Guests of Honor
Stephen Erikson
Fantasy Author
Steven Erikson is a New York Times best-selling author of the
fantasy series, “Malazan Book of the Fallen.” In addition, he is
trained as both an archaeologist and anthropologist, something
that adds to his works of fiction and non-fiction. Erikson will
participate in panels throughout the weekend, including Developing
Cultures for Storytellers, and World Deconstruction 101. For his
thesis at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Erikson wrote a “story cycle”
of short stories titled “A Ruin of Feathers” about an archaeologist
in Central America. Subsequently, Erikson received a grant to
finish the work which was published by TSAR, a small Canadian
publishing house. For his next work Erikson co-won the Anvil Press
International 3-Day Novel Contest for which he signed away the
rights, a mistake he attributes to inexperience. Later, upon moving
to England, Erikson sold what he refers to as his “first real novel” to
Hodder and Stoughton, “This River Awakens”. The first four books
were published under Erikson’s real name, and are currently out of
print. He is best-known for his 10-volume series, “Malazan Book of
the Fallen,” which have been met with widespread international
acclaim and established him as a major voice in the world of fantasy
fiction. His first novel in the series, “Gardens of the Moon” (1999),
was well received and was short-listed for a World Fantasy Award.
In addition to writing, Erikson paints using oil paints. He lives in
Winnipeg, Canada.

Todd Lockwood
Illustrator
Todd Lockwood graduated from The
Art Institute of Colorado, in Denver,
Colorado, with the award for “portfolio
par excellence,” and went to work immediately in design and
advertising. Lockwood worked for a design agency for a year and
a half, and won numerous awards in the Art Directors Club of New
York’s annual show. He then focused his career on illustration,
doing freelance illustration for about fifteen years.
After networking at Worldcon, his first science fiction convention,
Lockwood began illustrating cards for Chaosium and Phil Foglio’s
XXXenophile card game, and soon his friend, David Martin,
suggested him to an art director at TSR, the publisher of the popular
role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. In 1997, Wizards of the
Coast acquired TSR and moved Lockwood and his family to
6
Washington state. Working for WotC, he continued to work on the
D&D line and on Magic: The Gathering.
Lockwood produced art for the Ravenloft, Forgotten Realms, and
Dragonlance campaign settings, as well as cover art for novels based
on Forgotten Realms. His work is included in the book, Masters
of Dragonlance Art. Lockwood also became the Vice President of
Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA), which
sponsored the Chesley Awards for fantasy art at the World Science
Fiction Convention. In 1999, he helped redefine the look of the
Dungeons & Dragons game for Third Edition. In 2002, after Hasbro
bought Wizards of the Coast, Lockwood returned to freelancing.
He and his wife and three children reside in Washington state.

Peter Kent
Stunt Double Extraordinaire
Peter Kent is an accomplished Hollywood stuntman, writer, and
movie producer. His career includes 14 years as stunt double (and
friend) to Arnold Schwarzennegger.
Reconstructive surgery after a car accident had altered Peter’s
face so much he began to resemble the Austrian actor. In 1983,
after years of being a jack of all trades, he moved from Vancouver,
Canada to Los Angeles to pursue a film career. His association with
Arnold Schwarzenegger spanned 14 films over 13 years, as friend,
workout partner, ski buddy, confidant, chef and dialogue coach.
His work on 14 of the largest action pictures (Terminator through
Jingle All The Way) carried into his writing career at the suggestions
of producer Joel Silver and directors Walter Hill, James Cameron
and others. He has completed 6 action and comedy scripts and
published his autobiography, Stand Or Fall, Autobiography of a
Stuntman (Anchor Books), while also creating many reality and
scripted TV concepts, which he continues to do.
Returning to Vancouver -- a.k.a. “Hollywood North” -- Peter has
become one of the busiest actor/writer/producer/directors in
town. He wrote, produced and directed his independent short,
“Bombmakers,” founded ARK (Actors Reading for Kids) in honor of
his late mother, Margaret, and guest lectured at schools throughout
the region, as well as teaching “hands-on” experimental film to
Grade 6 and 7 students.
Peter was inducted into the Hollywood Stuntmen Hall of Fame in
2009. Peter is still very much connected with the stunt industry, as
head of his Vancouver-based stunt school - Peter Kent’s School of
Hard Knocks. Check it out on Facebook.

