Dear Members,
Welcome all members new and old to the start of the
2002-2003 Technical Meetings series. This year promises
to be a year of new and exciting topics as well as new venues and plant tours in hopes of maintaining old membership and attracting new members.
Before I start on any new business, I would like to acknowledge and thank those who made this year's golf outing a day to remember. A special thanks to the Entertainment Committee and those individuals who volunteered
their time to make that day memorable. Keystone AFS
would also like to send our heartfelt thanks to the companies that made donations for door prizes.
The Keystone Chapter of the American Foundry Society
strives to provide quality, technical information to our
membership. Since many of our members are also members of other societies and because we have common interests, it seems only fitting that we should coordinate
joint meetings wherever possible. We have the extreme
pleasure this month of once again sharing our technical
program with the Conestoga Foundrymen's Association.
Details as well as your yearly meeting calendar can be
found in this newsletter.
The time has come for our 2002 AFS Keystone Chapter
to get started to think of ways and means to attract more
members to attend our meetings. This support is very important. Please encourage your fellow employees to attend
monthly meetings. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me or another board
member. it is extremely important that our members take
the time to give their input. Your participation in this program is vital to our chapter's future.

The Inventor Babbitt
On July 26, 1799, inventor and metallurgist Isaac
Babbitt was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. Mr. Babbitt
was given the credit as the inventor of the famous "Babbitt
Metal." Although as the inventor of method of using soft
metals for journal bearings, his patents made no claim of
the alloy, but simply the method of holding the metal in
place. He was first a goldsmith then moved to Boston
where he was employed by Alger's Foundry and Ordnance
Works (South Boston Iron Works) in South Boston. His invention was patented in several foreign countries but never
in the United States. His formula for Babbitt metal was: 4
parts Copper, 8 parts antimony, 24 parts tin and lead.
Isaac Babbitt first became known as a manufacturer of "Britannia Ware" (named for the region where it was
manufactured) in the early 1800's. Britannia Ware was a
cheap substitute for silver, which was mostly imported from
Europe; it was a closely guarded mixture of copper, tin and
antimony. Britannia Ware was the forerunner to pewter. In
1824 Babbitt formed a partnership with William Crossman
and formed the company Babbitt & Crossman. In 1824
Babbitt produced the first Britannia Ware articles made in
the U. S. such as inkstands, shaving boxes, and cups. The
company became financially troubled and was sold to 2 apprentices (Henry Reed and Charles Barton) and became
known as Reed and Barton. The Reed and Barton Company is still in business today.
Babbit moved on to Alger Foundry, where he cast the first
brass cannon made in the United States. This paved the
way for Alger Foundry to become widely admired for their
Civil War era Federal Napoleon cannon production. Alger
was one of only 5 foundries in the United States contracted
to make these brass cannons for the military.
Babbitt's most famous invention may not even be
his own. In 1839, he patented a casing (journal box) he designed to hold and cover train axles and ball bearings. In
that patent, Babbitt briefly described an alloy that he believed would make superior ball bearings: a combination of
tin, lead, copper, and antimony. Although his main patent is
largely forgotten today, the alloy he described - which may
in fact have been invented by someone else - is now
known as "Babbitt Metal" in his honor (he is not regarded
as the actual inventor or the alloy, and presumably got no
royalties from it). It is a whitish metal that can withstand
great pressure; ball bearings made of Babbitt metal produce very little friction. Babbitt or white metal bearings were
crucial to the development and success of the steam engine and the internal combustion engine.
For the journal box invention he received a gold
medal in 1841 from the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic's Association, and afterward congress granted him
$20,000 for the invention. He subsequently patented his
invention in England (1844) and in Russia (1847).

Somerville, Massachusetts where he died in 1862.

