It depends on the amount you can afford. I took the metro. The operating hours are only between 6 am and midnight. Other options to get from Ataturk Airport to the center: • Taxi: about 40- 48TL to Taksim and Sultanahmet. There is no night fare in Istanbul anymore - the price would be the same at midnight or midday. • Havatas: the express bus service that departs half-hourly between 4AM-midnight and costs 10 TL to Taksim and Aksaray. • The public bus (line #96T) that costs 5 TL (3.5 with İstanbulKart). It has fewer departure times now, due to Havatas, which is also a municipality engaged bus service. Note: Turkish Liras (notes of TL5 and TL10 and coins) are necessary to buy fare card or tokens, in order to pay your fare on Metro and trams. Where can I find Currency Exchanges and Cash Machines (ATMs)? In the Arrivals hall outside the secure Customs area, in the baggage claim area. You can also find ATMs at the entrance to the Metro station. How you can reach the metro: After you have exited the secure Customs area, turn right and walk to the end of the terminal watching for the Metro signs. Follow the Metro signs along the broad underground concourse to the Havalimanı Airport Metro station on the left at the end. It is 10minutes walk from the airport to the Metro Line. You will take the Red Line M1 at the Metro Map towards Aksaray. You can obtain the metro paper map from the kiosk from the place you buy the tokens. Before entering the metro station, it is necessary to buy a jeton (token) for 3TL per person. You can buy this either from the cashier- just hand 3TL and he will give you a token -, or from the Jetonmatik- automatic dispenser that vends tokens (jeton) This machine accepts banknotes as well as coins. Press ‘select’ button to choose the number of tokens you want to buy and then push ‘ok’. You have to buy 2 Metro tokens per person from Atatürk Airport to Sultanahmet, Eminönü or Kabataş and 3 to reach Taksim Square. The price for each jeton is 1, 5 TL. Note: They don't accept credit card or foreign currency here. ZoomTip 1.2: How to Get to the Hotel from the Airport At start you take the metro from the Terminus Metro Station, Havalimani, and get off at Zeytinburnu, the 6th Metro stop. There, you have to buy another jeton (3TL), which is different from the first one. From Zeytinburnu, take the T1 blue tram line Bağcılar-Kabataş towards Kabataş. The tram passes by Sultanahmet (Sultanahmet stop), where you have to get off. The huge Blue Mosque will be clearly in view about 300 meters to the south. The trip from the airport to Sultanahmet takes about 45 min. If the tram is already crowded and your luggage is bulky, you may want to wait for the next tram so that you have a better chance of getting a seat. Beware of pickpockets. Take any valuables out of your pockets and put them under your clothes (a neck pouch is best). Having a seat is also a good way to reduce the danger from pickpockets who are most active on the crowded trams Please find street-by-street guidance in Sultanahmet: Click Here ZoomTip 1.3: Info on the Monuments Hagia Sophia: Summer Schedule: 15 APRİL -1 OCTOBER Visiting Hours: 09.00 - 19.00 Hours of Ticket Sale: 18:00 Winter Schedule: 1 OCTOBER- 15 APRİL Visiting Hours: 09:00- 17:00 Hours of Ticket Sale: 16:00. Ticket Price: 25 TL. Blue Mosque: Entrance Fee: Gratis Remember: The mosque closes for 90 minutes at each pray time, so avoid visiting a mosque at pray time (Especially Midday praying on Friday) or within a half hour after the ezan is chanted from the Mosque minarets. Pray happens five times a day with the first call to prayer at sunrise and the last one at nightfall, so you would better arrive mid-morning. Before step in to Mosque, take off your shoes and put in plastic bags provided at the entrance. If you are women wear a head covering when entering to Blue Mosque. Head coverings are available at the Blue Mosque entrance for free. When you are inside the mosque, remain quiet and don't use flash photography. Topkapi Palace: Hours: 09:00-17:00pm. Tickets are purchased in the gateway to the Second Court. Ticket Price: 20 TL The Harem Section can be visited with a separate ticket in the ticket office near the Harem entrance with Ticket Price:15TL Note: Topkapi Palace is really big, so you will spend half day for touring all of it. Do not program your visit on Tuesday, as it is closed. Basilica Cistern: Ticket Price: 10 TL Day 2: Shopping, Egyptian Bazaar, Top Restaurant Time Activity Tips & advice Cost Now it is time to relax. Go for shopping and discover other areas of the city. After you have left the hotel, go straight to the tram stop. Board a tram with direction to Bagcilar and get off at Beyazit stop as it is closest to the entrance of Grand Bazaar. You can also reach it by walk-it is only 15 minutes from the hotel. 