ABOUT FTHM
It is hard to imagine a more perfect place for studying tourism than this – the location of the
Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Ika. The main building overlooks the sea
and does not resemble a typical university since it looks more like a hotel with its palm trees
in the front and terraces at the top. Just a few meters from the main entrance it is possible to
dip your toes in the salty water and feel the refreshing sea breeze. Moreover, it also provides
a stunning view of the Kvarner Bay and the city of Rijeka, and you can also admire the
mountains of Gorski kotar that loom in the background of the city. The whole surrounding
coastal area is a tourist destination in summer, full of hotels, apartments and attractions.
Studying tourism in Ika literally means experiencing tourism.

The Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Opatija, a part of the University
of Rijeka, is Croatia's only university institution fully oriented towards educating managerial
positions in tourism and hospitality, as well as to the scientific development in this field. With
more than 50 years of experience, it successfully contributes to the development of Croatian
tourism by implementing new trends and models which will appropriately represent the
natural attractions and the cultural wealth of our country. FTHM cooperates with numerous
partner institutions from all around the world. Since 2011 it has hosted foreign exchange
students, whose number has been steadily increasing every year. The main goal of the
Faculty is to become the leading institution in tourism and hospitality education in the region.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEM
The faculty’s assessment system is based on the Bologna process and the European Credit
Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). A wide choice of subjects in English as well as
language courses are offered to exchange students. The students’ learning outcomes are
continuously assessed throughout the semester. After passing a subject they receive the
allocated number of ECTS points. Classes are held on a regular basis, usually in small
groups.

Midterms and the final exam are written and/or oral and they consist of open-ended and
closed-ended questions. Points are calculated into a percentage of acquired knowledge,
skills and competences (from 0 to 100%). Students can get marks from 1 to 5 (1 is the worst,
5 the best). The Faculty uses the integral information system Lumens 5+, where all subjects

chosen by a student are made available along with their description, grades as well as
contacts to teachers and other important information. The access to their enrolled courses is
possible through the faculty website www.uniri.fthm.hr. Students receive their personal login
and password at the beginning of the semester.

LIBRARY
The faculty library stores various publications from the field of tourism and hospitality.
Numerous publications as well as specialist magazines are available in English. Access to
numerous databases is possible from Faculty computers. You can find the full list of available

Additionally, there are two libraries in the centre of Rijeka, which offer numerous English

HOW TO GET TO THE FACULTY?
The main Faculty building is in Ika, which is a small tourist village on the Opatija Riviera,
located between the city of Opatija and Lovran. It is in the close proximity (17 kilometres) of
the 3rd largest city in Croatia – Rijeka, where the University of Rijeka and the majority of other
faculties are situated. It is possible to travel from Rijeka to Ika by public transport - bus no. 32
(direction Lovran, the bus stop closest to the Faculty is the one just after the beach in Ika).
It takes about 45 minutes to get to the Faculty from Rijeka city centre. Buses depart roughly
every 30 minutes.
STUDENT ID CARD “X-ica”
Upon arrival, each student will receive a student ID card called ‘X-ica’ (“X-card”), which
serves as an official student identification in Croatia. Students can use the X-card to make
use of numerous benefits and discounts, but most importantly to be able to eat in student
canteens and restaurants.
STUDENT LIFE
Besides studying and taking exams, the Faculty does not forget about your need for a social
life. The FTHM Student Body is dedicated to providing students with up-to-date information,
the protection of fundamental student rights and the organisation of student activities.
It devises and implements a variety of projects as well as initiates diverse student
programmes and activities at the faculty.

Additionally, if you are into sports, you can sign up for the University Sports Association.
This will give you the opportunity to train with Croatian students and participate in various
competitions. Furthermore, FTHM has its own basketball, volleyball and rowing teams.

and parties will be organized at the Campus in Rijeka.
3.
ACCOMMODATION / HOUSING
A certain number of rooms is reserved for incoming students coming to study at the
University of Rijeka in the student dormitory (Address: Čandekova Street 4, Rijeka). In order
to apply for a place in the student dormitory, you should contact the International Relations
Office in Rijeka in advance, but bear in mind that places are limited so first come, first
served. The dormitory is divided into female and male buildings and the monthly rent is only
50 €. The conditions are quite decent, especially for boys, and additionally it provides you the
opportunity to meet many Croatian students.
If you prefer to live in a flat, your incoming buddies (students from the University of Rijeka)
should help you with finding an appropriate one. There are plenty of flats that can be rented
(usually fully furbished), and you are bound to find something that suits your needs and
wishes. The average monthly price for renting one room is 150 € + utilities.
Advice: If you are an FTHM student, it is really convenient to live somewhere in the city
centre, near the starting station of the bus nr 32. While there are a lot of people taking this
bus, it is usually very crowded so entering at one of the first bus stops give you a chance to
take a sit instead of standing for 40 minutes during the drive.

4.
TRANSPORT
TRAIN STATION
The train station in Rijeka may not be the most modern and most busy train station there is,
but it offers good and affordable connections to other cities in Croatia and in Europe. There
are direct trains to Ljubljana (cheap and fast), Vienna, Budapest and Munich.

Advice: It is much cheaper to buy return tickets instead of one-way, and there are special
discounts if you buy tickets for groups (min. 6 people).
COACH STATION
The coach station in Rijeka is located in the city centre, in a square called Žabica. The coach
network in Croatia is very well developed and it offers convenient and affordable connections
from Rijeka to Zagreb, Dalmatia, Trieste (Italy) and many others cities. If you plan to travel
longer distances, it would be advisable to also check connections from Zagreb.
It is always better to buy tickets in advance because sometimes, especially on weekends,
buses might be crowded and you might end up stuck at the coach station. In addition to the
ticket fee, you have to pay for the seat reservation (6 KN). You will also be charged with 6KN
for larger items of luggage.

