There’s more to read about this on page 4, and

One thing that often sets holiday property

on quality experiences. It’s really important to
us here at DAE that our members are enjoying
the best holidays possible, and so we are
delighted to announce the launch of our Resorts

Lanzarote
Back in December five members of the DAE
team visited Lanzarote to get a feel for the
island and experience the resorts we have to
offer. Here’s is what they thought:
Rosie
Club Las Calas
Just before Christmas we enjoyed an educational
trip to the lovely island of Lanzarote! We visited
several resorts that DAE are proud to offer to our
members and saw what the island has to offer.
The units are spacious and fully equipped for all
your catering needs! Puerto del Carmen is a lovely
town with all the shops, bars and restaurants
you need to make your holiday as enjoyable as
possible! The town is made up of a long strip,
close to the beach and also the old town which is
incredibly picturesque!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and would
greatly recommend the island itself along with
Club Las Calas in particular!
Keya
Costa Sal
My favourite resort in Lanzarote has to be Costa
Sal in Puerto del Carmen, I was really impressed
with the refurbishment of the units, they were
all light, airy and had all the fixtures and fittings
you would need. The gardens were extremely
well maintained and the resort has 2 lovely pools,
a bar/snack eatery and an a la carte restaurant.
We stayed at a great resort in Puerto del Carmen
called Club Las Calas, a resort that is hugely
popular with all members and is also one of
our Resorts of Excellence. It was clean and
modern and is currently going through further
refurbishments. The staff are incredibly friendly,
no problem is too big! It has two eateries on site,
a snack bar and a restaurant, both offering a wide
range of food – which is fantastic!
6 | SPRING 2016 holiday access
There is also a small shop on site should you need
any small items.
although for the more active, there are a couple of
tennis courts on site.
Costa Sal is situated about a 40 min walk from the
centre of Puerto del Carmen, so is in a much more
tranquil area. You can enjoy a nice long stroll along
the beach front to reach the centre or the staff will
kindly call a taxi for you which is around €4. For
families this is a great resort, or if you are wanting
to be less in the ‘hustle and bustle’ of it, this is
also great resort for you!
The pretty harbour town of Playa Blanca is situated
on the southern tip of Lanzarote only a short 30
minute drive from the airport. It’s a pretty, laid back
town with some fabulous restaurants along the
promenade and some upmarket bars for an early
sundowner cocktail overlooking the marina.
We enjoyed a trip of the Island with ‘Grand Tours’,
which was a full day trip with food included and
I have to say this trip was really fantastic. Having
never been to Lanzarote before I didn’t know
what to expect at all, and this trip really opened
my eyes as to how beautiful the island is. The tour
took us to the National Park where you can get a
camel ride and also to the volcanos and Timanfaya
where the ground is over 100C. We saw the very
unusual vineries as well as beautiful old churches
and stunning scenery from great heights which
make for outstanding pictures.
Surprisingly, you can catch the ferry to
Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca; the journey
taking just over 30 minutes. It’s well worth a trip
as the desert landscape is bare but beautiful and a
big contrast to Lanzarote.
Wendy P
Playa Blanca & the two resorts of Wimpen Las
Brisas & Las Casistas
This was my first visit to Lanzarote, and infact, my first visit to a ‘winter-sun’ destination!
I’m normally heading for the Austrian Alps in
December so this was a total change for me and I
was blown away by the dark, volcanic landscape,
which was mesmerising.
The two resorts of Wimpen Las Brisas & Wimpen
Las Casitas in Playa Blanca were by far my two
favourite resorts, with both being located very
close together and offering similar standards and
facilities. The traditional pueblo style villas, all fully
air-conditioned with a spacious outdoor patio are
dotted around pretty landscaped gardens and
within easy walking distance of the town and the
beach. These resorts are perfect for those with
limited mobility as the units are all ground floor,