09:00 Shopping and city discovery. This labyrinthine and chaotic bazaar, located in the Fatih area, is the heart of the Old City and has been so for centuries. It is near the University of Istanbul and the Mosque of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. There you can find more than 4000 shops selling carpets, leather goods and jewels. Depends on what you shop Time Schedule: 09:00-19:00pm. – Closed on Sundays Note: Ask for better price whatever you want to buy. 12:00 14:00 Go to Egyptian Bazzar: Return to the tram lines, take the tram with Kabatas direction and stop at Eminomu. There you can visit the Egyptian Bazaar. Spices, dried fruits, nuts and seeds are among the many treasures to be found at this bazaar. Lunch break at “Hamdi Restaurant” Hamdi Restaurant, Kalçın Sokak No. 11, Tel.: (0090)0212 444 64 63 Website: http://www.hamdirestaurant.com.tr/ Lunch break. Taste traditional Turkish food and enjoy an extra ordinary view of the city at the roof of ‘Hamdi Restaurant’. It is about 3 minutes by walk from Egyptian Bazaar. I would definitely recommend Beyti Kebap (Kebab wraps served with tomato sauce and yogurt), Patlıcan Kebap (Kebab with eggplant, cooked on a thick metal skewer), Fıstıklı Kebap (Kebab with pistachio) and Künefe (Shredded pastry with cheese) for dessert. Depends on what you shop 15 Euro [40TL] per person Day 2: Galata Tower, Bosporus Cruise Time 16:00 Activity Go to Galata Bridge and Tower (ZoomTip 2.1) 18:00 Bosporus Cruise Tips & advice Cost Very close to ‘Hamdi Restaurant’ is the Galata Bridge. This bridge connects the old city with Beyoglu, the northern district of Istanbul. Crossing the bridge you look west toward Europe and east across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and Asia. At the opposite side of the bridge stands Galata Tower, a stone tower 66,90 meters tall. There are signs which show the way going to Galata Tower. It is about 25 minutes by walk from ‘Hamdi Restaurant’. I would suggest to explore this part of the city on foot. 5 minutes before arriving to Galata Tower, you will need to climb some steps to reach Galata Tower. When you enter the tower after a few steps at the outside, there is an information desk where you can buy your tickets. Entrance Fee: 10TL There are souvenir shop and elevators in this floor. The elevator takes you to the 7th floor and after got out, you still need to climb steps to reach the 9th floor, which is the top floor. There is a restaurant and a cafe that are run by private companies on the top floor. Take some pictures and enjoy the great view of Istanbul. Relax and drink a coffee at the café of the tower. Return on the other side and walk at the docks of Eminomu, in order to experience the unique Bosphorus Tour by night. I did the tour that time as it offers the exact same tour as the regular Full Bosphorus Tour, but you can see Istanbul at night. The ferry leaves before dusk providing great Istanbul sunset views. It again stops in Anadolu Kavağı for a bit over two hours so people can enjoy dinner in the fish restaurants at the shore. Around 22:30 the ferry departs again for a moonlight cruise on the Bosphorus. Note: Private companies may walk over you and offer you a seat on their Bosphorus cruise boat. However, their tours are overpriced (double and more), shorter and on boats that can barely be called seaworthy. I recommend this tour with Istanbul Deniz Otobüsleri / Şehir Hatları lines, which are Istanbul’s official sea bus, fast ferry and regular ferry companies. Please check the availability here: http://www.sehirhatlari.com.tr/en/ Cost: 20TL 20 TL The Şehir Hatları Bosphorus lines sales offices are located on the right docks of Eminönü. The Full Bosphorus Tour by Night is only available on Saturdays during summer (July-August). 12:30 am Return To Hotel Return to the hotel. Take a taxi from Eminomu. It will cost you about 12TL. 12 TL for taxi Istanbul 2nd Day Map Get this Map Online: Click Here ZoomTip 2.1: Eat the Famous Baklava In the area of Galata Tower there are 2 of the best pastry shops in Istanbul, famous for their Baklava: • Köşkeroğlu [ pronnounced “keskeroglu”] Mumhâne Cad.
