Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D.
Dominates NY Plastic Surgery
There are many reasons when people think of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery,
that Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D. comes to mind.
Dr. Greenberg is well
known for his expertise in
the field of cosmetic plastic
surgery and is frequently
interviewed for his
knowledge on the latest
cosmetic surgery
techniques. He has appeared on CBS, Fox
News, NBC and News 12 Long Island and
has been featured in many magazines such
as Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, More,
and Elle, as well as in The New York Times
and Newsday. Dr. Greenberg hosts the only
New York Cosmetic Surgery Radio Show,
NIP/TUCK, every Saturday evening at 10 PM
on 98.5 FM (KJOY). Dr. Greenberg is often a
featured speaker for womens groups, spas,
health and skin care institutes. It is not a
coincidence that he was voted Best Plastic
Surgeon (Long Island Press) for the past five
years. His book (A Little Nip, A Little Tuck)
serves as a guide to cosmetic surgery and his
anti-aging skin care product line (Cosmetic
Surgeon in a JarTM) is the latest and most
effective way to fight the signs of aging.
Dr. Greenberg’s talent is unique and he is
admired not just for his use of the latest and
most advanced procedures, but for his true
appreciation for addressing the overall
health of his patients. Dr. Greenberg is more
than a leader in his field, he is truly
committed to working with his patients on
the importance of overall health, diet,
exercise and maintaining a positive state of
mind. “Regardless of whether you are a
television celebrity or a soccer mom, the
attention that you receive and the perfection
you can expect is incomparable,” said Dr.
Greenberg.
There are several new and amazing
technologies recently introduced into
the offices of Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg
that are sure to deliver excellent results
to anyone looking to enhance their
appearance. Dr. Greenberg is uniquely
positioned to offer the latest,
revolutionary technology that reduces
fat and eliminates inches from your
body without surgery. ZeronaTM is
applied externally, and using laser
technology, the fat just seems to melt
away. In addition to the exciting
ZeronaTM technology, the recent
introduction of the Portrait 3D Imaging
system, for those patients considering
breast augmentation, is breakthrough
technology that enables women to see
what they will look like after breast
augmentation surgery. This allows

use of the latest and most
advanced procedures, but for his

women to actually see the expected
result in advance of any surgical
procedure.
According to Dr. Greenberg, the most
effective way in helping patients see the
best results is customizing a “package”
to meet each individual’s needs. Several
packages have been developed to meet
the needs of most people.
• Ultimate Breasts includes breast
augmentation and/or breast lift.
• About Face is the appropriate
combination of facelift, eyelid lift,
rhinoplasty, chin reshaping and more.
• The Mommy Make Over package
provides the right combination of
tummy tuck, liposuction, breast lift or
implants to transform you from a
“new mom” to a “hot mom.”
• The Liquid Facelift requires just 20
minutes to erase wrinkles with
injectables, such as Restylane®,
Botox®Cosmetic and Juvéderm®.
As Dr. Greenberg continues to help
people look younger and feel better, he
has recently developed and launched a
line of Anti-Aging Skin Care products,
Cosmetic Surgeon in a JarTM. His
product line can supplement treatments
in the office, or can be used as at home
regimen to help reduce the signs of
aging. These products are specifically
designed to reverse sun damage,
enhance elasticity and dramatically
improve your appearance. Cosmetic
Surgeon in A JarTM products are
available at his offices in both
Woodbury and Manhattan and on-line
at www.CosmeticSurgeonInAJar.com.
Take advantage of the latest
technology in Dr. Greenberg’s office for
both surgical and non-surgical
procedures and unveil a beautiful new
body. Whichever procedure, or
combination of procedures that you
choose, you can enhance your
appearance and feel confident that you
have selected one of the experts in the
field, one who will deliver the results
that you seek. There is no better time
than now to consider that cosmetic
surgery procedure that can make you
look younger, feel better and regain that
self confidence!
Dr. Greenberg offers complimentary
consultations at both his Woodbury and
Park Avenue offices. To schedule an
appointment, you can call

Women and their Cars
Love doctors have spent countless hours calculating the length of the honeymoon stage,
which is somewhere between 24 hours and
seven years. But what’s the average honeymoon period with your car? LeaseTrader.com,
which helps people trade their car lease to
someone else, created a survey to find the
answer this question. It turns out that the
average honeymoon period for men is four
months and women 14 months.