There are few bus companies that operate in Croatia. One of the most popular ones, with its
headquarters in Rijeka, is Autotrans, It offers a 50 % discount for students for round-trip
tickets over 100 km. It also grants discounts for EURO 26 and ISIC card holders.

Advice: If you want to obtain a student discount card for Autotrans tickets, you should ask for
a confirmation from the Faculty that you are a student there. You should then bring the
confirmation and a passport photo to the coach station, the information desk. They will then
issue your student discount card – ATR ISKAZNICA, which you should always show when
buying coach tickets.
AIRPORT
The nearest airport is located on the Island of Krk (around 30 minutes by car from Rijeka).
There are buses operating from Rijeka to the airport. It is a small airport, but it provides
convenient connections to Northern Europe: UK, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Sweden,
Denmark as well as Germany and Russia. The majority of flights operate mainly from May to

As coach tickets in Croatia can be quite expensive, sometimes it is more reasonable to rent
a car, especially if you plan a trip with your friends. There are several companies renting cars
in Rijeka. The price depends on the car’s class, the distance you will travel and the number
of people.

Advice: It is always useful to check information on traffic and road conditions before you
travel, since in the summer there are many traffic jams and in the winter roads can be closed

CLIMATE / WEATHER
Rijeka has a humid subtropical climate with warm summers and relatively mild and rainy
winters. Snow is rather rare, usually occurs 3 days per year and it is a huge happening in the
city. What you need to worry about more is rain, since Rijeka is quite rainy, especially in the
autumn and spring. The most characteristic feature of the climate is a wind called BURA,
which blows from the mountains towards the sea and brings cold but clear weather. Besides
the bura, a common wind during the
winter is the jugo (“jug” means South
in Croatian), which brings cloudy
and rainy weather. On average there
are
22 days per year
with a
maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) or higher,
on the other hand temperatures
below 0°C are quite rare.
Advice: Definitely pack something to help combat the rain: a good umbrella (that will stand
the strong winter winds), wellies (rubber boots) and a waterproof jacket.
6.
GETTING AROUND
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
AUTOTROLEJ is the company in charge of the public transportation in Rijeka. There are 3
types of bus lines: city lines, city night lines and suburban lines. You will easily notice the bus
stops by locating the yellow marks on the street. You can find timetables at every bus stop,
but only for the city buses. The time on the timetable is the time at which the bus departs

from the first station and you have to add the number of minutes on the timetable to know
what time it will arrive at your stop. Bear in mind that suburban lines do not stop at every
station.
BUS FARES AND TICKETS
For you, the most important bus line
will be the number 32 – it runs from
Lovran, through Opatija and all the
way
to
Rijeka.
In
the
opposite
direction, the 32 bus departs from
Rijeka, but the writing on the front of
the bus tells you how far it will take
you, whether just to Opatija, to Lovran
or even further. So beware – when

you are travelling from Rijeka be sure to get on the 32 bus with "Lovran" written on it,
otherwise you might be stuck in Opatija and will have to wait for the next bus.
You can buy single, return and day tickets at any kiosk. You can also buy single tickets when
you get on the bus (but then one trip will cost a bit more than if you buy a return ticket
straight away at a kiosk).
There are 4 bus zones that cover Rijeka, Opatija and the surroundings. If you travel from
Lovran to Rijeka you need a ticket for 4 zones, if you only travel from Lovran to Opatija you
need a ticket for 2 zones.

Monthly/weekly bus passes
Monthly/weekly bus passes can only be purchased at three locations:
a) at the last/first bus stop of the number 32 bus in Rijeka (Jelačićev trg/Jelačić square);
open on workdays from 6:30-19:30 and Saturdays 7:30-16:30
b) Delta (in Rijeka) – about 300m from the Jelačić square, towards Trsat. Same working
hours as the offices on Jelačić square.

c) Opatija, at the Slatina square. Working hours from 9-15:30 on weekdays,
8-12:30 on Saturdays.
Weekly bus passes can be purchased either for one zone (80KN) or for all four zones
(160KN) and they include the unlimited use of all city buses (all Autotrolej buses). Your name
and the duration of validity are written on the bus pass.
Monthly bus passes are more complicated to obtain – you need a confirmation issued by the
faculty, a 3x3.5 cm photograph and a registration form from the police (ask your buddy for
help with this). You can only buy a ticket for the whole month, not for certain dates. This is
why at the beginning of each month there are long queues at the Autotrolej offices, full of
people waiting to buy their monthly bus passes. Therefore you would be wiser to buy them
a bit earlier (at the end of the month), that way you can avoid the long queues. The monthly
tickets are valid until the 5th day of the following month. The price of the monthly bus pass for
1-4 zones with a student discount is 110 KN ( approx. 15 € ).
There are night buses, but only within Rijeka and only on Fridays and Saturdays. Your best
choice for travelling during the night are taxis, which are quite affordable (depending on the
distance).
In Opatija, the budget taxi service is called HALLO TAXI, you can reach them by phone on
00385 51 704 100 or 00385 91 2704 100 – the second phone number is a mobile phone, so
it might cost more to call. The starting price during the day (6:00-22:00h) is 18KN, and you
pay another 5KN per km, for the first 5km. If your trip is longer than 5km, then each
additional km costs 6KN. At night you have to pay 30% more for your trip.
The most popular budget taxi company in Rijeka is called CAMMEO TAXI (00385 51 313
313) and they charge 20KN for each trip up to 5km, and after the first 5 km you pay an extra
5 KN per additional km. The best place in Rijeka to catch a taxi is Žabica, where the main
coach station is.
Advice: Cammeo taxis can be quite difficult to get on weekends as everyone is trying to get
a ride. There are other companies that are also quite affordable and you can always try to
negotiate with the driver and to get a discount.

