DESCRIPTION
AP Armaflex and AP Armaflex SS Self-Seal
Pipe Insulations are 25/50-rated flexible
elastomeric thermal insulations, black in color,
supplied as tubing in popular sizes up to 6"
IPS. (See wall thicknesses, next page.) The
expanded closed-cell structure of AP
Armaflex makes it an efficient insulation. It is
manufactured without the use of CFC’s,
HCFC’s or HFC’s. It is also formaldehyde free,
dust free, fiber free and resists mold and
mildew.
AP Armaflex Pipe Insulation, through 1″ wall
thickness has a flame-spread index of less
than 25 and a smoke-developed index of less
than 50 as tested by ASTM E 84 and
CAN/ULC S-102, “Method of Test for Surface
Burning Characteristics of Building Materials.”
AP Armaflex and AP Armaflex SS are
approved through continuing supervision by
Factory Mutual Approvals and consistently
provide actual values on these key
performance criteria for mechanical system
insulation:
Thermal Conductivity: 0.27 BTU-in/hr. ft2 °F
Water Vapor Permeability: 0.08 perm-inch
Fire Rating: will not contribute significantly
to fire (simulated end use testing)
Factory Mutual Approvals has determined that
AP Armaflex will not contribute significantly to
fire through tests deemed more predictive of
end use performance than ASTM E 84.
Factory Mutual Approvals supervision
includes continuing testing by these methods:
UBC 26-3 Room Fire Test Method and the
Factory Mutual Approvals Full Scale
Horizontal Simulated Pipe Chase Test.
Numerical flammability ratings alone may not
define the performance of products under
actual fire conditions. They are provided only
for use in the selection of products to meet
limits specified.
USES
AP Armaflex Pipe Insulations are used to
retard heat gain and control condensation drip
from cold-water plumbing, chilled-water, and
refrigeration lines. They also efficiently reduce
heat flow for hot-water plumbing and liquidheating and dual-temperature piping. (See
chart next page for recommended
temperature usage range.)
NOTE: Armaflex insulation products must be installed according
to “Installation of Armaflex Insulations.” Proper installation is
required to assure Armaflex insulation performance.
2
For use on cold pipes, AP Armaflex
thicknesses have been calculated to control
condensation on the insulation outer
surface, as shown in the table of thickness
recommendations.
RESISTANCE TO MOISTURE
VAPOR FLOW
The closed-cell structure of AP Armaflex
Insulations effectively retards the flow of
moisture vapor. AP Armaflex is considered a
low-transmittance vapor retarder. AP Armaflex
normally requires no supplemental vaporretarder protection. Additional vapor-retarder
protection may be necessary for AP Armaflex
when installed on very low temperature piping
or where exposed to continually high humidity
conditions.
APPLICATION
AP Armaflex Pipe Insulation in unslit tubular
form can be slipped onto piping before it is
connected, or it can be slit lengthwise and
snapped over piping already connected.
Apply AP Armaflex SS Insulation by placing
the slit tubing over pipe. Peel release liners
from adhesive surfaces and apply firm
pressure along entire longitudinal joint. Secure
butt ends using Armaflex 520 Adhesive or,
where a low V.O.C. adhesive is required,
Armaflex 520 BLV Adhesive.
Fitting covers may be fabricated from
metered-cut AP Armaflex Self-Seal tubing.
Fabricate miter-cut fitting covers and
assemble with Armaflex 520 or 520 BLV
Adhesive. Install over pipe fitting and seal to
adjoining sections of pipe insulation with 520
or 520 BLV Adhesive. 520 Adhesives are
contact adhesives; therefore, in all cases, both
surfaces to be joined are coated with
adhesive.
AP Armaflex is designed for installation above
ground. Indoors, no protective finish is
required. Outdoors, a weather-resistant
protective finish is to be applied. The
recommended protective finish is WB
Armaflex Finish; however, other compatible
finish systems are not ruled out.

On the heating cycle, AP Armaflex Pipe
Insulation will withstand temperatures as
high as 220°F (105°C). 520 Adhesive may
be used with pipe insulation applications
up to 220°F (105°C) or, where a low V.O.C.
adhesive is required, use Armaflex 520 BLV
Adhesive.
2
At -20°F (-29°C), flexible AP Armaflex
Insulation becomes hard and, as
temperatures drop below -20°F (29°C),
will be increasingly brittle; however, this
hardening characteristic does not affect
thermal efficiency or water vapor
permeability. For applications of -40°F to
-70°F (-40°C to -57°C), contact Armacell.

