Introduction
Electro Magnetic Compatibility
The increase in frequency and power of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and the increasing of electronic noise is a major threat to the
integrity of telecommunications, avionics, industrial and defence equipment. Many semiconductor circuits are particularly sensitive to
voltage transients or spikes on signal and control lines.
Designing equipment to operate within this intended electromagnetic environment and be compatible with worldwide electromagnetic
legislation is essential. Many methods are now available to ensure equipment meets directives on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
EMC describes the ability of the electrical and electronic equipment to function as intended, without being adversely affected by an
electromagnetic interference and without being the source of such interference.
Oxley has established itself as a leading manufacturer and supplier in the field of EMC components with a wide range of discrete and
integrated filters and filtering systems.
EMI Suppression Filtering
To protect equipment against radiated interference sources, it is necessary to screen equipment from electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Although several techniques exist, the effectiveness of these techniques is often compromised by the need to have input/output signals
and power lines passing through the screen. Feedthrough filters are often the most cost effective solution to stopping both unwanted
conducted interference from entering the electronics system and the pollution of the external environment from the noise generated within
the screened cabinet. Feedthrough filters used to protect equipment which is likely to cause or be affected by EMI must meet
electromagnetic compliance regulations.
Feedthrough Filters
The primary function of Feedthrough filters is to attenuate the high frequency or radio frequency (RF) currents and voltages, which would
otherwise cause a circuit malfunction. Feedthrough filters which incorporate ceramic capacitor elements and series inductors are LOW
PASS filters and are designed to pass all frequencies below a specific cut-off frequency.

In order to function correctly, a feedthrough filter must be installed so that it makes a low impedance to ground and does not comprise the
equipment shielding.
Feedthrough utilize co-axial capacitors and inductors in their construction. The capacitor can be either of tubular or discoidal construction.
The advantages of co-axial capacitors in signal or power line filtering are:
1. The capacitor provides DC isolation between the signal line and ground.
2. There is a short earth path for high frequency noise on the line.
3. The “filtering” occurs at the optimum interface of the equipment being protected.
4. Low self inductance to prevent resonances.
A Total In-House Ceramic Capability
The key element of a feedthrough filter is the ceramic capacitor. Oxley have invested in the ongoing expansion and development of its
in-house capacitor manufacturing facility, dedicated to the supply of ceramic capacitor components and technologies for filtered
connectors and feedthrough components.
The facility is equipped with cleanroom conditions for all the critical manufacturing operations. Statistical process control (SPC)
techniques are applied to the manufacturing process in order to control key parameters during capacitor production. This enables our
team to maintain and improve production techniques.
Types of Feedthrough Filters
Feedthrough filters are characterized by their electrical configuration and by their mounting style. The following tables summaries the

Feedthrough Filters - Electrical Configuration
Feedthrough filters are supplied with a variety of combinations of capacitive (C) and inductive (L) elements. The simplest being a C type
consisting of a coaxial capacitor only. In the LC filter an inductive element is added as shown in Fig. 2.

The Pi filter is a combination of two capacitors and an inductor which gets its name from the equivalent circuit’s resemblance to the π
symbol. Similarly the T section filter is a combination of two inductors and a capacitor as shown in Fig. 3.

Product Installation
Due to the nature of the components used in the assembly of ceramic filters, great care must be taken to avoid damage either by
mechanical or thermal stress during the installation or termination of the device. Bending or cropping of terminal wires should not be
carried out unless adequate support of the wire can be provided to eliminate the possibility of mechanical stress or shock during the
cutting operation.
To achieve optimum insertion loss performance, the design of the equipment must be such that it allows for the component to be mounted
to a bulkhead of minimal impedance. Co-axial earthing over a full 360° must be achieved and input and output connections should be
screened from each other.
Lead Wire Attachment
1. To eliminate the risk of thermal shock, the filter assembly should be preheated to 120°C (248°F) for 5 minutes.
2. Joints should be effected using a soldering iron with a bit temperature not exceeding 300°C (572°F). To minimize the heat
transfer to the filter elements, the solder joint should be completed within a period not exceeding 10 seconds, 60/40 or
62/36/2 solders should be used.
3. The assembly should be allowed to cool at a rate not exceeding 100°C (212°F) per minute.
4. In subsequent degreasing operations, care must be taken to avoid any thermal shock.
Component Mounting
Solder Style
1. Mounting of the filter should be achieved using either 60/40 or 62/36/2 cream or solder preform.
2. The filter and mounting plate must be preheated together to eliminate thermal shock on the ceramic elements. This assembly
should be allowed to increase in temperature gradually by soaking in an ambient of 120°C (248°F) for a period of up to
5 minutes where possible. Heat must not be applied directly to the filter body and the temperature on the filter surface should
not be allowed to increase faster than by 100°C (212°F) per minute.
3. After the preheat cycle, the mounting plate temperature should be raised to achieve solder flow. The solder flow state should
be maintained for a minimum period, consistent with a good joint (normally less than 10 seconds).
Threaded Style
1. All thread area and mating surfaces must be clean and dry prior to assembly.
2. If a washer is used, this must be fitted between the nut and ground plane. The selection of the washer style - either internal
toothed or wavy, must take into consideration the material of the bulkhead. It is recommended that toothed washers should
not be used in conjunction with protective finishes such as alochrome.
3. If mounting in a threaded hole, the form of the hole should be as style A, which is designed to ensure efficient RF sealing of
the assembly by maximizing the mating surface area. For mounting in a plain hole by the use of the supplied mounting
hardware, the clearance hole should be as style B.
4. The maximum panel thickness as detailed for the particular device must not be exceeded. The mounting torque as defined
below for the particular style of hole and thread diameter must be observed. No strain should be exerted on the cylindrical
part of the filter body or on any of the terminal/seal areas.
5. Locking compounds, if used, should be applied after the device has been installed to the correct mounting torque to avoid the
danger of mating surface contamination and the subsequent increase in the resistance of the filter to the bulkhead joint
(resulting in serious insertion loss degradation).