Checking the bus schedule for the first time can be a bit confusing. Here is a short
explanation, how to read and understand the timetable. First of all, some translation:
RADNIM DANOM POLAZAK – departure during the week days
POVRATAK – return during the week days
SUBOTOM – Saturdays
NEDJELJOM I PRAZNIKOM – Sundays and holidays
The route you will use most often is the bus no. 32 so here is a small explanation of its
schedule:
When the last station of a bus is the centre of Lovran the schedule ends at this point.

For example: If you take the 8:00 bus from Rijeka you will arrive in the centre of Lovran at
8:50.
If you want to go further to places like Medveja or Mošćenička Draga you have to take a bus
which continues after Lovran. However, shortly after you pass Lovran centre, you will have to
change buses for the rest of your trip. For example: the bus departing at 5:25 from Rijeka
arrives in Lovran at 6:10, and a couple stops after you pass Lovran centre, the bus will stop,
where you have to change into another 32 bus, but this time it will say that the direction is
Mošćenička Draga. Getting to Brseč is similar. The only difference is that it has to say
Zagore on the front of the bus, which is the last station of the 32 line.
Advice: You have to be really careful reading the schedule to avoid being stuck for hours in
one place. Suburban lines operate very rarely during the weekends, so if you plan to explore
somewhere further, it is more reasonable to do this during the week.
7.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
Croatians love sports and for them it as an extremely important part of their life. Football,
handball, water polo, basketball, volleyball and swimming are the most popular ones. The
majority of sports facilities in Rijeka are located in the western part of the city. While staying
in Rijeka, you should definitely see a football game or a water polo match to feel the thrilling
atmosphere and to see how enthusiastically Croatians support their teams.
SPORTS FACILITIES IN RIJEKA
BAZENI KANTRIDA – a modern swimming pool complex, located next to the sea. It includes
five pools (two Olympic-sized pools, a 25 m long pool, a children’s pool as well as a diving
pool). This is where the water polo matches take place. The team from Rijeka is called
“Primorje” and it is very successful both in Croatia, as well as internationally. Its players are
part of the very successful Croatian water polo representation (Croatia was the Olympic

ATHLETICS HALL KANTRIDA - located just right of the football stadium, intended for various
sports and leisure activities: handball, basketball, indoor soccer, tennis, badminton, aerobics.
This is also where various indoor athletics competitions are held.
ZAMET SPORTS CENTRE - a new modern public building which includes a modern indoor
sports hall. Handball or volleyball matches
often take place here.

BEACHES IN RIJEKA
Since it is located by the Adriatic sea, Rijeka offers several nice beaches with crystal clear
water. The vast majority of them are stone, however several are pebbled. The biggest and
most popular beach is called Ploče, located just below the Kantrida swimming pool complex.
Furthermore, Pećine beach is close to the centre of Rijeka, and it consists of several smaller
beaches and one main beach with a
beach bar. You can reach these
beaches with the bus no. 1 (direction
Pećine, last stop). If you exit the bus
at the second-to-last bus stop on the
same route, you can find another
small, but absolutely gorgeous beach,
which is located close to the Hotel
Jadran and can easily be noticed from
the street.

If you take the bus no. 1 back in the opposite direction, you can get to any of the beautiful
beaches in Bivio and Preluk. These beaches are connected by a long pedestrian path along
the sea called the Lungomare, and it is absolutely perfect for jogging or going on long,
relaxing walks.

BEACHES AROUND RIJEKA
On your way to the Faculty, the bus no. 32 passes next to the following beaches: PLOČE,
BIVIO, PRELUK (which offers perfect conditions for windsurfing), OPATIJA, IČIĆI, IKA and
others.

You can go also take the bus no. 32 to explore places that are further away, for example
MEDVEJA or MOŠĆENIČKA DRAGA. These beaches are big and perfect for spending a
whole day relaxing and sunbathing. You can even go as far as BRSEČ, and spend some
time at one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole region (see: How to read the bus
schedule ).
If you’re from Rijeka, one of the most popular places to go to the beach is located at the
opposite side of the Kvarner Bay, just a short drive from Pećine. It is a small municipality
called KOSTRENA, where you can find numerous pebbled beaches, beach bars and cozy
restaurants, which is why many young people come here. Throughout the year many people
also come here to go for walks, since these beaches are connected by a long walking path,
similar to the Lungomare. To get to Kostrena, you should take the bus no. 10A or 10 from
Rijeka (Delta bus station) and the best leave at the station close to the big parking lot or ask
a driver or young people in the bus.
8.
FOOD
STUDENT CANTEENS
Croatia is a wonderful country, and you could say that it really takes care of its students.
At the beginning of the semester, you will obtain your own student card called ‘X-ica’. For
many students the X-ica will be the most important thing they have, for the whole period of

their study in Croatia. With this card you can eat at student canteens, which offer statesubsidized meals for students that have an unbelievable discount of 75 %. That means you
can eat a three-course meal containing of soup, main course and dessert for less than 1 €!
Not only that, but you can drink coffee for 0,20 € or get pizza for 0,50 €.
How does it work? At the beginning of each month, each card topped up with the “virtual”
equivalent of 750 KN. Every time you buy food in the canteen, money is deducted from your
card. You will get a receipt on which you can check how much money you have left on your
account (some students run out of money halfway through the month, so be careful ;) )
Advice: You can also use the card also for your friends or family visiting you – just tell the
cashier that you would like to pay together by saying : ‘Može zajedno?’.
In Rijeka there are 3 canteens:
1) INDEX – KREŠIMIROVA STREET 18 – (near the train station)
Open: Mon – Sat, 11:00 – 21:00 (you can order food till 20:30)
Pizzeria and café are closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
There are 4 different counters where you order food in Index :
Linija 1 – when you enter, it’s on the right side. It offers the biggest selection of food and this
is also where the biggest crowds are. You have to tell the servers what you want to eat by
pointing at it, or even better by saying the appropriate meal names (see the dictionary).
Linija 2 – when you enter, it’s on the left side. It works similar to the first section, the only
difference is that there is less variety of food and they also offer ready prepared plates
(but you can always order something else).
Barbecue – located in the middle part of the canteen. You have to take a seat around the
barbecue and wait for the woman to address you (they do not speak English so you can ask
someone sitting next to you for help).

