VERMONT’S TRUE SEASON
As the daylight hours shorten and the weather gets colder,
Vermont begins to enter its true season of winter. While the
official calendar date of winter may be a couple of weeks
away, the signs will certainly appear.
While some may long for the warm summer days of past, it is
important to embrace this time of year. I will be the first to
admit, it certainly is not easy. Coming from my last few winters in Los Angeles, where the average winter temperature
was 50 degrees, the Vermont winter was a harsh transition.
During my first winter, I was knee deep in classes, work, and
questioning if Vermont was the place for me. While I could
have easily holed myself in my room till winter was over,
(which these days is not till May) I found a way to embrace
the bitter cold and dark nights.
I am grateful for my classmates, who decided to expose me

COUNTY AREA RESIDENT BEN, BY RILEY ST. CLAIR
Hello AFH: Meet Ben!
Ben is from the Salt Lake
City area in Utah. He attended Utah State University,
where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry.
After college, he moved out
here to Vermont to attend
UVM’s medical school. He
has come to love New England as well as the Fort, and
has lived here for the last
three years.
In his free time, Ben loves
playing soccer and fishing.
He also likes to play the
djembe drum and write music. He is an avid hiker and
photographer, where he enjoys the beautiful scenery of
Vermont!
If you see him around the
fort, be sure to say hello!
Ben is now a fourth year
medical student and will be
applying to residency programs next fall!
COUNTY AREA RESIDENT ALYSSA, BY MICHAEL DRUKER
Hi there, AFH! I want to introduce you to one of the wonderful residents in Area 1 who
has moved in this past semester. Her name is Alyssa and
she has been making University Lane an even better place
to live for the past couple
months. When I first met Alyssa, she was still moving in to
her new apartment. I could
relate to the feelings associated with being in a new place
and a new school since I had
just done the same a year
before.
Alyssa comes to us from New
York City and has shared with
me in the past about the drastic change Vermont life can be
at first and says her favorite
parts about New York life
were the good food and Central Park in Manhattan. She is
also studying hard at the medical school here and is enjoying herself so far. I asked her
what motivates her to do that
work and she told me, “It's a
unique combination of getting
to learn how things work and
being able to help people directly with that knowledge.” It
sounds like she’s well on her
way to being a great health
care professional.
We extend a heart welcome to
you, Alyssa! Make sure to say
hello to Alyssa when you see
her around the neighborhood!