How long have you lived on Long Island?
Long Island has been my home for 50 years. I grew up in
New Hyde Park, went through the Herricks school system,
and I now live in Westbury. I enjoy kayaking, swimming,
hiking and the many opportunities available here to
embrace nature. I also enjoy the museums, local theaters,
and diverse concert venues.
Your business is celebrating an important anniversary
this year.
I started The Cuttin' Club, a full service hair salon in
Williston Park, 25 years ago. I purchased it from the previous owner, for whom I had worked for 10 years.
What’s your secret to success?
Having a strong and dependable staff is important. I also
try to stay on top of the many product lines and current
styles. We have a friendly environment and very strong
ties to the community. One of the great pleasures of longterm business ownership has been to grow along with my
clients. I recently completed a major renovation to the
salon and am planning a grand reopening in early
September.
How has the beauty business changed over the years?
Hair color has become much more multi-dimensional,
and perms have been replaced by flat irons. There are also
many more working women now, and this has lead to
styles that are easier to maintain. Plus, we’ve had to extend
our business hours to accommodate our customers’ busy
schedules.
What advice do you have for other women entrepreneurs?
First, do something you love. Going into business is a full
time commitment, and it can be very draining, so be sure
you have a strong support system. Be sure to find some
balance; all work and no play isn’t healthy. But there is also
a great deal of joy and satisfaction when you take the leap!
Men knew the honeymoon period was
over when the following behaviors
occurred:
• Parks around other cars
• Starts transporting sports equipment
• Less frequent car cleaning
• High monthly payment starts to bother them
• Stops using gas mileage button
• No more fights over who drives during long
trips
For women, the behaviors were completely different:
• Lets spouse finally drive car
• Starts car-pooling other kids
• Started eating in car
• Puts makeup on while driving
• Leaves clothes in car
• Starts smoking in car

ELLEN MEISTER, author of Secret Confessions of the
Applewood PTA and The Smart One:
If a novel about a guy who talks to dogs sounds too whimsical for your taste, consider this: former David Letterman
Show writer Merrill Markoe, the creator of Stupid Pet Tricks,
goes beyond clever punchlines in this wise and witty book.
Sure it's bitingly funny (or whatever other dog-inspired pun
jangles your leash), but Nose Down, Eyes Up is also a slyly perceptive exploration of love, commitment and family. Markoe's
first person male narrator, Gil, is a 47-year-old case of arrested development,
more dedicated to his four dogs than his long suffering New Age girlfriend,
Sara. When he stumbles upon his alpha pooch, Jimmy, instructing the other
dogs on the art of manipulating humans, Gil discovers he has the ability to
understand exactly what the animals are saying. The conversations lead to a
journey of self-discovery for both Gil and Jimmy, punctuated by crackling dialogue, hilarious perceptions of the world through a dog's eye-view, and a series
of inevitable missteps by Gil, including a torrid affair with his hypersexual exwife. Nose Down, Eyes Up is a funny book with enough meat for even the most
serious reader, but dog lovers especially will devour it. For the beach, the bungalow, the backyard or even the 5:41 out of Penn Station, this one will make

CAROL HOENIG, author of Without Grace:
It’s difficult not to salivate when reading The Hundred-Foot
Journey by Richard C. Morais, a novel that evokes the indigenous aromas of a humble Mumbai restaurant to the bouquet
of a highly-acclaimed Paris restaurant. The protagonist,
Hassan Haji, eventually and unwittingly stirs the ire of
Madame Mallory, a famous French chef who fiercely seeks
those enviable Michelin stars. Imagine Mallory’s bitter dismay,
though, when she discovers that Haji, a young boy who is
cooking in his father’s classless Indian bistro across the street from her own
refined restaurant, has a talent that surpasses her own. Accurately described as
Slumdog Millionaire meets Chocolat, The Hundred-Foot Journey fills the senses
with exotic settings and mouth-watering recipes while Haji and his family travel
across Europe after a tragedy occurs in his home in Mumbai and end up far from
their homeland in a remote village that is under the thumb of one powerful,
feisty chef—or at least it was before Mallory meets her culinary match and then
some. Humorous and delightful, you’ll not only enjoy this book, you’ll savor it.
BRENDA JANOWITZ, author of Scot on the Rocks and Jack
With a Twist:
The One That I Want by Allison Winn Scotch asks the

Tilly Farmer thinks that she has it all: great family, great

VIVIAN SWIFT, author of When Wanderers Cease
to Roam:
I’ll follow Elizabeth Gilbert anywhere. Like millions
of readers around the world, I followed her to Italy,
India, and Indonesia in the pages of her book Eat,
Pray, Love. This time, in Committed: A Skeptic Makes
Peace With Marriage, I’m following her from, well,
skepticism (the book starts in the holding pen of
Homeland Security in the Dallas-Fort Worth airport) to
eventual and contented reconciliation (in New Jersey. Yes: New Jersey). Both
books are, on the surface, travel stories; and Elizabeth Gilbert is the kind of travel writer whose humor, narrative skill, insights, and juicy digressions make the
journey worthwhile no matter where she goes. In Committed she travels
through a survey of marriage customs and philosophies from around the world
with a quirky Brazilian fiancé and her own treasure-trove of doubts, personal
insecurities, and emotional candor. Trust me: it’s a trip you’ll want to take. Even
though it ends in New Jersey.
SARALEE ROSENBERG, author of four novels,
including Dear Neighbor, Drop Dead:
Just as low fat ice cream can make one pine for the
sweet, rich taste of Breyer’s, so too does sampling the
“lite” variety of a beloved author. In The Three
Weissmans of Westport by Cathleen Schine, readers
will recognize the themes and characterizations of
Jane Austin’s Sense and Sensibility and wish that they
were enjoying the sumptuous original rather than a
bland, “inspired by” rendition. But even if the parallels were better obscured,
one is left with a story that squanders its great potential. Joseph Weissmann, a
wealthy, wavering husband, forces Betty, his dutiful wife of nearly forty years,
out of their Park Avenue home so that he can take up with Felicity, a lithe but
manipulative protégé. Cue Betty’s two adult daughters, unwed Miranda, a former high-powered literary agent, and Annie, a single mother and library director, both of whom are in the throes of their own mid-life tsunamis. Did anyone
say road trip? It could have been an exulting journey when Betty, Annie and
Miranda take refuge in Cousin Joe’s ramshackle cottage on the grounds of his
Westport, Connecticut estate. Oh the discovery. The revenge. The deft words of
remorse and confusion. Instead we get lackluster love interests, predictable
kvetching, a near drowning and an untimely death that is intended to shed
insight into the meaning of family and survival. The novel is not totally unsatisfying. There are sweet, “aha” moments and flashes of smartness and wit, but
like an ice cream cone that doesn’t quite hit the spot, this novel melts away, forgotten upon consumption. ◆

