Downhill only Journal 2009
Tuesday December 30th 2008 will, in future years, be remembered as one of the most important dates in the history
of the Downhill Only Club, perhaps ranking only just below February 7th 1925.
On December 30th the Club President, on behalf of all the members, signed the document which purchased from the Fuchs family,
the freehold of a substantial part of the ground floor of the old Eiger Hotel. That evening, the D.H.O Club Room held it’s first social
event attended by upwards of 80 people. We were proud to be there!
You will all agree the Eiger is the most prominent building visitors to Wengen see on their arrival at the railway station. To purchase
and secure a permanent home for the club was a ‘once in lifetime’ opportunity. There was, in the current vernacular, “no way” the
purchase was not going to be made since subsequent generations would never have forgiven us.
Whilst recognising the generosity of the members who made the purchase possible, it is now time for all of us to dig deep and pay off
the bank loan by whatever means are required. As with the purchase of the Breithorn apartment, fund-raising events will no doubt
be held in the immediate future. A modest increase in annual subscriptions is entirely justified in view of the marvellous facility the
club now has. You will have recently received the new leaflet and letter from the President and we trust all members will contribute
whatever they can.
A dinner party to celebrate the clubs 85th anniversary will be held on Thursday February 4th during Macmillan week. Although the
venue (a village hotel) is yet to be confirmed, it would be appreciated if those interested in attending would complete the tear off slip
on page 5 and return it to the Hon Secretary.
Lastly, this coming season a new chairlift from the Arvengarten to the top of Salzegg will replace one of the last ‘T-Bar’ lifts in the
Scheidegg area. Whilst many will welcome the change, the great advantage of T-Bar’s were that having elbowed-out any competition,
one had plenty of time en-route, to chat up the attractive lady one had seen ahead in the lift queue. They also provided a perfectly
justifiable excuse to put ones arm around the said person if the going got steep! Not only has the superior uphill speed of a chair-lift
dramatically reduced the ‘ACUT’ quotient (Available Chat-Up Time), on a six-person chair she can shuffle out of arms reach! An
absolutely dreadful state of affairs! It is surely not too much to ask the new Director of the Jungfraubahn to ensure the Tschuggen
T-bar is left to provide an opportunity for old-fashioned romance down in the sunlit wooded glades!

of the old Eiger Hotel. Central, large and welcoming with its bar and kitchen inherited from the old Eiger; a real boon to all members.
What a scoop – which will I hope encourage more of the young, to take advantage of the facility.

Dear David,
Members may wish to be informed that Flybe fly from Southampton at 0645 each Saturday during the ski season arriving Bern at 0935
local time. Having arranged a taxi direct to Lauterbrunnen (Chf 40 per person), unpacked in our chalet, collected skis from Central
Sport, bought ski passes, we were in the Männlichen lift at 1230 on our way to the slopes We thus got an extra half days skiing. The
return flight left Bern at 1020 which meant an 0715 train from Wengen. Cost about £115 for the return trip including all taxes.
A very comfortable and friendly service on a small plane. which we can recommend to members.

A dinner to celebrate the clubs’ 85th Anniversary will be held on Thursday
February 4th 2010. The venue, menu and ticket cost is yet to be confirmed
but will be similar to past events of this type.

Snow-Camp Youth Charity
The club is currently searching for unbound copies of the D.H.O
Journal. The intention is to make a digital copy of each page so,
that the entire run can be contained on one or more CD’s complete
with index. The issues required are: 1936 to 1938, i.e the rarest of
all and 1946 – 1969. Please contact the Hon Editor with details of
copies you are prepared to loan.
Snow Camp is a small charity established in 2003 to assist innercity children experience snow-sports. The Skiers Trust of Great
Britain has been helping them financially but has reached the
limit of their support and are supporting Snow-Camps appeal for
funds. If you would like to receive further information on the

The D.H.O archive is always pleased to receive photographs which
illustrate skiing in Wengen and early years of the D.H.O. Items
from old family albums can be copied and returned. Wherever
possible please ensure that the names of those depicted, and the
year in which the image was taken are stated on the back of the
print.
Deserted Slopes - Compulsory Day Off
Between Christmas and New Year extremely high winds of
circa 150 mph battered Kleine Scheidegg causing the temporary
suspension of WAB services beyond Allmend. On walking past
the chairlift, the wood path adjacent to the railway appeared
closed and, in my infinite un-wisdom, I took the right hand path,
i.e up the ‘Rat Run’ to it’s junction with the Lauberhorn Race
Course. Sarah and I then walked (perhaps ‘staggered ‘ is the more
correct description) ‘diretissima’ up the left side of the absolutely
deserted ski slope, rejoining the footpath immediately to the right
of the tunnel through which the racers ski under the railway on
race-day.
Having seen no other people for what seemed like hours, we
eventually arrived at the Wengernalp Hotel. After an excellent
lunch and lots of drinks we then sauntered down the proper
foot-path back to Wengen.
The moral of this story could be that one should not let a mere
‘Steering Wheel Attendant’ navigate. However, I recall that on
one quite serious rally many years ago, travelling at 60 – odd
mph in the dark hours around 2 in the morning through Epynt
Forest in Wales, my navigator said “100 yards/90 left”. I did as
instructed and we went through a hedge into a field !!
The folowing day, a large group of members entrained to
Lauterbrunnen and walked up to the Isenfluh restaurant for
lunch.

Winter Season Report 2008/09
Part 1: GOING... GOING... GONE!
Paul Zvegintsov
Yes, honestly! We really have retired from the job! Please note that the word “retire” refers to the skiing job and
not to earning an honest crust in the real world, which sadly requires a lot more years of hard labour! Of course,
hopefully, we will soon be back again in Wengen (on holiday!).
We decided in 2000 that when I was 55 to 60, I would like to
hand over the job to someone else, however I was flexible and,
lacking a replacement candidate in 2005, I seemed to linger on
to 63! The D.H.O. part of my chequered career started in about
1970 when Piers Benson-Browning asked me to rep for a couple
of weeks. I managed to rep most years after that until 1989,
having just lost my winter job as an instructor in Aviemore the sad
news of Piers’ death prompted my mother-in-law to volunteer me
as his replacement. Subsequently, I have been lucky enough to be
kept on by the club for 18 years as secretary and then manager. I
cannot think of a life more suited for Maree and I. Firstly, because
we both love Wengen and have always enjoyed the outdoors and
skiing. Secondly because our marine business and holiday cottages
do not operate in the winter months. Thirdly, the weather in
winter in the West Hghlands leaves a lot to be desired!
Through the many years we have made literally hundreds of
friends, both within the club and with the people of Wengen.
We have loved the little flat which we cheekily always refer to as
“our flat” having been instrumental in its design and equipping.
We have had fantastic support from all the Presidents their
Committees and, of course, you the members. Hopefully, we have
not made too many blunders.
Through the job, we have been able to continue to bring up our
two boys in an outdoor environment and both have become very
accomplished skiers. Our dog Linnhe loves the snow and dragging
the sledge. So much so that she has become a little ‘huski’ - (it
must be too much barking!).

Since taking over , I have had three ambitions for the D.H.O.
Firstly to get a club house and I started to recommend places in
1991. Secondly, to get a flat for the secretary and, Thirdly, to
persuade the WAB to lay on a 4pm train daily from Grund to
Wengen with out changing and with Kaffee and Kuchen served en
route! I suppose that two out of three is not bad but there is still
time for the last one!
This last season has once again seen really good snow and as usual
even better after we left! Wengen continues to improve its lift and
snow cannon system so that if in future the snows should be a
scarce, the D.H.O can be assured of good sport.
I had some really good days skiing this year and enjoyed not
having to be in charge all the time. Sheridan quickly took on the
day-to-day running of the skiing and of course the onerous task
of developing the club house. Our final weeks were delightfully
filled with endless invitations and of course the fantastic dinner in
the Baren. We were so touched by our send off and the generous
donations. The cuckoo clock is in our kitchen to remind us of
Wengen and the donations, which you kindly gave, have been put
towards a wood burning stove so that in the future cold Argyll
winters, all we have to do to keep warm is to ......chop and chop
and chop wood. If it is very cold we can also light the fire!
We hope to see you all some time either in Wengen or in Argyll and
no doubt we will be back in Wengen very soon. Aufwiedersehen !