Pizzeria/Cafe – on the first floor, on the left side you will see the counter where you can order
pizza, drinks or cakes. You will get two receipts for each dish you select. Then on the right
side, at the bar you can get drinks and cakes. With pizza it is more complicated – you need
to sit at a table and wait for a server to approach you.

Lovran. The prices there are a bit higher
than in Index and you have only one
menu but the food is really tasty.
Additionally, you can order a cake from
the nearby restaurant without paying
anything extra – however, 20 KN are
deducted from your card. What is special
about this restaurant is its location by the sea. Not only does it offer a cheap meal and
affordable dessert, but you can also admire the sea and a view of Rijeka and its stunning
surroundings.
You can reach the canteen on foot, if you walk 15 minutes on the Lungomare from the
Faculty, or by taking the 32 bus to the centre of Lovran (2 bus stations from the Faculty). The
canteen is open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

LOCAL SPECIALTIES
MANEŠTRA - a thick vegetable and dried
meat (or sausage) soup/stew from Istria
(similar to the Italian minestrone), usually
made with beans, potatoes and cabbage.
From time to time it is served in Index.
PRŠUT – dry-cured ham (2 types: dalmatinski
and istarski). It is considered to be a Croatian
delicacy and can be quite expensive!
CHESTNUTS (MARUNI) – a sweet chestnut
species that grows on the Opatija Riviera at
the foot of Mount Učka, especially around
Lovran – there is even a month-long event
dedicated to called “Marunada”. It takes place
in
early
autumn
in
Lovran
and
its
surroundings. It’s a unique opportunity to try
different dishes made with chestnuts, even
various types of delicious cakes. Be sure to
check it out!

NJOKI (Gnocchi) – essentially an Italian
specialty, but as you will notice, Croatian
cuisine
is
a mixture
of
Italian,
Austro-
Hungarian and Turkish cuisine. Njoki are soft
dumplings made of potatoes. You can try them
in Index with a meat or tomato sauce.
BUZARA – this is a must-try while you’re in
Croatia. It’s a simple yet delicious seafood
dish, usually made with mussels or scampi,
which are cooked in a wine, garlic and tomato
sauce. You can get it at any decent fish
restaurant and the buzara with mussels isn’t
even very expensive.
FISH – of course, since you will be living on
the Adriatic, you have to try some of the fish
specialties while you’re here. Most restaurants
offer a wide selection of different fish that were
caught that day, so the offer constantly
changes depending on the day’s catch. The
most traditional way of having fish is either
grilled (na žaru) or in a so called brodet
(tomato sauce).

Apart from typical Croatian specialities, you can find food influenced by other cuisines.
You should definitely try:
ĆEVAPČIĆI/ ĆEVAPI
is a grilled dish of
minced meat, usually served of 5–10 pieces
on a plate or in a flatbread often with chopped
onions, ajvar (a kind of bell pepper and
aubergine relish) and kajmak (a kind of fatty,
yet delicious cheese). You can try them in
Index, or other grill restaurants that are
famous for great čevapćići such as Boćarija in
Opatija or Batista in Zamet.
BUREK is a Balkan speciality and it is
essentially a kind of baked or fried puff pastry
filled with a delicious cheese, meat, potato or
even apple filling. It is a staple in Croatian
bakeries (pekara) that you can find almost on
every corner. There are also other varieties of
burek with spinach, pizza filling etc. The most
famous place to have a burek in Rijeka is
probably “Burek kod Braće”, close to Jelačić
Square, next to Kosi Toranj (the Leaning
Tower).
SARMA - minced meat mixed with rice rolled
in cabbage leaves. You can sometimes find it
on the menu in Index, but the best sarma is
usually homemade, so invite yourself over for
dinner with your Croatian buddy. 

AJVAR - a type of relish, made principally from
red bell peppers, with garlic. It is most
commonly served with to čevapčići or other
grilled meat.
LOCAL DRINKS
CEDEVITA – refreshing instant drink or tea,
full of vitamins and quite refreshing in the
summer. You can buy it in shops or order it in
cafés.
LOCAL BEER
KARLOVAČKO, OŽUJSKO, TOMISLAV (DARK BEER), LAŠKO, PAN. VELEBITSKO PIVO
(beer from the Velebit mountains) is quite hard to find, but if you happen to be in a bar or
café where they serve it you should definitely try it – it’s quite possibly the best Croatian beer
there is.

If you ask people in Rijeka where you could eat the best burgers you will definitely get the
same answer from everyone: Archie’s. As FTHM students you have a great advantage and
you can easily reach this place as it is located only a few meters from the Faculty, in Ika.
There’s nothing like eating a perfect burger while looking at the Adriatic sea. The prices are
more than reasonable: 17 KN for a cheeseburger (and believe me, it’s big).

RIJEKA CARNIVAL
If you are a student during the winter
semester,
you
are
extremely
lucky
because you will be able to see and
maybe even participate in the Rijeka
Carnival, which is the 3rd largest of its kind
in the world! It lasts for approximately 4
weeks starting in February/January. The
main event is the International Carnival
Parade which lasts the whole day and
attracts visitors from all parts of Croatia as
well as neighbouring countries. It is preceded by many events, exhibitions and the lovely
Children’s Parade a week before the main parade. In 2013, 8,500 people participated in the
main parade, in 100 different carnival groups. Even ESN Rijeka had its own group - both
Erasmus and Croatian students dressed up in colourful costumes and performed a dance
show.

FIUMANKA
Every June many people, not only from Croatia, but also from all parts of Europe, flock to
Rijeka in order to take part in this famous boat race. The whole event lasts for 3 days and
apart from sport events there are also concerts and ship/sailing exhibitions and shows. The
main international race is on Saturday and starts from Rijeka harbour. The boats form a
spectacular view, which you can admire for example from the Molo Longo pier.

