DEFECT MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Certain defects in a web will cause problems in subsequent processes. Also,
for quality purposes, these defects must be identified and removed prior to
shipping to your customers. RYECO’s Defect Marker places a colored or
invisible mark on the web at the machine direction location of the defect.
The system can be used manually by machine operators, interfaces with
any Web Inspection System, and can be triggered automatically with any
process control equipment. Marked defects warn downstream operators
to take preventative actions to avoid downtime and ensure that your
customers receive only your best product.

CODE MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Sometimes it is necessary to encode intelligent information into a moving
web. The most common information encoded is that of incrementing
length or footage. Other information that can be encoded relates to rollID or lot numbers. The encoded information entered can be “read” and
decoded downstream and used for higher level process control. All major
brands of Web Inspection Systems use RYECO Code Marking equipment
to synchronize the web to a defect map for automatic unwind control.
RYECO also offers a Decoding System to read back RYECO-generated
codes and a stand-alone Length and Position Control System that utilizes
the unique encoding ability of the Code Marker to control the un-winding
phase of a converting operation.

BREAK MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
An undetected web break in a jumbo roll of paper, tissue or any continuous
web product will cause major problems in downstream processes. It is
necessary to mark every break so downstream converting operations can
take proper corrective actions. The practice of hand marking is unreliable
and unsafe safe. Now, with the mandate of safety cages going up around the
reel area, access for hand marking is becoming impossible. RYECO’s Break
Marking Systems offer a safe and reliable method to mark web breaks
safely and automatically.
BENEFITS OF MARKING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Marking every break and folded edge in a jumbo of Tissue Paper
• Reducing waste caused by unplanned stoppage of tissue converting
operations
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...

SHEET COUNT MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Accurate sheet counts are critical in many processes. Inaccurate counts
can cause problems and may result in customers not receiving the desired
number of sheets. RYECO’s Sheet Count Marking Systems solve this
problem by monitoring sheet counts and routinely placing marks on a
specified number of sheets (i.e., marking every 100th sheet in a stack). This
ensures that as sheet stacks are further processed, there will be a visual
reference for both operators and process control equipment that indicates
the number of sheets present.
BENEFITS OF MARKING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Ensuring exactly the correct number of sheets in a stack is
processed
• Not having to recount sheets multiple times
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Having the system mark automatically instead of by hand
• Reducing time spent counting by hand
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Eliminating the dangerous practice of hand-flagging on moving
machinery
• Reducing tedious manual counting by operators

STRIPE MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Product alignment or product type identification is critical to many
customers, especially when similar material types or grades make visual
identification difficult or impossible. A RYECO Stripe Marking System
creates continuous or dashed marks for the entire length of a product to
indicate product type or a unique characteristic of the material. Marks
can represent a specific material grade used in a multi-ply product, filter
media orientation, or indicate the coated or uncoated surface of a material.
Various marking colors available in the RYECO system can also be used to
uniquely identify multiple products on the same manufacturing line.
BENEFITS OF MARKING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Providing clear indications of product orientation to downstream
processes and end users
• Preventing processing a web in the wrong orientation or position
in a multilayer product
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Marking automatically and continuously instead of making marks
by hand
• Reducing time spent determining correct roll orientation while
processing
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Eliminating the dangerous practice of hand-marking the roll

END OF ROLL MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
When making small rolls from a larger roll it is critical to know if there
is enough material left on the roll to make a complete set. Running out
of product on a cash register, credit card machine or similar consumer
product can cause a major problem. Conversely, you don’t want to throw
away a roll because you’re not sure how much material remains. A RYECO
End of Roll Marking System creates a mark at or near the end of the roll
giving operators and users sufficient warning to replace it with a new roll
prior to running out.
BENEFITS OF MARKING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Eliminating short rolls of product during converting
• Producing a more aesthetically uniform mark than contact marking
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Visually warning converters when they are near the end of an
input roll
• Preventing a new daughter roll with insufficient product on the
input roll
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...

REGISTRATION MARKING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
During many web processes it is necessary to have precisely spaced marks
on the web for use in downstream processes. The RYECO Registration
Marking System uses a precision encoder signal or other precision input to
place marks with a high degree of accuracy. These marks can be used to fire
a knife for sheeting, or for many other converting operations. The RYECO
Registration Marking System can be used in conjunction with a RYECO
Distortion Monitoring System to allow the user to measure all stretch and
shrinkage in a flexible web.

