July 2016 - Ogston Sailing Club
July 2016 (email address: newsletter@ogstonsc.co.uk) www.ogstonsc.co.uk www.facebook.com/ogstonsailingclub https://twitter.com/Ogstonsailing Commodore’s Comments It’s been a busy few weeks at the club since our last edition of the newsletter, with lots going on both on and off the water. Our Adult Learn to Sail Course has come to a close with a new group of enthusiastic sailors graduating with RYA Level 2 qualifications. Congratulations to you all and a big thankyou to Sandy and his team of volunteers for giving up their Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, to provide what is an essential provision within the club. Provision which is only possible because we have a number of well trained and experienced instructors to draw upon; otherwise many of the courses the club hope to provide year on year would prove prohibitively expensive. To that end the club does provide a number of Dinghy Instructor and Assistant Instructor courses. I believe there are still places remaining on this year’s instructor course, so if you have ever contemplated helping out with the adult course or are consid- ering getting more involved in junior fleet, then why not have a chat with Sandy. Our powerboat and sailing courses are RYA national training schemes, which are widely regarded as world leaders. We are only able to offer these by virtue of being a recognised training centre. RYA recognition means our centre has passed the high standards of annual inspection including safety checks. We are teaching to RYA standards, on appropriate equipment and instructor student ratios, and importantly in a safe environment. Ongoing recognition is subject to an annual inspection which this year coincided with the last Friday session of the Learn to Sail Course. I am pleased to say we passed. Thanks to Dave, Sandy and the team on achieving and maintaining these high standards and ensuring our courses deliver excellent training, something as a club we can all be proud of. Junior Fleet is also in full swing. I really am envious of our juniors who are fortunate to have been introduced to our sport at a great age and of the many years of sailing that lay before them. It really is great to hear their laughter and enjoyment reverberating around the foreshore each and every Saturday morning. Complementing our extensive fleet of junior boats this year, two new RS Teras are awaiting collection and will be arriving soon. On the social front, our annual Pig Roast took place on Saturday 19th June and coming up we have the new members evening on July 2nd. Finally I would like to congratulate the winners of the President’s Trophy this year. Befitting of Father’s Day the top three places were all occupied by father and daughter teams. And not forgetting our junior competitors for competing in all four races. Rob Spencer Commodore Getting onto the water VERY IMPORTANT It is a condition of the CLUB’S INSURANCE that anyone using any POWERED BOAT (RETREAT, MOBY, RIBs, DORYs, JAFFA – any inboard or outboard engine) is required to have the 'Safety Familiarisation Course’ as a minimum qualification. Also when a Power Boat is being used as a Safety Boat there must be a minimum of two Safety Officers on board and in charge who have BOTH completed the 'Safety Familiarisation Course’ as a minimum qualification. SO1 should have experience in safety duties. If you do not have experience, please opt for the SO2 role to allow yourself to gain experience. Please help Dave Driffill to compile a register of everyone’s training. He has a form which we ask all members to complete and return it ASAP. If you have not attended the Safety Familiarisation Course please contact Dave Driffill at daved.ff3449@gmail.com . OODs please can you put out a white SOCIAL SAIL SIGN ON SHEET each day and place on the daily results board if anyone social sails. All Sailors I have been asked by several OODs and DO1s to remind sailors that when you SIGN ON can you please PRINT YOUR NAME clearly. Pursuit races please can sailors remember to continue sailing in position at the 1st sound signal until the 2nd sound signal. This is to give the OOD/DO1 time to log your positions. When ashore please remember to SIGN OFF after a race, this tells Safety you are ashore. If a Pursuit race please remember to put who/ what boat and sail number is in front and behind you at the 1st sound signal. You are writing your position at the end of a Pursuit race as a check for the OOD. Can you help in the Bar? I would like to ask members if anyone would be able to help on a rota basis with the bar after sailing on Wednesday evening, Saturday or Sunday afternoons or at club events. Simon and Jess Law are regulars