Obtaining Beautiful, Natural Results with Permanent Makeup
by Sarit Narkis
Permanent Makeup, also known as permanent cosmetics, micropigmentation, cosmetic tattooing and dermal pigmentation, is the
professional practice and art of implanting micro-insertions of color
(pigment) into the dermal layer of the skin for the purpose of cosmetic enhancement. Permanent makeup can diminish your need for
makeup, define your features, fill in eyebrows that are sparse,
enhance your lips, frame your eyes, camouflage scars and more.
Performed properly, results can be as subtle or dramatic as you’d like, depending upon
your needs and desires. The best Permanent Makeup yields beautiful, natural results that
are never overdone or artificial looking.
Perfectly Designed Eyebrows
what you may see on many other permanent makeup web sites, I believe that less is
more when it comes to permanent eyebrows; the lighter, softer, and more natural the
permanent brow the better.
Eyeliner/Lash Enhancement
Women of any age can use eyeliner or lash enhancement to enhance their eyes. Many
women come in for permanent eyeliner because they feel they look washed out in the
morning and lack definition around the eyes. For some, it's as simple as not being able
to put eyeliner on! For the most subtle change, a lash enhancement will add color just

EAT HEALTHFULLY – AND SAVE $$ ON GROCERIES
Money is tight these days, and it’s tempting to grab cheap fast food
instead of buying more nutritious food at the grocery store. But eating
well doesn’t have to cost more. Making a few small changes in the way
we shop, cook and eat will help us stay healthier and spend less,
according to nutrition experts Lynn Janas, Ph.D., and Hope Bilyk, M.S.,
R.D., from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in
Chicago.
Janas, who holds a Ph.D. in nutrition, suggests envisioning what a healthy
meal looks like, not on a food pyramid but on your dinner plate. Half the
plate should be filled with vegetables. All that fiber will help fill you up. One
quarter should contain protein: lean meat, fish, eggs or beans. One quarter
should include whole grains such as bread, pasta or rice.
Eating healthfully also begins with improving the nutritional quality of
food on your plate, says Bilyk, a registered dietitian. Start small and
keep it simple: substitute a slice of whole-grain bread for the usual
white bread. Occasionally use brown rice
instead of white rice. Instead of a sugary
breakfast cereal, eat oatmeal, muesli or some
other whole grain. “We can add more nutrition to our meals by making small changes,”
Bilyk says.
Eating on the run also can be nutritious if
you grab a piece of fruit instead of a cookie.
Unsalted popcorn, a whole grain, is a good
snack choice, as is a handful of nuts instead
of chips.
Despite the government’s attempt to nudge
more Americans to eat five servings of fruits
and vegetables per day, we don’t consume
enough of them. So keep a bowl of bananas,
apples or oranges on the counter, within easy
reach. Wash a bunch of grapes and put them
in a pretty bowl in the fridge for easy snacking.
All vegetables have different nutrients, so we need to eat a variety of
them. “Put a rainbow on your plate,” advises Bilyk, who suggests
selecting dark-green and dark-orange vegetables. “Color signals potential health benefits.”
Eating healthfully also can help stretch your food dollar. Beans and
lentils are cheap and can be used as extenders for more expensive protein dishes such as red meat. Look for boneless, skinless chicken breasts
on sale and stock your freezer. Whole chickens and chicken thighs are
an economical choice, too.
Try to eat fish twice a week. Canned salmon or tuna in moderate portions are relatively cheap and quite nutritious. Try meatless meals. Use
eggs, but cut out some of the yolks. Use enriched pasta with tomato
sauce and small amounts of ground beef. Make homemade pizza, lim-