MARUNADA
Lovran and its surrounding area is known for
maruni – a special rare sort of chestnut which
grows only in this part of Croatia, specifically in the
area that from Ika to Mošćenicka Draga. Marunada
is a traditional sweet chestnut festival, which takes
place every year in October. It is dedicated to
chestnuts and products made from them - roasted
chestnuts,
cakes,
pancakes,
chestnut
puree,
chestnut goulash, chestnut pie and other. It’s a
great opportunity to try something new and enjoy
the lively atmosphere.

UČKA NATURE PARK
The Opatija Riviera is dominated by
high mountains, which helps create a
magnificent
landscape.
The
Učka
Nature Park encompasses Mount Učka
and a part of the Ćićarija mountain
range. It is located right where Istria
meets the continental part of Croatia.
The peak Vojak is the highest point of
the
Istrian
Peninsula.
There
are
numerous hiking and bicycle routes
and countless beautiful places in the Učka Nature Park.

VOJAK
Vojak is the highest peak in Učka Nature
Park, as well as the highest peak on the
Istrian Peninsula, rising 1,401 metres above
sea level.
At the top there is a tower, built in 1911, from
which you can benefit from the mountain's
wonderful panoramic views of Istria, the
Kvarner Bay with the islands, the mountains
in the Gorski Kotar area, Mount Velebit,

the Alps, and Italy. The tower contains an information office, a souvenir shop and an
observation deck equipped with telescopes with which you can zoom in on the magnificent
views of the surrounding landscapes.
How to get there? On Sundays, Učka Nature Park, or more precisely Poklon pass, can be
reached from Opatija (Slatina bus stop) by the bus line no.34. The journey takes ca. one
hour.

From Poklon you should follow the trail to Vojak for around 1h 30 minutes. Prepare yourself
for a hard hike, but take comfort in the fact that the view from the top will make all your effort
worthwhile. There are other routes that lead to Vojak, however the abovementioned one is
the most convenient and the shortest one. For those of you who are not passionate hikers,
there is also a possibility to access Vojak by car.
PARAGLIDING / HANG-GLIDING
If you would like to try paragliding/hang-gliding,
Učka Nature Park is a perfect spot for this. Two
take-off ramps and one landing area are
located on the plain of Boljunsko polje At Vojak

LOVRANSKA DRAGA
Lovranska Draga, located on the eastern slopes of Mount Učka, is a picturesque little village
with valuable landscape. When you enter the village, the first thing you notice is the small

baroque church of St. Michael. The tiny, scattered houses of Lovranska Draga are connected
by a network of ancient paths. A stream flows through the village, locally called Potok (which
means stream or brook in Croatian), which then flows into the sea in Medveja. The most
interesting part of this stream is its waterfall, one of the most beautiful ones in Učka Nature
Park. If you want to reach it, you have to follow the trail marked Slap (which means waterfall
in Croatian). It takes about 20 minutes of walking to get there.
From Lovranska Draga you can climb uphill to reach one of the peaks of the Učka Nature
Park – just follow the appropriate signs.
How to get there? From Lovran (bus stop near the main market), you need the bus no. 36.
TREBIŠĆA
On the eastern slopes of the Mount Učka, above the beautiful beach in Mošćenička Draga
and under the Perun peak, lies the mysterious hamlet Trebišća. It is hidden deep in the
green shades of a canyon created by a local stream, Potok. The reason why this little village
was founded in this inaccessible valley, where the sun hardly ever shines in winter, can be
traced back to the ruins of the local mill. There is a legend that this mysterious place was a
site linked with many sacred beliefs of the first Slavic settlers in the Kvarner region. The trail
Trebišća – Perun leads to Trebišća. After around 4 kilometres (1 hour of walking from

Mošćenička Draga), you will reach the small abandoned village. The whole trail is 13 km long
and can be a full day hike, lasting 7h, beginning and ending in Mošćenička Draga. It passes
through unspoilt nature and villages, through canyons and climbs to the plateau Petrebišća,
and then on top of Perun (880 m). Besides historical and mythical dimensions of the area, it
shows the natural beauty of local landscapes and the traditional life of the people of this
region.
How to get there? Take the bus no. 32 to Mošćenička Draga. Go back to the roundabout and
then continue with the mythology trail marked with special signs.

Trebišća – Perun
GORSKI KOTAR
Gorski Kotar is a karst plateau with an average elevation of 700 m to 900 m. From the
plateau, mountains rise to over 1,500 m. The highest point is Bjelolasica at 1534 m followed
by Risnjak at 1528 m. This region boasts forests full of animals and unspoilt nature, fresh air
and amazing landscapes. It is a perfect place for outdoor activities such as hiking and
cycling. Because 63% of its surface is forested, it is often called the green lungs of Croatia.
As it is a mountainous area, here you can experience a real winter. Those who miss real
snow (in Rijeka it occurs very rarely, only 3 days per year), should definitely visit the area of

Gorski kotar and enjoy winter landscapes. It is possible to rent a house for a couple of days
in one of the villages.
FUŽINE
Fužine is a small town, lying 730 m above
sea level. It is surrounded by mountains and
there are several reasons to visit this place.
First of all, there are three artificial lakes:
Bajer, Lepenica and Potkoš, beautifully
situated in the mountainous landscape. You
can walk along the lakes and breath the
fresh mountain air.

in
the
1950’s
during
the
construction of lake Bajer, the cave Vrela
was accidentally discovered, which is 3,5 to
4 million years old. It is open for visitors and
with a surface of 300 meters it offers the
opportunity

to

special characteristic of this cave is that it is
the only cave in Croatia through which
underground water flows. At app. 50m there
is a beautiful mountain spring, lake and chasm. Because of its beauty and attractiveness, it is
often called ‘Small Postojna’. In 1998 the cave was adapted for visitors. Owing to the mild
terrain without any steps, it is the single tourist-adapted cave in Europe that can be visited by
guests of all ages, and even those in a wheelchair. The entrance fee is 30 KN and the
sightseeing takes about 15 – 20 minutes. In high season (from June 15th to September 1st)
the cave is open for visitors throughout the day. Out of season it is open on Saturdays and
Sundays, but group visits can be organized during the week if arranged beforehand (call the
Tourist Board Fužine +385 51 835 163).

