Mount St. Mary`s - Northeast Conference
Mount St. Mary’s
NEC Predicted Finish: 1st
Mountaineers
2007-08 Record: 19-15, 11-7 NEC
Talk about a turnaround. Sporting a 10-13 record heading
into the home stretch last season, the Mount began to clamp
down on the defensive end of the floor at the same time the
team began to take advantage of transition opportunities.
In compiling a 9-1 record from February 7th to the team’s
NCAA win over Coppin State on March 18th, Mount St.
Mary’s averaged 75.0 ppg, allowed 64.4 ppg and shot 48.2
percent from the field. Prior to the hot stretch, the Mount
had averaged 66.5 ppg, permitted 67.1 ppg and converted
just 42.8 percent of its attempts from the floor.
Following the program’s first NEC championship since 1999, the best may
be yet to come for Mount St. Mary’s. After a 6-6 start against conference
opposition, the installation of an up-tempo attack proved to be the catalyst
for the Mount, which won five of its last six league outings to enter the postseason with momentum, then completed a Cinderella run as the #4 seed with double
digit wins over Quinnipiac, regular season champion Robert Morris and Sacred
Heart, the latter two coming on the road. With fifth year head coach Milan Brown
pushing all the right buttons, Mount St. Mary’s capped its year with the first NCAA
win in school history, a 69-60 triumph over Coppin State, before entering the national
spotlight with a matchup at top-ranked North Carolina.
Fast forward six months and the focus has now shifted to delivering another NEC title
back to Emmitsburg, a goal well within reach considering the team’s commitment to defense and the proven firepower returning in 2008-09.
Jeremy Goode
One of the most scintillating players in the conference, Goode took his game to
another level last season when he led the Mountaineers to their first NEC title since
1999. The jet-quick point guard led the NEC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.65:1),
and finished third in assists (5.5), fourth in steals (2.0) and ninth in scoring (14.5).
Possessing the ability to control the tempo of the game, beat pressure and excel as a
decision-maker, Goode has an opportunity to become one of the top playmakers in
league annals. With 337 assists after two seasons, the Charlotte, NC native leads
all active NEC players in the category and has already cracked the top-50 in career
helpers. If Goode maintains the pace he has set over his first two years, he could
end his career as the second-leading distributor in conference history.

Brown’s franchise performer is junior point guard Jeremy Goode, a 5’9” blur with the ball.
Having been handed the keys to an up-and-coming team as a freshman, Goode matured into
his role last season as the team’s undisputed floor leader. With an improving jump shot and a
proven ability to control the tempo of the game on both ends of the floor, the Charlotte, NC
product put up some dazzling numbers, averaging a team-high 14.5 ppg, to go along with 5.5
apg (third in the NEC), 2.0 spg (fourth) and a league-leading 178 made free throws. Despite the
departure of backcourt partner and three-point ace Chris Vann, the Mount will still be able to
spread the floor with the return of 6’4” wing player Will Holland, 6’3” guard Jean Cajou and 6’5”
forward Kelly Beidler, the latter two providing a key spark off the bench during the team’s
tourney run. An inside-outside threat, Holland ranked third on the team with 8.6 ppg a year ago
and drained 56 three-point shots. Cajou got off to a slow start after sitting out 2006-07, but
made great strides in the second half of the season and raised his game in the playoffs when he
was named NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 16.0 ppg and 3.7 rpg. A solid
on-the-ball defender, Cajou connected at a 46.4 percent rate from three-point land and ended
the year averaging 7.1 ppg, including 15.9 ppg over the last eight games of the campaign.
Beidler is a nightmare matchup for opponents with the strength to play down on the block,
the speed to attack the basket and the shooting ability to be an effective perimeter marksman. Like Cajou, he came on strong down the stretch and scored 15 points in a reserve role
in each of the Mount’s three NEC Tournament games.
With nine players measuring 6’5” or taller, the Mount may sport the biggest and deepest
frontcourt in the conference, led by 6’7” seniors Sam Atupem and Marcus Mitchell. A
starter from the onset of his career, Atupem is a nimble and effective post player with
range out to 15 feet. He has hit over 50 percent of his shots from the floor in each of
his three seasons. Atupem averaged 7.7 ppg, 4.6 rpg and ranked second in the NEC
with 49 blocks in 2007-08. Mitchell is a career 53.7 percent shooter from the field
and is one of the top passing big men. As a junior, he averaged 5.4 ppg and a teamhigh 5.9 rpg. The third member of the Mount’s elite bench core last season was
6’7” Shawn Atupem, a wiry version of older brother Sam. The younger Atupem
(4.2 ppg) has great upside to his game and is a springy, athletic small forward
who excels in the open court.
Providing depth up front will be sophomore Tayvon Jackson, along with
redshirt freshmen Danny Thompson and John Schwarz, all of whom
measure 6’7”. Brown added just two newcomers to his lineup in
the offseason, 5’10” point guard Lamar Trice and 6’7” forward
Jacolby Wells. With an ability to pressure the ball defensively,
the ultra-quick Trice will enable Brown to spell Goode.
Last year, Trice led Philadelphia’s Imhotep Charter to
the Pennsylvania State semifinals and averaged 8.0
apg. A top-flight athlete,Wells averaged 15.0
ppg, 9.0 rpg and 5.0 bpg as a senior at
Greensville County High School
in Virginia.