iting the cheese and processed meats and piling on the veggies. Buy
fruits and vegetables in season. Buy cheaper store brands. Shop grocery-store sales and farmers’ markets.
Both nutritionists also recommend the “Go, Slow, Whoa” system of
thinking before eating. “Go” heavy on the healthy foods that should fill
your plate. Take it “slow” on meats, processed foods, pizza and low-fat
cheese. Just say “whoa” to regular-fat cheese, ice cream, baked goods,
chips, candy and sugar-sweetened drinks. (OK, except for special occasions. No one’s perfect!)
Eating more healthfully, starting today, can help reduce your healthcare costs in the long run, too. Janas and Bilyk note that the nation’s
four leading killers – heart disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease/stroke
and type 2 diabetes – are often nutrition-related and are largely preventable.
STRUCTURAL FEATURE IN BREAST TISSUE MAY HELP PREDICT WOMEN’S CANCER RISK
Mayo Clinic researchers have found that certain structural features
within breast tissue can indicate a woman’s individual breast-cancer risk.
The findings appear online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The study shows that acini (AS-ih-nye), the small milk-producing elements in breast lobules, can be counted in sample biopsies. The percentage of acini present per lobule at a given age helps indicate cancer
risk.
“Aside from the predictors of heredity, there is no effective independent predictor of risk of breast cancer,” says Lynn Hartmann, M.D., Mayo
Clinic oncologist and senior author of the study. “This risk-estimate
model, based on novel tissue in each individual, may provide a reliable
strategy.”
Researchers studied the tissue structures in 85 patients with breast
cancer and examined earlier, non-cancerous breast biopsies from the
same women. They compared them to 142 age-controlled samples
from Mayo’s Benign Breast Disease Cohort, a repository of benign biopsy tissues. “Women who were more likely to develop breast cancer had
larger lobules with more acini,” says Hartmann.
What’s the significance of the findings? As women age, especially as
they approach menopause, the lobules and acini disappear. This natural
process, called involution, is at the core of this risk factor. Hartmann
says if the lobules aren’t largely gone by the time a woman is 55, her
risk of breast cancer triples.
The Mayo Clinic team hopes this new model, combined with other
patient information and assessments, will greatly improve a physician’s
ability to predict cancer risk for individual patients.

another, but according to a report from the Agency of Healthcare
Research and Quality (AHRQ) in Rockville, Maryland, not only do
women take more medications during their lifetimes, women are more
likely to suffer from adverse drug events than men. As a result of this
trend, women should be proactive about their medication use, says
Rosaly Correa-de-Araujo, M.D., M.Sc., Ph.D., senior advisor for
women's health at AHRQ.
An adverse drug reaction is a harmful, unintended reaction to a drug
administered at a normal dosage. The majority of adverse reactions are
caused by side effects from a drug ingredient, drug interactions and
drug toxicity. A smaller number are caused by unpredictable effects,
which may be immune-related, including allergic reactions.
Because women are more likely than men to experience adverse drug
reactions, it becomes even more important for women to take an active
role in their healthcare. According to the American Academy of Family
Physicians (AAFP), here’s a list of things you should know about each
medicine you take:
• Name (generic name and brand name)
• Reason for taking it
• How much to take and how often to take it
• Possible side effects and what to do if you have them
• How long to continue taking it
• Special instructions (taking it at bedtime or with meals, etc.)
It’s important for women to inform their doctors and pharmacists
about all medications or supplements that they are taking, any known
allergies and if they are currently pregnant or planning on conceiving in
the short-term.
In addition, to ensure that a medication is being taken safely and correctly, the AAFP encourages people to have a list of questions for their
doctor about their medications:
• What does the medicine do?
• When and how should I take the medicine?
• What side effects could I have?
• Will the medicine react to any other medicines, foods or drinks?
• Should I avoid any activities while I'm taking the medicine?
• What should I do if I forget to take the medicine?
• How will I know whether the medicine is working?
According to Correa-de-Araujo, women should learn to research their
medications. Always read those boring instructional inserts. If you have
questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Taking an active role in your
healthcare can help lower the risk of problems associated with medications and supplements.

ty, according to experts who presented their findings at the recent
annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and
Immunology (ACAAI). Americans spend about 90 percent of their time
indoors, where they are repeatedly exposed to indoor allergens and airborne particles that can lead to respiratory symptoms.
“If there was just one thing I could do to fix buildings, it would be to
change the relative humidity,” noted building scientist Doug Garrett,
CEM, CDSM, president of Building Performance and Comfort in
Leander, Texas. “Moisture leads to conditions that are conducive to dust
mites and mold, as well as bacteria, yeast and other living organisms.”
A damp building with high humidity may lead to increased levels of
dust mites and mold, leading to increased allergic respiratory symptoms,
as well as the worsening of asthma. And even if someone is not allergic, molds may produce mycotoxins and volatile organic chemicals
(VOCs) that smell bad and may cause respiratory irritation, Garrett
noted.
Dust mites cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma symptoms.
About 10 percent of the population is allergic to dust mites, according
to the ACAAI. Mold requires moisture to grow. Indoor environments
house many sources of moisture, including condensation and leaky
pipes.
Although there are many culprits that negatively affect indoor air quality, poorly maintained air-conditioning and carpeting are among the
most problematic. “A home’s heating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system, if poorly maintained, can become a major source of microbial allergens,” said Garrett.
Carpeting, too, often harbors allergens, including dust mites and
molds, said Jeffrey May, M.A., principal scientist of May Indoor Air
Investigations LLC, in Tyngsborough, Mass. Organisms and particles that
become airborne eventually settle in carpeting. In damp environments,
carpeting provides an ideal environment for mold growth. “Many
schools shampoo their carpeting right before school starts at the end of
summer when it’s humid outside,” said May. “There couldn’t be a
worse time.”
Once built, maintenance becomes key. May offers the following advice
for home owners on making their indoor environments healthier:
• Keep the air conditioner clean. Use a filter with an American Society
of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (AHRAE) Standard MERV
(Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) of at least 8.
• Do not have carpeting in any buildings or homes where humidity
can’t be controlled. If you cannot replace carpet, vacuum thoroughly,
carefully and methodically so you don’t stir dust into the air. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or a cyclonic vacuum.
• Prevent mold by dehumidifying the basement. In unfinished basements, humidity should be kept lower than 50 percent. Do research
before buying a dehumidifier. “There are scams out there” said May.
“’Exhaust-only’ systems are not effective.” ◆