Fuerteventura
While we were staying in Lanzarote we took the
opportunity to take the car ferry from Playa Blanca
across to Fuerteventura. Arriving in Corralejo, we
visited Atlantic Garden Resort which is a quiet
resort tucked away but also ideally located close
to shops and an abundance of restaurants. It’s
also within easy walking distance of the lovely
sandy beaches which the island is famous for.
We travelled through to Caleta de Fuste, driving
past mile after mile of beautiful sand dunes and
beaches, it was like being in a desert! Here we
found Elite Fuerteventura Club which is a larger
resort conveniently just five minutes from the
island’s only golf course, a short journey from the
beach and close to the airport for an easy transfer.
It’s also a great place for touring around the island.
Fuerteventura is the oldest Canary Island, and
was formed about 70 million years ago as a
result of volcanic activity.The geographical
position of Fuerteventura means that for tens of
thousands of years sand from the Sahara has
been deposited on Fuerteventura’s shores. The
result of this process is 125 miles of some of the
world’s best beaches.

currently available to download and keep on your

Apps for the UK Travel
TripAdvisor
This app is THE place to find reviews on almost
any aspect of your potential holiday plans. Be it
the pub next door, the excursion to the city or
even the deck chair hirer on the beach, TripAdvisor
will likely have a review for it.
Parkopedia
Many of the currently available map apps will point
out the nearest carpark, but how many will go into
as much detail as live availability and price?
Not only will this app find a local car park, but it
will give you directions to it, as well as tell you
how much you’ll have to pay to stay per hour and,
for some car parks, the exact number of spaces
currently available. Possibly an app to use for
general life as well as holidays.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the user base is
hard to please and that one reviewer’s 5* palatial
residence is another’s 1* flea pit. Also remember
that you don’t have to have been anywhere near
the place being reviewed to be eligible to write
one, so read some reviews with a pinch of salt.
However this app is a great place to start when
experiencing somewhere new.

Duolingo
This free and well-designed language learning app
has over 65 million users and although it’s not a
replacement for proper language tuition, it is a
fun way to learn the basics, or keep your grammar
and vocabulary skills up to date. In the vein of an

Onavo Extend
With the current data roaming charges being
applied we’re all a little wary about using our data
whilst abroad, especially with the horror stories of
large bills people have received whilst doing so.
Until the agreed EU cap arrives next summer, this
app will help you drastically reduce the amount of
data required to perform everyday tasks, such as
retrieving email and posting to Facebook. It also
stops the loading of images until you scroll down
to them saving you wasted data usage.

PackPoint
If like me you’re not a fan of packing (see
previous editions of Holiday Access) you’ll love
this app. Select your destination, your duration
and reason for visiting and PackPoint will give
you a full list of items you’ll likely need. As you
pack each item you tick it off the suggestions list
meaning this is a great app for those (like me)
who always forget something.

And finally, possibly the most
important of all
SitOrSquat
A bit like TripAdvisor, but for toilets, SitORsquat
offers an indispensable guide to where the local
toilets are and more important, if they’re worth
spending a penny at.

With Google Translate you can type in or dictate
short sentences which will then be translated from
one language to another. Useful for when you’re in
line for a drink and don’t want to look like a traditional
tourist, all you need to do is select an input and
an output language and then type or dictate your
message. The app then gives you a translated text,
or a short synthesized voice message. New features
have also been added allowing you to translate
text and signage as if by magic with the aid of your
camera. Now that’s clever.

