What a wonderful summer we have had, that is until the last few
days of August! We were unlucky enough to have lost power for
some thirty hours after the windstorm so I thought, well, I could cut
out some fabric for a future project. Wrong! I needed to iron the
fabrics as they had been neatly folded in draws for some time.
Electricity is needed to use the iron. Oh boy, how I wished I had
asked my granny to pass her treadle sewing machine on to me. Our
time without power was not entirely frustrating as I read through a
lot of quilt books and made notes for further projects, so I am sure
you will see the finished quilts at show and tell sometime in the
coming years.
I had a letter from Brain Follett over the summer saying that he and
the family will be donating again this year to the Judy Follett
Education Fund. This is wonderful news and I know Margaret is
working to bring in a speaker or two using the funds. A letter
thanking the family on behalf of the guild has been sent.
An inventory of guild owned items has now been completed and will
be available to you all shortly via email and those without computers
will receive a hard copy.
I understand that some members who were taking part in the batik
block swap have decided to no longer continue. Team two are to
continue, but, if you are in one of the other groups and wish to carry
on with to project bring THREE months blocks to the September
meeting and we will try to set up a new group and accommodate
you all.
Looking forward to seeing you all again on the 17th of September to
start off a new quilting year. Please remember to bring you name
tags, coffee mugs and lunch.

The Judy Follett Education Fund.
Judy Follett was an active member of the GMDQG who lost a very courageous battle with cancer twelve
years ago.
Judy enjoyed our being a member of our guild so much that after her death, her family decided to set up
a memorial fund donating funds for ten years to the guild to be used for education. They wanted all
members of the guild to benefit from some form of quilting techniques, lecture etc.
It was twelve years ago July that Judy passed away and Brain, Mark, Brent and Rita are still donating.
What a very generous family!
Brain and his family also donated several antique quilts made by one of Judy’s aunts to the guild and
they will be on display after the September general meeting. Please stay and enjoy them.

FALL PROGRAMS
SEPTEMBER
Following the AGM Joy Brown will give a presentation remembering our past member Judy Follett and
show quilts from Judy's family. Our guild continues to receive support from Judy's family and it will be
wonderful to let our newer members get to know who she was.
OCTOBER
Teresa Niwinska will give a workshop on the technique of making a woven quilt. She will give a short
presentation at the September meeting to explain the preparation for the workshop. The supply list
follows this report.
NOVEMBER
We will have a "Back to Basics" day with several of our guild members demonstrating basic quilting skills
at stations where we will rotate in small groups every 15 minutes.
DECEMBER
December is our pot luck luncheon so there is no formal program. Please bring a favorite Christmas
theme quilt or quilted item for an extended show and tell.
There will be a sign up sheet at the September meeting for this years UFO challenge project.

WOVEN RUNNER SUPPLY LIST AND PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS
Supplies:
Sewing machine with 1/4 inch foot and quilting or walking foot
24" ruler for rotary cutting (mat and rotary cutter)
Thread and scissors
100 small head, short straight pins or push pins
masking/painters tape or 1/4"double sided tape – tape that does not leave residue
20" X 22" Cardboard to weave on it
marking tool (chalk, pencil or pen)
Fabric requirements:
batting 40 x 19 inches
1 yard fabric for the backing
10 inches WOF (width of fabric) cut into 4 strips 2.5 inches each to make a classic binding
3/4 yard fabric for tubes in light, medium and dark (you can buy 1 meter each – leftovers from making
tubes you can use for panels on the front or backing).
Instructions to make tubes (3 sets of 12 tubes from each fabric )
Cut 12 two inch strips WOF of each three fabrics.
Sew right sides together lengthwise using a scant 1/4" seam allowance.
Turn with a safety pin or turning tool.
Press with seam in the middle back.
The tube should be 42" long and 3/4" wide finished.
These should be made before the class (takes around 3-4 hours).

Library Report
Welcome back everyone. After our hot and dry summer the rain as I write this is a relief. If you paid
your membership in June and borrowed books over the summer it's now time to return them.
Just a reminder that the library cupboard also contains quilt-themed novels, quilting stencils and a few
miscellaneous items for your borrowing pleasure. We will continue to receive Love of Quilting and
Quilting Arts magazine for a few months.
The Quilters Block Bible by Celia Eddy has gone missing from the library. Please have a look through your
quilting books to see if you have misplaced it.

Mary Taylor
Sadly we heard this summer that Mary Taylor had passed away.
Mary had been a member of our guild for several years but discontinued her membership when she left
the North Shore to live closer to her family.
I will remember Mary as a very quietly spoken lady with a lovely smile.