6. When mounting into a threaded hole, the maximum permissible mounting torque applied must be limited to half the value
defined for mounting into a non-threaded hold (Table 2.).

Performance Measurement and Calculations
Insertion Loss
The performance of low pass filters is often characterized in terms of an insertion loss curve. Insertion low can be described as the ratio
of voltages across the load with and without the filter in the circuit. This is generally defined using a 50 Ω input and load impedance, and
given in decibels (dB).
Insertion Loss (dB) = 20 log10 (V1/V2)
Where V1 in the signal voltage without the filter present and V1 in the voltage after the filter has been put into the circuit.
Example: V1 = 100 millivolts, V2 = 1 millivolt
The filter is providing an insertion loss of:

All insertion loss figures shown in this catalogue are measured in a 50Ω system.
Where the effect of temperature and load currents on the insertion loss has been taken into account in the filter design this is stated in the
data table headings.
All values claimed have been inset to cover measurement uncertainties and together with production component spreads, actual
measured values will exceed the claims by typically 3 dB.
Since load current increase and temperature excursion reduce the insertion loss of any filter, operation at lower load current and/or
temperature excursion than defined in the data tables will result in further gains of insertion loss of typically 3 to 6 dB.
To achieve optimum insertion loss, the filter should be mounted on a bulkhead of minimal RF impedance and provide co-axial earthing
over 360°. The bulkhead should offer effective screening between input and output connections. (See “Bulkhead Mounting Details” on
page 54.)

Figure 4 shows the insertion loss characteristics of various values of simple C style feedthrough filters measured in a 50 Ω system. The
rising graphs show that the insertion loss rises as the frequency increases above a set point known as the cut-off frequency.
The cut-off frequency is usually defined as the point at which the insertion loss rises above 3 dB. Interference signals at frequencies
above the cut-off frequency are increasingly attenuated by the filter. The filter capacitor value must be chosen to ensure that the cut-off
frequency is above the desired signal bandwidth. Higher value capacitances resulting in lower cut-off frequencies, for the same system
impedance.

Figure 5 shows a comparison of typical insertion loss characteristics of different filter configurations. These graphs show that although the
insertion loss of an inductive element (L) on its own is very poor, when it is combined with a capacitor to form an LC filter the performance
is improved dramatically.
The inductive elements used in most leadthrough filters are in the form of a ferrite bead which has a drop off in attenuation at higher
frequencies, leading to the flattening of the high frequency insertion loss response for the L and Pi types.
The responsive curve of the Pi section filter shows an even steeper gradient beyond the cut-off frequency. The dip in the response around
the cut-off frequency is due to self resonance. Filter resonances will not cause any problems, providing they are well above the frequency
band of the required signal.
In Figures 4 and 5 the characteristics are shown for the filters operating in a 50 Ω system, however, the source and load impedance of the
circuit in which the filter is operating can have a dramatic effect on the insertion loss. Figure 6 shows the relative low insertion loss of a C
type filter operating with a 5 Ω source instead of 50 Ωs. The graph also shows the dramatic improvement when the filter is replaced with
an L type. In this case the inductive element should be connected to the lower impedance side of the circuit.