Part 2: Sheridan Killwick
I set off from London at 4.30am on Monday 15 December to drive to Wengen, my car fully loaded with all the
things I thought I would need for the winter season. Can you imagine my thoughts during my journey to Switzerland? I was about to start the daunting task of taking over from Paul who had been Wengen Manager/Secretary
for 17 years.
The drive went smoothly; I arrived in Lauterbrunnen at 7pm and
the friendly WAB staff helped me on the train with my luggage.
A complete stranger (who turned out to be a waitress at the Eiger
restaurant), helped me carry luggage to the flat. Thank you
Barbara - a true welcome to Wengen. I had always had fond
memories of the friendliness of people there and nothing has
changed.
There was lots of snow over Christmas; it snowed on New
Years Eve and the sky on New Year’s Day was a brilliant blue.
Everything looked set for an excellent winter, then the wind came
and blew all the snow from the side of the pistes leaving it rather
bare and ugly for the Lauberhorn race. Due to the excellent snow
cannons the pistes remained in very good condition throughout
January and it snowed again and again in February.
It was a very exciting to be starting my new role just as the
D.H.O was in the process of purchasing its very own club room.
Many will have fond memories of the “Hut” which has been
the ‘temporary home’ since the late 1970’s. After the inaugural
evening we used the “Hut” for several weeks of the season and
moved permanently to the new club premises in mid-January.
Susie Davies led a House committee to get the room up and
running. Paul, Max, other members and myself helped paint
the kitchen, put up memorabilia, fix the glass washer, move the
furniture, make an office for the Wengen Manager, purchase a
fridge and various other jobs. Many members very generously
donated items for the new club room.
There was an immediate increase on the number of members
coming to office hours and drinks parties. We could never have
managed 85 people in the “Hut”. Volunteers opened the club
room during the day for a few hours, internet access was set up
for member day time use, tea and coffee machines were donated,
and a library established. The system of members bringing bottles
remained as before but volunteers were needed to run the bar and
clear the glasses. (You will be pleased to know we have dispensed
with the plastic ones). New visitors to the new club room will be
particularly impressed with all the beautiful cups on display in
the glass cabinets.
The D.H.O club races went ahead as usual staring with the Heinz
cup pairs race during the New Year holidays and Paul’s cryptic
poetic clues were as good as ever. The atmosphere during the
Lauberhorn race weekend was brilliant and it was tremendous
fun watching both the downhill and the slalom events.
The following weekend our own 25 strong team competed in the
Inferno. I remember it well back in 1994 when I raced for the
D.H.O in the Inferno there were only six of us. My heart was in
my mouth at the start and all I could remember the whole way
down was my brother Edward’s words of advice “what ever you
do don’t fall” well I made it to the end without falling and even
qualified for a bronze medal.
D.H.O racing in Macmillan Cup week started with the Lucy
Dicker night slalom with some 40 entrants and the same for the
Macmillan. After prize giving on Thursday evening, almost one
hundred people attended Paul and Maree’s farewell party at the
Bären. It was a night to remember and a great way to thank them
for their hard work over 17 years.
In March, Liz Moore co-ordinated our five teams for the Amateur
Inter-club races held in Mürren and hosted by the Kandahar.
Please read Liz’ article for a detailed summary. The D.H.O will
host this race in Wengen in 2011 so please order your cat suit
now!!
On most days during the season we were able to offer members
two ski groups and this seem to work well. In some weeks we had
so many members that we could have done with two D.H.O reps
assisting the Wengen Manager not just one. It was great to see so
many members out skiing in Wengen and I hope to see more of
you next season. The first Presidents party to be held in the new
club room was a huge success with some 90 people there.
Lastly, my special thanks go to Paul and Maree for making me
welcome and to Max and Eden for their kind hospitality for
putting me up for the first half of the season.

President’s Report
Max Davies
This was a memorable season with two important events in the history of our Club.
Firstly there was the purchase and move to our new Club premises in the former Eiger
Hotel, secondly there was the appointment and changeover of the new Wengen Manager.
As a perfect background to these major changes, it was a really excellent skiing season
with brilliant snow conditions until well after Easter.
The new Club premises in the old Eiger Hotel are as good as you
can get. This purchase truly establishes the D.H.O in Wengen
for future generations and the feedback from all those who have
used it is very positive. We can at last put all our memorabilia
and cups on show, and the number already in the display cabinets
is amazing. One of these cabinets was donated by one of our
members and is very special. But as I said in last year’s report, we
now have to pay for it as it has been bought with borrowed money.
The cost was CHF820.000 and we have borrowed CHF400,000
from the local Raiffeisen Bank (currently @ 3 ½ %); the D.H.O
put in CHF100,000 from its funds. The rest was borrowed from
various members interest free for 3 years. The help and support of
the Fuchs family in getting permission to purchase these premises
was invaluable, and we hope we will continue to see them in
Wengen and in our Club for years to come.
Ours is a very busy Club. Coggins and Eagles run by Bob
Eastwood had more people this year than ever before, which is a
credit to Bob and to the D.H.O. The Racing and Training report
is worth reading as they too had a busy and a most successful
year. Their work, it is worth remembering, goes on all the year
round. The Schoolboys and Schoolgirls again had large numbers,
and here again the D.H.O involvement is most impressive. I went
to Meiringen for a couple of days to see the British Schoolboys
and to help award the prizes and saw that this is an impressive
and well-supported event to which many of our UK schools send
teams. Also this season, Liz Moore organised the International
School Boys races in Wengen and also put together four teams for
the Kandahar inter-club races held in Murren, whose success you
can read about in their report. In addition to all this we ran our
own club races most weeks in Wengen.
By the time you read this you will have received my letter regarding
raising funds. Please do help if you can; and if you haven’t been
to Wengen recently do come and enjoy the new facility. A meeting
place such as this is truly unique in any ski resort.
I must not forget to mention also the touring department of the
D.H.O. There was the usual club touring week run by John Rigby,
but day touring unfortunately did not take place this year due
to strong winds high up – the next week of course was perfect!
On the subject of touring, I was saddened to hear that Johnny
Webster, a member since 1953, died in April this year. Johnny
was a great off-piste skier and tourer who had been coming to
Wengen for many years with his wife, Ann. Many of us will recall
great days out with him and other D.H.O members. His cheery
personality will be greatly missed and our condolences go to his
family.
Until the middle of February Sheridan Killwick and Paul
Zvegintzov shared the position of Wengen Manager, and Paul left
after MacMillan Cup Week. A lot of tributes have been paid to
Paul and Maree, but I would like here also to thank them for
doing as excellent job over the past 17 years or so. They have
both become good friends to many of us; we wish them all the
best, and hope to see them in Wengen on the snow for many years
to come.
Sheridan then moved into the Breithorn and into her position
as sole Wengen Manager. It is always difficult to take over from
someone who has been there so long, but she knows both the area
and the D.H.O very well and did a sterling job in her first few
months. We wish her every success and I’m sure she will have the
support of all our club members next season.
Lastly, The D.H.O goes from strength to strength and is well
worth your support. I hope you will continue to give it, even if
you are unable to visit Wengen for a few seasons. Support to us is
also support to British skiing. Have a great summer and I hope to
see you on the slopes next season.
This was a good season for skiing, the only blight being the high
winds which hit the area on many occasions. There was one time
in mid-December when winds at Scheidegg were registered at over
250 kph. This, of course, blew all the snow off the exposed
areas, but the pistes were fine and remained so throughout the
season. Before and after Easter there were wonderful spring snow
conditions with lots of sunshine. I even skied from the top of the
Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen on 30th March – well most of the
way!