DESCRIPTION
AC Armaflex Coil is a system designed
for convenience and labor savings with
superior toughness. It is provided in
continuous-length coils, designed to
minimize waste, reduce butt joints, and is
packaged in easy-handle, easy-store cartons.
The pipe insulation is tough but flexible elastomeric
thermal insulation, black in color, supplied as continuouslength unslit tubing in nominal wall thicknesses of 3/8″ (10mm)
and 1/2″ (13mm) in popular sizes up to 1-1/8″ ID. Its closed cell
structure makes it an efficient insulation with the proven
performance of Armaflex. It is manufactured without the use of
CFC’s, HCFC’s or HFC’s. It is also formaldehyde free, dust free, fiber
free and resists mold and mildew.
USES
AC Armaflex Coil is engineered for air conditioning applications in
which speed, ease of installation, convenient handling and on-site
durability are of primary importance. It slides on the pipe easier,
making the installation job faster and more profitable for contractors.
INSTALLATION
AC Armaflex uncoils easily from its convenient carton, so it can be
cut to desired lengths for longer runs with fewer seams. It also
slides on the pipe easier, making the installation job faster and
more profitable for contractors. The specially formulated lubricating
powder effectively reduces friction, and relaxed I.D. tolerances
accommodate elbows and fittings. Its thermal conductivity (0.27),
WVT (0.80), flame spread and smoke developed index (25/50) and
temperature use ranges (-70°F to +220°F) are the same as AP
Armaflex. Installs with simple hand tools and Armaflex 520
Adhesive or, where a low V.O.C. adhesive is required, use
Armaflex 520 BLV Adhesive. 520 Adhesives are contact adhesives;
therefore, in all cases both surfaces to be joined are coated with
adhesive.

Fire Rating: Will not contribute significantly to fire.
(simulated end-use testing)
Factory Mutual Approvals has determined that
AP Armaflex will not contribute significantly to
fire through tests deemed more predictive of
the end use performance than ASTM E 84.
Factory Mutual Approvals supervision includes
continuing testing by these methods: UBC 26-3
Room Fire Test Method and the Factory Mutual
Approvals Full-Scale Horizontal Simulated Pipe
Chase Test.
Numerical flammability ratings alone
may not define the performance
of products under actual fire
conditions. They are provided
only for use in the selection of
products to meet limits specified.
USES
AP Armaflex is used to retard heat
gain and control condensation drip from
chilled water and refrigeration systems. It
also efficiently reduces heat flow on hot
systems.
AP Armaflex Sheet/Roll Insulations are
particularly adaptable for insulating ductwork,
large piping and fittings, tanks, and vessels.
Their flexibility allows application to curved
and irregular surfaces. They are very
adaptable to making all types of fitting cover
insulations.
The recommended temperature usage range
for AP Armaflex Sheet Insulation is -70°F to
+220°F (-57°C to +105°C) according to
method of application. AP Armaflex sheet with
6
full adhesive coverage, and AP Armaflex SelfAdhering Sheet, may be used on surfaces with
operating temperatures up to 180°F (82°C).
When used for pipe insulation with adhesive
adhering seams and joints only, Armaflex Sheet
can be applied to lines that will operate to a limit
of 220°F (105°C).
For use on cold surfaces, AP Armaflex
thicknesses have been calculated to control
condensation on the insulation outer surface, as
shown in the table of thickness
recommendations.
RESISTANCE TO MOISTURE
VAPOR FLOW
The closed-cell structure of Armaflex Insulations
effectively retards the flow of moisture vapor,
and Armaflex is considered a low-transmittance
vapor retarder. For many applications, Armaflex
needs no supplementary protection.
Additional vapor-retarder protection may be
necessary for Armaflex when install on very lowtemperature surfaces or piping or where
exposed to continually high humidity conditions.
APPLICATION
AP Armaflex Sheet is installed using Armaflex
520 Adhesive or, where a low V.O.C. adhesive is
required, use Armaflex 520 BLV Adhesive. For
application to large flat or curved metal surfaces
such as ducts, very large pipes, tanks, and
vessels, full adhesive coverage is used. For
applications as pipe insulation and fitting covers,
only the seams and joints are adhered with
adhesive. 520 Adhesives are contact adhesives;
therefore, in all cases, both surfaces to be joined
are coated with adhesive.
AP Armaflex Self-Adhering Sheet has a factoryapplied adhesive system with long-term
performance similar to 520 Adhesive. It can be
applied to clean, non-oily metal surfaces. Simply
remove a portion of the release liner, position
sheet, adhere one edge, and then just peel and
press. Seams and joints are adhered using 520
or 520 BLV Adhesive.
AP Armaflex Sheet and Self-Adhering Sheet
insulations are designed for installation above
ground. Indoors, no protective finish is required.
Outdoor, a weather-resistant protective finish is
to be applied. The recommended protective
finish is WB Armaflex; however, other compatible
finish systems are not ruled out.

