Hydrops Fetalis - Arizona Simulation Technology and Education
Hydrops Fetalis Simulator Preparation:
1.
Activate healthy newborn scenario.
2. Cut 3 inch x 6 inch cling wrap and apply around the articulating neck, shoulders, legs, and the electronic cord bundle
feeding into Sim NewB’s bottom. Ensure all joints can move.
3. Ultra-sorb sheet, halved with absorbing material externally, and cut out openings for the neck, both arms and umbilicus;
slide on like a poncho.
4.
Adapt to manikin torso smooth and snug allowing for chest expansion. Secure with strips of duct tape.
5. Fill four, six inch latex balloons using yellow food color. Two chest balloons should contain at least 60 mL (chest
balloons). Evacuate as much air as possible and tie the ends. Two Abdominal balloons should be filled with 60 to 120
mL(abdominal balloons). Evacuate as much air as possible and tie the ends.
6. Take two, 6 inch rubber bands. Create a slip not over the tied end of the two chest balloons. Rest each balloon where the
tied end sits across the cotnralateral clavical. Pull the distal end of the balloon past the mid axillary line drawing the rubber
band behind the manikin’s back. Twist the rubber band around the distal end of each balloon and secure with duct tape.
7. Take the other two 6 inch balloons and tape the tied ends together with duct tape. Rest the secured ends just above the
umbilical opening with each balloon falling laterally around the umbilical opening and along the lateral abdominal walls (tape
can help prevent them from falling off the abdomen).
8. Obtain a skin from Sim Baby. Create a sternum out of any rigid material. Make sure you include a xiphoid process. Glue
it anatomically correct on the inside of the Sim NewB skin.
9. Fill a 3 inch balloon with 20-30 mL of fluid using red food coloring. This will be the heart. Tape it anatomically correct
onto the sternum (apex around 4th intercostals space) on the inside of the skin.
10. Place a 3 x 6 cm sponge or soft block horizontally along the nipple line securing with tape.
11. Create a small incision along the skin’s umbilicus. Insert 2-4 inches of simulated umbilical cord. Secure an empty 3 inch
balloon to the distal cord (inside surface of the skin) with a zip tie. Insert the balloon into the umbilical canal on Sim NewB as
you rest the skin anatomically correct onto the manikin. Fill the simulated umbilical with 3 mL of sim blood.
12. Secure skin to Sim NewB using any means you deem necessary. We have utilized latex tubing (used for simulated veins)
to secure the skin to the manikin. Ensure you can still appreciate good lung excursion.
