Midsummer Night’s Tango
A documentary by Viviane Blumenschein!
A coproduction Gebrueder Beetz, Gema Films, DF/3sat and Illume Ltd.
In cooperation with SRF, YLE und SVT With the support of the MEDIA Progamme of the European Union. Funded by
Eurimages, FFA, Mediaboard, Filmstiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Finnish Film Foundation and the Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales!
Tango was born in Buenos Aires and no one dances tango as passionately as the
Argentineans do - that at least what the Argentineans themselves believe. Tango is as
Finnish as sauna and skiing - that is what the famous Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki and
many of his fellow countrymen are convinced of. Two countries, two opinions, two musical
traditions.!
“Midsummer Night’s Tango” is a humorous, light- hearted road movie, accompanying three
Argentinean tango musicians as they leave the milongas of Bue- nos Aires behind to
discover tango in faraway Finland.
Singer Chino Laborde, guitarist Diego “DIPI” Kvitko and bandoneonist Pablo Greco are the

stereotypical Argentinean tango musicians. They are noisy, passionate and one hundred
percent convinced that their music is the only true tango. Travelling through Fin- land, they
dive into a completely new world. Long strips of forests, hundreds of lakes, bright summer
nights and, above all, slightly shy and quiet people who play this foreign music called
Finnish tango.!
Travelling through the scenic landscape, they encounter great Finnish tango singers and
composers such as Reijo Taipale, Sanna Pietiainen and M. A. Numminen. They stumble
across open-air dance halls in the deep fo- rest, where people dance through the long
midsummer nights to the sound of the melancholic Finnish tango.!
Director Viviane Blumemschein created a delicate music documentary, using big, beautifully
shot images to capture a longing every tango song sings about. The film is filled with great
tango music and the masterpieces of Finnish tango, like “Satumaa (Wonderland)“.!
“Midsummer Night’s Tango” is a music-laden, humo- rous cinema documentary, capturing
the many comic and charming moments when musicians from two worlds come together –
to discover that they all share the same love for tango music, however different it might
sound.

quartet, the quartet Seccion Vermu and Daniel Melingo’s and Jose Angel Trelles’ ensembles.
With the guitar ensemble Hugo Rivas he accompanied the singer Jorge Vidal and bandoneonist
Leopoldo Federico and with the quartet “Catenacho” the singers Ricardo “Chiqui” Pereyra and

The singer Walter “El Chino” Laborde was born in 1972 in Avellaneda, a suburb of Buenos Aires.
He is the front man of the Tango Orchesta Típica Fernandez Fierro and surely the tango singer
with the biggest rock attitude of the tango scene. He is a leading figure among the talented young
musicians breaking the borders of traditional Argentinan music, always with great respect and
love for its deep roots. As a singer of Fernandez Fierro and traditional Tango Orchestras like
Sans Souci and Sexteto Mayor and his Duo “Tango Tango” with the guitarist Diego “Dipi” Kvitko
he toured Japan and several countries in Europe and the Americas. Furthermore he was an
actor in several theatre plays like "El romance del Romeo y La Julieta", "Discepolin y Yo" and
"Minga, Tango y Circo" and in feature films like "Luna de Avellaneda" directed by J. Jose
Campanella. Currently he hosts a film week and a Tango documentary in the Argentinean public
television.

Pablo Greco is a bandoneon player, composer and arranger. His passion for the bandoneon
arose very early in the hands of his father, a professional bandoneon player of the orchestras of
the 1940s. At the age of 20 Pablo found his first orchestra, which made him the youngest director
of Buenos Aires. He started working for the company Tango Danza Carlos Copes and was
invited to play in the famous Cabaret Marabu. From then on travelled Cuba, Japan, Brazil, Israel
and Europe playing with Antonio Gasalla, the CIPE Lincovsky, the Ballet de Tango y Folklore
Miguel Saravia, the Beba Pugliese Orchestra Paisajes Argentinos, the Cuarteto E. Morgado and
with his Pablo Greco Trio, Pablo Greco Quintet and Pablo Greco Sexteto. Pablo’s son Lautaro
followed the footsteps of his grandfather and father, which makes his family the only one with
three generations of successful professional bandoneon players in Argentina.