Coggins Report
Bob Eastwood and Rachel Anderton
Well what a fantastic season! We always had plenty of snow and, apart from a few days watching it blow away,
some lovely weather. We also had a record number of Coggins and Eagles! The Coggins “stats” are 109 kids came
for a total of 377 days which is a record during the past 12 seasons.
They were looked after by a regular team of Bob, Rachel and
Grace “I used to be a Coggin” McCutchen and various other
Swiss Ski School leaders. We had our last prize giving in the old
hut before our new more glamorous events in the new “hut”.
Every picture tells a story they say and this year we have many
very good photos so this year we would like to use our journal
space to share a few of them with you and show you all the fun
we had.Want to join the show?
Please, please, try to remember to tell us you when are coming
and how many days you are likely to ski with Coggins. It makes it
so much easier to get the right leaders to ensure an exciting weeks
skiing. The first bookings have already been made for next half
term and booking is now almost essential.

enthusiastic, fast and safe young skiers.

most beautiful mountains in the world (and learn their names
as well). We welcome all 7 to 13 year olds who ski to “racing
snowplough” standard and enjoy skiing with other English
speaking kids. We are definitely not ski school but you will learn
an awful lot about skiing faster and safer.

Racing & Training Report

I am writing this in Dubrovnik Croatia, at the FIS calendar conference, part of my biannual swanning around some
beautiful resort, mixing with the high and mighty in international skiing and pretending I am important! I love it.
The FIS will never run a conference in Bradford – having now visited Dubrovnik I can see why.
However, there is a cloud on the horizon – this time I am selffunded – and 5 star hotels do not come cheap. Our National
Federation, SnowsportGB has frittered away large sums of
money, owing to incompetence at the highest level, and it is a
miracle that it is still operating. Next season sees the Olympics in
Vancouver and we are hanging in there by a thread. I shall make
a bee-line for the local Lotto shop when I return to the UK.
The 2008/09 season was characterised by unusually large amounts
of snow. In some resorts it snowed every day for two months and
the World Cup circuit was able to operate thanks only to the
local army and large numbers of snow-cats. Expensive to say
the least.
The D.H.O too suffered from this abundance of snow. As the first
club to take advantage of the dedicated speed skiing piste in Sella
Nevea, (closed, netted runs and fixed time-keeping), five trainees
decided to attend. The day before the start of the camp it started
to snow, Sella Nevea was buried, as was the electricity supply and
very nearly the Porter family who escaped an Eskimo experience
owing to some hard digging and lots of luck.
The rest of the season ran according to plan and the camps were
well attended. We ran a full D.H.O programme – starting with
summer training (raining), October, Christmas in Austria followed
by the BARSC races, February in Bormio and Easter including the
Scottish and British Championships in Meribel .
I try hard to make these annual articles about the racing and
training sound interesting to the average D.H.O member. Racing
and Training IS interesting, it is full of hard work and sweat, a lot
of adrenalin and fear overcome by courage (downhill and superg at the British senior championships), lots of fun, occasional
heart ache and some triumph and that is as it should be – we are
producing excellent skier and equally excellent future citizens.
The British Championships in Meribel was the culmination of the
year and we all wanted to do well. British Championships; how
many athletes – whatever their sport – get to compete in their
national Championships?
The Juniors, or some of them, were up at 5 every morning and
they raced a downhill, a super-g, giant-slalom, slalom, supercombi (which is a speed event, either a downhill or a super-g,
followed by a one-run slalom held on the same day) and a parallel.
And this before they even tackled the Scottish Championships.
The Children had a slightly easier program, trained the first week,
and then raced a super-g, giant-slalom and slalom in the British
Champs 2009 and a giant-slalom and a slalom in the Scottish.
What fun, what adrenalin pumping and thrilling and heart
breaking too, it all is. And what memories to cherish. Heaven is
an eternal race course, on perfect snow, wearing bib no. 1.

Racing camps are not all about skiing and racing; we eat, sleep,
wax and tune skis and simulate a wee bit of fitness. We rejoice
with those who have done well and commiserate with those
whose skis came off, or straddled a gate or was disqualified or
was just plain unlucky. Ben Porter hit the snow at supersonic
speed, taking a giant-slalom gate with him in the process, ended
up in Moutiers Hospital and went home with a neck-brace.
The moment I saw him on the trolley waiting to be seen by the
doctor he said: “I need to wax my skis for tomorrow’s race”.
Normal D.H.O behaviour! Meal times are very social, the decibel
level exceeds the scale and D.H.O parents who eat with us are
tolerant to a degree. It is noisy, it is uncomfortable but it is
wonderful; 30 trainees letting off steam, all talking at once and
all telling his neighbour that, if it weren’t for that tiny straddle,
or that patch of ice, he would have taken his rightful place on the
podium. And rightly so!
The Children’s championships incorporate a parallel slalom. The
D.H.O fielded 5 teams each of 4 athletes – Stefan called them
Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Lauberhorn and Männlichen. How
unfair that two of our teams met each other in the quarter-finals.
But how completely fair that we won the finals, in a nail-biting
and noisy and cheering and totally domineering final. It was like
the Cup Final, Wimbledon and the Boat Race all rolled into one.
The D.H.O rules supreme – for the time being anyhow!

We are an alpine racing club, we are hard working and dedicated,
but we are also hard playing and, oh what fun it all is.
These Championships saw Alain Baxter’s swan song. He has been
the best ambassador for British skiing and his final run down the
slalom in a kilt, stopping off midway to down a glass of whiskey
with all the British Team trainers and then finishing the race and
skiing through an arch of skis held aloft by his team mates was a
fitting, and quite sentimental, end to such an inspirational career.
It is wonderful to think that our older trainees, those who no
longer attend the camps, are now sitting ski teaching exams and
return to us to rack up their compulsory hours. They ski for their
university or go and spend a gap year in the Alps. And above
all, they continue to keep in touch, to meet up, to email and to
remain good friends. That speaks volumes for our club and our
trainees.

British Schoolgirls’ Races 2009

Flaine seems like an old friend these days, having hosted the Schoolgirls’ Races for many years now and back they
were again on 26/27 January. The organisers arrived to find some terrible weather, rain on Friday with few lifts
open and concern about the forecast for the following few days. But on Sunday, the first day for most of the girls,
the sun came out and everyone had a wonderful time with plenty of fresh snow about for those who wanted to
venture further afield, away from the giant slalom and slalom training pistes on the Stade de Slalom.
The D.H.O team this year comprised Pamela Johnston, Katy
Peace and Phoebe Roth whilst the Bell twins, Hollie & Milla, and
their younger sister, Tara, skied for King’s College Taunton. Also
there was Ella Hartley, the winner of the D.H.O non registered
prize the previous year and now a D.H.O member, skiing for
Bryanston, Sophie Kimmerling (Aiglon), Florence & Victoria Bell
(King Edward VI Birmingham), Daisy & Violet Miller (Queen
Margaret’s York), Samantha Baxter & Lucy Butchart (Vikings)
and Lucy Maynard & Harriet Smith (Wycombe Abbey).
The first race on Monday, the giant slalom, took place on the
fléche course in sunny weather much to the relief of everyone.
It is always a popular race to start with as it gives the girls an
opportunity to get some miles under their skis before they have
to tackle the slalom the following day. There was some terrific
skiing with Emily Evans from Rochester Grammar winning ahead
of many older girls. Both she and Mary Denning, who was skiing
for Surbiton High’s A team, had only returned from the British
Children’s Team races in the Czech Republic the night before.
Stephanie Espinosa, skiing for Sandown Park, came in second
with Emily’s older sister, Charlotte Evans, in third place.
Emily was not only the overall winner but also the best in Children
2 (13/14 year olds) with Violet second and Mary Denning in third
place. Laetitia Hawkins Hooker (LEH) was first in Children 1
(11/12 year olds) with Florence second and Annabel Wright from
Heathfield St Mary’s third. Clementine Wood (St Mary’s Calne)
was the best unregistered child (14 and under) and winner of a
training week with the D.H.O, and Ingrid Christophersen was on
hand to present the prize in person. Ella was the best unregistered
junior (15 and above). Surbiton High’s A team was the best
British school followed by the Miller twins’ Queen Margaret’s
York and Rochester Grammar.
Of the other D.H.O girls, Ella was 13th, Katy 17th, Victoria 19th
and Daisy 20th. The D.H.O team was disqualified because Katy
was the only one of the three to finish. Florence & Victoria Bell’s
team from King Edward VI were 15th whilst the other Bells (no
relation, very confusing all these Bells!) from Taunton finished
33rd.

