GQ ANSWERS
Stitching Modes Explained…
Variable: The ability to maintain control of stitch
length by both, the speed you move the fabric
and the speed you run the machine by use of the
foot control. The further you push the foot
control the greater the increase in needle speed.
Constant: The ability to maintain control of
stitch length only through your movement of the
fabric. The machine stitches at the same speed
you set. Pressing the foot control only results in
one consistent speed.
Basting: The ability to take long stitches to
temporarily hold the layers of the quilt together
for stabilizing. This allows you to quickly secure
an area so you are on to quilting in no time. You
can set the speed at which the machine
intermittently takes a stitch to give you more
time to move the fabric a greater distance
between stitches.

GQ ANSWERS
Thinking FREE-MOTION QUILTING is for YOU? Here are some areas to
keep in mind:
9
Can you handle quilts the size you are wanting to quilt? A longarm
throat won’t have trouble handling the quilt bulk, but you might.
Remember to RELAX, free-motion quilting puts extra stress on the
neck, shoulders and back.
9
Are you wanting to do lots of thread play, thread painting and trying
all sorts of new techniques? Is ART QUILTING your passion? Artists
tend to prefer the versatility and hands on offered by a free-motion
quilting system.
9
Is VERSATILITY important to you? A free-motion quilting system lets
you quilt, baste, bind, piece and take on lots of creative projects a
domestic sewing machine would struggle with.
9
Are you ready to PRACTICE? Free-motion quilting takes time to learn.
While the learning experience is part of the fun, remember to set
aside a little time each day to practice and build up endurance. It
takes the average person 6-9 months to get confident with their
quilting.
Page 15
CHAPTER 3:
Hand-Guided Quilting
Hand-Guided Quilting: The art of
moving a quilting machine head to
quilt. Hand-guided quilters enjoy an
open view of the entire quilting row.
Often preferred due to the similarity
to drawing while the frame holds the
quilt securely while quilting.
Page 16
HAND-GUIDED QUILTING: Hand-guided
quilting refers to hand guiding the quilting
head to quilt while the quilt is secured in a
frame.
• A favorite among custom quilters
• Offers assistance supporting the
quilt in a frame for more accurate
quilting
• Allows the quilter to view a large
portion of the quilt at a time
• Requires endurance to stand and
quilt
• Moving the head offers a familiar
drawing like motion for quilting
• Micro and fill work can be
completed quickly with great
accuracy
• The versatility an extended throat
plate opens up many technique
and design options
Page 17
GQ ANSWERS
Size Matters
18” – 22”: These throat sizes are great for those who like
to work in a focused area and don’t mind rolling. The limited
throat space makes picking pantograph patterns that fit into
your quilting space important. The quilting space for an 18”
is 14” and the quilting space for a 22” is 17”.
26” – 30”: These throat sizes offer the most versatility and
range. Your quilt area is considerably larger allowing you to
quilt faster with less rolling making them perfect for custom
or pantograph quilting. The quilting space for a 26” is 21”
and the quilting space for a 30” is 27”.
What size do
YOU want?

Space Matters

Recommended Space:
8’ x 14’
12’ Stand
Recommended Space:
8’ x 16’
These the very minimum space
requirements allowing you to quilt
from the front or the back (not both)
of the stand and provide rolling access
at one end. We recommend you add
an additional two feet to each
dimension for comfort.

Stitching Modes
Stitch Regulation: The ability of the machine to control
your stitch length. This takes all the stress and worry off of
you to get those perfect stitches. Set the stitch length and
let the machine do the work for you. This also shortens the
learning curve by removing the need to learn to control
stitch length.
Coast Regulate: The ability of the machine to control your
stitch length during faster movement, but when doing fine
detailed work where smaller stitches are needed, the
machine automatically switches to an unregulated mode to
let you do your micro work. This means you don’t have to
stop and change settings to do fill work.
Constant: The ability to maintain control over stitch length
on your own. The machine stitches at a regular speed that
you set so your movement of the head controls your stitch
length. This is an unregulated mode so you have complete
control over stitch length.
Basting: The ability to take long stitches to temporarily hold
the layers of the quilt together for stabilizing. This allows you
to quickly secure an area so you are on to quilting or even
stabilize an entire quilt in no time.