Traumatic Brain
and Spine Injury
You know you need an annual
mammogram.
by Donald S. Krieff, D.O., F.A.C.O.S.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI), traumatic injuries to the brain, also called
intracranial injury, or simply head
injury, occurs when a sudden trauma
causes brain damage. TBI can result
from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury and is one of two
subsets of acquired brain injury (ABI). The other subset
is non-traumatic brain injury (e.g., stroke, meningitis,
anoxia). Parts of the brain that can be damaged include
the cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, and brain stem.
The damage from TBI can be focal, confined to one
area of the brain, or diffuse, involving more than one
area of the brain. Diffuse trauma to the brain is frequently associated with concussion (a shaking of the
brain in response to sudden motion of the head), diffuse axonal injury, or coma. TBI can cause a host of
physical, cognitive, emotional, and social effects.
Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe,
depending on the extent of the damage to the brain.
Generally, there are six abnormal states of consciousness that can result from a TBI: stupor, coma, persistent
vegetative state, minimally conscious state, locked-in
syndrome, and brain death. Outcome can be anything
from complete recovery to permanent disability or
death.
Spinal cord injury causes myelopathy or damage to
white matter or myelinated fiber tracts that carry sensation and motor signals to and from the brain. It also
damages any gray matter in the central part of the
spinal cord, causing segmental losses of interneurons
and motor neurons. Spinal cord injury can occur from
many causes, including trauma.
An estimated 17 million Americans sustain TBI each
year. Considered the “signature wound” of the Iraq
and Afghanistan wars, nearly a third of serious brain
injuries lead to permanent disability. TBI can cause a
range of short and long-term changes that affect thinking, sensation, language and emotion. Although estimates vary, up to 80 percent of people with severe
traumatic brain injury do not return to work.
One treatment for these brain injuries is decompressive craniectomy, a last-resort procedure in which half
of the skull is removed for a time in order to allow the
brain to swell. Without a craniectomy, the skull compresses the brain and restricts blood flow, leading to
potentially dangerous and even fatal results. The
patient could also be put into an induced coma right
after this surgery to protect the brain and reduce
intracranial pressure.

Resolving STRESS to Heal your Body & your Life!
by Dr. Michael Berlin
We all know that stress
is a killer. In fact,
research shows that
stress causes a chemical
reaction in the body that
is associated with increased heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes, and certain cancers! Not only
does stress destroy our health; it also
eventually destroys our relationships, life
enjoyment, productivity, and ability to
earn a living.
The good news is that stress can be
completely RESOLVED; and not just temporarily relieved or managed! Impossible
you say? Not quite. The truth is that
stress does not cause our problems; it’s
our inability to handle stress properly
that causes our bodies and lives to break
down! This stress accumulates in the
body and mind and can cause:
back/neck problems, headaches, stom-
ach/digestive, fatigue, skin, infections,
moodiness, ADD/ADHD, depression,
fears, and irritability; just to name a few.
So how does someone attain physical
and emotional health and happiness
even with stress? Here’s how:
We help people heal their bodies and
their lives by doing light pressure points
that blend advanced neurological, energy work, and life-skills coaching to literally RESOLVE all the stress, tension, distortions, and traumas from the body and
mind naturally. Our gentle methods help
people find peace and passion in their
lives while also powerfully helping them
to completely heal from all kinds of
chronic disorders. Live well!

