Xperience Xceed - Xceed Financial Credit Union
annual report Xperience Xceed Federally insured by NCUA. A MESSAGE from the board chair For many Xceed members, 2015 was a year to invest in a new home or new car, and we’re honored they turned to their Credit Union for guidance and competitive financing. Likewise, it was a year of investment in the future for the Credit Union. We have built a best-in-class lending operation, capable of meeting every member need – from a young member’s first car loan or dream home mortgage, through to business loans and even multifamily commercial real estate loans. Our retooled Xceed Wealth Management Group represents a phenomenal value for members – both experienced investors with large portfolios, and those just starting out. We have begun converting all of our credit and check cards to the higher-security EMV chip cards. This is costly, but a must for protecting member security. And, with our newly-upgraded Xceed Xperience Center video banking platform, members now have convenience and access that eclipses some of the nation’s largest banks. These investments had the short-term effect of dampening our profitability. However, we remain solid financially and we are confident in the returns we’ll see in the coming year. Importantly, these enhancements position our Credit Union positively for the future — helping to keep the experience of being an Xceed Financial member the most unique and rewarding banking experience available. On behalf of your volunteer Board of Directors, I want to thank you for your membership and your confidence in our stewardship. Dennis Ruffner Board Chair 1 A MESSAGE from the president & chief executive After spending much of the previous year celebrating our long-time association with Xerox Corporation, and setting records almost monthly for growth in member savings and loans, 2015 was a year when we focused very sharply on the Xceed experience for members. We know you choose to do your banking with us because the Credit Union offers you something special and very different from what the big banks are selling. As an Xceed member, this is – literally – your credit union. We exist only because you have made the choice to be an owner in this not-for-profit financial cooperative, instead of a bank’s customer. So our investments this year were all about making your experiences with us as rewarding, convenient, and dare-we-say — fun — as they possibly can be! On the product side, we made sure you had your choice of high-value savings options, competitive loans, and quality investment and insurance services – always delivered by friendly and knowledgeable associates, whose primary goal is to help you choose exactly the right accounts for your individual situation. We engaged members with fun and informative financial education on our social media pages, online webinars, and in-person seminars we hosted at workplaces and Xceed Financial Centers. We also updated our Xceed Xperience Center facilities and debuted an all-new website, making it easier and more intuitive for members to find information they’re seeking. And, we revealed a bold new look for the Xceed Financial brand. Unlike some banks, which seek to maximize profits for shareholders, our credit union makes decisions based on our members’ best interest over the long term. In 2015, that led us to make a number of strategic investments – some of them costly – which impacted our bottom line. However, your Credit Union remains fiscally strong and on track for a positive 2016. Importantly, we invested in Xceed’s future by instituting a host of operational enhancements. The work we’ve done to build up our infrastructure, business lines, and systems is largely not visible to members, but these things make a huge difference in the Credit Union’s efficiency and our ability to deliver extraordinary member service. Plus, as a well-capitalized and conservatively-managed financial institution, we took the opportunity to beef up the loan loss reserves we set aside for rainy days. As you read this report and recall the many ways we’ve been at work for you, I hope that Xceed Financial’s commitment to you and your family’s financial well-being – now and in the future – comes through loud and clear. We want you to know that we value your business, and we hope you’ll be sure to let us know if there’s ever anything we can do to improve your experience with us. Teresa Y. Freeborn President & Chief Executive 2 SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT The Supervisory Committee, a group of appointed volunteers, is primarily responsible for overseeing the overall safety and soundness of Xceed Financial, as well as the credit union’s adherence to operating policies and procedures. Each year, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that your credit union is financially stable and maintains the highest member service standards possible. The Supervisory Committee annually conducts a number of on-site audits of Financial Centers and other credit union areas. Additionally, we review member account records to verify their accuracy and oversee the audit performed by our independent auditing firm, Moss Adams LLP, Certified Public Accountants. As a result of these combined efforts, I am proud to report that Xceed Financial Credit Union and its assets remain financially sound and secure. Gretchen G. Valentine Supervisory Committee Chair 3 XPERIENCE THE FUTURE OF BANKING Built to make your life easier. So there you were, hanging out at the beach, when you decided it was time to refi your car. With your smart phone, you were able to get the ball rolling – video chatting with an Xceed Xperience Center associate… waves crashing in the background. We’re pretty sure that’s the official definition of awesomesauce! And this year, we looked for every opportunity to use technology to provide members with that special combination of convenience and personal service that distinguishes the Xceed Xperience. Xperience Center With this video banking innovation now accessible from desktop computers, tablets, or smart phones, we focused on enhancing the facilities at