Formerly Known as The Eastern Foundry Company from 1923 to 1992. In 1992 the soil
pipe division closed and the Company name was changed to EAFCO, Inc. On November 1,
1998 the company was purchased by Mestek, Inc. and became Boyertown Foundry Company.
The Eastern Foundry Company/EAFCO, Inc. incorporated a continuous program of plant
expansion, equipment modernization and utilization of some of the most up-to-date work
methods. Boyertown Foundry Co. is continuing along this path with the most recent addition
of a Kunkel Wagner Automated Molding System.
Boyertown Foundry Co. is solely green sand producing 120 tons per day of class 30 gray
iron. They currently supply hydronic castings to H B Smith Co. and Peerless Heater Co.
Plant tours will be available from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM,, actual tour is approximately one
hour long. All visitors will be greeted at the scale house on Spring St., tours will begin from
there. It is asked that all tour participants dress accordingly as you will be touring while the
plant is in full operation. Enclosed shoes with low heels and safety glasses are required,
safety glasses will be provided upon request for those not having their own.
It should be noted that all foundry operations are completed by 4:00 PM, please attend as
early as possible.**

from our chapter participate.
A special thank you to Conestoga Foundrymen's Association
for hosting this event. We look forward to having you as our
guests next year.
Please mark your calendar for this month's meeting that will
be held Tuesday November 12 th at Boyertown Foundry. This
meeting will include a tour of the facility and dinner to follow.

we could have at least 25 members participate.

On July 26, 1799, inventor and metallurgist Isaac Babbitt was born in Taunton, Massachusetts. Mr. Babbitt was
given the credit as the inventor of the famous "Babbitt
Metal." Although as the inventor of method of using soft
metals for journal bearings, his patents made no claim of
the alloy, but simply the method of holding the metal in
place. He was first a goldsmith then moved to Boston
where he was employed by Alger's Foundry and Ordnance
Works (South Boston Iron Works) in South Boston. His invention was patented in several foreign countries but never
in the United States. His formula for Babbitt metal was: 4
parts Copper, 8 parts antimony, 24 parts tin and lead.
Isaac Babbitt first became known as a manufacturer of
"Britannia Ware" (named for the region where it was manufactured) in the early 1800's. Britannia Ware was a cheap
substitute for silver, which was mostly imported from
Europe; it was a closely guarded mixture of copper, tin and
antimony. Britannia Ware was the forerunner to pewter. In
1824 Babbitt formed a partnership with William Crossman
and formed the company Babbitt & Grossman. In 1824
Babbitt produced the first Britannia Ware articles made in
the U. S. such as inkstands, shaving boxes, and cups. The
company became financially troubled and was sold to 2 apprentices (Henry Reed and Charles Barton) and became
known as Reed and Barton. The Reed and Barton Company is still in business today.
Babbit moved on to Alger Foundry, where he cast the
first brass cannon made in the United States. This paved
the way for Alger Foundry to become widely admired for
their Civil War era Federal Napoleon cannon production.
Alger was one of only 5 foundries in the United States contracted to make these brass cannons for the military.
Babbitt's most famous invention may not even be his
own. In 1839, he patented a casing (journal box) he designed to hold and cover train axles and ball bearings. In
that patent, Babbitt briefly described an alloy that he believed would make superior ball bearings: a combination of
tin, lead, copper, and antimony. Although his main patent is
largely forgotten today, the alloy he described - which may
in fact have been invented by someone else - is now
known as "Babbitt Metal" in his honor (he is not regarded
as the actual inventor or the alloy, and presumably got no
royalties from it). It is a whitish metal that can withstand
great pressure; ball bearings made of Babbitt metal produce very little friction. Babbitt or white metal bearings were
crucial to the development and success of the steam engine and the internal combustion engine.

in 1841 from the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic's Association, and afterward congress granted him $20,000 for
the invention. He subsequently patented his invention in
England (1844) and in Russia (1847).
Babbitt was committed to the McLean Mental Asylum in
Somerville, Massachusetts where he died in 1862.

PS. If you missed it, the cover article in the December issue of Modem Casting is of particular
importance to metal casters. Although the data
was of 2001 origin it shows trends which are very
disturbing. China has eclipsed the United States
in ferrous casting production and is gaining substantially in other materials. It is now clearly "the
leader in casting production". The immediate article following the census is "Control of VOC's".
I wonder if China is controlling VOC's and this
article is meant for them?