by Joanna Pompilio
As she recalls the poster that burned her image into American pop culture, Raquel
Welch has an odd sense of separation. The figure, clad in the now-infamous doeskin bikini, launched her career into the Hollywood stratosphere, and her life as a
screen siren began. The effect of the character Loana, from the 1967 classic One
Million Years B.C. is undeniable, for both Welch as an actress and to audiences alike.
“That movie established Raquel Welch as the supreme sex symbol of the era. She
became a synonym when you wanted to talk about a sex symbol,” stressed Robert
Thompson, Professor of Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “She was the standard. She became a generic name for sexual beauty. In fact, I constantly heard references to Raquel Welch, before I ever even heard of the movie.”
The sexual energy and pure female strength conveyed makes it no wonder this
former Miss La Jolla beauty pageant winner was catapulted into superstardom. Yet,
her ascent as a sex symbol – and the conflicting feelings Welch has towards the
impact it has had on her life – is one of the main reasons she penned Raquel Welch:
Beyond the Cleavage.
“I think that my image has been one of physical presence, and I’ve been seen
more than I’ve been heard. So there are a lot of things people just don’t know
about me,” explains the San Diego native. “It’s not a tell all; it’s not that kind
of ‘air your dirty laundry’ type of book. It’s simply my whole experience of
being of woman and what that experience is like, and what I would like to pass
along to other women.”
The woman whose beauty has been a confirmed fact for decades openly
acknowledges her own doubts about her physical attributes. At the peak of her
career, Playboy dubbed her the “Most Desired Woman of the ‘70s.” Ironically,
no one was more surprised than her, by the label of sex symbol. “I never got it.
I always thought, ‘Someone is going to find out any minute now. I’m a regular person. As soon as they find out, they won’t like me because I won’t be exciting
and spectacular enough for them.’”
Much to the surprise of fans and industry insiders, Welch’s daily life in the ‘60s
and ‘70s was quite different than one would imagine. The woman who burst onto
the Hollywood scene was known as Raquel Welch, but she was an austere contrast
to Jo Raquel Tejada, single mother. Until her film debut, Welch was a struggling
actress who arrived in Hollywood with no car, $200 in her pocket and no connections. She gave herself a three-year deadline to make it. The rest is film history.
Welch went on to win a Golden Globe, and her career has spanned over four
decades, 45 feature films, numerous television specials, two books and Broadway
musicals.
Like many of the 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, Welch
struggled to balance the demands of a career and family. Feelings of guilt for
spending too much time working, and being kept from her son Damon and daughter Tahnee, were constant. Unlike today’s single parents, circa 1960, there were no
after-school programs and no day care services. Even renting an apartment was a
challenge, since many buildings specified children were not allowed. Welch made
compromises and admits to having regrets.
“I think we do make a choice to juggle things in our lives and try to make the best
of it and to find a happy balance. It’s like trying to work out the puzzle of a Rubik’s
cube,” explains the 1957 La Jolla High School graduate. “I could see what the price
was for my children. Then, I felt the guilt and the loss myself, for not being able to
be more with them when I was on location. Sixteen-hour days are what an actress
works. That is the fact of life. And I didn’t have a husband to hand off my kids to,
so it was very difficult. It was an internal struggle. There was a consciousness
weighing on me all the time.”
Dr. Joan Atwood, President and Clinical Director of New York Marriage and Family
Therapists, sees the daily internal conflict single mothers go through, balancing
career and family. According to Dr. Atwood, her patients feel overloaded with
chores, commitments, taking the children to activities and even doing laundry. The
feeling of being spread too thin seems overwhelming, as many women try to do
everything, including being both Mom and Dad to their children.
I’ve been seen more than I’ve been
heard. So there are a lot of things
people just don’t know about me.
“A single mother is doing the best she can do, and in many cases that is just fine.
She needs to focus on being a Mom and not being a Mom and Dad,” insists Atwood.
“There are times when she can give the children quality, face-to-face focused attention, ice cream after soccer, good conversation on the ride home from dance and
asking questions about their friends and life.”
Guilt about not spending enough time with her children is something the actress
discusses at length in her memoir. Her long hours on set, divorce from their father
and the impact of other relationships and marriages caused tension and a strain in
the relationship.
“Guilt is there for a reason. It is because you haven’t done something that you are
happy about or proud of, and you know that something is not right. And until you
come to grips with that, that burden doesn’t lighten,” describes the actress. “So, of
course, as I got older, I had to make a reassessment. I wouldn’t be able to change
everything or bring back moments that I missed or moments where things didn’t go
well between my children and I. But, I could let them know that I recognize certain
shortcomings and that I was ready to listen to them and what they had to say.”
Welch has resolved her relationship issues with her children, but her relationships

expressed her desire for all women who find themselves, post divorce, to think of
this time as an adventure in self-discovery. She also stressed how important it is
for women to not be so hard on themselves, even if they do not find themselves

“I don’t think that you need to make an evaluation of yourself as more or less

wonderful opportunity to find out more about yourself and how you are when
you are accommodating somebody else,” says Welch. “And I wouldn’t rush into
dating. I think that sometimes by looking too hard, it is almost like an act of desperation. That is not self-esteem. That is using other people to make yourself feel
better. I don’t think it is coming from the right place. I think you need to bring

The Beach Body Workout
Moves to Get You into Bikini Shape
Hey, it’s too gorgeous outside to be stuck in the gym! Head outside
for your workout and you can simultaneously work on your tan, enjoy
the great weather, and blast your body into bikini-ready shape. We’ve
got killer lower and upper body moves from two personal trainers –
Stephen Holt of Personal Effects Fitness Training and Fred Foster of the
Sergeant’s Program – that will eradicate winter flab and get you in
beach-baring form.
You may choose to exercise beachside. “Sand is often a good place
for your workout,” says Holt. “For example, if you’re running on sand,
it slows you down and creates more resistance and works your legs,
especially your calves, a whole lot more.
You’ll also get more benefit from doing
these moves on sand because it’s an
uneven surface which works inner and
outer thigh muscles.” (See the sidebar
for a calorie-incinerating workout that
complements
these moves.)
You’ll
find
that most of
these exercises
involve slow,
controlled
movements.
“The key is not
only
the
motions themselves,” says
Foster, “but
the intensity of
the exercise.
You want to make sure that you’re doing
them correctly.” The payoff? If you consistently do our workout two or three days a
week, says Foster, you’ll see definite
results in a month or two.
If you’re running
on sand, it slows
you down and
creates more
resistance and
works your legs,
especially your
calves.
MOVES
One-legged squats (works leg muscles)
Stand up and bend one knee; your foot should be about six inches off
of the ground at a 45-degree angle. Slowly lower your body six to eight
inches keeping your torso erect; hold for one second and slowly return
to your original position. Ten reps on each side make a set; do 2 to 3.
Monster walk (targets inner and outer thighs)