DAW Books
Science Fiction and Fantasy
Publisher
DAW Books is an American science fiction and fantasy publisher,
founded by Donald A. Wollheim and his wife Elsie B Wollheim. The
company is said to be “the first publishing company ever devoted
exclusively to science fiction and fantasy.” The first DAW Book
published was the 1972 short story collection Spell of the Witch
World by Andre Norton.
The company published numerous books by well-respected authors
in the 1970s, including such luminaries as Marion Zimmer Bradley,
Fritz Leiber, Edward Llewellyn, Jerry Pournelle, Roger Zelazny and
many others. In 1982, C. J. Cherryh’s Downbelow Station was the
first DAW book to win the Hugo Award for best novel, which gained
the publishing house increased respect within the industry.
Until July 1984, all DAW books were characterized by yellow spines
and a prominent yellow cover box containing the company’s logo as
well as a chronological publication number. When the design was
changed the chronological number was retained but moved to the
copyright page and renamed the DAW Collectors’ Book Number.
As of October 2010, the company had published more than 1,500
titles during its 38-year history. DAW remains closely held by its
current publishers, Elizabeth R. Wollheim (Donald’s daughter) and
Sheila E. Gilbert. The company’s offices are in New York City.

Tiffany Toland says she was “all but born with a brush
in her hand.” As a child, she always knew she wanted
to be an artist and spent hours painting and drawing to
increase her artistic skills. To this end, she dropped out
of high school to focus more on her artwork, and she
obtained a GED shortly after her sixteenth birthday.
Her work has since been licensed for a variety of
products and has been purchased worldwide.

Robin Walker
Robin learned how to draw while in the sciences
because basic skills and high standards were rarely
taken seriously in art schools, as is still the case today.
Art is generally perceived by art schools and the public
as therapy or a way to socialize while one’s hands are
moving. The art trends of the 20th century have been
seldom more then the sanctification of the inane. Do
get her started on this topic.
Betsy Wollheim
Betsy Wollheim, born in New York, is the daughter of
legendary editor Donald A. Wolheim, and has been
intimately involved with professional SF from an early
age. In 1975 she began work as an associate editor for
DAW Books, which her father founded in 1971. In 1985,
she took over as president of DAW, which she still runs,
with Sheila Gilbert. In 2012, she took home a Hugo
Award for ‘Best Editor, Long Form’ She is married to
musician Peter Stampfel. They have two children, and
live in New York City.

Welcome to MisCon 28!
First, please step inside the perimeter and let me welcome you to MisCon 28!
Second, do you have your biohazard combat suit handy? I hope so. Well, that or a respirator, hand
sanitizer, and some rubber gloves at the very least. I mean, you know--it’s safe inside the perimeter,
and the M28 Virus is, well . . . it’s under control. Our scientists assure me everything will be fine.
I’m sure you’re not infected!
If you’re unclear as to the origins of the M28 Virus, the Resistance and the Illuminati have been
battling in the shadows since MisCon 1, and even though the Resistance fought valiantly at MisCon
27, the Illuminati still managed to unleash an experimental virus upon the convention. After
consulting with scientists, seers, and sages, we learned the M28 Virus had a one year incubation time
and even though we had worried about it reaching outbreak levels this month, it hasn’t.
No, really--everything is fine!
Our mad scientists have spent the past year working on a cure, and while they haven’t been
completely successful, they’ve learned that certain compounds found in Dum Dum suckers can
mitigate the effects of the virus. They assure us they’ll find some way to save us all so we don’t need
to be quarantined at MisCon: 28 Years Later.
Hey, did you hear that? Was it a cough? It sounded like someone was coughing down that hallway. So
anyway, I’m sure everything is going to be just fine, but if you’ll excuse me, I have to get to a panel.
Yeah, that’s right. I need to get going.
Here--have a Dum Dum, be safe, and have a great time. Stay infection free!
Welcome to MisCon 28.

