April is here! With it
comes a very busy month
for your club.
In the Galley our
chefs have introduced new
menus for the weekend
lunch and dinner selection.
Beginning in April the snack bar hours for Sunday
will increase from Noon to 7:00 PM so members can
plan to sail, fish, kayak or simply enjoy the longer
daylight hours at the club and have dinner before
winding up their weekend.
Also for your enjoyment, the House and
Grounds committee, under Mike Furukawa,
upgraded the North BBQ with new stainless steel
burners and elements aimed at increasing the life
expectancy of this well-used asset.
New on the club’s social media is
Facebook.com/KaneoheYachtClub which is geared
to increasing access by members for members. As
we expand our hits on the site we’ll post more
information and pictures, but it is up to you to see
how it really adds to getting information to the
members and their friends.
As the year progresses we have lots of work to
do at the club. You’ll see our maintenance crew out
there painting and doing maintenance around the
facilities along with their regular weekly routines.
We have begun to implement LED lighting at the
club and plan to increase its use in parking and dock
areas.
A few reminders: all member boats used at the
club must have a legible club sticker (trailers too),
and the member must supply proof of liability
insurance… for homeowners this is typically part of
home insurance for boats 25 ft and under. It is highly
recommend, for minimal additional cost, that
liability insurance be increased to the maximum
(typically $500,000). Also, club members may not
authorize anyone else to use their slip or rack. If you
are unfamiliar with the Marina Regulations, please
download them from our website.
Walking around the club it is very disappointing
to see so many boats with State DLNR stickers out
of date, not just by a month or two but by years (one
was 10 years out of date). While it is not the club’s
responsibility to remind members to update their
stickers it is hard to believe that actively used boats
would lapse their registration.
Speaking of stickers, those of you who own
kayaks and paddle boards or even Lasers and El
Toros may want to pick up a “Paddle Smart” sticker
at the front office. This US Coast Guard program is
based around a reflective orange waterproof sticker
for your boat, with the owner’s ‘IF FOUNDCONTACT’ information (Phone 1, Phone 2 and a
name). The purpose is to identify the vessel if it is
lost, but especially if lost on the water. The idea is
that a quick call to the numbers will allow the Coast
Guard, DLNR or the Navy to implement a search
and rescue promptly, if necessary. Or, if the user is
safe, a costly search can be avoided and the owner
can be reunited with their property.
Either later this month or early next month the
Board of Directors plan to hold a few evening
meetings to update members on items of interest.
Keep an eye out for dates and times. I look forward
to seeing you at our events and enjoying our club’s
many activities and facilities.
Vice
Commodore

On March 7, we
welcomed
our
new
members at the first
Newcomer's Pupu Party
of the year. Sime Gross,
Sandy Ragley-Wood, and
the Deckhands did a great job in assisting with this
event. Welcome to all the new members. Also in
March, we had a very successful St. Patrick’s Day
dinner with 55 members attending. Mahalo goes out
to Roselle Nottage and her entertainment committee
for organizing this event. There was a lot of Green
Beer served as well as some Green Wine if you can
believe it. The First Friday Music event on March 6
was also very well attended. We received many
positive comments regarding the First Friday Music
so keep the comments coming as we appreciate your
support for this event. Roselle has organized First
Friday music for April 3.
To close out March, we had our Annual Blood
Drive on March 28 and a big Mahalo goes out to
Ron Dodini and Jean Fernie for their hard work to
make this a successful event. Through their efforts
the Blood Bank’s goal of having fifty people sign
up was accomplished. A special thanks to the Tennis
Fleet for providing baked goods for the blood
donors.
April continues to be a very busy month
starting with the Keiki Easter Party on Saturday,
April 4. The Deckhands have planned another great
event with Face Painting, Petting Zoo, Balloonists,
Shave Ice, refreshments and of course an Easter Egg
Hunt. On Sunday, an Easter Brunch is planned with
a great menu. Bunco Night is on Wednesday, April
8 and a great wine tasting event on Saturday, April
25 with more than 60 wines featured. Please contact
the front office to make reservations early for these
events before they sell out!
Our club management and maintenance staff
have been busy addressing the issues caused by the
storms in February. There were a lot of issues with
the piers that took a lot of effort to repair. Ken and
team were very proactive addressing the issues.
House and Grounds continues to work with our club
management and Finance and Planning to
coordinate maintenance activities to address
outstanding issues.
See you at the club and Happy Easter….