The parallel slalom, always the most fun of the three events,
took place on the bottom of the Stade after the finish of the giant
slalom. There was plenty of cheering going on from the finish
area and those in the finish hut had trouble hearing at times! The
young girls from the Club des Sports in Flaine, the organiser of
the races, and who had entered a team hors concours in the GS
and slalom, took first place in a very close run final with Surbiton
High’s A team. The Surbiton girls were thrilled to be dragged up
the slope by skidoo, along with their coach Paul Telling, in order
to compete in the final!
On Tuesday the weather wasn’t as nice but at least there was no
snow nor, thank goodness, rain or wind. The slalom was moved
back to the Stade because the powers that be decided to build
large jumps in the middle of the GS piste. The experienced racers
love the Stade but for those who have done precious little racing
it is extremely daunting and the whole slope can be seen from the
finish area. At one point the weather closed in so you couldn’t see
the top from the finish, probably a good thing as far as some of
the girls were concerned!
This time the tables were turned and Charlotte Evans came in
ahead of younger sister, Emily, in second place with Lottie Mayer
of Queen’s Chester third. This was a great result, not only for
Emily but also for Lottie as she is also in the children category and
they both beat many older girls. Emily and Lottie were first and
second respectively in the Children 2 category with Rosamund
Lees from the Samoens based College Andre Corbet third. Sophie
Caldwell (Abbey Gate College) was first in Children 1 with
Annabel Wright again featuring, this time in second place, and
Charlotte Ashworth (Godstowe) third. Clementine Wood was the
best unregistered child while Lucy Lintott from Wellington took
the junior title. Rochester Grammar was the best British school.
This time it was Daisy who was the best of the DHO girls in 11th
place with Pamela 15th, Katy 16th, Victoria 17th and Phoebe
20th. This was a good result for the D.H.O with all three team

members in the top 20 and the team finished 5th overall ahead of
Queen Margaret’s York in 6th.
Emily Evans was the overall combined winner ahead of sister
Charlotte and Rachel Wyld from Millfield. BASI (British
Association of Snowsport Instructors) was the major sponsor of
the races this year and very kindly gave a training course as a prize
to each of the first three overall as well as the best unregistered
junior, Ella Hartley. Emily was the winner of Children 2 with
Lottie Mayer second and Alice MacAulay (Surbiton High) in
third place. Sophie Caldwell came in first in Children 1 with the
consistent Annabel Wright second and Laetitia Hawkins Hooker
third. Annabel was, not surprisingly, the best unregistered racer
in Children 1 with Clementine Wood taking the Children 2 prize.
Violet, Daisy, Katy and Victoria were 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th
overall respectively. Ella was the only other one in the top 20 in
20th place.
The team event is always keenly fought and the team spirit is
there for all to see. Rochester Grammar came in as the best British
based school and the best team overall. A wonderful achievement
as the third member of their team was unable to complete so the
two remaining girls had to finish both events without mishap.
Queen Margaret’s York was second British school and third best
team overall while Sheffield High was third school. The DHO did
not qualify due to their disqualification in the giant slalom but
the Bells from Birmingham were 15th and the Bells from Taunton
24th.
As well as the D.H.O, BASI, and Kandahar, the races were
sponsored by MPI insurance brokers, Mind The Gap Year, Base
Camp Group – who gave many hoodies as prizes, the Ski Club of
Great Britain, Snow+Rock – who gave some good prizes, Meritz

British Schoolboys Championships

Meiringen is a safe haven for the British Schoolboys Races, history is all around us with Conan Doyle Square,
Conan Doyle Museum and various other buildings and roads named for the famous author. The Reichenbach Falls
where Sherlock Holmes met his ‘death’ are nearby.
The race team had their headquarters in Reuti at the top of the
Meiringen cable car in the Hotel Viktoria, this is a truly English
preserve where all the locals speak excellent English. British
skiing has passed Meiringen by for many years and now they
want us to return. This is great news as the Schoolboys Race
has been without a home throughout its existence and many
cannot understand why. This race has now come into its own
and is driven by the schools that want to take part. We have the
occasional troubles but the theme is now distinctly entrenched. It
is a formula that has evolved because, as organisers, we want to
provide what the racers and parents want.
The longer we stay in a resort the more difficult it is to retain
the same arrangement we made the first year. This can be
attributed to one area, the hotels and the local hotel association.
Unfortunately Wengen is not a natural race venue for us, the
Lauberhorn, although famous for its downhill, does not have a
convenient finish area for slalom and giant slalom, but we had
to put up with that during the two years we ran races there.
Once again attempts to arrange the accommodation in Wengen
collapsed. If the club wishes the race to return to Wengen we
need a more concentrated effort to bring influence to bear on the
hotels and hotel association.
The 2009 event was the tenth British Schoolboys Championships
and was a celebratory occasion. Whilst particular schools and
individuals are named below for their outstanding achievements,
all competitors, trainers and supporters should be commended
for their focus, dedication and good old fashioned team spirit
which served to bring about the best atmosphere the event has
ever had. Any attempt to list all the competitors and race results
would probably require space enough to cover the school leaguetable in a national broadsheet newspaper.
Everyone was most grateful to have Max Davies, President of
the D.H.O with us for the races and prize giving. The D.H.O’s
support of the race cannot and should not be underestimated.
It is only with the forward thinking and (dare I say it) down hill
only culture that they are able to provide the infrastructure to
create the backbone to what is a fantastic and truly important
sporting event in the scholastic calendar year. Also BASI. What
incredible educational gifts of support they provided a few lucky
winners.
Being able to ski is one thing, being able to teach is a whole
different story. By sending Rosalind McDonald to the race, BASI
added that little extra ‘VaVaVoom’ to the prize giving. No matter
what the monetary value of the prizes, George Harris (Reed’s),
Rob Cross (Abbey Gate College), Ian Williams (Cowbridge) and
Edward Reynolds (Glenalmond) can deal be safe in the knowledge
that they know what they’re talking about when it comes to a
stem turn and its application. BASI – thank you, long may this

The snow conditions were perfect for the race. There was more
than enough and after the first slalom had been set at “stupid
o’clock”, the organisers knew we were in for a great few days.
Reeds and Millfield, who have produced teams since the first
championships in 1999, continued to scream past the Tag Heuer
timing device in such a way that you’d think they spent their
summers training in South America! Be that as it may, St Paul’s,
Bedford Modern and of course the happy bunch from Dulwich
did very well this year as in previous championships.
Lastly, there is nothing more supportive to any competitor than
being applauded, consoled and rejuvenated by team mates, friends
and dare I say it – teachers! It is great to see this spirit alive at
The British Schoolboys Ski Racing Championships. Long may
this tradition continue.
The Sunday Times Cup for best British School team was won by
Reed’s, with Tonbridge and St Paul’s close behind. The SnOasis
Cup for best British based Children’s school team was won by
Dulwich, with Gayhurst 2nd and Dulwich’s 2nd team in third
place overall.