PLY BREAK DETECTION
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Occasionally, during the conversion process of a tissue web, it is necessary
to laminate one or more plies together to achieve a final product. Should a
break or fold-over occur on a single ply of a multi-ply web, excessive waste
will result further downstream.
RYECO’s Model PBD-9007 Ply Break Detection System identifies a break
or a fold-over in any ply of a multi-ply web to improve operating efficiencies
and product quality.
BENEFITS OF PLY BREAK DETECTION
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Making a more sellable product
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Eliminating downtime on subsequent converting processes
• Automatically memorizing the sheet after each roll change or
break
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Improving safety and saving time by not subjecting operators to
hand marking.
• Immediately alerting operators of dangerous roll wraps as they
occur
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The RYECO Model PBD-9007 Ply Break Detection System is a sensor that is mounted on one surface of the
web on the converting line. Once the sensor is installed, it is set to memorize the sheet characteristics of the
multi-ply web. If any sudden change occurs, the sensor interprets this as a break, either in one or all of the plies.
At each new roll change the sensor automatically re-memorizes the web to account for grade changes or color
shifts.
During the converting process, a fold-over can occur after any slitting operation. To take full advantage of a Ply
Break Detection System’s benefits a sensor should be placed just downstream of every slitter. The sensor has a
unique patented Air Purge design to reduce the likelihood of tissue-dust contamination. The system can sound
an alarm and is commonly interface to a RYECO marking system such as a Break Marking System or Defect
Marking System.
FEATURES OF PLY BREAK DETECTION
• Offers continuous patented stary-clean Air Purge design on the sensor optics
• Works on any color of web
• Provides quick disconnect air and electrical connections for easy installation
• Comes with fiber-optic cables in 10 meter and 20 meter lengths

MARK DETECTION
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Marks placed on the web in an upstream process usually indicate a warning
to a downstream operator. Unless the operator is watching the web
constantly, they can miss the mark, causing unnecessary downtime. With a
RYECO Mark Detection System the marks can be detected automatically;
can signal alarms to alert operators of any problems; and can also activate
automatic shutdown procedures. A Mark Detection System helps to closethe-loop on your defect detection and removal program
BENEFITS OF MARK DETECTION
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• By helping close the loop on the defect removal process
automatically
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Saving time; no operator is needed to search for defects
• Locating defects quickly and easily
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Automating the detection process
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
A Mark Detection System is usually a spot sensor or small camera that is specially tuned to see only the color
of the mark that is made upstream. A spot sensor is idea when there is no web wander at the point of detection. A camera can scan or view a window of the web and react to the presence of a mark anywhere in the
viewing area. Special lighting is required for the camera sensor to reliably capture every mark.
The system is only a presence sensor and cannot decode or measure the marks in any way. RYECO offers
camera based detection systems that are capable of seeing a special RYE-DYE for detection on multicolored
or printed backgrounds. For applications that require more control see the RYECO Distortion Monitoring
System and Length Position Control System.
FEATURES OF MARK DETECTION
• Can detect marks at speeds of up to 10,000 fpm
• Fast, 16 millisecond response times for cameras, .5 milliseconds for sensors
• Matched lighting included with each camera system
• Air purged and air cooled housings for low maintenance operation

DISTORTION MONITORING
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
For webs that stretch or shrink during processing, it is impossible to know
in real time the amount of distortion in the web. Roll size, position in the
roll, environmental conditions and tension all affect how much the web can
shrink or stretch during processing. Each stage of converting can impart
additional distortion in a flexible web. The RYECO Distortion Monitoring
System makes it possible to know in real time how much a web stretches
or shrinks during processing.
BENEFITS OF DISTORTION MONITORING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Measuring distortion during processing from one end of the
line to the other or between converting stages
• Controlling stretch in real time as the roll’s diameter changes
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Providing instantaneous stretch and shrinkage information in
a flexible web
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Creating no need for manual measuring
• Automatically knowing when the web is stretched or relaxed
too much and signals alarms
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTIION
The system usually consists of a RYECO Registration Marking System for making the marks and a
RYECO Distortion Monitoring System for detecting the marks. The Registration Marking System places
short marks on the web at set length intervals; for example, a mark might be placed every 5 yards or
meters. The system uses an encoder to accurately place the marks evenly along the web at a point where
the substrate is most stable. At any point downstream or in subsequent converting stages, the spacing
of the marks is checked with a Distortion Monitoring System. Any variations are translated into web
distortion in the form of the percentage of stretch or shrinkage. The values are displayed in real time on
the operator’s screen.
The value of stretch or shrinkage can be sent serially to another process control system. Limits can be
set by an operator to trigger alarms when action needs to be taken. A trend display shows distortion
over time and in the case of multiple lanes the stretch can be displayed as a profile. The marks are
normally placed along the edge of the web where they can be trimmed off.
FEATURES OF DISTORTION MONITORING
• Real Time display of stretch or shrinkage via HMI
• Operates on web speeds from 0-10,000 feet-per-minute
• Accuracy is .01% of operating speed (About .6” at 500 fpm)
• Can detect visible or invisible marks on any color or type of substrate