What if
What if the cruise ship RMS Olympic had not collided
into the British cruiser, the HMS Hawke, in the sound off
Southampton England, on September 20, 1911.
On the foggy night of September 20, 1911, the RMS
Olympic was proceeding from Southampton when it
smashed into the British cruiser, HMS Hawke. The Olympic
was less then a year old and was a premier ocean liner that
could make the transatlantic cruise between England and
New York in three weeks, record time in that era. The shipyard of Harland and Wolff decided to make emergency repairs to the damaged ship. Most of the repair crew assigned to the Olympic was pulled from the work of building
the RMS Titanic. The repairs took several months, delaying
the launching of the Titanic. Five days after Olympic arrived
at the shipyard, an announcement in the London Times
gave April 10th, 1912 as the new date for Titanic's maiden
voyage, 20 days delayed. What if this amendment of the
launch date doomed the Titanic?
It seems this first mishap was not the only maritime adventure for the Olympic, on May 15, 1934, as the Olympic
approached New York; it struck the Light Ship Nantucket
during a heavy fog, cutting the Light Ship in half. Of the
Light Ship's crew, four were drowned, three were fatally injured, and three were rescued. Light Ships were common
along the Eastern shore of the United States in the early
1900's. These ships were used as navigation landmarks in
the days before GPS and electronic buoys. To be stationed
on a Light ship was three weeks of boredom and loneliness.
The Titanic had two identical sister ships (the biggest
ships ever built) that were built in the Harland and Wolff
shipyard which was competing furiously with the East
Coast ship yards of Philadelphia and Wilmington, DE in the
race to cross the Atlantic. The Olympic was launched on
October 20, 1910. After its first fateful calamity, which
caused the Titanic to be delayed, and its second collision in
1934 the ship was retired in 1935. It was dismantled for
scrap in 1937. The second identical ship to the Titanic was
the Britannic launched in 1915 (initially delayed because of
design changes implemented after the Titanic sinking).
Originally, Britannic had been assigned the name of Gigantic. However, after the disaster with Titanic, the decision
was made to rename the vessel Britannic. Before its
maiden cruise (after 3 years of design change implementations) it was converted into a hospital ship for World War I.
The Britannic's service didn't last long, on November 21,
1916; the Britannic was proceeding through the Aegean
Sea east of Greece when it struck a mine. Because the
weather had been warm, many of the portholes had been
opened, so rapid flooding of the ship occurred. The ship
sank in 50 minutes with a small loss of life.

Bernard N Ames, retired chairman and CEO of Ferguson
Propeller, passed away on December 21, 2002.
Born in New York City, he attended the University of
Alabama and received a Bachelor and Master of Science
degree in metallurgy, chemistry and ceramics in 1938 and
1939, in addition to an Honorary Doctor of Science degree
in 1981.
Ames began his career as head of the casting division of
the Material Laboratory of the New York Naval Shipyard
in 1941. In 1956 he became president of Columbia
Bronze Corporation and its affiliates, in Freeport Long Island, New York. While at Columbia Bronze he oversaw
the production of propellers for the famed USS Nautilus
nuclear submarine that voyaged under the North Pole in
1958.

In 1968 he was named senior vice of Walter Kidde & Co.
and was chairman of the board and president of United
States Lines from 1972 to 1975. In 1975 he was elected
vice chairman of the board of Kidde.
Ames was instrumental in the development of non-ferrous
radiographic standards and the correlation of radiographic
indications with physical properties in the non-ferrous
field. He aided in the development of melting furnace design and practices, the application of sound practical foundry techniques and controls, and participated in gating and
heading studies. He also pioneered in the development of
shell molding techniques.
A long-term member of the American Foundry Society,
Ames received the AFS Award of Scientific Merit in
1962, served as AFS director class of 1966, AFS President
1968-69, Retirement Fund Trustee 1969-74, CMI Trustee
1967-70 and received the AFS Peter L Simpson Gold
Medal in 1978. He also served on the AFS Metropolitan
Chapter board of directors and is past chairman of the
AFS Brass and Bronze Division.