Every year MisCon displays the work of both successful and aspiring artists with
a space, science fiction, fantasy, or alternative reality theme. These wonderous
works are displayed, sold, and auctioned. MisCon sees art as its purest definition:
anything may be considered art. MisCon has never, and will never, restrict the type
of art accepted for the art show and auction (except for reasons of available display
space).
Art may contain adult themes and/or be graphic, and these pieces will not be
hidden. MisCon makes every effort to display adult artwork in a tasteful way so
patrons with small children may self-censor.
Art Show Rules
Costume Pageant
The Costume Pageant will be on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is urged to
come and participate and to cheer their favorite costume entries. The entry form
is available online. The cutoff for registration is Noon on Saturday during the
convention. No late entries will be accepted. Presentations should be limited to 90
seconds. Winners will be announced immediately following the Pageant. Awards and
Prizes will be handed out at that time and you must be present to win.
Prize Categories
Overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place
Art staff are available in the art room at all times, so feel free to ask questions or
make comments. Artists entrust their work to MisCon staff, and MisCon takes this
responsibility seriously, so please:
• Awards are $30, $25, and $20 Cthulhu Cash respectively
•
Do not touch/handle the art.
• $20 Cthulhu Cash
•
No photography, videos, or cell phone snapshots. Those seen doing so will be
asked to delete photos and leave all equipment with staff until the patron is
ready to leave the art room. Repeat offenders will be asked not to return.
Best of MisCon Theme
Youth (age 13 and under)
• $20 Cthulhu Cash - and yes, you can win 1st place and best theme!
Youth Art
Rules
The MisCon Young Artist Show is an art show within the MisCon Art Show where
young artists can display their art - and maybe even sell some!
•
Be on time. This includes the Costume Pageant itself and the mandatory Dress
Rehearsal (see schedule),
The Bidding Process (Silent
Auction)
•
No name tags on your costume (unless you are dressed as a rabid SciFi fan)
•
This is a family event in a public place. Keep it PG-13 (no nudity).
•
Absolutely NO fire, explosives or other hazardous effects, period. If you have
a question about an effect or prop, check it out with Security or the Costume
Director.
•
NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY during the actual contest. There will be an
opportunity to take pictures during the intermission period of the show.
•
Live weapons MUST be peace-bonded and may not be drawn without prior
permission from the Security and Costume department staff.
3 bids...............Goes to Live auction
•
Before the live auction (see below), lists will be posted in the hall to let patrons
know whether each piece of art will be in the auction, the minimum bid price, or
silent auction sale.
Have a routine. This is in addition to the announcement you are having the MC
read for you. (This is part of your score!)
Suggestions
•
Stay in character. How you present yourself is as important as the hours spent
developing your costume.
Art Auction
•
Auction bid paddles will be signed out to auction patrons. Each patron with a
paddle is responsible for all pieces won by that number. Pieces that have a minimum
bid of $350 or more will be left in art room during the auction.
Practice before the contest, especially if you use music or other props. If you
wear glasses, and aren’t Harry Potter, spotters at the stage will be happy to
hold them for you, and help you on and off.
•
When you have won a piece, keep your paddle up until you are
acknowledged by a staff member.
When you first come onto the stage area, show the judges your costume, not
just the audience and be prepared to sell it!
•
A repair kit is handy. You might have to wait longer than anticipated.. Again,
the spotters will be glad to hold it for you during your presentation.
•
Just because it’s black, doesn’t make it a costume.
•
Don’t forget your shoes. Galadriel and her elves didn’t own cowboy boots. A
great costume can be ruined by a lack of attention to details.
Each art piece has a silent bid sheet that lists information about the art, the starting
bid, and the direct sale price. The direct sale price which is only available when no
other bids are made prior to the Art Auction.
Direct Sale Price.......Sold to bidder
0 bids..............Goes to Live auction
1 bid.................sold to bidder
2 bids...............Sold to the highest bidder
Great Hall • Sunday, 6 - ?
Payment & Pickup
•Art may be picked up immediately following the auction and during Art Room
hours. To make a special arrangement, contact Bill Singletary, CthulhuBob
Lovely, or Justin Barba. Any art left in the auction hall will be taken back to the