feet apart) steps forward up a sand dune or hill. Keep your butt low by

bending your knees at least 30 degrees at all times, and return by walking backwards, maintaining the same wide stance, back down the hill.
Each 14-20 steps forward and back is one set; complete 2 to 4.
Lying hip raises (works glutes, hamstrings)
Lying on your back, raise up on your elbows; your head and chest will
be off of the ground. Keeping your right leg extended, bend your left
leg and place your left foot flat on the ground. Pushing down with your
left heel and elbows, lift your butt up, squeezing your glutes and hamstrings, and slowly return to your original position. Do 20 reps before
switching to the other leg.
Two-position push-up (works pecs,
triceps)
Assume a push-up position (lying flat,
facing down) with both hands about six
inches apart at breastbone level. Perform
a push-up. When you return to the “up”
position, move both hands (one at a
time) so that they are slightly wider than
shoulder width apart, and perform a
push-up from this wide position. Then
move back to the original position and
repeat. Perform 8 to 15 total reps for one
set; do 2.
Prone “trap” raise (works trapezius,
rhomboids and deltoids)
Lie face down with a folded beach towel
under your chest. Place your arms overhead at about a 45 degree angle (picture
Superman flying). Hold two small dumbbells with your palms facing each other,
thumbs pointing upward. Keeping your
arms straight, lift the dumbbells off the
ground as high as you can without discomfort or straining your neck. (Don’t lift
your head or look up.) Take one second to
bring the weights up, hold for one second, and lower in one second. Perform 23 sets of 12-20 reps.
Supine single arm extension (works triceps)
Lying face up, hold a single dumbbell in your right hand and point
your right arm straight up. Place two fingers of your left hand just
below your right elbow, lightly touching your right triceps to help promote proper form. Keeping the upper arm still, slowly bend your right
arm, letting the weight come down to your right shoulder before pressing it back up. Take three seconds to lower and three seconds to raise
the weight; perform 2-3 sets of 10-14 reps.

Sun gods (works shoulder muscles)
Stand up and place your arms out to your sides at shoulder-height, palms
facing down. Keeping your arms straight and your fingers pointed out,
make 50 small, quick circles toward the front of your body; then make 50
circles toward the rear of your body. Move your arms to shoulder-height in
front of your body, palms facing down, and make 50 of the same tight circles to the inside; then 50 to the outside. Finally, raise your arms above your
head, palms facing in, and make 50 tight circles in one direction and 50 in
the other.
Boulder curls (works biceps)
Select two rocks or boulders that you can grasp in each hand. Standing
straight with arms at your sides, slowly bring your arms up halfway to your
shoulders (your lower arms will be parallel to the ground) in a half-curl,
counting up for four seconds and down for four seconds; do seven reps.
Then do seven reps from the halfway point to your shoulders, again using
a four-count. Finally, do seven full curls using the four-count up and down.
Can-opener (works abs)
Lying flat on your back, place your left ankle on your right knee. Slowly lift
your right shoulder off of the ground towards your left knee and at the
same time, lift your right leg and squeeze your abs as you bring your left
knee toward your chest. Try to bring your left knee and right shoulder
together. Do 25 reps; repeat on the other side.
Laces (works abs, especially obliques)
Lie on the ground with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, arms at
your sides. Lift both shoulders off of the floor with your chin up, and with
your left hand, reach toward the front of your left foot (where your
shoelaces would be); then return to your original position and reach toward
your “laces” on your right foot with your right hand. Alternate for 25 reps
on each side. ◆
Sand Sprints
Ready to try some sand running? This workout will burn tons more calories
than a leisurely beach stroll. “High intensity interval training not only burns
more calories during the workout than running at a steady pace for the equivalent amount of time or distance,” says Holt, “but the ‘afterburn’ is greater
also. It burns more calories in the hours immediately following a workout in
what physiologists call the ‘EPOC’ (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption)
phase.”
Perform a ten-minute warm-up of easy walking progressing to a jog. Then run
at about fifty percent of your top speed for 30 seconds, and walk back to your
starting point. Repeat the thirty-second sprint interval and walking recovery
cycle, making each sprint slightly faster than the one before it. Start with five
total cycles, and follow each workout with a five-minute cool-down.
Holt recommends that clients gradually work up to performing twenty
minutes of these sprint/walk cycles. Advanced athletes can then replace the
walking recovery interval with a jogging recovery interval, but don’t try these
interval workouts more than twice a week.