Financial Centers. We updated the Xperience Center spaces, adding a convenient new Xpress button for members to connect quickly with an Xperience Center associate — using one screen for face-to-face engagement, another for the associate to share information, and an attached workstation for printing documents. Xceed Online Banking Throughout 2015, we added features and upgrades to make Xceed Online better than ever, including the ability to manage your Xceed Visa credit card, obtain tax documents for your mortgage loan, open a new account with no paper required, and toggle back and forth between English and Spanish. Mobile Deposit Use of the Xceed Mobile banking app was way up – in part due to popular features like mobile deposit that allow members to use their smart phones to snap a photo of a paper check and deposit it with just a few clicks. Apple Watch® & Apple Pay® We teamed up with Apple in 2015 to support the Apple Watch, a.k.a. the coolest way ever to check your balances, locate surcharge-free ATMs, and more. Plus, you can also now use Apple Pay with your Xceed Visa credit card and/or check card. 4 Loans for EVERY STAGE OF YOUR LIFE Financing the things that matter most. Think about your life’s experiences, and the occasions that really stand out – buying a first car, moving into a dream home, taking the trip of a lifetime, opening a new business. For many Xceed members, the common thread is the support of the Credit Union – in 2015, and over a lifetime. Home Mortgages With our comprehensive range of loans at competitive rates, we have mortgage loans to serve virtually every member need. This past summer, we brought the Xceed lending experience home-sweet-home, offering $250 off closing costs to members with a first mortgage at another lender who refinanced with us. Auto Loans The car-owning experience should be fun, and a sky-high payment is, well, not fun. So we invited members to bring us their loans from other lenders and take our Beat Your Rate program for a spin. Hundreds of members took us up on the offer, driving away with a lower payment. We also worked with our partner, Enterprise Car Sales, on blow-out sales events that enabled members to pair the purchase of a quality used car with a low-rate Xceed auto loan. Business Loans Lots of Xceed members let their entrepreneur flags fly in 2015, and we were right there backing them up with SBA loans, commercial real estate loans, and more – going above and beyond to invest in our communities and do our part to help power America’s small business economy. 5 Accounts to BUILD A BETTER FUTURE Rewarding savings and credit card promotions. Xceed’s Visa® credit cards are a super deal, with competitive finance rates, plus the option of a fantastic rewards program. And our certificates are a great way to save up – for the future, or for a little (or big!) something special. This year, members got their choice of accounts and promotions to make their money work harder than ever. Balance Transfer Promotions Offering a low introductory rate of just 1.99% and no balance transfer fees, our 2015 balance transfer promotions enabled members to ditch their high rate credit cards and make the switch to the low-cost, high-reward Xceed Visa. It was an epic win for hundreds of members struggling to manage debt. Swipe for Summer Members who select “credit” and sign for their Xceed check card purchases enjoy more benefits — like Visa’s Zero Liability protection — than when they choose “debit.” With our Swipe for Summer Sweepstakes, each time members swiped their cards, selected credit, and signed for their purchases, they were entered into the sweepstakes. One lucky member snagged a $1,000 grand prize! EMV Chip Cards In recent years, a lot of merchants have done a less-than-stellar job of protecting customers’ card information, so card issuers like Xceed have taken the lead on security. In 2015, we began rolling out new high-security EMV chip credit cards that make fraud much more difficult. Three cheers for the white hats! Share Certificates Throughout the year, we provided a variety of certificates, with a range of terms for different member needs. Among the most popular was our new Variable Rate share certificate and IRA certificate — ideal for members who like the security of a certificate, but don’t want to miss out if Treasury Rates go up. 6 XCEED WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP We’re here for you and yours. For some years now, Xceed Financial members have had access to quality investment services to help them plan for retirement and other financial goals. In 2015, the Credit Union stepped up these capabilities in a very big way. We retooled our operation with new technology, including secure Personal Financial Websites that make it a snap for members to track their portfolios’ performance anytime, from anywhere using a mobile device or internet-connected computer. We also brought on exceptionally strong new Financial Consultants, with a depth of experience, to serve members in a wide range of specialties, including: • Retirement Planning • Investment Management • Estate Planning & Wealth Transfer • Education Planning • Cash Management • Risk Management • Portfolio Assessment To reflect this new breadth of capabilities, in 2015 we changed the team’s name to Xceed Wealth Management Group and created a new microsite (www.xceedwealthmanagement.org) that’s linked to the Credit Union’s main xfcu.org website. The Xceed Wealth Management Group site describes all of the ways our experienced Financial Consultants can help individual members and families address the complex challenges of managing and working towards growing their assets. Not NCUA Insured No Credit Union Guarantee May Lose Value 7 Partnering with EMPLOYER GROUPS Sharing a high-value employee benefit in workplaces nationwide. The long-standing relationships we have with our employer partners are fundamental to Xceed’s identity as a workplace credit union. We’re proud to partner with some of the world’s most respected brands, enhancing their employee compensation packages with Xceed Financial Credit Union membership, at no cost