physically and asked that they be there mentally as well. He invited them to keep their thoughts on the work they would be doing. Temple itself, but spent their time in the Temple Visitors Centre and on the grounds. One mentioned how much he had enjoyed his time there and how much he had learned and how kind the missionaries had been. He thought the grounds were beautiful and was very happy that he had come on the trip. Spending time in the Temple, the Visitor’s Centre and on the Temple grounds changed the dynamics of the group. There was a notable difference between the journey down and the ride back. After the experience at the Temple, there seemed to be fewer barriers between the young people. The group was more open with everyone making an effort to be more inclusive. Greater unity was achieved. Being at the Temple and serving there provided everyone with an increase of mutual love, understanding, good fellowship and a much greater closeness. After relating his own conversion story he emphasized how much baptism meant to him and how much it could mean to those the youth would be proxies for. His short devotional really brought in the Spirit and seemed to help the young men and women to focus appropriately. The young women reiterated how grateful they were for this trip and without prompting, also discussed how they wanted to be better because of it. One young woman said the experience made her want to be kinder. She said, “It’s perfect. I get to be in my favourite place in the whole world with my favourite people. It’s so beautiful.” The three guests from other faiths who came on the trip were not allowed inside the Family History Workshop General Church Websites This is to be held at Leeds 3 (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Priesthorpe Road, Farsley, Leeds, LS28 5JR) at 10am on 17th November 2012.