Aloha, all. March saw the
racing season pick up with
Thursday night races, the
Wahine Race, more Junior
Sailing events, and early
preparations for the Lipton
Cup. KYC is fortunate to
have a number of member boats all competing in a race
series to decide who will represent that club at the Lipton
Cup Offshore Challenge. IRF also completed its first
race on the 1st of March with 8 boats competing.
The race committee familiarization meeting went off
without a hitch on the 11th of March, and provided a
great deal of information for those wanting to participate
in the race committee process. The Regatta Chair, in
cooperation with the Fleet Captains, has scheduled most
of the race committees for the year, but there are still
opportunities to participate for anyone who wants to help
out and enjoy a day on the water with the racers. Overall
we are seeing great participation from the sailing fleets
and a great competitive environment for all.
The Fishing Fleet held its first meeting in March with
great participation from new and old fleet members. The
first tourney of the year gets underway this week with a
month-long tournament to catch the biggest fish. Rules
are simple - you have to leave from and return to KYC,
have fish weighed by an official weighmaster, and of
course you have to sign up and pay your tournament fee
to participate. For those who may have missed the
meeting you can catch up with any of the fleet members
for more details.
March also saw the completion of the dry storage
project with final painting and cleanup. Again, a note of
thanks to all who contributed to that effort. Please note
that the area adjacent to the north tennis court is no
longer authorized for boat cleaning and flushing. This
change was made to help extend the life of the seal coat
and pavement by preventing salt deposits. The area by
the boat ramp against the bulkhead is available for
flushing as needed – please restrict your boat washing
activities to that area.
The Mooring Committee is actively working on both
dry and wet storage issues, and as a reminder all boats
and trailers on KYC property are required to be KYC
registered. That means a legible KYC sticker on both the
boat, and if applicable the trailer or dolly. Stickers are
free and its an easy process, just see Julia or Jean in the
office and provide the documentation for your boat or
trailer and they will give you a sticker. I would also
suggest that boat owners take a moment to check your
state registration… while the majority of boats have
valid HA numbers, there are some that are significantly
out of date and since all KYC moored vessels are of
course being used a minimum of twice a quarter, sooner
or later DLNR or the Coast Guard may notice those
expired registrations.
Also, if you are in a wet slip and you haven’t checked
your mooring lines lately, please make a point of coming
down to do so soon – many lines are still improperly tied
or missing, and we need those items corrected for the
safety of all boats and piers.
As another reminder, please support the Port Captain
and our KYC Security by complying with their
instructions and guidance when using the facilities.
They are responsible for helping to make the club run
safely and smoothly, and they need our support.
As always, I greatly appreciate the efforts of all those
volunteers who keep the Club going strong, and look
forward to seeing many more of you as the year goes
on. Stay safe, watch out for each other, and I hope to
see you all at the Club or on the water.
Junior Sailing Director
Jesse Andrews
Port Captain
Bob Hurd
Aloha,
The weather is improving throughout the Pacific, and
cruising season is upon us. Larger boats will start to head
to the South Pacific soon. Some boats will be doing inter
island cruising also. I have heard rumors about some of
the boats heading out, but none of the owners have
informed me of their plans. The Club can use the
information to help other Club members during the more active summer season. There
is a requirement in the Marina Regulations that anyone leaving their slip for a period
of time contact the Port Captain and lay out their cruising plans. Some slips will be
vacant, and I won't know why, and the lack of information prevents us from letting
other members use the club’s vacant slips. Please contact me before you go.
The latest windstorm revealed some flaws in moorings at the Club and in some
member's faulty mooring lines. Some Club equipment was damaged by the stresses
from the storm. Everyone has learned lessons, and the Board and I are paying close
attention to the problems.
I did an examination of a portion of E pier and found 14 mooring violations in 24
consecutive slips. It was very disheartening to see so many deficiencies in owner’s
mooring gear. The Mooring Committee will process the violations that have not been
corrected in the required 30 days, and I will move on to the next portions of E and G
piers to inspect the moorings and electrical connections. There is a chart in the Marina
Regulations showing the proper sizes of nylon line to be used depending on the size of
your boat. There has to be a thimble (stainless steel recommended) tightly spliced into
the line, and a shackle attaching it to the fitting on the pier. Pre-spliced lines with the
thimble held in place by cable ties are not sufficient. The thimble must be tightly spliced
in place. If you need more attach points on your slip or replacements for the existing
ones you must contact the office and the maintenance crew will install them for you.
The wet and dry slip wait lists presently have many Club members’ names that
have given no dimensions for their boat. I cannot second-guess anyone’s needs.
Members must either turn in a revised application specifying the size and type of boat
slip desired or be passed up by someone further down the list who has specified boat
dimensions. If you are waiting for later to decide if you want a slip, do the other
members on the list, and me, a favor and ask that your name be put on the respective
inactive list. You will not affect your date of application, and you can call the Port
Captain at any time, telling him or her that you are ready for a slip and ask that your
name be placed on the active list in the chronological order of your application. This
happen in February, and a member whose application was made back in 1990 became
first on the active wet list and ended up with a wet slip a few weeks later.
Marina Regulations specify that a member wishing to bring a trailer boat to the
Club must show proof of insurance and ownership of the boat, obtain stickers for the
boat and trailer, and then bring the boat to the Club. Launching a boat without proving
it belongs to a Club member and that it has liability insurance is prohibited, unless it is
a sanctioned race or a pre-approved special occasion, approved by the Principal Race
Officer or Port Captain. Please, everyone, the rules help us to ensure that the only people
launching boats are club members!
Have you tried to read the number on your KYC boat sticker lately? Some stickers
given out earlier have faded to the point that they cannot be read. I will be sending out
Mooring Violation letters in May. The stickers are free at the office now. Take advantage
of the free offer now because Marina Regulation violations will be sent out in June, and
there will be a fine for no legible sticker in July.
Stay safe, have fun, and I’ll see you on the water.
Spreading KYC Aloha