Current
The average line current must not exceed the rated current shown in the datasheet. At temperatures in excess of 105°C (221°F), up to a
maximum of 125°C (257°F), the maximum current must be derated linearly to 0.6 times the rated current.
The possibility of current transients or surges must be considered. The steady state line current plus the transient of surge current should
not be allowed to exceed the following:
1.5 times rated current for 10 secs
4 times rated current for 500 ms
8 times rated current for 50 ms
In filter units incorporating inductors, an increase in line current will reduce the value of the inductor and hence reduce the level of
insertion loss achieved. The insertion loss claimed is only achieved within the load measurement condition defined.
Devices specifying claiming insertion loss at full load current will exhibit higher insertion loss at lower currents.
Voltage
The maximum voltage which may be applied to any filter element must not exceed the voltage rating of the device.
The AC rated voltage is defined for operation up to 125°C (257°F) and for frequencies up to 400 Hz. The peak AC voltage must not
exceed the defined 125°C (257°F).
The possibility of voltage transients or spike must be considered in determining the device voltage.
Termination Impedance
In line with all common measurement techniques, insertion loss figures are claimed within 50Ω termination conditions.
In practice, systems may present termination impedance very different from 50Ω. Input and output impedance amy also be different from
each other. The circuit style of the filter should be selected after taking into consideration the input and output termination impedance.
Temperature
The operating temperature for the device is defined in the specific rating table - normally from -55°C (131°F) to +125°C (257°F).
Temperature significantly affects the capacitor value and hence, the insertion loss achieved. The insertion loss claimed is only achieved
within the temperature limits defined.
The effect of line current in increasing the temperature of the filter must be remembered. Mounting onto a bulkhead, as well as providing
an efficient RF screen, must also provide an efficient heat sink.
The storage temperature of the device must not exceed the operating temperature limits. Extended storage at high ambient temperatures
may cause degradation in the solderability of the terminations or discoloration of the finish.
DC Voltage Drop
The effect of the resistance and rated current has been taken into consideration in the temperature rating of the filter. However, the
voltage drop at line current should be borne in mind when selecting the current rating of the device. Higher current ratings should be
selected if voltage drop must be minimized.
In AC applications, the effect of the AC impedance of the inductor may become significant.
Filter Construction
Perhaps the most important factor in the performance of the filter is the capacitor. The capacitor in the filter directly affects the
performance of the filter, the reliability, size and cost.
There are three basic types of ceramic capacitor commonly used in the construction of EMI filters: discoidal ceramic multilayer
feedthrough capacitor, tubular ceramic feedthrough capacitor and multiway planar capacitor array.

Ceramic capacitor materials are usually barium titinate based. The “blend” of the ceramic composition affects the dielectric constant
(relative permativity) and the temperature stability of the capacity. The capacitance of the component is a function of the dielectric
constant, the number of electrodes within the capacitor and the thickness of the ceramic layer between the electrodes.

Ageing
All Ceramic capacitors decrease in capacitance with time, according to a logarithmic law, typically between 1 and 6% per decade.
The ageing restarts (the capacitor returns to its highest value) each time the capacitor is heated above 100°C
Oxley filters are measured and the capacitance value referenced to 24 hours after this start of the ageing process.

Product Safety Information
Product: RFI Filters
This must be read in conjunction with the Product Data Sheet. Failure to observe the ratings and information on this sheet may constitute
a safety hazard.
1. Material Content
The major materials employed in the manufacture of these filters are inherently safe - being ceramic, metal and
glass. Silicone based encapsulation/impregnants are used. Resin sealed filters use Epoxy or Polyurethane
based resin seals.
2. Physical Form
Cylindrical metal housing with terminals at both ends. Proper mounting is essential for good R.F. performance
and also to prevent damage to the encapsulation under conditions of mechanical shock or vibration which would
result in premature failure of the component.
3. Intrinsic Properties
Non-Operating
Units may or may not contain discharge resistors - hence terminals must be shorted to case after switch off and
fully discharged before handling, otherwise there is the risk of electrical shock.
Operating
When operated within the rated conditions a long period of satisfactory operation will be obtained, but there is a
finite probability of short circuit failure to case and the design of general circuitry should allow for this.
Filter devices in this catalogue have not been subjected to those specific tests required of devices used on
220-240 VAC or other AC supplies, where electric shock hazard safety regulations apply.
4. Fire Characteristics
Primary
Any component subjected to abnormal power dissipation may:
a. Self ignite.
b. Become red hot.
c. Emit toxic fumes.
The component voltage ratings must not be exceeded, otherwise a hazard to health may ensue.
Secondary
In general, approximately 90% of the materials which make up these capacitors are ceramic and metal and fire
risk is minimal except for the silicone coating and resin seals.
5. Handling and Installation
The normal care required for small electronic components should be observed, in order that the insulating
encapsulation is not damaged. When subjected to testing, capacitors may retain a charge even after they have
been removed from test equipment.
Attention is drawn to the specific installation guides in the catalogue, especially with regard to soldering
temperatures and mounting thread torque ratings.
6. Storage
The normal conditions for storage should not exceed -55ºC to 125ºC and extreme humidity should be avoided.
7. Disposal
Incineration may cause the emission of toxic fumes and must therefore be avoided, otherwise no special hazards
are involved in disposal.
8. Unsafe Use
Most failures are of a passive nature and do not represent a safety hazard. A hazard may, however, arise if this
failure causes a dangerous malfunction of the equipment in which the capacitor is employed. Circuits should be
designed to fail safe under normal modes of failure.
Operation outside the specified ratings represents unsafe use.