providing the bar at the moment. But I feel a rota with several people would spread this task. Please contact Simon by email slaw8135@gmail.com or Tel: 01246 865173 Sailing It has been good to see Social sailors on the water taking the opportunity to sail whilst racing is taking place. The warm weather recently has made sailing really very pleasurable but with not so good wind. Hopefully we’ll have more favourable sailing conditions. The water level has dropped significantly but there is still plenty of water to sail. Why not come on down to the club and have a sail while the safety cover is on for the racing and stay for a chat in the clubhouse after. When you come down PLEASE SIGN ON printing your name clearly either to Race (blue sheet) or Social Sail (white sheet), if Social sailing please also let the OOD know (via the radio) that you are sailing so they can advise you where the racing will be happening. Also remember to SIGN OFF when you have finished EACH RACE or when your packing up for the day if Social Sailing. If you use a Club Boat can you please fill in a Usage Log with your details and the diary. Donations should be put in a little envelope with your name, date, boat used and amount on it and placed in the blue tin in the corridor. Please can you put the Us- age log in the bulldog clip on the Daily Results Board. If you sail outside of racing please can you fill out a Safety Log, a Social Sail Sign On sheet and Club Boat log and Diary if used. These are all together in the corridor on the Management and Sailing Committee noticeboard, the sheets then need to go onto the Daily Results Board. Sailing Matters. The Sunday Spring Class series has finished with 57 sailors signing on, 15 qualifiers. A results table is later in the newsletter. The 3rd Hoggard race saw 11 boats racing, the overall results are that 40 sailors have signed on to race so far with the results now 1st John Mellors in his Flying Firteen, 2nd Martin Honnor in his Solo, 3rd Phil Hind in his Laser. You still have two more races left 6th July - GH and 3rd August - P. On Saturday 4th June we had the first Novice Race with Dave Driffill as OOD and there were 18 sailors signed on. It was great to see everyone sailing. The wind wasn’t the best for first-timers racing but everyone had a go which is what we wanted. We had 5 adults three from the Learn to Sail and two ladies Sara Martin and Jane Mellors. 13 juniors sailed, some had only started sailing this year. Very well done to you all for coming to race. On Saturday 18th June we had the second Novice Race and there were 4 adults, 5 DYS Juniors and 7 Junior sailors signed on. This time we had 3 starts Adults, DYS Juniors and Juniors. We had a briefing before the race at 12 noon. Everyone signed on then after the briefing everyone launched, the Lead Boat showed the way around the course and the instructors on the water made sure everyone enjoyed their sail. Dave Wood was OOD. The course was around 4 buoys and everyone did at least 1 lap. You all did really well, see you on the 2nd July for the third Novice Race. Please come and have a go, we will help you as much as we can. We will have a briefing before each novice race to explain things about the race and for you to ask questions also. You still have 2nd July – also the New Members Sail and Social, 16th July, 23rd July, Novice Races left of the First series. On Sunday 5th June we had the Laser and Solo Open, we had 11 visiting Lasers and 11 club sailors and there were 12 club Solo sailors. Ogston’s first three Laser’s were Gary Knott was 4th , Steve Ball was 8th and Rob Spencer 9th, Lee Howard was 1st Junior sailing a Laser 4.7. With no visiting Solos 1st Martin Honnor, 2nd Jon Ward, 3rd Peter Tyers. Well done to everyone as it wasn’t the best sailing conditions. Reports to follow later in the newsletter. Over the weekend of the 11th and 12th June we had the Flying Fifteen Open alongside normal club racing. We had 6 visitors and 2 club boats who had 5 races and needed to sail 4 to qualify. Simon Law was OOD who had Jess Law, Andy Knighton and Alison Molloy helping him in Retreat. The wind was very fickle being SE to SW 23 on Saturday and E to S 3-4 on Sunday. Overall winners Jon and Julia Ward and 6th was Dave Driffill and Gus Hurring. th On Sunday 19 June, we had the third Premier Event of the year, the President’s Trophy, which was a one day event with 4 races 3 to count this year in response to the member survey. There were 21 main fleet boats and 3 Junior boats signed on to sail and the weather was mild and fine until the rain came during the 4th race. The wind was light and variable. The President’s Trophies were won by Simon and Jess Law, 2nd was Martin and Abigail