DELNICE
Delnice is the administrative centre of Gorski Kotar, situated in Delničko Polje (valley) and
surrounded by the hills Drgomalj, Petehovac and Japlenški Vrh. An interesting fact about
Delnice is that, at an elevation of 698 m, it is also the highest town in Croatia.

The ski resort of Platak, located only about 10 kilometres from Rijeka, offers alpine skiing
and abundant snow during winter months. In addition to skiing, it offers a spectacular view of

The closest national park is the NP Risnjak, which is located 50 kilometers from the sea. The
highest point is Veliki Risnjak (1528). With over thirty specific plant communities,

it represents a special attraction and value of Kvarner and Gorski Kotar - a large, heavily
forested, karst plateau rising to jagged peaks.

RIJEKA
HISTORY OF THE CITY
The history of the city dates back to prehistoric periods, when Rijeka Bay was dominated by
the castle settlements built by Liburnians. Afterwards in the 13th century, the city was under
Roman rule. Numerous archaeological findings (the foundations of the Roman walls, the
walls of buildings, the remains of the Roman baths, Roman doors) are proof of the urban
level of Roman Tarsatica. In 14th century, a powerful Croatian family from Krk island, later
named Frankopan, extended their power to the mainland. Their influence can be seen
everywhere around Rijeka, especially in fortifications and many churches built on the
coastline.
Considerable economic development began in 16th century. At that time, the
settlement on the left bank of the Rječina River, below Trsat did not yet exist (Sušak) – it was
only formed in 18th century. Under the rule of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy Rijeka became
Europe’s eighth port. In the passage from 18th to 19th century, Rijeka was under French
administration and then under Austria again. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
in 1918, Rijeka and Sušak became part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, but it
was soon occupied by the Kingdom of Italy.
What is significant for Rijeka’s history
is the fact that the city was under the
occupation
of
numerous
monarchies
-
Roman, Austro-Hungarian, French, Italian,
Yugoslavian.
Therefore,
even
today
multicultural influences are visible in the
architecture, cuisine, religion. Rijeka changed
its rulers seven times from 1913 to today so
an average citizen born at the beginning of the 20th century lived in 7 different states without
leaving the town. The city achieved its complete affirmation in 1991, as a part of the
Republic of Croatia.

RIJEKA TODAY

The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding (shipyards "3. Maj" and "Viktor
Lenac") and maritime transport. Today, Rijeka is the biggest harbour in Croatia.

Rijeka is called by Italians Fiume (you can notice this name on the road signs).

The Rječina (“big river” in Croatian), a karst river, plays an important role in the life of
Rijeka, because it supplies the town and its surroundings with drinking water.

The Moretto (“morčići”) is a typical motif of Rijeka. It is very popular wear it as
jewellery, especially earrings, broches or pendants and you can buy it at any
jeweller’s.
INTERESTING PLACES IN RIJEKA
KORZO
The main centre of Rijeka is the pedestrian
street called Korzo. The main promenade
and meeting-point for Rijeka citizens is
surrounded by buildings displaying various
styles including Classicism, Historicism,
Secession, and Modernism. It is a spot for
cultural and music events, full of bars and
shops.
OLD TOWN
Through the City Tower located in the central part of Korzo, you enter the old city of Rijeka.
One of the most interesting elements here is the Old Gateway or Roman Arch reminding of
Rijeka’s long history. It was an entrance to the ancient town, on whose ruins medieval Rijeka
was built.

MOLO LONGO
The existing breakwater of the main
port’s pool is famously known as the
“molo longo” thanks to its length of
1,707 m. Today it is used as a
passenger
terminal
promenade
perfect
and
for
coastal
walking
or
running. It is definitely worth a stroll at
sunset.
TRSAT
One of the greatest attractions in Rijeka is
Trsat hill. This is also where you can find
Trsat Castle, which provides a magnificent
view of the city and the surrounding area.
Since it is one of the oldest fortifications on
the
Croatian
Coast,
it
represents
characteristics of early medieval town
construction.
In close proximity to the castle is the Our Lady of Trsat Sanctuary, the largest pilgrimage site
in western Croatia. Also, it was visited by pope John Paul II visited in 2003. There is a very
convenient shortcut leading from Trsat to the centre of Rijeka – these parts of town are
connected by approximately 500 steps. These steps were often used by pilgrims, who
climbed them on their knees! However, if you are ever on Trsat and need to get to the centre
of Rijeka, take the stairs – you will see that they are even quicker than taking the bus.

THE TORPEDO FACTORY
When you pass near the ZTC shopping centre you might notice a striking, spooky building
just next to the sea. Today it is neglected and falling apart, however, it is a meaningful
remnant of the past. Not many people know that the first torpedo in the world was built in
Rijeka. It was the result of cooperation between Ivan Luppis, a retired naval officer, who
came up with the idea of what he called “the coastal saviour” and British engineer, Robert
Whitehead, manager of a steam ship manufacturing company in Rijeka. In 1867, Whitehead
moved from Trieste to Rijeka and founded the first torpedo factory in the world. It expanded
abroad and in time it granted licensed production of torpedoes in England, Italy, America,
Russia, and France. By 1943, the factory reached its peak output of 160 torpedoes a month,
and Rijeka had gained a reputation for high-technology engineering. The production was
ceased in 1966. There are now plans to restore the area and turned it into an industrial
heritage monument. Thanks to the torpedo, Rijeka became famous throughout the world.
The characteristic building by the sea is the torpedo launching ramp, which is really worth
seeing. It is a great possibility to discovery a different side of Rijeka.
How to get there? It is possible to get there with bus nr 8 (direction Torpedo) but it does not
operate frequently. You can get there also starting from ZTC - go down the street near the
church and then just lead your way down through the stairs. You will easily notice the
industrial street Milutina Barača, along which you should continue going west, while looking
for the gate to the small ‘harbour’.

