delivery to the Hazlet Post Boxes. I will
provide them with a copy of the Hazlet
Horizons and they will facilitate the
distribution of the copies.
It has been brought to my attention
that this is a very vital link from the
school to the community. Please thank
them when you see one of the
members . You will receive copies from
January to June 2015 and at that time
other arrangements will be made.
Just in Case You Missed It!
The Hazlet hall board would like to send a huge
thank you to Henry Little for 40+ years of
dedicated service. We will miss you on our board.
Welcome to Glen Little, we are sure you will do
your best to fill dad's shoes !!!
Special thanks to Tyson Bavle for promptly taking
care of our very unpleasant plumbing issue. On
that note a reminder to all who use the hall to not
turn furnace thermostat off in kitchen as pipes
will freeze in bathrooms and kitchen.
We are planning on replacing linoleum in kitchen
and will be fundraising for project. Depending on
the weather we are hoping to have a ski-doo rally
in the near future.
We, along with the library board, want to thank
everyone involved in any way to make our fall
supper such a success .Special thanks to Gloria
Parker for each year bringing all the decorations
for the tables, also for all the years you tirelessly
served on the board.
We welcome new members to our little board,
good times!!
Thanks for understanding the situation

Of entomology in Canada. The recipient is selected by the affiliate society that hosts the annual meeting of the

Brian Olson is a teacher by inclination and training. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from the
University of Regina, and was a classroom teacher, Vice-Principal, Principal and school division administrator for
30 years spanning 1974-2004. During that time, Brian focused his teaching on senior science programs,
especially biology. In his role as a biology teacher Brian instilled in his students a wonder of their natural
environment and introduced them to the fascinating world of insects.
In his commitment to personal and professional growth, Brian obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the
University of Regina in 2000. His keen eye for detail led him to take a science class in scientific illustration by
distance from the University of Nebraska from 2001-2005. Brian has numerous published illustrations to his
credit. He drew the illustrations for the book Grasshopper Identification and Control : Methods to Protect Crops
and the Environment, written by Dan Johnston of the University of Lethbridge and published by AAFC and Sask
Pulse Growers. In 2006 Brian obtained a Master of Science degree with a specialization in Entomology from the
University of Nebraska in the subject area of grasshopper diversity in disturbed habitats (oilfield reclamation). As
an example of “Once a teacher, always a teacher”, Brian was contracted by the Graduate Studies Department of
the University of Nebraska to develop an evaluation instrument which would be administered to all potential
graduates as a pre-requisite to granting a M.Sc. in Entomology.
Besides introducing students to the fascination of insects, Brian has furthered the knowledge of entomology in
Canada by working with Dan Johnson in a survey of knowledge of entomological species in the Great Sand Hills
of Saskatchewan –Alberta. His broad knowledge of biological systems was recognized when he recently served as
the Integrated Pest Management Specialist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. Brian is truly a
renaissance man. Prior to his 30 year career as a biology teacher, Brian was an instructor in weaponry and the
outdoors to recruits in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves; there he specialized in the subjects of mines, high –
explosives, and chemical and biological warfare. He has been a fur trapper, municipal weed inspector, pest
control officer, and hail adjuster for a hail company, where he developed new methods in determining hail loses
in lentils. He oversaw the establishment of insects for the biological control of leafy spurge in a Saskatchewan
municipality. Brian worked for the Biology Department of the University of Regina one season, establishing a
biology field station at Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan. In the process of cataloguing the natural history of the area, he
fenced approximately 10 km of bush land. This experience may have whetted his appetite for wood work; Brian
is an experienced house contractor, and has built a log house from cutting and peeling logs to completely
finishing the home.
Brian is an active member of the Saskatchewan Natural History Society, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and
the World Wildlife fund, where he is a member of the Operation Rescue Team for Endangered Wildlife.
Brian Olson is the quintessential field naturalist, and is well deserving of the Norman Criddle Award for 2014.

We hit the ground running in January and
into a very busy month! The annual
Fernie ski trip will take place from January
8-11th involving most of the high school

celebrating the hard work that goes into
putting on a drama production!

doldrums. Join us at the rink on February

SCC is planning to host! More details to

schedule of games throughout the month
and playdowns will be held in Hazlet as
well so please come out and cheer on our
curling teams!
Exams will take place for the grades 10-12
students on January 28 and 29. Please
ensure that your high school aged
students are supported in their
preparation for exams. They tell me that
pre-exam massages might be in order so
that might be one way to help them with
their preparation!
Have an amazing month – there’s no
excuse for boredom, that’s for sure!