Don Brown and Ruthanne
Quitiquit present Captain Kjell
Nesheim with a Kaneohe
Yacht Club burgee.
We had a great first HYSA regatta of the
year at KYC March 14. The previous weekend
was HYSA #1 at Hickam. Both events saw moderate trade winds averaging about 15 knots. Our El
Toro sailors excelled in both events taking the top
five overall spots. At KYC's event we also included the Open Bic boats from Hawaii Kai. Our
total number of entries was 39! We had 11 KYC sailors compete and swept
first through fourth in El Toro A and first through third in Laser B. We also
placed first in El Toro B. Many of these sailors will be traveling to Santa Cruz
this summer for the El Toro North Americans.
It looks like we will be sending 15 boats for the El Toro North Americans
July 21-24 in Santa Cruz! In order to make this possible we got a great discounted shipping rate from Matson to ship 15 El Toros. We are also planning
a few fundraisers with the first being at Waikiki Yacht Club Saturday, April 4
from 9:30 to noon. Hawaiian Values in Action is donating $1,000 for shipping
El Toros if we help to clean up the Ala Wai basin! Come help make our sailing
grounds a more beautiful place. Nets, gloves, trash bags and refreshments provided. BYO PFD. We are hoping to get confirmation soon on have one more
clean up for another $1,000 towards shipping. More details to follow.
There are a few other fundraisers in the works through KYC for June. If
all this works as planned shipping of the boats will be covered. Hawaii Sailing
Foundation have also indicated that they will provide individual financial assistance if a racer shows that serious determination preparing for this event.
This includes sailing in HYSA events in El Toros and at our yacht clubs in their
programs or races such as the KYC Friday night El Toro races.
Don't forget to come down on Friday night starting April 10 for the first El
Toro race of the year! Our next HYSA regatta will be the Slim Lambert regatta
at Waikiki Yacht on May 2.

Beautiful Day. The sky was bright.
The Koolaus were in all their splendor with the entire top of the range visible.
If that’s global warming… hhhmmmm.
But for most of us the action was on board with lots to do. The course
was starting at G25, out the main ship channel to K bouy, back in the Sanpan
Channel, finish at G25. There was a great battle going on with the lightweight
boats, the Hobie 33 Flying Tiger and Mark Denzer’s Cowabunga. With Mark’s
tiny self tacking jib, he would gain in the tricky upwind in the channel where
tacking properly was a premium. As soon as the reaches came in, Flying Tiger
stretched its legs and was off again. In the end though it came down to the
rabbit and the hare with Dave Nottage on his Soling ‘Pursuit’ unseating the
defender, Bill Leary in his Beneteau ‘Moku pe’a’. Rounding out the fleet was
Mark Logan on his Beneteau ‘Puanani’ and yours truly on his J35 ‘Alizé’ As a
little side note, wouldn’t everyone agree that the Sanpan Channel R2 marker is
really hard to see now that it got downsized?