THE PAPER MILL (TVORNICA PAPIRA)
On the banks of the Rječina river, near the city centre,
a disused factory is located. It was founded in 1823 and
produced thousands of tons of fine cigarette paper,
exported all over the world. The factory employed over
1000 people and it was regarded as the most successful
industry in former Yugoslavia and the Austro-Hungarian
empire. In 1991, it was the second largest manufacturer
of cigarette paper in Europe and had won many awards.
Having been devastated by war and economic/political
changes,
the
company
went
bankrupt
in
2002.
Nowadays, it is used as a venue for concerts as well as
a local music festival called ‘Hartera’, held every summer.
THE SUGAR REFINERY (TVORNICA ŠEĆERA)
The sugar refinery was built near Rijeka’s train station in 1754. It supplied the entire Austrian
Empire with sugar. After a fire in 1785, the building was largely rebuilt and turned into
a palace decorated with unusual medallions with Chinese motifs and baroque and rococo
elements. The inside is also exceptionally decorative. The building Palača Benčić is located
on Petra Krešimira IV Street 28.

ISLAMIC CENTER RIJEKA
May, 2013 marked the official opening of the Islamic Center Rijeka, which is only the third
mosque in Croatia. It covers an area of 5,300 square metres and consists of four storeys with
a large silver mosque, offices of the Rijeka Islamic Community Majlis, a conference centre,

a multi-purpose hall, a restaurant, community premises, flats and an underground car park.

Out of Croatia’s 63,000 Muslims, around 10,000 live in the Rijeka region.
How to get there? The centre is located at Ante Mandića Street 50. You can take bus nr 7A
to the last station and then go down.
VELI VRH
Rijeka is located on a very hilly terrain,
and therefore has many spots where you
can admire the panorama or to enjoy
stunning sunsets. Veli Vrh is a hill located
in the northern part of Rijeka right next to
Drenova. From there you can enjoy
a spectacular view of the Kvarner Bay,
Učka Mountains, Cres and Krk islands as
well as the city of Grobnik on the other
side. It is covered with trees and is a nice
place to relax from the city’s hustle and
bustle.

How to get there? First, you need to take the bus no. 5 from Rijeka to Drenova and exit at the
second to last bus stop. Then take the first street right (Žminjska) and when you reach the
end turn right again. You have to find the church ‘Marije Karmelske’. Naturally, friendly
strangers will also gladly help you find your way. Standing in front of the church, you will
notice a street on the left site. This is the path to Veli Vrh so just continue on it right to the
top. While hiking towards the peak you will pass a cemetery.
RJEČINA RIVER CANYON
Rijeka hides a lot of mysterious places off the beaten track, undiscovered by tourists but
absolutely worth exploring. One of such attractions is the Rječina river canyon, which lies in
the northern part of the city, behind the Trsat hill. It hides a special, forgotten place – the
Grain Mill Žaklj. It was the biggest industrial mill in Rijeka, which started its activity in 1841.
After the fire in 1862, it was rebuilt and enlarged to a building with 6 floors, 90 meters long
and 25 meters wide. The production lasted till 1894. Afterwards, the mill was supposed to be
transformed into a beer factory but an unstable political situation in the region thwarted these
plans and it started to decay. Today it is a trace of the past, a romantic ruin with high, ivycovered, stone walls.
How to get there? A marked walking path, called "Šetnica uz Rječinu"
(the Promenade along the Rječina River), leads through the canyon,
starting from Trsat to the river’s source. From Rijeka you should walk
along Franje Račkog Street until you reach a small tunnel (Banska
Vrata). Shortly after that, there will be a red sign pointing the way. After
20 minutes of walking along the path, you should reach this mysterious place.

MUSEUMS
THE MARITIME AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF THE CROATIAN COAST
The museum was placed in the neo-Renaissance Governor's Palace, which was built at the
end of the XIX century. It contains a maritime, cultural and historical, ethnographical and
archaeological department. Part of the exhibits of original pieces from the Governor’s palace
are displayed in lounges, including the furniture and objects from the Renaissance to
Historicism as well as a collection of portraits of Rijeka’s most notable citizens

PEEK & POKE MUSEUM OF INFORMATICS AND TECHNOLOGY

AROUND RIJEKA
Rijeka itself offers many interesting places to visit but it is also surrounded by various smaller
places, which have not yet been discovered by most tourists but which offer beautiful
landscapes, unspoilt nature, historic monuments or simply unique atmospheres. One of the
good things about having a bus card that is valid to the 4th zone is that it enables you to
reach all this places by taking suburban buses from Rijeka, without having to pay extra for
the bus ticket.
OPATIJA
More than a hundred years ago, the Opatija
Riviera was regarded as one of the most
attractive
destinations
Hungarian
Monarchy,
of
the
visited
by
Austromany
famous people – royalty, noblemen, artists.
In 1889, it was officially proclaimed the first
health resort on the Adriatic.
Opatija is a significant place for Croatian tourism with almost 170 years of tourism tradition.
The first tourism facility on the eastern coast of the Adriatic is the still existing ‘Hotel Kvarner’
in Opatija. One of the most interesting sites is Park Angiolina with Villa Angiolina, constructed

in 1844, the year that marked the begging of tourism in the city. Many beautiful villas that
were built in the XIX century are preserved until today. The symbol of Opatija is the Girl with
the Seagull – a characteristic sculpture located by the shore.
The Croatian Museum of Tourism in Opatija is located in the Villa Angiolina, in the central
city park. One of its primary tasks is to gather information about all relevant sources and
potential museum exhibits significant for the history of Croatian tourism.
Advice: Out of season, the entrance is free. You can buy a set of old postcards for 20 KN,
which makes a nice souvenir or present.
LOVRAN
In the Middle Ages Lovran was known as a town of sailors, fishermen and merchants.
The city boasts with numerous historic villas, parks and a small, interesting old town with
a charming atmosphere. This is also where the Lungomare promenade ends. Lovran is the
venue for many events: Marunada in October, the Wild Asparagus Festival in April and
Cherry Days in June.
How to get there? Bus no. 32 (direction Lovran)
LUNGOMARE