roaring can be heard. Pathfinders, are you ready? This is

Creating Conflict (Writing)
Costume Contest Prep/
Meeting (Costuming)
When creating a campaign or story for the real past,
how much accurate historical detail is needed? How do
you pull it off effectively? How much is too much?
We all know conflict is the heart of any story, but
how do you create conflict, how much is enough, and
what do you do when you need more conflict? We’ll
also discuss how to find the conflict inherent in your
characters, plot, and setting.
Meet here to get ready for the Costume Pageant. From
this meeting, you will proceed into the Containment
Room for the pageant itself.

All authors are invited. Steven Erikson’s signing is

The Black Death took a terrible toll on Europe through
the middle ages and Renaissance, periodically wiping
out large segments of the population. The repercussions
of widespread disease and death ranged from practical
changes in economic and political situations to more
abstract changes in cultural mindsets and artistic
expression. Reading historical accounts, it’s no surprise
many people caught up in plague outbreaks thought the
Apocalypse was approaching -- or had already arrived!

We’re seeing a plethora of strong female characters

13th Age RPG
13th Age GM: Ash Law
Number of Players: 6
It turns out with 13th Age, you can have your cake and
eat it, too. It is essentially a d20 game fused with storyoriented mechanics usually associated with Dungeon
World or Fate Core, with the excess crunch trimmed.
The result? A lean and mean medium crunch game
which is a blast to play, if you enjoy the play-style the
designers advocate.
A Cold Summer’s Night
Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium Games)
GM: Robert Brazel
Number of Players: 5
The year is 1922. Radio is now broadcasting
commercially, Prohibition is on and women get to vote!
You all live in Arkham, Massachusetts. You all know
famous explorer Walter Hamming Goodman. He lives 20
miles out of town in a very nice house. Six months after
a long trip to Norway, Walter was found dead. You all
knew him in some way and have been summoned for
the reading of his last will at his house. Will you strike it
rich? Or is his death an omen of things to come?
A Curiosity
Call of Cthulhu (Chaosium Games)
GM: CthulhuBob Lovely
Number of Players: 6
The Reign of Victoria has been good for England, a
little too good for the lower classes. Nevertheless,
you still maintain a household staff and carry yourself
with dignity. Still, money cannot insulate you from
boredom. Fortunately, Charles Pendergrass has reemerged. Though no one has seen him for some time,
his spectacles have always been amusing. Now he
has invited you to visit him in the haunted village of
Wookey Hole, near Wells, in Somerset.
No game experience is necessary.
A Face by Any Other Name
Deadlands Noir
GM: John Goff
Number of Players: 5 (characters provided)
The year is 1935, but the history is not our own. In
the Confederacy’s largest city, New Orleans, trouble
comes not only in the form of the notorious Black Hand
gangster, but darker, unnatural menace as well. Track
down clues as a hard-nosed private dick, supernatural
grifter, mysterious voodoo houngan, or slightly
unhinged patent scientist as you work to solve the
latest mystery in the Crescent City. Deadlands Noir uses
the Savage Worlds rules.
A Society of Secrets
Shadow Run, 5th Edition
GM: Marc Johnson
Number of Players: 5
Number of Players: 5
The runs always start off simply; you are to find a
person of low value and unknown to the megacorps.
Deliver him back to Mr. Johnson or provide proof of
the manner of his demise and the Nuyen is yours. To
your amazement, there is even a hazard pay clause.
But who would have guessed that the University of
Washington would have secrets that rival the UCAS or
the Aztechnology Corporation? Secrets held for decades
and long forgotten; secrets worth killing for...
“There are certain discoveries, certain advancements
of science that make us step back and realize that our
world has now changed forever. Pandora’s box has been

And for a brief moment while a few select men stand

That is why I am here. That is my genius. Right now you