If truth in advertising where ever implemented the
above statement would have to be displayed prior to
any commentary published by the Hollywood elite.
For the most part, the "Beautiful people" are nothing
short of being self centered, sheltered, hypocritical ignoramuses. Because of their popularity special interest
groups solicit their services to promote an agenda.
These acting imbeciles are easily brainwashed with
good old touchy-feely propaganda. This then leads to
the automatic shut down of their brains and their
mouths kick into overdrive. The sad part is that they
are so wrapped up in their (out of control, ever expanding) egos (ignorance maybe?) that they don't see
their hypocrisy. Or, perhaps elitism dictates that they
don't have to "walk the talk" and adhere to the garbage
they spew.
Their latest crusade seems to be the Sport Utility
Vehicle and the pending war with Iraq. Have you seen
the latest television adds? Joe six pack (of course it
has to be an evil white male), pulls up to a gas pump
in his SUV (not a Porsche turbo). The seen then
morphs into a picture of an evil oil executive (you
guessed it! white male) and it ends with a scene of
Arab terrorists while the commentator explains your
gas usage is supporting terrorism. This basically implies that owning a SIJV is unpatriotic. The good news
is that they are finally admitting that the Arab Oil Cartel is supporting terror. The irony is that they chide us
while they retire to their large (energy guzzling) estates with the large heated pool and the detached garage housing a plethora of sports cars and STJVs. they
are the first on the scene to protest Nuclear Power and
oil drilling in the US. Yet Nuclear Power and US oil
drilling will dramatically diminish our dependency on
Arab Oil.
The mainstream media is of no help. Always
poised to question a conservative's credibility, they
give Hollywood a free pass. They report this disinformation as Gospel. Unfortunately many buy into this
drivel. They forget that acting is really living a
scripted lie, which is okay for entertainment. We must
remember that their fantasy land isolates them from
reality thus rendering them incapable of understanding
the real world. Dangerous shit happens and God hasn't
left any room for a circumstance to be shot over.

attack on Iraq is imminent. There is certainly a preoccupation on everyone's (not the French) part for news of
what will happen and when. Our prayers go out to our

Let's face it, the liberal democrats took a severe heating
in the last election. History dictated that they should have
won big, but they didn't. My message to you Libs, "get
over it". Daschle and Clinton (Hi! & Bill) are blaming talk
radio, specifically Rush Limbaugh. Terry McCãuliff
claims that the Republicans cheated and the media is lamenting that the Dems didn't get their message out. How ever, the facts clearly indicate tha the Dems cheated and
their message got out loud and clear. The voters heard and
let everyone know that they wanted no-part of it. If you
analyze the results further you would learn that those Democrats, that did win, campaigned on the Bush agenda
(cutting taxes, reduced government spending and strong
homeland security) and their willingness to work with
Bush. This County could celebrate as the Liberals contintied to slide into insignificant obscurity. That is until Trent
Lott gave them renewed hope by opening his mouth and
inserting his foot. His comments, delivered at Strom Thur man's 100tui birthday party, were innocuous and irrelevant
and could have been interpreted to several meanings. It
took the Democrats almost 2 weeks to come up with a
meaning they could use against Trent. The resuscitated
Liberals slithered into the spotlight to mount their assault
on Senator Trent. Allied with the mainstream media their
attack was like a Blitzkrieg. Trent Loll was caught off
guard, mounted a feeble defense, then succumbed under the
pressure. He resigned his position as speaker of the Senate,
but he did not relinquish his Senate Seat (this is the normal
procedure for fallen leaders). Had he left the Senate a Democrat had been chosen to replace him. With the downfall
of Lott, the invigorated Liberals then focused on the Republican Party. All Republicans were accused of being
closet Racists.
This tactic is covered in the Liberal Democrats' Playbook, when all else fails play the race card. They know
that accusations of racism, whether untrue or not, are
treated as a conviction and assumed to be guilty as charged.
I often wondered why the Liberals were so adept at seeing
racism where others don't. It then dawned on me that "it
takes one to know one". Judge for yourself:
Clarence Thomas - First African American to be
nominated to the Supreme Court nominated by Republican Bush 41, vehemently opposed by Liberal Democrats.
Maynard Jackson - African American former
Mayor of Atlanta was next in line to become chair of
the DNC. The party ignored him as they anointed
Clinton buddy Terry McCauliff.
Janet Reno - ran against Bill McBride in the Democratic primary for Governor of Florida. She was a
favorite of the minorities and had a chance to win the