Honnor, and 3rd was Andy and Sarah Gomm. All father and daughter teams, quite fitting for Father’s Day. The Jackie Degg Trophy for 1st Lady went to Jess Law, John Swain sailing his Laser was awarded the title of most improved sailor during the event. The Junior President’s Trophy and medals went to 1st Lee Howard, 2nd Kieran Goodliffe and 3rd James Goodliffe. Junior sailor James Barnsdale in a Opti Bat came to race for the first time in normal club racing but the conditions overwhelmed him, better luck next time James. Well done to all who sailed. Forthcoming Events. Please note that boats need to be sailed to their Class Rules and that there is NO SOCIAL SAILING on either Opens or Premier events. We are interested and the sailing committee has certain trophies to allocate at the end of the year pertaining to competition away from the club. Eddie Pope has been on his travels again this time to Winsford Flash were he regained his confidence by winning in quite blustery conditions in a fleet of 17 boats. He also went to the Baltic Wharf SC open, which takes place in the floating harbour in central Bristol. It included a long distance race past SS Great Britain, a 1.5 mile beat followed by a 1.5 mile run then a couple of short laps near the club, he was 2nd overall. THIS WAS PERHAPS THE RACE WHERE GOING THE RIGHT WAY REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE AND THE BOATS WHICH KEPT RIGHT ON THE FIRST LEG WERE IN GOOD SHAPE AT THE WINDWARD MARK . PETE TYERS READ THE WINDS BETTER THAN ANYONE AND HELD ON TO THE LEAD UNTIL THE END OF THE LONG RUN ON THE FINAL LAP WHEN, DESPITE LOUD ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE 3RD PLACED BOAT - I WONDER WHO ? - WAS PASSED BY MARTIN HONNOR, WHO THEREFORE COUNTED 2 FIRSTS AND WON THE EVENT. 2ND WAS PETE TYERS, FOLLOWED BY JON WARD, KEITH STONE AND NICK PATRICK . THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT AND ENJOYABLE MEETING, ABLY RUN BY JULIA AND DEMONSTRATED THE STRENGTH AND COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THE OGSTON SOLO FLEET . Please come down to the club to sail in the afternoon and have ‘food’ later whilst meeting other members. There will be the Novice Race, starting at 12.30pm and either social or racing sailing during the afternoon. Some members who are at the club during the morning bring lunch to eat before the Racing that starts at 2.00pm and 4.00pm. The ‘food’ options are an early BBQ meal after sailing and or a meal later at 8.00pm, both meals are £5.00/person and special diets can be catered for. With light winds the first race was underway on a superb long course, with Ogston sailors moving up and down the field with James Daniels finishing 2nd and Tom Cashin 5th. After lunch the sailors took to the water for the following back to back races. The sun shone but the winds ranged from light to nothing! James Daniels had another fantastic battle in his laser 1 with Will Gold from Carsington, sailing a Super Nova, with James sailing past the line in 1 st place. The third and final race got underway with the winds dropping even more, if that was possible, with sailors searching for wind which came and went across the res. Of note James finished 2 nd and Tom, the third topper in. The results were posted but following a recount James Daniels was awarded silver in the senior class, Tom Cashin bronze in the intermediate class and Ben Knott, gold in the junior class. Another very successful day for Ogston Youth. Senior Class Intermediate Class James Daniels – Laser 1 Tom Cashin – Topper Ruby Tomlinson - Topper Jake Simms – Topper Birtie West – Topper Junior Class Ben Knott - Topper Freya Walker – Topper Topaz Laser Open June 5th 2016 22 Lasers from 10 different clubs competed for this year’s Ogston Laser Open Trophy. The winds were light and fickle making course setting as well as the sailing difficult. For the first race The Solos started first with the Lasers starting 5 minutes later. Ian Jones from Dovestone SC , looking to win the trophy for the 10th time, led the fleet from the Windward Mark closely followed by Paul Williamson from Staunton Harold SC. These two pulled away from the rest of the fleet to eventually finish 1 and 2. Garry Knott from Ogston worked his way up to third but was not able to catch Ian and Paul. Charlotte Greenhalgh of Leigh and Lowton SC moved through the fleet to finish fourth. The second and third races were sailed back to back and the wind continued to be difficult varying from 0 to 10knts and shifting between North East and South East. In race 2 Ian Jones again led the fleet closely followed by Garry and Paul. By the finish Joe Scurral of Carsington SC managed to overhaul Paul to finish in third place. Charlotte