Thanks, gratitude and a slap on the back are due to many people,
especially our friendly Meiringen mountain man Christian, AKA
Bergfuhrer Chrigel Willi and his team. Accommodating and
willing, they made the course setting and the whole behind-thescenes run smoothly. Once again Christine Flueck greased the
cogs and sprinkled her bit of magic at the Tourist Office, allowing
160 or so British kids to turn up in their town and hurl themselves
down their slopes. The British Association of Snowsport
Instructors were our joint sponsors with SnOasis and Base Camp

Amateur Inter-Club Championships

Having competed in the first event in 2008 I offered to put together teams for the D.H.O for this year’s competition
which was held in Mürren between March 13th and 15th.
Remembering that the first competition had some serious racers
taking part, I believed if we drew on some of our ex-racers
for the Junior Teams and if we ‘oldies’ could stay fit and have
a little race training, we might stand a chance of putting the
D.H.O on top where it should be! I had enormous fun putting
the teams together and it took me back to all those happy years
when my children were involved with Racing and Training
under the expert guidance of Ingie.
Some of the older generation had a couple of day’s race training
on the Lauberhorn ace course under the expert (if not amused)
guidance of Christian Bühler of the Wengen Ski School. It’s
all very well going straight and as fast as you can as in the
Macmillan Cup Race but going through gates is a whole new
story! It certainly focused the mind and made us all understand
a little more about ‘attacking the course’ and ‘inspecting’ before
a race! We finally had the following five teams:

45 team were to being 1st! All the young in our teams had not
raced for several years but some excellent training stood them
in good stead.
There was also a fiercely competitive ‘Fun Parallel Slalom’
which carried no team points but was nevertheless taken quite
seriously! The D.H.O 2 boys were just pipped at the post by the
Lauterbrunnen young men for first place!
Kandahar once again did a superb job organising and running
the races on Winteregg in Mürren. We had marvellous weather,
a very friendly competition and a lot of fun. We hope this race
will continue in the same manner for many years to come.

In 2010, the SCI Club 18 from Cortona in Italy will host the
race over the weekend of March 6th/7th. We hope to take at
least 5 teams again if not more! Please contact me, Liz Moore,
at liblabmoore@yahoo.co.uk if you would like to participate
and also do a little fun race training the week before the event.
At the moment, we are allowed to take as many teams as we
like so the more the merrier!
Last, I would like to mention how lucky we were to have Marcus
Zumühl from Alpia Sports , Richard and Mark Gassmann from
the firm Gassmann Haustechnik in Wengen in our teams. When
asked if they would like to race for D.H.O all of them replied
that, although they would be delighted to, it was a long time
(if ever) they had done any racing. Well their excellent results
showed they certainly had not forgotten their technique!
A particular thanks to them and it was such a privilege to have
some locals from the village participating in the race.
Once again, many, many thanks to all those who participated
and especially those young who came along just for the weekend.
I very much look forward to seeing all of you again next year in
Italy, perhaps in cat suits but definitely in fur hats for the girls
- Italian style!! (see the prize giving photographs)

D.H.O Spring Tour 2009

Carmichael, Trish Dale, Phil Gepfert, Sally Ireland, Sue Jacoby, Jane & Ian McCormick, Clive Mitchell, John Rigby
and John Wright, , , , and Ian Murray (for just two days), together with our guide Adolph Schlunegger and aidede-camp Rene Seiler, gathered at Gsteig on Saturday 21st March.
We stayed in a charming chalet style hotel with rather small
rooms and enjoyed their speciality Raclette the first evening,
although it did sit rather heavily on our travelling tums.
Unfortunately, we were without Annabel for a few days as her
son broke his arm just as she was leaving, and Ian Carmichael’s
skis which he had left in Gstaad..
Sunday
Breakfast at 8.00am while Adolph went off to Gstaad to rescue
Ian’s skis. We set off in convoy to Diablerets where we took a
telecabine,T bar and poma to Isenau. Two very icy runs on the
piste to get our ski legs and then “Off Piste”. Adolph found
some beautiful pieces of powder despite the snow conditions
elsewhere. We had lunch in the sun by an old cowshed and
then on with the skins. A 1½ hour walk up following Adolph,
who cut our first and last “Paddy Hollington corner” at one
nasty point. We arrived at Stuedelistand, had a tea break and
then skied down finding more powder. Rene, distracted by Ian
McC’s cry of “ptarmigan” (as he near skied over a brace), fell
and injured his shoulder quite badly but bravely skied on. We
had a long run out on a path leading to a final icy road. John
Rigby’s hips held out and Sally, Sue and Jane’s knees survived.
That evening, the hotel gave us a delicious dinner overseen by an
over-enthusiastic (with the wine) waiter and his small, pompous
miniature poodle who sat in a shopping basket. Exhausted by
this gastronomic effort the hotel staff promptly went on holiday
for 2 days, leaving us the back-door keys and instructions to go
to the hotel down the road for our meals.
Monday
Trekked down the road for breakfast at 7.30 am. Storm
warnings so Adolph cancelled previous plans. At 8.30 we set off
for Reusch and by lifts various reached Sex Rouge that failed
to live up to it’s name! We had a couple of runs on a T-bar
with horrid snow and poor visibility. We then skied onto the
glacier and put on our skins cautiously, aware of the potential
crevasses under our feet. We climbed, aiming to reach the peak
of Diablarets, but stopped some 150 metres short as visibility
was closing in.
We lunched behind some rocks and built a D.H.O cairn at
3080m. Skied down over crusted wind-ridged snow with that
horrid feeling you aren’t moving because of the fog effect. Back
onto the piste and then up to the restaurant by the impressive
Devil’s Skittle Rock where we revived ourselves with glüwein
and chough feeding before skiing down a long run to the
cablecar restaurant. Phil disappeared off to make an important
property deal and Jane disappeared feeling seasick, whilst the
rest went back up for two more fast runs (keeping well in front
of a pack snowboarders), then more drinks and home. Trekked
down the road again through a few snowflakes for a warm
Swiss welcome and an excellent dinner at our locum eatery.
Tuesday
Woke early to the sound of snow ploughs! We had the most
magical day. It had snowed and snowed in the night - 50 cms
of new snow! After breakfast we donned our skins in the car
park of the nearby Victoria Hotel and walked up through the
snow laden trees for 2 hours to Adolph and Vreni’s family
summer chalet. Adolph went ahead for the last 150 yds and by
the time we arrived, the shutters were open and a welcome fire
was blazing. We ate our sandwiches, washed down by wine
and schnapps. We then climbed for a further hour to the peak
of Walighurli 2,100 m, before skiing down in glorious powder
through the trees, with intermittent snow and some sun. Even
Adolf fell once, blinded by snow going over his head as he
turned.
Afterwards Adolph and Vreni invited us for particularly
delicious local wine and cheese at their home and Adolph
showed us some film of his work in Kyrgizstan, teaching the
locals to be mountain guides. The equipment, especially the
lifts looked very uncomfortable!

a ledge facing South West, with apparently vertiginous views to
Leukerbad (pity about the storm, we couldn’t see a thing) and
gentler slopes to the North down to Daubensee and beyond
to the lifts from Kandersteg. We were the only guests and
caretakers Patrice and Danielle looked after us beautifully.
Wednesday
We were to travel early to our next location on the Gemmi
Pass up from Leukerbad in the Rhone Valley, but changed plans
due to poor visibility there. We drove from the village up the
mountainside on a farm track as far as we could before getting
stuck. We then climbed for 2 hours to Wallize Wispile 1,900m,
taking what Adolph called a Paddy Hollington “P and Tea” stop
en route. Some of the granite outcrops were quite interesting to
negotiate. Skied down through trees and new snow and back to
the Hotel in time to pay bills etc.
In the afternoon we drove to Leukerbad in convoy. We then
took an ancient (1957) mini cable car rising some 3,000ft to the
Gemmi Pass Hotel. This felt like being between the pages of
Alistair McClean’s “Where Eagles Dare” as the wind rocked us
from side to side in the cable car and we then dragged our cases
through a tunnel hewn out of the rock. Walking through glass
doors, we were transported to something more like a set on a
James Bond film. An amazing hexagonal building perched on