DNC felt she wouldn't stand a chance against Jeb Bush so
they created problems at several Democratic controlled polling places hindering many minorities from casting a vote. Of
course they blamed the Republicans and the idiots in the
press bought it.
Senator Robert Byrd DWVa A former Grand Kleegal (a
mojor recruiter) of the KKK recently used the "N" word several times in an interview. There was no outrage.
Donna Brazille Former campaign manage for Al Gore
has been assigned the job of thwarting the Presidential run
for Al Sharpton, a prominent African American Congressman.
Allen Page an African American State Supreme Court
Judge was undermined, by the DNC, in his attempt to replace
Paul Wellstone as a Senator for Minnesota The DNC selected 3 time loser Walter Mondale instead.
Carl McCall an African American seeking to become
Governor of NY had promised campaign funds cut because
Terry McCauliff felt the money could be spent elsewhere.
Carl learned of this through the NY Times, McCauliff didn't
have the guts to tell it to McCall.

been making the same complaints. For over forty years they have
bought into the Liberal Lies and voted Democratic. When will
they realize that they wasted their votes on Politicians who want
them to remain slaves to ever expanding Government. The truth is
that Liberalism is really Compassion Racism. Racism does exist,
it is evil and should be eradicated. However, it is also evil to use
false accusations of racism in order to promote your political
agenda. Those who play this game should be vanquished along
with the recist. Both are equally evil and have no place in this
Great Country.

The "York",
the first coal burning locomotive
Phineas Davis was a foundryman in the early 1800's in
York Pennsylvania. He came to York as a barefoot teenage
orphan, walking all the way to York from New Hampshire.
He was taught clock making by his friend, Jonathan Jessop. He built the first coal burning locomotive that was put
into regular service on the nations' expanding rail system.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had offered a $4,000
prize to anyone who could build a successful coal-burning
engine. Up to that time only wood was used for steam engines. Davis, at the age of 33 built his coal-powered steam
engine at his foundry on the northwest corner of King and
Newberry streets in York. It was finished in July 1832, and
taken by horse drawn wagon to Baltimore (no trains connected the cities until 1838). Davis named the locomotive
the "York" after the town. Soon after winning the contest,
Davis was made manager of the B&O shops, and set about
building more engines.
The York weighed three and one - half tons was able to
negotiate the sharpest curves on the B&O track outside
Baltimore at the fifteen mph and obtain speed bursts of
thirty-five mph on the straightaways. Further, the York
could be operated on $16 a day, less than half the cost of
equivalent horse-based propulsion. Most of the rail service
of the B&O at that time was horse drawn cars.
While testing one of his locomotives on Sept. 27, 1835,
he was killed. He was 40 years old. Almost 100 years after
he started his invention, a school was built in his honor in
York's east end.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad or B&O, was the first
U.S. public Railroad. Chartered in 1827 by a group of Baltimore businessmen to regain trans-Allegheny traffic lost to
the newly opened Erie Canal. Construction began in 1828,
and the 1St division opened on May 1830. Horses were the
1st source of power, but the successful trial run of Peter
Cooper's Tom Thumb (wood burning steam engine) in August 1830, brought the change to steam locomotives. The
B&O expanded steadily and reached St. Louis in 1857. By
the end of the 19th century, the B&O railroad had achieved
most of its present 5,800 miles of track and connected with
Chicago, Philadelphia, and N.Y. City. By the mid-1 900s it
had become mainly a freight carrier. Faced with financial
difficulties, the B&O merged with the Chesapeake and Ohio
in 1965. The B&O was the 1st railroad to use coal-powered
steam, publish a timetable, use electric locomotives and
specialty cars (e.g., dining and baggage), and to run fully
air-conditioned trains.