was down in 7th. In the last race it was Charlotte’s turn to lead the fleet round the course and was able to hold off both Ian and Paul who stuck to her transom for the whole race. Joe Scurral finished 4th with Garry finishing in 6th. So once again Ian Jones took the Ogston Laser Open Trophy. For the 10th time in 10 appearances. The Ogston Laser sailors did get a chance to look at the trophy be- fore it was whisked away and we did see one Ogston name on there with Matt Rawson winning the trophy in 2009. Paul Goodison the Laser Olympic Gold Medallist also appears having won the trophy in 1995,1996 and 1999. Results I have some photos of the event taken by Kent and Myself which hopefully will go up on the website and on the notice board if you are interested. 1st Radial Phil Deeley Congratulations to Harvey Martin for borrowing his Dads boat while Dad was on safety duty at our open and finishing 3rd overall in the Aero nationals. 1st Junior Radial Jenni Parsons Rotherham SC Rank 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 16th 17th 18th 19th 20th 21st 22nd Fleet Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Junior Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Main Junior SailNo 207787 207732 201941 210096 208125 208470 166 144272 204483 25643 18095 198880 207983 203581 89270 201354 14 118156 118303 1 16991 4 1st Ian Jones Dovestone SC 2nd Paul Williamson Staunton Harold SC 3rd Charlotte Greenhalgh Leigh and Lowton SC 4th Garry Knott Ogston SC Midland SC 1st Junior Standard Rig George Graham Burwain SC 1st Junior 4.7 Lee Howard Ogston SC Club HelmName Dovestone Ian Jones Staunton Harrold Paul Williamson Leigh & Lowton Charlotte Greenhalgh Ogston Garry Knott Carsington Joe Scurral Leigh & Lowton Mark Lunn Ogston Graham MacWhirter Ogston Steve Ball Ogston Rob Spencer Burwain SC Paul Graham Burwain SC George Graham Ogston Adam Hague Trent Valley Ben Richardson Ogston Chris Walsh Ogston Mike Heap Midland Phil Deeley Ogston Phil Hind Rotherham SC Jenni Parsons Ogston Rob Hunter Ogston John Swain Ogston Stuart Gasgoyne Ogston Lee Howard Nett 2 4 5 5 7 10 13 14 16 16 19 22 24 24 28 32 33 34 34 37 39 43 President’s Trophy 2016 Junior Fleet Rank 1st 2nd 3rd Class Topper Comet Topper SailNo 42443 583 33018 HelmName Lee Howard K Goodliffe J Goodliffe CrewName Nett 4 5 6 Main Fleet Rank Class 1st Albacore 2nd Enterprise 3rd Enterprise 4th Enterprise 5th Solo 6th Flying Fifteen Cl. 7th K1 8th Laser 9th Laser 10th Laser 11th Enterprise 12th Enterprise 13th Byte C11 14th Solo 15th Laser 16th Solo 17th Laser 18th Laser 19th Solo 20th Laser 21st Laser 22nd Enterprise SailNo HelmName CrewName 8135 Simon Law Jess Law 22619 Martin Honnor Abigail Honnor 22418 Andy Gomm Sarah Gomm 223219 Russel Short Alistair Joyce 5006 Martin Bradley 2736 Rod Shires Dave Marshall 53 Don Spencer 198880 Adam Hague 204883 Rory McKenzie 89270 Mike Heap 29229 K McKenzie C McKenzie 228080 Chris Bridge 3589 David Hammond 5015 Dave Basford 204883 Callum McKenzie 5501 Nick Patrick 14 Phil Hind 123521 Sean Goodliffe 4938 Paula Tyers 1 John Swain 118303 Rob Hunter 230036 Bryce Howard Lotty Howard Ogston SC Solo Open 2016 Rank 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th SailNo 57 5534 5571 5078 5015 5501 4433 4938 5565 5325 5081 4834 Club HelmName Ogston Martin Honnor Ogston Jon Ward Ogston Peter Tyers Ogston Keith Stone Ogston Dave Basford Ogston Nick Patrick Ogston Michael Usherwood Ogston Paula Tyers Ogston Colin Coombs Ogston Jonathan Chapman Ogston John Mann Ogston Bryce Howard Nett 2 3 5 8 9 11 12 13 14 17 22 22 Nett 4 6 9 11 13 20 22 27 30 30 30 31 31 34 35 37 41 46 47 50 52.5 53 FLYING FIFTEEN 3447-THE FFAT CONTROLLER OVINGTON TYPE 9 "SMOOTHIE" GRP HULL, WITH WOODEN DECKING BY DOBSON. Sandy Dowell Training Officer Sailability I hope you all enjoyed the letters in the newsletter from Mark, Jono and Callum last month. I really thought Ogston Members were a bit more helpful than the response I had from the newsletter. Thank you to Simon Law who offered to help out on the odd Saturday; His was the only response we had. Like we said in the newsletter piece, all we are asking is for you to offer to help on a Saturday or Sunday to be a buddy. It’s not every Saturday or Sunday. What we are trying to do is get together a list of names so if Mark, Jono or Callum need a buddy we can get in touch with you. I put a great amount of time in at Ogston doing jobs around the place, Tuesday club, Rear Commodore Safety and two committee meetings a month. So I would really appreciate help from as many members as possible. Just email me or talk to me when you see me at the club. Anybody can buddy. We will tell you what they need for you to do, so helms or crews we don’t mind.