International 14 Fleet
Andy Bates
The Cal 20 fleet is off to an amazing start this
season! At the past two regattas, series B and C, there
have been 13 boats the line. I think that is the first
time we’ve ever had that many boats out. It makes for exciting starts
and back and forth action throughout the entire race. Congrats to John
Myrdal on Ol’ Blue for taking first at Classboat B, and the Cruises on
Pilikia for taking first in Classboat C.
Additionally, this past Sunday, KYC hosted the annual Wicked
Wahine regatta in Cal 20s. It was a huge success as well, with 12 boats
and 37 wahine competitors. After three races, the team of Jen Gillette,
Jen Barra, Jackie Mcloughlin, and Leah Ford took first place. Congrats!
Big thanks to all the participants, race committee volunteers, and all the
Cal 20 owners for lending your boats, and Katie Cruise for organizing
everything. Without you all, the regatta would not have been the success
it turned out to be.
With many more regattas to come, there are plenty of opportunities
for people to come sailing. Anyone looking to get involved with the Cal
20 fleet (and do some one design racing!), please email me at
Cal20KYC@gmail.com.
See you on the water.

I-14 Classboat Race B (or number 2)
March 8th was a glorious day of sailing for the
I-14 fleet. The wind was a shifty 10-15 knots from the north and northeast.
The fleet had four boats turnout for the day; Tom Pochereva and Kevin
Rogers sailing Tom’s new boat 1144, Elise Leroux and Tanner Marsh
sailing 1104, Cecelia Jasson and Matty sailing Windlover 1101, Andy
Bates and Danielle Hull sailing 1160.
Race 1: The first race favored the port lay line. 1160 got there first and
rounded the weather mark ahead of the fleet. During the kite hoists 1160
has a major problem and the kite had to remain in the bag the rest of the
race. 1144 took the lead and never relinquished it finishing ahead of 1104
in 2nd place. 1101 had rudder damage and retired for the day to repair the
back of the boat. 1160 finished a distant 3rd.
Race 2: The breeze picked-up during race 2 and the fleet got off to another
clean start. 1144 and 1104 had some “swims” during the first two legs
which allowed 1160 to sail into the lead and finish first, followed by 1144
and 1104. Tanner Marsh had his first “off the boat” swim downwind. Good
job Tanner. Great rides downhill were had by all.
Race 3: The win moderated back down as race three got under way. 1160
and 1104 went for the previously favored port layline. 1144 was late to the
start and tacked on to port off the starting line and went for the starboard
layline that paid off handsomely this time. 1144 rounded the mark first
with a good lead that they did not give up, finishing first. 1160 was second
and 1104 was third.

Our February tournament broke the record for sign ups, with 26 members
and guests. Saturday’s weather was uncooperative, so tournament director
Greg Siok had to split the tournament over both Saturday and Sunday.
Keegan Giles took first place for the men, and Rob Rietow second. For the
women, Dana and Betsy Denzer tied for first place, and Dana won the trophy
by making the closest guess to the answer to the question: “What percentage
of Valentine Cards are purchased by women?” (answer: 85%).
Guests in the Feb. tournament were:Bob and Liz Meierdiercks and Lynn
Pease, all of whom are applying for membership.
left to right: Keegan Giles, Cindy Siok, Susie Weber,
Dana Nottage, Kit Beuret
Our March tournament fared better-weatherwise for the near-record 24 players,
including guests Harry Brown and Lynn Pease (right).
Cindy Siok and Donlei Darnell tied for first place among the women, and
Donlei won the trophy by having the closest (but not very close) guess to the
question: “When did Ireland first take part in the Olympics?” (answer: 1992).
First place among the men was Bob Yoder, followed by John Gross.
The annual fleet St. Patrick’s Day potluck offered lots of delicious corned beef and
cabbage, carrots and Irish potatoes, plus an assortment of scrumptious desserts.

Hello all,
The last few days have been so good for (stink potter) boating in the
bay. My son took me out to Moku Manu and the sandbar. It was so flat,
we could have walked to both places. Now we need some Spring
flowers, and lots of flowers on the avocado and mango trees.