On February 21, the AFS 1 OE MACT Ad-hoc Committee submilled its formal comments on the pending iron and steel Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) Standards to the
U.S. EPA. These new standards regulating the emissions of hazardous air pollutants from iron and steel foundries were officially
proposed by EPA in December, which opened a 60-day public
comment period.
"While we are far from finished with the process, the formal
comments lay the foundation for the next steps," said Gary
Mosher, AFS vice president-environment, health and safety. "As
with the comments, the AFS IOE MACT Ad-hoc Committee will
continue to play a key role in working with the EPA to resolve our
issues and shape a set of final standards that reflect foundry practices and meet the needs of the Clean Air Act."
The formal comments issued by the AFS committee (and other
AFS MACI-related information) are available on the AFS website
at www.afsinc.org/mact . "These standards will have a great impact
on our industry, more so than when the original Clean Air Act was
implemented in the early 1970s," said Committee Chairman Gary
Thoe, ThyssenKrupp Waupaca Foundry, Inc.
During the comment period on the proposed rule, more than 80
organizations and individuals filed formal public comments. More
than fifty were foundries or foundry-related organizations detailing
the difficulties this proposed rule presents the U.S. metalcasting
industry. The majority of the balance of the comments were from
non-government organizations that believe the proposed rule wasn't providing enough regulation.
The next step for the MACT Ad-hoc committee is to respond to EPA and their requests for more information concerning
the formal comments that were submitted. U.S. EPA has set a goal
to publish the standard by August 30, 2003. Legally, EPA must
have a final rule published by October 30, 2003.
Despite the efforts of the Ad-hoc Committee and its negotiations,
it still is expected that the debate over the proposed rule will not
end with the technical arguments, and the publishing of a final
rule. "As optimistic as we can be regarding the success of our efforts, it will be naive to not anticipate that as an industry we will
have to file a court challenge once the final rules are published,"
said Thoe.

In celebration of their 70th anniversary Boose Aluminum Foundry Co., Inc. of Reamstown, PA, East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, will be having an
Open House,
Everyone is welcome, foundry "people" as well as the general
public. The tours will be provided during production hours between 8:00 am-2:00 pm on Saturday, May 17, 2003. The foundry is located at 77 North Reamstown Road, Reamstown, PA.
Groups of 4-8 people will be guided through the facility on an
approximate one hour tour. Complimentary food & door prizes
will be available to all after the tour., Door Prizes will be selected

Chairman's Message
It is hard to believe that my term as chairman will be
coming to an end in a few weeks. The year has gone by very
quickly! It has been an exciting year serving as chairman for
the Keystone Chapter of the AFS.
As I conclude my term as chairman, I need to take a moment and thank the entire board of directors and committee
members for their dedication and continued support of our
chapter. I would like to thank all of the guest speakers for
their time and knowledge of the trade. We were all able to
learn valuable information from each of their presentations.
It was a disappointment to see that many members do not
take advantage of coming out and learning more about our
industry and changing technology. Finally, thank you to all
of the members for your continued support. I look forward to
seeing you at all the events next year!
I must extend a special thanks to Rick Boyd for his guidance during my term as chairman. Many people do not realize how involved Rick is with not only this organization but
also others in our area that keep him very busy. He has never
hesitated to help me out when help was needed. Thank you,
Rick.
As this year comes to an end, I must remind everyone that
we are already in the process of arranging next year's events.
Next year promises to be an exciting year for us. The year
will begin with our annual golf outing in September. We are
also in the process of scheduling a joint meeting with the Lehigh Valley Foundryman's Association with a tour of Mack
Trucks, Inc. in Macungie, PA. This tour will be in October.
Information will be forthcoming with date and time. The
tour will be limited to a maximum of 60 people so please
make sure to book your reservations promptly!
I give my regards and best wishes to all. Alas, the time
has come to pass the gavel to Mark Bidoli. I wish you the
best on your term as chairman!

As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles
you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first
time a hapless first mate came below at night with
a lantern - well I don't have to explain.
Several ships were destroyed in this manner
before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always
stamped with the term "Ship High In Transit",
which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough
off the lower decks so that any water that came
into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo
and start the production of methane.
Thus evolved the term "S.H.l.T," which has
come down through the centuries and is in
(common) use to this very day.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had
to be transported by means of ship. It was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large
shipments of manure were common. The manure
was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a
lot less than when wet, was easier to handle and
stunk less. Once at sea, in a leaky wooden ship, it
usually got wet. When wet it not only became
heavier, but the process of fermentation began, of
which a by-product is methane gas.

You probably did not know the true history of
this word. Neither did I. I always thought it was a
golf term.
What has this got to do with foundries, well
nothing, however most of us are terrible golfers.