Thursday
The storm had continued through the night, and still no
visibility, so we took the cable car down to Leukerbad, drove
to the Torrenthorn area nearby and took the telecabine up.
Skies cleared and with hardly a person around, except for the
Swiss Ski Team, we were able to enjoy 70cms of powder in the
open and through the trees. We were split into two groups
and, after some ski technique lessons and stretching exercises
(that exposed a few deficiencies amongst those who thought
they knew better!) we were let loose: Rene’s group sent on their
way with the cry of “just do it”. Jane and Ian both did a bit of
tree hugging (though not together) and Trish’s buried skis took
some finding and cost her a few beers later. Lunch in the palatial
lift restaurant and afterwards we went even higher when some
T-bars opened. A remarkable day of off piste skiing. Back up to
the Gemmi where we saw some bearded eagles and had another
excellent meal and more film of our exploits.
Friday
Breakfast at 7.30am and left Hotel at 8.00. Poor visibility but
less wind. Skied part way down to Lake Daubensee, then, as we
climbed for 1½ hours up the Lammeran, the weather began to
clear and we could see some peaks. The climb was abbreviated
owing to avalanche danger. We skied down in increasingly
heavy powder to the lake, skinned back along it and climbed
back up to the Hotel, to see for the first time the panorama
of the mountain tops, from the gleaming Dent Blanche to that
evocative mountain the Matterhorn in the distance. Lunch in
the Hotel and down in the 1.30pm bucket. Ian McCormick
succeeded in leaving his ski behind, which slightly delayed our
departure (after much hugging and kissing and “see you next
year”) from a most memorable tour which was so imaginatively
arranged and executed by Adolph, aided and abetted by Rene.

D.H.O Walking Week 2008

Until September 2008 I had only ever visited Wengen in the winter and was looking forward to seeing it verdant
and green. However, when I arrived it was raining, misty, and there was a sprinkling of snow on the trees not much
further up the mountain! Fortunately that was as bad as it got and the weather improved throughout the week.
There were twelve of us booked into the Sunstar and we were
joined on most days by other club members who had their own
places in the village. On the Monday twenty-two of us met for
lunch in the Männlichen restaurant!
The week started with a relatively easy walk on the Sunday. In
a very fine drizzle, and with poor visibility, we walked down to
Lauterbrunnen which had the benefit of being below the clouds!
After a leisurely coffee we followed the road up to Isenfluh,
where we had an even more leisurely lunch, before carrying on
up to Grütschalp. There were several viewing points on the
way but unfortunately no views! From there it was back to
Wengen by cablecar and train.
On the Tuesday several of us did two walks, either side of
the “walking the cows” ceremony. This is when some of
the villagers dress in traditional costume and walk the cows
down to Lauterbrunnen for the winter. The cows themselves
were decorated with flowers and huge bells and it was quite a
spectacle, though I suspect it is put on mainly for the benefit
of a handful of tourists. One cow broke ranks and tried to go
into the Co-op – she must have heard about the special offer on
the moosli!
After this we had a picnic lunch on the train to Eigergletscher
and followed the Eiger trail down to Alpiglen. The conditions
made this a dramatic walk, with quite deep snow in places and
the famous north face appearing and disappearing in the clouds.
We also saw a spectacular waterfall, a taster for those in the
group that went to the Trümmelbach Falls the following day.
If I thought Tuesday was good, which I certainly did, Wednesday
was even better and undoubtedly the highlight of my week.
Trusting the weather forecast which said it was going to be a
bright sunny day five of us met for breakfast at 7.00am before
catching an early train down to Wilderswil. From there we
took a quaint old mountain train up to Schynige Platte, a place
that had completely passed me by until this week. We were
going to walk to First, and knew from the signs at Schynige
Platte that we had to reach there by 5.00pm, when the last
bubble descended. This gave us more than seven hours, which
proved to be ample.
The forecast was correct and it wasn’t long before we stripped
down to short-sleeved shirts and shorts for the first time in
the week. The first part of the walk was in alpine meadow,
with great views of Interlaken and Lake Brienz. We also got
an outstanding view of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau soon
after. The terrain became quite rocky for a while before we
started our ascent of the Faulhorn. While not particularly
steep this was long, and made more difficult by the amount
of snow on the ground. Still, once we’d made it, it was more
or less downhill all the way to First. We dropped below the
snowline, walked along the edge of two lakes and saw (and
heard!) marmots gambolling in the meadows before eventually
reaching the bubble lift. A fantastic day, with a huge variety of
scenery and plenty of marvellous views. And the company was
great as well!
As usual in Wengen the social life was busy. On the Wednesday
Roger and Sarah Hoyle gave a drinks party and on Thursday
the D.H.O invited many friends from the village to a social
evening in the hut. On Friday Suzi Fuchs invited us to her
apartment for a few glasses of wine after she had led a walk
from Gimmelwald to Chilchbalm and back down to Stechelberg
for a late lunch. This walk was interrupted for a few minutes
to let a herd of pigs come past on a narrow forest track! In
addition to the organised affairs some of us felt that it was our
duty to ensure that Jeremy’s ownership of Rocks bar would be
a successful one!
My “easy” day was Thursday, when Martin and I walked
up the Männlichen. Somehow we managed to take a wrong
turning on the way up, but this meant that we saw a tree being
felled at fairly close proximity. Close enough to make us run
when it hit the ground anyway! The route we took was short
and steep so we stopped regularly “to admire the views”. We
also walked through the avalanche prevention barriers, which
are much bigger than they appear from the cablecar. We were
back down by early afternoon and helped get the hut ready for
the evening.
This holiday seems to be an annual event now, and I can
thoroughly recommend it. The atmosphere is very relaxed
and no-one is put under any pressure to do anything that they
don’t want to. On most days we didn’t decide what walk we
would do until that morning’s breakfast and there were usually
at least two groups doing different things each day. The routes
themselves were well signposted and easy to follow – easier
than the maps in my opinion! I’ll definitely be back for more,
and may even get to go up to Jungfraujoch next time.

A Fitting Farewell

It has become a sort of tradition for D.H.O members to sit down at dinner in the Bären Hotel dining room after the
MacMillan Day prize giving. This year, the attendance at the dinner packed the dining room as never before. The
occasion was a demonstration of D.H.O members’ appreciation of the work done by Paul and Maree Zvegintzov
during Paul’s many years as Wengen Secretary.
President Max Davies delivered the main speech and
presentations. He emphasised how much the Club had grown
during Paul’s tenure and, as a result, the huge number of people
Paul and Maree had shown around the mountains. He pointed
out that Paul had from the outset made the case for the D.H.O
finding its own, more spacious premises, and that it was so
fitting that Paul and Maree were there to see this ambition
fulfilled before the end of their tenure. The presentations
included a cheque to which so many members had contributed,
and a large, colourful cuckoo clock which (mercifully), can be
switched off at night.
Paul thanked everyone for a fine dinner and send-off, along
with the presentations. He promised that Wengen and the
D.H.O had not seen the last of him and Maree.
Paul’s successor, Sheridan Killwick, expressed her appreciation
for the welcome Paul and Maree had given her and for the
smooth handover.
Like all occasions of this sort, the evening was an act of
celebration tinged with the inevitable sadness of saying “au
revoir”, certainly not farewell, to someone who had become a
friend of everyone in that crowded dining room.