to them. Financial Wellness in the Workplace Throughout the year, we worked closely with our employer partners to offer savings promotions, loan discounts, and other deals created specifically for their employees’ needs. Welcome New Employer Partners Companies that partner with Xceed Financial demonstrate — in a tangible way — that they care about their employees’ financial well-being. That can be a big advantage when trying to attract and keep great talent, so we were thrilled to welcome several new employers to the Xceed family, including GUESS?, INC. (maker of your favorite jeans!). Xerox Diversity Groups Reinforcing our special relationship with Xerox, in 2015 we launched our popular iXceed Fiscal Fitness Challenge for not one, but five, of the company’s affiliated diversity groups. Challenge participants from the Black Women’s Leadership Council (BWLC), GALAXe Pride at Work, Hispanic Association for Professional Advancement (HAPA), National Black Employees Association (NBEA), and The Women’s Alliance (TWA) competed for our largest grand prize ever, $5,000 – earning points by attending monthly webinars, setting and tracking financial goals, and saving and investing to meet their goals. We were also proud supporters of a variety of diversity group events and conferences. 8 Focus on FINANCIAL WELLNESS Your financial well-being is our top priority. In school, when the subject was finances, we were always the kids who sat in the front row soaking up everything “teach” had to share! But we know financial education can make lots of people’s eyes glaze over, so we always try to make it fun for members to boost their financial savvy. Educating Young Members This year, we rolled out two new programs to help our youngest members get off on the right foot financially. Our M3 Money Club, for children between the ages of 7 to 12, features money-managing characters they can identify with, games to teach them about good money habits, and comics and cartoons about smart saving and spending. Our Elements of Money website, for teens 13 to 18, offers tips and lessons about saving for college or their first car, and how to manage money once they have their first job. We also partnered with two other local credit unions to host Bite of Reality – a day-long money management simulation for teens in Southern California. Financial Consultant Seminars Xceed Financial Centers were education central for adult members, who got the low down on loads of important topics like Social Security, Understanding Your Employer Retirement Plan, College Planning, Estate Planning, and Long Term Care. America Saves Week We were proud to join with hundreds of nonprofit organizations and government entities in the annual America Saves Week campaign in February, hosting a series of free webinars to help members better management their budgets, understand their spending styles, and revamp their financial pictures. Social Media Throughout 2015, we used our Facebook and Twitter pages to share quick tips for saving money, shaping up finances, and achieving money goals with our ongoing Money Monday and Financial Friday posts. #letsallgetrich 9 PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE Going above and beyond in the communities we serve. One of the things members tell us really makes Xceed membership different (and special!) is that we’re for people, not for profit. Of course, that comes through in the awesome deals members get on loans and the other products and services we offer. But it’s also front-and-center in our service to the communities where we do business. Super Healer Award We couldn’t have been more proud when Heal the Bay, an Xceed select employer group and community organization partner, honored us with the 2015 Super Healer Award. It’s their highest volunteer/donor honor, given in recognition for our support of the staff’s financial wellness, as well as the thousands of dollars contributed in connection with memberships. Supporting Higher Education Since we created the Romeo Doty Scholarship program to honor one of the Credit Union’s most dedicated volunteers, Xceed has given out thousands of dollars to help young members pursue their college dreams. This year, we awarded ten $1,000 scholarships to students in New York, New Jersey, and California. Plus, a young member in Texas received our first Chairman’s Xcellence Award – a $1,000 scholarship earmarked for the son or daughter of an Xceed associate. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Throughout the year, we found lots of ways to support CMN Hospitals, our charity of choice. Team Xceed took to the streets of California’s capital city, raising more than $10,000 in the Credit Union SacTown 10 race – more than any other credit union team! We also celebrated International Credit Union Day with our Shop for Miracles Campaign – for every signature-based credit or check card transaction members completed on that day, we donated a quarter to CMN. 10 FINANCIALS 2015 Financial Statements CONSOLIDATED STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL CONDITION CONSOLIDATED STATEMENT OF INCOME As of December 31, 2015 For the year ending December 31, 2015 ASSETS Net Loans Cash Total Investments Other Assets INTEREST INCOME Total Interest on Loans Total Interest on Investments TOTAL ASSETS LIABILITIES & EQUITY LIABILITIES Notes Payable Other Liabilities Members’ Shares $ $ 942,018,790 $ TOTAL INTEREST INCOME 30,107,579 882,977 30,990,556 INTEREST EXPENSE Total Dividends on Members’ Shares Other Interest Expense 4,982,221 920,962 TOTAL INTEREST EXPENSE 5,903,183 80,500,000 9,938,174 772,410,970 NET INTEREST INCOME Provision for Loan Losses 25,087,373 4,335,588 TOTAL LIABILITIES 862,849,144 NET INTEREST INCOME AFTER PROVISION 20,751,785 MEMBERS’ EQUITY 79,169,646 TOTAL LIABILITIES & EQUITY $ 776,751,374 79,901,712 13,418,742 71,946,962 $ TOTAL NON-INTEREST INCOME 12,241,013 942,018,790 NON-INTEREST EXPENSE Salaries and Benefits Other Expenses 16,026,451 18,475,342 TOTAL NON-INTEREST EXPENSE 34,501,793 NET LOSS $ (1,508,995) For the independent auditor’s report and opinion, please contact us at 800.XFCU.222.