Pack even more summertime fun into your longer days with extended hours at the

LONG ISLAND WOMAN • July/August 2010 • 35
PARALEGAL:
A Recession-Proof Career
No matter what the economic
outlook, there always seems to be
plenty of legal work to go around —
often more than lawyers can handle on
their own. More and more, attorneys
rely on the services of highly trained
and skilled paralegals and
legal assistants.
According to the 2010-11
Occupational
Outlook
Handbook published by the
U.S. Department of Labor’s
Bureau of Labor Statistics,
employment of paralegals
and legal assistants is
projected to grow 28
percent in the ten years leading up to
2018 — a much greater increase than
predicted for most other careers.
According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, in May 2008 full-time
paralegals and legal assistants
nationally had median annual
earnings of $46,120, with higher
earnings in the New York metropolitan
area. Moreover, the top 10 percent
earned an annual salary of more than
$73,450.
With the exceptions of appearing in
court and rendering legal
advice, paralegals and legal
assistants carry out various
legal services delegated and
supervised by a licensed
attorney. A paralegal training
program
prepares
the
student with the knowledge
and skills necessary to
become an integral part of a
legal team. The curriculum for a
paralegal certificate can be completed
in as little as six months.
For information about Hofstra
University’s Paralegal Studies program,
visit ce.hofstra.edu/paralegal or call

C
yndi Lauper has a
style that is all her
own. Whether it be
her unique vocals,
her dashing fashion sense or her saucy
Queens accent, Lauper is a
true original. After bursting
onto the music scene in late
1983 with her multi-platinum
debut, She’s So Unusual,
Lauper instantly became a
pop culture icon. However,
as time went on and she garnered more success, she
became isolated from her
fans and eventually disconnected. With the release of
her latest CD, Shine, Lauper
is reconnecting with her
audience and winning critical praise along the way.
LONG ISLAND WOMAN recently
spoke with Lauper, about the
rebirth of her career, her
change in perspective since
becoming a mother and why
age doesn’t matter to her
anymore. She will appear at
Westbury Music Fair on
August 31st.

LONG ISLAND WOMAN: Now
that you’re fifty years-old, do
you ever look back at pictures of yourself in the eighties and wonder what you
were thinking?
Cyndi Lauper: It was a different time back then. Most of
my friends kinda looked like
that with those clothes and
what not. Maybe they didn’t
go as crazy with the make-up,
but I liked the make-up. I was always told, “You can’t wear your make-up like that,
it’s really corny!” I was like, “OK, but I like it.”
When did that whole cartoonish image cease?
With my fourth album, Hat Full of Stars (1993). From a musical standpoint, I got
back to my roots. I needed to evaluate why I got into this business in the first
place. I did this to become the best artist I could be as me. I needed to take off all
the war paint to find myself.
How much of that girl from the eighties is still in you?
I still get the shakes when I pass the color department in a drug store (laughs). I
always go right to the color! It gets all over the pillowcases. I used to get calls from
the hotel front desk, “Could you possibly not use that blue you’re using.”
How did becoming a mother effect you as an artist?
It opened up my heart and changed my perspective on life. It’s enriched me as
a writer and an artist. You have to have a real life in order to write. You can’t live in
an ivory tower and expect to feel a connection with humanity.
Do you feel as if you’re in the midst of a comeback?
I am coming back - I’m coming back to the people. I feel extraordinarily

blessed. It’s different than
before because I’m directly
connected to and affected by
the strength of the people. In
the beginning, it was about
the people but as I got more
successful I became cut off
from the people. Now I’m
coming back to them.
What did you think of
VH1’s “Behind the Music”
program they did on you?
I think they did a good job.
But, it’s weird to watch. At
first, I could hardly watch it. I
was like, “Oh my God is that
what I looked like? Oh my
God, is that what I wore?” But
I’ve come to the conclusion
that it’s all good.
You recently turned fifty.
Does age bother you?
Sometimes it does when I
buy into that stupid belief system that everyone has that
you’re supposed to do this by
this age, you’re supposed to
do that at that age. I don’t
look at my work as a career,
it’s a vocation, it’s a craft. If
the Rolling Stones can do it,
why can’t I? We live in a different time. It’s not what we
are being bought and sold as.
For example, look at what’s
out there in the fashion world.
Who really looks like those
models? Why is it that the
majority of women in this
country are size 14 and that’s
not even in the stores or considered in fashion. It’s ludicrous. The size 14s can still go
out and look cool because you
wear what looks good on you.
How important is fashion to you?
I like to look nice and wear fashionable things. I still mix things up and wear
things that don’t go together because I like everything with a twist. I’m wearing a
lot of suits these days. It took me a while to come into what I like.
Are you still looking to act?
I’ve been looking at some projects. A recurring part in something that’s funny
would be good so I can still do my music.
Do you consider yourself a diva?
Honey, I was a diva when I was four!
Does your seven year-old son enjoy what his mom does for a living?
He loves my videos and he plays along on the drums. He’s been playing drums
since the age of two. It was not our first choice but his. He does it well and we
encourage him. He also plays dress-up a lot. He’ll often put on his policeman outfit and come and arrest my husband and I. He’s got a great imagination.
Have you made your masterpiece yet?
I don’t know. I’m still going forward. But, I think it’s worth chasing.r