Destination Feature
The Algarve
The Algarve has long been a holiday favourite,
with the lively seaside towns, golden pristine
beaches secluded coves, cliff top walks and
numerous golf courses making this one
of our most popular destinations. Beyond
these obvious attractions there’s more to
discover in the region – from towns crowned
by centuries-old castles and cathedrals, to
picturesque villages and enchanting stretches
of shoreline.
Vilamoura
If you’re looking for Algarve luxury, add the
resort of Vilamoura to your list. This purposebuilt resort offers accommodation, eateries
and activities to suit all tastes. It is built around
numerous golf courses and beautiful parks and
gardens with lovely walks, running and cycling
tracks crisscrossing the whole area. The centre
of Vilamoura is built round the luxurious marina,
bordered by exclusive shops, restaurants and bars.
Resorts include:
Dom Pedro Portobello Hotel
Four Seasons at Vilamoura
Hotel Vila Gale Ampalius
Faro
The Algarve’s historic and vibrant towns each have
a unique personality. Faro is the region’s capital
and has a more Portuguese feel than many other
towns, with a fascinating medieval quarter and
wonderful sandy islands in the bay. If you find
yourself with a few hours to spare this lovely city
is well worth exploring.
11 | SPRING 2016 holiday access
Dom Pedro Portobello Hotel
Albufeira Beach
Albufeira
Heading further west, the next destination you
reach is the cliff side town of Albufeira. A former
fishing village, it is now a thriving tourist town.
Offering a vast array of activities and excursions,
there really is something to suit everyone’s taste.
Sao Rafael Beach
The west side of the town has easy access to one
of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, Praia Sao
Rafael, which really is worth a visit and is within
easy walking distance of Ponta Grande Resort.
Resorts include:
Ponta Grande Sao Rafael
Clube Praia da Oura
Acqua Maris Balaia
Ponta Grande Sao Rafael
12 | SPRING 2016 holiday access
Carvoeiro
Travelling further along the coast you reach the
lovely town of Carvoeiro. Once a traditional small
fishing village, it has managed to retain its charm
due to its stunning location in a steep sided
valley. Two cobbled roads lined with restaurants
and shops lead down to a pretty square which
opens up on to a beautifully sheltered, sandy bay,
protected on either side by golden cliffs. You can
still watch local fishermen landing their catches or
book a boat trip for an excursion down the coast
to see the fabulous sea caves and grottos. The cliff
tops around Carvoeiro offer plenty of scope for
walking with some great views and also access to
spectacular sandy coves.
Resorts include:
Monte Carvoeiro Club
Ponta Grande Carvoeiro
Alvor
The next seafront town is the seaside resort and
fishing village of Alvor. Cobbled, winding lanes
lined with restaurants, cafés, bars and shops
lead down from its ancient church to the recently
renovated paved riverfront, an ideal place to relax.
Choose from one of the many cafés, all with
open air terraces and enjoy the views across the
Ria Alvor. The wetlands of the Alvor river estuary
provide a unique and protected habitat for resident
and migratory birds. There is a small marina in
the estuary where you can book boat trips. The
beaches at Alvor are magnificent and access
Alto Golf Club pool
couldn’t be easier – just park and walk onto the
beach. There is also a new wooden boardwalk that
runs behind the beach, among the dunes, and
makes for a lovely walk along the river estuary.
Resorts include:
Alto Club
Pestana Alvor Park
Pestana Alvor Beach Club
Elliot at Vale Do Lobe
Booking tip
All the resorts are very busy in the summer as
most Portuguese people also take their holidays
in July and particularly August. If you’re not
keen on crowds and are not tied to high-season,
avoid visiting at this time. Spring and autumn
are excellent alternatives. The Algarve’s climate
boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and mild
temperatures, making it ideal for watersport
enthusiasts, tennis lovers and especially golfers as
it is home to some of the best courses in Europe.
With so many budget airlines flying to Faro, a trip
to the Algarve should not break the bank.
You can view all our current Algarve
availability here
Almancil
A small town on the southern shoreline of
Portugal enjoying a warm climate around the
year. It has become an important hub for service
providers catering for the needs of two wellestablished holiday and residential developments
nearby. These are Quinta do Lago and Vale do
Lobo. There is a large selection of restaurants
offering different forms of cuisine and plenty of
shops for all tastes

Cancellation Protection Option
- Reassurance should you not be able to travel
Nobody wants to think about having to cancel
their holiday, but should the worst come to
the worst and you are not able to travel, DAE’s
Cancellation Protection Option (CPO) gives
you peace of mind that you will receive a full
refund of your exchange cost, and even more
importantly receive your holiday credit back to
use again against a future exchange at a more
convenient time.
The return of your exchange credit to your account
is one thing your travel insurance will never
cover, and to earn this credit you had to pay your
maintenance or management fees at your home
resort, which are routinely hundreds of pounds, so
it’s really important not to lose it.
14 | SPRING 2016 holiday access
For just £12.00 you can fully protect the cost
of your holiday exchange fee AND have your
banked week credit reinstated, so make sure
you add Cancellation Protection to your next
booking. Should the unthinkable happen,
there’s one thing less to worry about.
To find out more about CPO, and to view the full
terms and conditions, click here.