I asked the executive for suggestions for the newsletter and Kathy McColeman suggested members
writing up little blurbs about things that are important to them in the quilt-making process. She
volunteered to start it off and has written a wonderful little article about 3 processes that she uses. I
was totally taken especially with the last one – don’t let the numbers get you down – it is the idea that is
so impressive to me.
I have also written a little blurb about a quilt show I was recently at. So, now I am asking the entire
membership for contributions and ideas for the newsletter. If you have something you would like to
share, please just do it – I imagine the rest of us would enjoy reading it.
Quilt Walk and Car Show in Ladner
My husband and I recently attended the Quilt Walk and Car Show in Ladner on August 16, 2015. What a
great way to spend a lovely summer afternoon. There were many wonderful quilts in the shop windows
and then some on display in a yoga studio. There were a couple of quilts that really got my attention –
both by Ladner quilter Matt Wheeler. One was a picture of Ellen – he used some computer program to
transform a photo of her into a pattern and then with many, many little squares, he recreated it. It was
behind glass and I could not get a photo that was not full of reflections. Google ‘Matt Wheeler Ellen
quilt’ and you will see it on Twitter. He also had one that had a circular centre panel with Hawaiian
quilting in the corners. The piecing on this was very impressive and several of us looking at it were
having a very hard time figuring out how it could possibly have been done. There was also a quilted car
cover and a pin up girl contest! All in all it would be worth the trip next year and if you get tired of cars
and quilts you can always go down the road a ways to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary and go for a walk and
see the Sandhill Cranes.

Three Things I Use on Most Every Quilt
When I’m starting out with an art quilt, be it a wall hanging or something bigger, after the initial design
thoughts I need to have a copy of the Golden Rectangle or Fibonacci calculation (remember Dan
Brown?) in front of me. This helps me to decide on the size of the quilt if I only have one dimension
(either length or width) to start. This calculation is the ratio that most of our everyday things, like a
credit card, are based on. The most pleasing ratio for length vs width is 1.618:1. So if a quilt is 30 inches
wide then to be a perfect ratio it would have to be 1.618x30= 48.5 inches long.
After the piecing and layering is done, and the quilt is pinned or sprayed and ready for quilting l like have
a sample portion of the quilt top, batting, and backing, pinned or sprayed in the same way as the
completed quilt. It is usually about 6 or 8 inches square or close enough. I use this to practice my
quilting lines, check tension for the different threads I might be using and to get a rhythm going before I
venture onto the quilt itself. Saves unpicking or unsewing.
When all this has been done and the quilt is bound, then comes the straightening. To make sure the
quilt is squared off I need to find the length of line that goes from one corner at the top to the opposite
corner at the bottom. (The length of the hypotenuse of the right angle.) In other words if the quilt is
30” wide and 48.5” long then the length of the line that goes kitty corner is, wait for it, A squared + B
squared = C squared and C = the length. So 30x30 = 900. 48.5x48.5= 2352.25.
900 +2352.25=3252.25. The square root of 3252.25 is 57.03 or 57 inches. It’s not really as difficult as it
sounds, and it’s all on a calculator, and most times the quilt is just fine. But if I need to square it off it
sure helps to have some place to start. I can then pin it in the right size, spray it with water and press
down on it with a steam iron to shrink or stretch it into shape. Let it dry in place and it’s done.

Frixion Pen information
While online one day - I was actually on the Kootenay Quilters Guild Facebook page - I came
across an article on Frixion Pens written by Jenny K. Lyon, a quilter from Northern California.
Her website is interesting and I thought some of you might enjoy the article about the Frixion
Pens. I have used them and wondered. She also has a tutorial there (under the quilts tab)
about squaring up a quilt using a laser level which is interesting.

This is a great time to share ideas, finish off UFOs, or just sew, sew, sew. We welcome new

Piped Binding
Wendy Lynn sent along these instructions for piped binding that was demonstrated by Christine
Richardson at Fibre Expressions in Sechelt. It looks very impressive when done.
To calculate the amount of binding, measure the perimeter of your quilt and divide it by the width of
your fabric. This is the number of strips you will need. Always add an extra strip to allow for error.

Cut the fabric that you want to be the piping 1¾“ wide.
Cut the binding fabric 1½“ wide.
Join each fabric end to end using a bias join. Press your seams open.
Stitch the two pieces together lengthwise making sure to offset the joins a little so that they
don’t end up right next to each other
Press the seam toward the binding and then press in half with raw edges meeting.
Stitch the binding to the back of your quilt, having the piping against your quilt.
Join the ends carefully so the seams line up.
Press the binding away from your quilt.
Turn the binding to the front of your quilt and stitch in the ditch between the piping and the
binding, mitering the corners as you go.