Its

length
is
approximately 12 kilometres. It is

MATULJI
Matulji is a small municipality above the Opatija Riviera, mostly famous for having the best
cakes in the area. The café where you can buy them is called BETO and is located close to
the bus stop. The price is reasonable - 12 KN for one quite big piece and the choice is really
wide.
The most popular cake is Ferrero, which you should
definitely try. If you are looking for a birthday cake for
your friend, it is possible to order it there for 120KN.
How to get there? Bus no. 22, 23, 28 or 30 from
Rijeka
MOŠĆENICE
On
a
hill,
two
kilometres
from
Mošćenička Draga, at 173 meters
above sea level, lies a small village –
Mošćenice. The town is situated in the
same place as a historical settlement of
the Illyrian tribe Liburnia. It is famous for
its medieval architecture. The main
attraction is Mošćenički toš - olive mill,
more than 300 years old. Due to the
breathtaking views over the entire Kvarner Bay, Mošćenice is a favourite destination for
numerous tourists, as well as a starting point for hikers and mountaineers on their way up the
hiking trails to the old, abandoned villages on Učka Mountain.
How to get there? Bus no. 32 ( see HOW TO READ THE BUS SCHEDULE) or by walking for
2 kilometres uphill from Mošćenička Draga. There are also stairs that lead downhill (or uphill,
if you are in good shape) from Mošćenice to Mošćenička Draga. The walk downhill takes
between 15-20 minutes.

BRSEČ
The beach in Brseč is thought to be the
most beautiful beach in the area, but at
the same time it is quite hard to reach.
The town itself is perched on top of a
hill, it has a very peaceful atmosphere
and many examples of beautiful stone
buildings.
How to get there? You should take the bus no. 32 from Rijeka (see HOW TO READ THE
BUS SCHEDULE? )
Below you can see the schedule of the no. 32 line bus. The times marked red are the ones to
Brseč. As you can see, buses are very rare and it takes more than one hour to get there from
Rijeka. To reach the beach, you need to turn the right near the information board, before
entering the city. The best thing to do would be to take the 10:20 bus from Rijeka which is in
Brseč at 11:35 and to come back with the one at 14:20.

KASTAV
Located on a hill overlooking Kvarner Bay, Kastav is
a great place to admire the surrounding area and to
enjoy the breathtaking sunset. It is a charming,
medieval city with old, narrow streets, and a fortress
and a castle at the top. Kastav hosts many events,
festivals and concerts throughout the year. Most
famously, perhaps, it is popular for the Kastav
Culture Summer and for the young wine festival
Bela Nedeja (first weekend in October).

BAKAR
Bakar is one of the oldest cities on the Northern
Adriatic.
Here
the
Mediterranean
Sea
penetrated most deeply into the European land
and shaped one of the most protected bays on
the eastern (Croatian) coast of the Adriatic Sea.
There are several monuments – the Turkish
House, old churches and the Frankopan castle.
Hotel Jadran in Bakar is one of the oldest
hotels in Croatia. The city is peaceful but the
wind can be really strong.

GROBNIK
North from Rijeka you can find a hidden gem,
the perfect place from which to admire the
mountains of Gorski Kotar. The most prominent
feature of the town of Grobnik is the Frankopan
castle located on the hilltop. Right under the
mountains is the Grobnik circuit, where various
automobile
and
motorcycle
races
are
organized.
How to get there? Bus no. 12 or 14 from Rijeka (Delta) and then change in the centre of
Čavle to the bus no. 15 to Grobnik. When analyzing the bus schedule you should look for
buses that stop in Čavle, and then 5 minutes later there is another bus that will take you to
Grobnik (see below). For example: if you take the bus at 6:25 from Rijeka, you are in Čavle
at 6:40. At 6:45 you will take the bus that runs from Čavle to Grobnik. Take into account that
buses are quite rare.

KRALJEVICA
South from Rijeka is where you will find the peaceful town of Kraljevica. Two medieval
castles belonging to the Croatian nobles Frankopan and Zrinski are the main attractions of
the town.

LIVING IN CROATIA - USEFUL INFORMATION
You can drink the tap water without any concerns, it is of excellent quality.
There is free WiFi Internet in some parts of the city, e.g. Rijeka centre, swimming pool
Kantrida, the Astronomy Centre.
Post offices are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturdays until 1 p.m. There’s a post
office in Rijeka (Pošta 2) open 24 hours a day, at Krešimirova Street 7, near the train station.
Stamps are sold in post offices and at newsstands.
Advice: If someone from your country sends you a package, they should write on it
‘POKLON’

ENGLISH – CROATIAN SURVIVAL DICTIONARY
Croatian as a language is quite easy to understand or learn for people from Central and
Eastern Europe – Czech, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Slovakian. If you are not one of them –
don’t worry! We prepared a mini dictionary for you, which will help you survive in Croatia and
will enable you to communicate more easily with local people in shops, in the canteen or the
city centre.
Advice: In Croatian you read words as they are written (unlike English), this means that one
letter = one sound. There are some strange letters in the alphabet but you can easily get the
hang of it if you ask a Croatian person to explain what they should sound like and how you
