George Foster`s catalog
Sculptures by George Foster T he following numbered polished bronze and silver sculptures are exact enlargements from actual exotic insect specimens. These are signed by the artist George Foster who has cast them in his fine art foundry using the “lost wax” process. Numbers correspond to catalogue photographs. Measurements are to the nearest 1/2 inch or centimeter. The bronzes are, unless otherwise requested, surface treated with a thin protective coating to prevent tarnishing and to preserve the original look of freshly polished metal. This intact collection is intended for acquisition by a museum, university, or a company which might enjoy the prestige of showcasing a unique bridge between the natural sciences and fine art traditions. Contact the artist for availability of individual pieces. 1 Trichogomphus bronchus (Borneo) Bronze, 28 in. or 71 cm 2 Lucanus formosanus (Taiwan) Bronze, 33 in. or 84 cm 3 Allomyrhina dichotomus, antelope beetle (China) Bronze 25 in. or 64 cm 4 5 6 8 10 7 9 11 12 14 13 16 17 15 18 23 19 22 21 20 26 24 28 25 27 31 29 30 32 33 34 36 35 37 38 40 39 41 42 43 44 52 53 50 51 56 58 57 55 54 61 60 59 72 71 70 73 74 75 79 76 80 77 81 78 82 1 Trichogomphus bronchus (Borneo) Bronze, 28 in. or 71 cm 2 Lucanus formosanus (Taiwan) Bronze, 33 in. or 84 cm 14 Trachelophorus male (Madagascar) Bronze, 6.5 in. or 17 cm Half mirror mounted* 15 Odontolabis gazella (Borneo) Bronze, 13.5 in. or 35 cm 3 Allomyrhina dichotomus, antelope beetle (for wall or table, no detail on underside) (China) 16 Tricondyla aptera (Solomon Islands) Bronze 25 in. or 64 cm Bronze, 13.5 in. or 35 cm 4 Cicadina sp. cicada (Malaysia) 17 Mantodea sp., leaf mantid Bronze, 35 in. or 89 cm Bronze, 13.5 in. or 35 cm 5 Odonata sp., dragonfly (Quebec) Bronze, 20 in. or 51 cm (wingspan) 6 Megacerous jason (South America) Bronze, 16 in. or 41 cm 7 Trachelophorus giraffa male (large) (Madagascar) Bronze, 23 in. or 58 cm Laminated wood base, articulating head, antenae 8 Glyphoderus centralis (Argentina) Bronze, 17 in. or 43 cm 9 Eupatorus gracilicornis, graceful horned scarab (Vietnam) Bronze, 19.5 in. or 49 cm 18 Cecropia, caterpillar N.A. silk moth (Quebec) Bronze, 11.5 in. or 30 cm 29 Lucanus cervis, European stag beetle (Italy) Bronze, 9.5 in. or 24 cm 30 Belostomatidae sp., water bug (South America) Bronze, 12.5 in. or 32 cm No detail on underside 31 Goliathus regius at rest (Africa) Bronze, 9 in. or 23 cm 19 Mesotopas tarandus (Africa) Bronze, 10 in. 25 cm 32 Goliathus regius in flight (Africa) Bronze, 13 in. or 34 cm (includes a base) 20 Heliocopris dominus male (Thailand) Bronze, 7 in. or 18 cm 33 Taurocerastes patagonicus (Patagonia) Bronze, 4 in. or 10 cm 21 Heliocopris dominus female (Thailand) Bronze, 7 in. or 18 cm 34 Phanaeus lancifer (South America) Bronze, 4 in. or 10 cm 22 Megasoma actaeon (South America) Bronze, 11 in. or 28 cm 35 Scarabaeus sacer (Egypt) Bronze, 4 in. or 10 cm (for wall or table) 23 Chalcosoma atlas (Philippines) Bronze, 11 in. or 28 cm 36 Dorcus titanus (Borneo) Bronze, 7.5 in. or 20 cm (for wall or table) No detail on underside 10 Allotopus moseri (Malaysia) Bronze, 19 in. or 48 cm 24 Archon centaurus (Africa) Bronze, 9 in. or 23 cm 11 Circellium bacchus (South Africa) Bronze, 12 in. or 30 cm 25 Allomyrhina dichotomus smaller (China) Bronze, 9 in. or 23 cm 12 Phanaeus faunus (Brazil) Bronze, 18 in. or 46 cm Half mirror mounted*, frame and plexiglass cover 26 Enema pan (South America) Bronze, 9 in. or 23 cm 13 Lucanus taiwanus (Taiwan) Bronze, 9 in. or 23 cm Half mirror mounted* and plexiglass cover with frame 28 Trachelophorus giraffa female (Madagascar) bronze, 8.5 in. or 21 cm Articulating antenae 27 Trachelophorus giraffa male (Madagascar) Bronze, 14 in. or 36 cm Articulating head, antenae * With the wall-mounted pieces where a front surface mirror reflects the second half of a beetle for example, a mysterious floating effect is produced which a flat photo can scarcely show. 37 Centoniinae sp. Sterling silver, 1.5 in. or 4 cm George Foster has a science degree in chemistry but soon after graduating built a small foundry near Toronto specifically to cast bronze for sculptors. After a move to rural Quebec, he studied art and art history. Now in a larger workshop he enjoys creating his sculptures by welding and casting various metals. Works such as these presented here can be found in government, university, and private collections throughout the world. George Foster is a longtime member of the Sculptors Society of Canada and has done considerable research into fine art bronze casting and moulding techniques. Like the insect bronzes, most of his recent work has offered a window into some aspect of our wild natural world. 2069, chemin Labbé Ayer’s Cliff, Quebec J0B 1CO Canada P.O.