LENGTH AND
POSITION CONTROL
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
For most continuous web manufacturers, determining the accurate length
for each step of the process can be a real challenge. When a roll of raw
material is converted into finished goods, it is critical to know how much
product there is in each roll that is shipped. It is also important to know
at all times how much product is left on the unwinding roll to ensure
complete sets of finished rolls. Encoder issues, and stretch and shrinkage in
the substrate can cause large inaccuracies in roll length. RYECO offers the
Length and Position Control System that uses evenly spaced code marks
on a web that provides users with 100% accurate length and position
information in any processed roll. The system also provides functionality
for automatic stopping for sets or known defects and can display web
stretch and shrinkage in real time.
BENEFITS OF LENGTH & POSITION CONTROL
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Allowing you to know the finished product’s length
• Customers’ orders never being shorted again
• Accurately stopping at all known defects or product upsets during
unwinding
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Eliminating the need to add extra product just to make sure there
is enough
• Immediately giving insight to control stretch in real time as roll’s
diameter changes
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Keeping operators hands away from dangerous pinch points
CONFIGURATIONS

EDGE CRACK DETECTION
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
Cracks along the edges of a moving web can cause lengthy downtime on
subsequent processes such as a coater, re-winder or re-reeler in a paper mill.
An edge crack or fold-over can hang-up on a slitter knife causing a blow-up
which results in time consuming, costly clean-ups. When the location of
every edge crack in a jumbo roll of paper is known then corrective actions
can be taken by downstream operators to prevent the blow-up. Knowing
when cracks are occurring on the paper machine can also provide Machine
Tenders with valuable information that will help them eliminate the source
of the cracks. A RYECO Edge Crack Detection System will eliminate all
downtime in a paper line caused by edge cracks.
BENEFITS OF EDGE CRACK DETECTION
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Providing information to eliminate edge cracks at their source
• When used with a RYECO Defect Marking System, marking front
and back cracks different colors
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Allowing operator to immediately address edge cracks that are
forming instead of waiting for a winder backlog
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Reducing machine and winder downtime due to undetected edge
cracks
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
A RYECO Edge Crack Detection System utilizes a patented crack detection technology that combines
high speed optics with air to detect even the smallest cracks that are not yet open. As a crack passes
through the ECD’s sensors, a small amount of focused air creates enough of an opening for the angled high
speed optics to detect the crack. The same air closes the crack back up as it leaves the sensor resulting in
no touching or modifying of the crack. The crack opening only has to be 1/16” (1.6 mm) to be detected
by the sensor and must extend in from the edge for a measurement of at least 3/8” (9.5 mm).
The response time of the high speed sensor is 50 microseconds. The sensor can be adjusted so that
only larger cracks are detected. When the sensor is coupled with the RYECO Defect Marking System,
all cracks in a jumbo roll are indicated as a colored ring to the winder or re-reeler operators. Typically,
both edges of a paper machine are monitored for edge cracks and one edge (the edge facing the winder
operator) is marked with a unique color for front and back cracks.
FEATURES OF EDGE CRACK DETECTION
• Can see separated and non-separated edge cracks
• Provides a sensor response time of 50 microseconds for small crack detection at high speeds
• Automatic edge tracking and sheet break retraction are standard
• Sensors can be placed at the midpoint of the machine to narrow down the source of cracks
CONFIGURATIONS
• Dual-Sided Edge Crack Detection System
• Dual-Sided Edge Crack Detection with up to 6 Color Marking

a web’s width changes during processing, it becomes necessary to maintain
the position of a sensor or marker relative to the edge of the moving web.
The RYECO Edge Tracking System will follow the edge and maintain the
position of any device mounted on it.
BENEFITS OF EDGE TRACKING
IMPROVES QUALITY BY...
• Tracking opaque and clear webs
INCREASES EFFICIENCY BY...
• Automatically moving out of the way for threading and startup
CREATES A SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENT BY...
• Eliminating any need to manually adjust the position as the web

The system operates with a tracking sensor and a linear actuator with a 24 VDC stepper motor. There is a
moving carriage on which to mount a sensor, camera, or a ink jet marking head. The linear actuator is available
in heavy duty and low profile light duty. The heavy duty unit can handle loads of up to 50 pounds with a 36”
cantilevered load; the low profile light duty can handle up to 35 pounds with only 12” of a cantilevered load.
Many of RYECO’s signature products offer this tracking system as a standard feature or as an option. The ETS
designation is not used when tracking is offered with other RYECO systems. This offering is a standalone system
and is normally used with non-RYECO sensors or markers. Custom mounting options are available for most
common devices such as Ink Jet printheads.
FEATURES OF EDGE TRACKING
• Maintains a position to within 1/16” (1.6 mm) of the edge
• Provides automatic retraction on sheet break
• Offers a 12” (305 mm), 24” (610) and 48” (1220) stroke stepper motor actuator
• Has AUTO/MANUAL and FORWARD/REVERSE push buttons for operator control