Obituaries
John Webster (1927 – 2009):
Johnnie and his sisters were brought up in some style in Sheffield with a Rolls-Royce
in the garage and a liveried chauffeur. At the age of ten he was sent to school at
Chateau d’Oeux for his health and to learn French. It was there that he learned to
ski.
The WW2 years and immediately after were taken up with Repton and National
Service followed by a short spell in his fathers business which, as Johnnie was
an outdoor person, was not a success. He wanted to farm and, after a period in
Herefordshire, in 1952 he purchased his own farm at Westwood in Nottinghamshire.
In 1954 he married Anne and before long their three daughters, Valerie, Libby and
Caroline arrived.
He joined the D.H.O in 1953 and served on the Committee for many years, regularly
going to London for meetings. He would spend five to six weeks as a rep in Wengen,
skiing with members during the day and indeed, no one knew all the possible – and
nearly impossible – ways through the woods of the Wengen mountains better than
Johnnie. This was real cross country stuff, going over streams and fences, and not
for the faint hearted! He would find spring snow on the Männlichen in the morning,
moving round to the Lauberhorn to catch the good slopes for as long as the snow
lasted. In 1994 he was awarded the clubs Gold Badge and a look at the D.H.O prizes
dotted around ‘Westwood’ testified to Johnnie’s skiing prowess and youthful turn of
speed. Even aged 80 he was still game for the odd club race.
However, his real love was for off-piste and ski-touring which he ran for the club
for many years He organised some wonderful ski tours both around Wengen and
in many other parts of Switzerland, France and Italy. If you look at the maps, there
aren’t many places that Johnnie didn’t cover. In 1987, he climbed Mont Blanc with
a group of D.H.O friends guided by Adolf Schlunegger He was a robust and reliable
tourer who got on well with the guides. When he took a tumble, it tended to be a
‘heart-stopper’ as when he fell on the front of the Wetterlücke causing guide Freddie
Fuchs almost to have apoplexy!

Johnnie was immensely competitive, with a great sense of fun whether driving a
fairground bumper car before a ski tour or racing a skidoo at highly illegal speeds
across Yellowstone National Park during a warm-up prior to a week’s heli-skiing. At
60, he tried snowboarding and hang-gliding in case he was missing something.
Sadly, various age-related ailments conspired to slow Johnnie down. The hip flasks
became champagne breaks, but the fun and enthusiasm remained At home he kept a
small herd of Highland cattle which stayed with him until his final move to Retford.
They added a touch of class to his establishment and definate class to Anne’s dining
table. Johnnie was a life-long much liked and respected Freemason, as shown by the
number at his memorial service.
Lastly, Johnnie did so much for the D.H.O and left behind very many friends. His
wish was that his ashes be scattered over his beloved Bernese Oberland.

David Stewart Clarabut D.S.C. ( 1923 - 2009):
David died on Tuesday 6th January peacefully at home with his family. He led a full
life that included being awarded the DSC in 1944 for his war efforts which included
the famous strike on the German battleship “Tirpitz”.
After the war David joined the local family firm “London and Rochester Trading
Company” and eventually in 1980 became Chief Executive of Hays Group. He had
many other City interests including being Master of the Worshipful Company of
Watermen and Lightermen in 1972 and Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company
of Shipwrights in 1982.
David had interests in many other sports, but his main loves were skiing and yacht
racing and he became a member of the D.H.O in 1956. With his wife Deirdre and
their five children David made over 30 visits to Wengen always staying in the Eiger
hotel. He had his own style of skiing but rarely came to grief! He would often be
seen at the round table in the Stübli bar, a favourite haunt of the D.H.O at the time,
discussing the day’s events and those magnificent mountains. I once remember him
saying to Karl Fuchs whilst drinking his Kummel “I got the whole family down ’Oh
God’ today, including a couple of Grandchildren!” Surrounded by his family and
friends David was often at his most relaxed when in Wengen. During his last visit in
spring 2006 whilst he did not ski he did get to the top of the Männlichen for lunch,
where he had his favourite Rösti and Dôle whilst taking in the breathtaking views
and looking at his favourite mountain, the Eiger.
He had several beautiful yachts on the River Medway named “Vendetta”. Prior to
big boats he was a very keen Dragon sailor and on one occasion in 1957 represented
the UK in a four boat team against the Royal Danish Yacht Club in Denmark. The
four Dragons were taken to Copenhagen in the Royal Yacht Britannia in company
with the Queen on a state visit. David had many successes on the water not only
on the River Medway but also away from home including coming 2nd in the 1957
Edinburgh Cup and in 1967 he was the winner of the Queens Cup Cowes.
David is survived by his wife Deirdre and his five children Pepita, Nicola, Deedle,
Tania and Philip as well as his 14 grand-children and three great grand-children.

Keith Room (1922- 2009):
Keith Room died on March 26th 2009 aged 86. He had joined the D.H.O in 1972,
was a regular competitor in the Macmillan Cup and in 2003 won the Heavenly Bowl
aged 80, after which success he decided it was time to hang up his skis.
On leaving Shrewsbury School in 1940 he served with the REME, took part in the
liberation of both Singapore and Malaya and left the army in 1946 with the rank
of Major. After two years at Corpus Christi, Oxford, in 1949 he joined Standard
Telephones & Cables and held various posts in Thorn Electrical Industries until his
retirement in 1982.
We shared our holidays in Wengen for over 30 years during which period he proved
a good companion with a strong sense of humour (he could do a wicked impression
of his employer Sir Jules Thorn) with many loyal friends. Keith Room never married
and looked after his mother at their home in Bromley until her death.

Virginia Hulbert Edington-Brown (1947 – 2009):
Virginia Brown (née Cox), Ginny or Gin to her many friends, died suddenly at the
end of January 2009 shortly after her return from a skiing holiday in St Anton with
her husband Charlie, and friends. They had had a wonderful week and a perfect last
afternoon enjoying the sunshine and powder. Ginny died unexpectedly in hospital,
after a very short illness, the following Friday.
Gin joined the D.H.O as one of Ros Hepworths racing juniors in 1961. She was
educated at Châtelard School, above Lake Geneva, in Switzerland and was one
of several girls from the school spotted by Ros. She continued to train and race
for D.H.O throughout her teens and was a regular contributor of articles to the
Journal. She joined the British Ski Team in 1966 and represented GB in races all
over Europe.
After retiring from ski racing Gin went to work in Aviemore as a ski instructor and
met her future husband Charlie. They both loved Wengen and the Bernese Oberland
and began touring with Oskar Gertsch Senior around the Bernese Oberland, and
more recently the Aosta Valley. Gin also joined the British Masters Ski Team and
won an international event in Andorra. In 2007, to celebrate her 60th birthday, she
organised a chalet holiday for a group of friends in her favourite ski resort, Wengen.
Unfortunately, she had allowed her membership of the D.H.O to lapse around
1995.
Gin will be best remembered for her sense of fun and zest for life with which she
imbued her many friends. Her love of planning (or plotting as she preferred to call
it), be it a trip to the cinema, or long distance journey to foreign parts by train, always
drew in an enthusiastic group of companions for her next adventure. Her ashes have
been scattered in her beloved Switzerland, beside her old school and facing the Dent
du Midi. Her death leaves a great gap in the lives of all who knew her.

Wengen Curling Club 2008

Reports had filtered back to the UK of the wonderful festive season in Wengen with plenty of snow and sunshine
- and so we arrived to find the BOCA outdoor championships being played in perfect conditions – 36 teams using 9
sheets – a magnificent sight. Although representing the Jungfrau Club on this occasion, ‘our’ team, including Ueli
Trachsel, Andrew Corcoran and Detlef Scholten finished well up the prize list.
It was sunny and cold when four teams lined up to battle for the
Reinert Stoffer Cup. The winners, and the first names on the
boards for 2009 were Walter Marti, Diane Paterson, Godfrey
Bedford and Mike Hales.
On the Saturday of the Lauberhorn Race, six teams of three
participated in the Lehman Bonspiel. All teams got to pick
from the ‘bottle stall’ and Peter’s Dolly was presented by the
President to Susan Hinds, Sue Bedford and Loreen MacKenzie.
The thermometer had risen slightly for the Wright Bowl
bonspiel, won by Ueli Trachsel, Diane Paterson, Elsbeth Marti
and Laura Corcoran. (Did you realise that your mother-in-law,
Ann, won this trophy 28 years ago, Laura?)
With some hotels not taking curlers until after the race weekend,
there was a disappointing entry of only six teams for the Hotel
& Chalet Cup. On the second day, a few snowflakes forced us
inside for the semi-final although we were outside again for the
final which resulted in a triumph for team Eiger - Diane and
Robin Paterson with Andrew and Laura Corcoran.
It was encouraging this year, to see eight teams entering for
the Pairs Competition. They all enjoyed some convivial curling
which resulted in well deserved prizes for all. For the 4th time
in 5 years, Toni Loretan was in the victorious pair, this time
with Sue Bedford.
Still beautiful weather for the Bühlmann Cup and after a two
day schenkel competition, the top rink of Diane Paterson, Allan
Higgins, Elsbeth Marti and Margaret Gibb received the trophy
from Loreen.