Five Questions With: Markus Mitchell
1. Let's go back to last March. Describe your feelings as the clocked ticked down and the celebration was
about to begin for winning the NEC title?
As the clock ticked down, a lot of things ran through my mind. The first was that all the hard work we had put in had paid off.
Honestly I did not know how to react at first, it's one of those moments you see on television that looks so amazing, but when
it was my turn to actually take place in the celebration, I just stood still for a couple of seconds in disbelief not knowing what to
do. After that was over I saw all my teammates in the middle of the court jumping around, so I went and joined them. Our
coaches told us the night before that the feeling would be indescribable if we won, and at that moment that's actually how I felt.
2. What did winning the NEC championship mean to Mount St. Mary's University? What was the reaction
around campus and in the community?
Being a small school we have a great sense of pride and everyone here supports us. To be able to bring a championship back to school meant a lot to everyone here.
At the time we were all going through the loss of one of our classmates here at school, so when we won, it helped to bring everyone's spirits up. Around campus and
the community everyone let us know that they were very proud of us and were happy that we could all embrace in this together.
3. Was the NCAA experience everything you dreamed it would be? What were some of the highlights both in Dayton for your win over Coppin
State, and in Raleigh for the matchup against top-ranked North Carolina?
Playing in the NCAA tournament was everything I dreamed and more. Each year only 65 teams are privileged to make it to the tournament and to be one of those
teams is an honor. Playing Coppin State in Dayton was a great experience in itself. Two moments that really stood out that night were when my teammate Chris Vann,
a senior, was able to score his 1,000th point and my teammate Shawn Atupem caught a putback dunk off the rim that happened to make SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays.
4. With so many key players returning, expectations are running high for the program this year. What has Coach Brown done to make sure the
team remains focused and can handle the pressure that goes along with being one of the league favorites?
After last season, we took our usual time off to get everyone's bodies healthy again and we immediately went back to work. Being picked as the favorite is what you work
for, but it also means you must work even harder to stay there. This year we look forward to the opportunities we have in front of us and just take it day by day. Coach
Brown always tells us that March will always be there, but why would you want to rush to get there when you have a whole season in front of you. The only pressure we
have on ourselves right now is to go to practice every day and work as hard as we can while we are in there. Everything else will take care of itself in the long run.
5. Now entering your senior year, what do you envision your role being this coming season? Also, what has it been like playing
alongside Jeremy Goode, who has developed into one of the NEC's premier guards?
Being a senior, my role for this upcoming season is to try and lead my team the best way I can on and off the court. Having already graduated, I want my teammates
to look at that as motivation, that if I can do it they can do it to. On the court, I plan on scoring a little more to try and take the pressure off of my teammates. I just
try to do a little bit of everything to help my team win, score, rebound, pass, play defense, do whatever it takes for us to be successful. Playing alongside Jeremy Goode
has been a great experience. Over the past two years he has definitely turned into one of the NEC's premier guards and I think you can put him up there with the
best guards in the nation. He is very talented and he has a motor that keeps on going. On the court, he is our sparkplug, and when he's pushing the ball full speed he
is a very dangerous player and the rest of us feed off his energy.

Mount St. Mary’s
Mount St. Mary’s always plays one of the most demanding
schedules in the NEC and this year is no different. The
Mount will take on three teams that qualified for the 2008
NCAA Tournament (George Mason, American and Georgetown) and one that reached the Postseason NIT (Virginia
Tech). The Mountaineers will also travel to Penn State (Big
Ten) and La Salle (Atlantic 10), as well as renew their rivalry with Loyola (MD) in their season opener on November 14th in Baltimore.

One of the key factors in the Mount’s late season turnaround
and subsequent run to the NEC title was Cajou’s pinpoint
shooting and emergence as one of the league’s top sixth men.
Over the last eight games of his freshman campaign, the
Fairfax, VA product averaged 15.9 ppg and shot 56.1 percent from the field, as well as a remarkable 57.6 percent
(19-33) from three-point range. He was named MVP of the
NEC Tournament after contributing 16.0 ppg, including 15
in the championship game.

Mount St. Mary’s won NEC titles and advanced to the NCAA
Tournament in both 1995 and 1999 under legendary coach
Jim Phelan. In 1999, the Mount became the lowest seeded
team (#6) to win the conference tournament - a record that
still stands - and was the only team in league history to win
the NEC championship without having both a winning overall and conference record prior to entering the postseason.
