Our Company Story
Before there was the United States of America, there was Caswell-Massey, the original
purveyor of the finest personal care products and accessories. The company was founded in
Newport, Rhode Island by Scottish-born Dr. William Hunter in 1752. His location in the bustling trade
center enabled the doctor to procure the finest ingredients the world had to offer and he used his
medical expertise to formulate personal care and medicinal preparations for a discerning, devoted
clientele.
Ownership of Dr. Hunter’s Apothecary, as it was originally known,
transferred through apprenticeship for the majority its history, with
each retiring pharmacist handing over the keys and expertise to his
apprentice. The company took its present name in 1876 when thenowner John Rose Caswell became partners with New York
businessman William Massey.
260 years after Dr. Hunter opened his doors, Caswell-Massey
continues to honor his commitment to quality, service and
innovation by crafting the highest quality products and
accessories using the finest natural ingredients in a wide array
of soaps, lotions, grooming products, fragrances and
accessories.

The Art of Soap Making
A beautiful and fragrant bar of soap is one of life’s little luxuries. As
soap makers, Caswell-Massey is truly in a class of its own and strongly
believes that soap should be made in the most natural way possible.
Rich lathering, deep cleansing, gentle and skin conditioning, high quality
soaps should cleanse the skin, but not strip it of its natural oils. It should moisturize, nourish and leave the
skin smooth and soft to the touch and help ensure that the skin remains that way for years to come.
There are three key ways Caswell-Massey ensures its customers will enjoy the highest quality soap available,
bar after bar:
• Moisture rich base: Its starts with an all-natural organic vegetable soap base made from coconut and
palm oils. The luxurious soap base is crafted only hours from harvest for utmost freshness, which is the only
way to ensure that highest and best quality natural glycerin content is maintained.
• Perfumed-grade fragrances: High quality soap should smell like a high-end fragrance-nothing less. We
only use perfume-quality fragrance oils, and a generous amount of them-up to 3% of the weight of the bar-to
scent its soaps. The resulting soaps offer all the nuances of the fragrance, not just the top note, and provide
a rich, exhilarating experience similar to a fine cologne.
• Triple milling: After nearly three centuries of practicing the art of soap-making, we have perfected the
process of blending the base, fragrance and other special ingredients. Too little milling, and the soap won’t
last long and the fragrance can be uneven. Too much milling and the soap becomes dry and hard to the
touch, and less fragrant. That’s why Caswell-Massey soaps are milled exactly three times. This ensures the
fragrance is mixed throughout the bar and is as present on the last day as it was on the first.