For those unaware, the Eiger is no longer a hotel but is being
converted into appartments. The downstairs bar and restuarant
have been taken over by Rudi and Bea who made us most
welcome on many occasions. The D.H.O have moved in to the
old residents lounge which of course means they have departed
from our clubhouse (after a ’provisional’ arrangement made in
1977). We wish them well in their splendid new quarters and
hope our longstanding fellowship will continue.
They say the sun shines on the righteous and the ladies were
certainly lucky when they assembled to play for the Margaret
Walker Quaich. Having done all the preparatory work, Donald
White was unfortunately unable to be there on the day to keep
them in line, however all went well, including the lunch at the
Victoria Lauberhorn and the gluewein at the ice-rink, courtesy
of the Eiger! Valerie Browning presented charming cushions
to the winners, Pat Orr, Christine Reid, Margaret Gow and
Loreen MacKenzie.
We were now at maximum numbers (14 teams) and guess
what – after a week of sunshine, snow forced us to play for
the President’s Prizes in the ‘cowshed’. On day one we were
obliged to play shortened games and unsocial hours to get
down to 4 teams for the traditional semi-finals on the second
day. President Mike presented the Hewitt Cup and his prizes of
engraved replica Welsh miners lamps to Norman Walker, Bruno
Wezel, Rosemarie Rösti and Iris Simpson.
The gentlemen had to endure the long trek to Mürren but were
able to enjoy some social curling in the glorious weather and
an even more sociable lunch, before rushing back to catch the
climax of the Ladies competition.
But this was not the only presentation as we gathered downstairs
in the Eiger for the AGM. Jimmy MacPherson had decided not
to come out for what would have been his 40th year in Wengen.
Over these many years, his famous tartan hat had been well
admired by a certain member so he had sent it out and asked
that it be bestowed to a bemused Bruno, who wore it with great
pride for the rest of the season.
We were pleased to welcome 11 newcomers to Wengen this
year, including Inglis and Katherine McAulay – but it transpired
this was not the first time they had curled in Wengen when
we noticed Katherine’s name on the board as a winner of the
Hewitt Cup in the early eighties.
Another big entry for the Wengen Cup and the weather let us
down again – by the end of the first afternoon it was so stormy
that the curtain at the ‘cowshed’ had to be raised, resulting
in a premature end to the curling. The event was, however,
eventually completed with Karl Hindenlang, Bev Brown, Linda
MacDonald and George Gilmour the ultimate winners.
Vernon Knapper handed over a framed picture which is to hang
in the clubhouse, of the team that achieved the 8-ender playing
for Remy’s Muffin at Perth.

Better weather arrived and play was all outside in the sunshine
for the popular Park Hotel Prizes. At the end of a two day
knock-out tournament with a low road, Norman Walker found
himself in his third consecutive final, emerging as winner with
Detlef Scholten, Nicky Bell and Erwin Wenger. Prizes were
presented by Margrit Leemann at the munificent reception in
the hotel.
As ever our thanks must go to Honorary Member Eric Hinds
for his long term support of the Club, in particular sourcing
many of our prizes and updating the names on our collection
of trophies.

With numbers dropping off we were back down to four teams
vying to get their hands on the Wyllie Shield, still with glorious
sunshine and keen ice. New committee member Christina
Lockyer ultimately handed over the shield to Harry Mitchell,
Andrew Corcoran, Barbara Scholten and Loreen MacKenzie.

The final day started off with a bizarre incident when Toni
Loretan was knocked over on the nursery slope by a landing
paraglider. However he was fit enough to continue in the
fun bonspiel for the Holland Cup, where the teams played 5
ends against each of the other rinks. The Secretary had been
clearing out the prize cupboard so everyone got to pick from
the assortment of odd prizes with the winners, Harry Mitchell,
Robin Paterson and Graham Browning having first choice.

Fastrack your way into the
exciting world of ski instruction...
You’re passionate about skiing, be it racing or recreationally with friends and family but those few weeks
away to the mountains just sometimes don’t feel enough. Do you dream of skiing every day of the winter?
Never missing those powder days, sunny days, emptier slopes, and the atmosphere, not to mention the
lifestyle you experience in the mountains.
Why not consider a ski ‘Gap’ course! Imagine skiing every day of the season or being able to jet out to your favourite
resort to ski, share your passion for the sport and get paid to be there. The ski gap course market is getting bigger all
the time, but to help simplify everything for you I have written this article that will explain the options available to you,
what the course should include, details about the qualifications and where you can work with your new achievements.
WHEN?
Firstly and most importantly is when to do your Gap course. There are 2
options. Before the ski season starts (summer or autumn) or during the
winter season. If you choose to do your training during the season then
you will be able to enjoy skiing a fully open ski resort and all the facilities
and pleasures that come with it, resulting in being qualified by March with
the possibility of working for the remainder of that season. Choosing the
pre-season course will mean that the majority of the course is run on an
alpine glacier. This option results in becoming a fully qualified ski
instructor before the season meaning you are free to enjoy the skiing,
lifestyle and pleasures of a fully open ski resort being paid to be there!
WHERE?
Where to do your gap course? Here the choice is endless. There is a ski
gap course in almost every corner of the globe from the French Alps to
Canada to New Zealand. This choice could be made by a location
preference, or better still by which governing body you wish to qualify with.
I am going to focus purely on British Gap courses all of whom qualify their
instructors with Basi (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) the
benefits and pathway to certification are detailed below.
CONTENT?
Different course providers will offer slightly different course content
primarily to try and differentiate themselves, all courses though should
include:
• Personal performance training.
• Teacher training.
• Basi exam fees.
• Accommodation.
• Lift pass.
• First Aid.
• Ski school experience and shadowing.
BASI
Basi is the British governing body for all British Snowsports qualifications,
with a structured pathway in Alpine, Nordic, Telemark, Adaptive, and
Snowboarding disciplines. In Alpine skiing Basi has a 4-stage system,
which is structured to help you gain worldwide recognized qualifications
and career opportunities. Full details on the pathway to level 4 certification
can be found on their website. Below I have detailed only the Gap inclusive
levels. In order to begin you must enrol on the 1-week training course,
these are held in both the Alps and also UK facilities. You must complete all
elements of the level 1 course to receive the qualification prior to
working as an instructor, then you must complete a further 35 hours work
experience (teaching preferable) prior to booking on to your 2-week level
2 course. You can complete level 1 from age 16, and commence level 2
training, but need to be 18 years old to achieve the full level 2 ski instructor
licence.

WHERE CAN YOU WORK?
Basi level 1 instructor allows you to work in non-mountain environments
such as UK snowdomes and dry slopes, this is similar to the old ASSI
qualification. Basi level 2 is recognized worldwide allowing you to apply
for work in Europe (excluding France) America, Canada, New Zealand
and Australia (with visa). Some countries require you to complete a
training course within their system however this is usually included in any
Instructor training, or as a week prior to employment.
Now all that’s left is to sign up, and you could be just 8 weeks away
from one of the best jobs in the world.