HOSPITAL GRADE
DESCRIPTION
AP Armaflex SA is a black flexible elastomeric thermal insulation with a self-adhering backing. It
is a closed-cell elastomeric foam that can reduce or eliminate conditions amplifying biological
contamination and bioaerosols in commercial air systems.
Engineered to control condensation, AP Armaflex SA has an inherent vapor retarder and
requires no additional mastics or coatings. It is nonwicking and has a very low rate of water
absorption. It continues to prevent water infiltration even after incidental mechanical abuse.
The surface of the insulation is smooth, so that dirt and debris that may enter the air stream tend
not to accumulate. The surface is durable and erosion-resistant. AP Armaflex SA is also cleanable
and washable, providing a basis for continuing system hygiene. With its self-adhering backing,
AP Armaflex SA is fast and easy to install and requires no mechanical fasteners in systems
operating at 4,000 FPM (20.3 m/second) or below. The expanded closed-cell structure of
Armaflex makes it an efficient insulation. It is mnufactured without the use of CFC’s, HCFC’s. It
is also formaldehyde free, fiber free, dust free and resists mold and mildew.
AP Armaflex SA Duct Liner is supplied in self-adhering sheets 36″ x 48″ (.915 m x 1.22 m), in
nominal wall thicknesses of 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″ and 1″ (10, 13, 19 and 25 mm). Acoustical
performance is comparable to half-inch thick fiberglass insulation. The product is approved
through continuing supervision by Factory Mutual Approvals.
USES
AP Armaflex SA Duct Liner is a suitable replacement for traditional duct liner in air handlers,
VAV units, ducts, and other air system components requiring condensation control and moisture
and damage resistance. It meets the requirements of NFPA 90A, NFPA 90B for Duct Coverings
and Linings and UL 181.

INSULATION PIPE HANGERS
DESCRIPTION
Armafix Insulation Pipe Hangers are quick,
innovative alternatives to traditional block
and dowel pipe supports. The engineered,
foam-to-foam solutions provide optimum
load bearing while protecting against
thickness compression and condensation
gaps that can compromise system integrity.
USES
Armafix is used to support insulated pipes
with pre-insulated hangers that retard heat
gain and control condensation drip from
cold-water plumbing, chilled-water and
refrigeration lines. It is engineered from
Armaflex or NH/Armaflex insulation, with
polyurethane inserts 30mils thick and
aluminum (IPH) or stainless steel (NPH)
jacket. It is single-piece construction, selfadhesive closure with exclusive foam-tofoam bond. Armafix (IPH) pipe hangers are
available in nominal 3/4″ and 1″ wall
thicknesses with ID’s ranging from 3/8″ ID to
8″ IPS. Also available in nominal 1/2″ wall
thickness by special order. Armaflex NPH:
NH/Armaflex nonhalogen insulation
formulation available in 3/4″ nominal wall
thickness with ID’s ranging from 3/8″ ID to 8″
IPS. Armaflex insulation’s thermal
conductivity resistance to moisture vapor
flow (WVT) and closed cell structure provide
for total system integrity.
EFFICIENT,
FASTER SUPPORT
APPLICATION
Armafix longitudinal seams are selfadhering. The ends are easily sealed with
Armaflex 520 Adhesive or, where a low
V.O.C. adhesive is required, Armaflex 520
BLV Adhesive to ensure a completely sealed
system. For some applications, saddles are
recommended. To minimize the movement of
Armafix, it is recommended that a pair of
non-skid pads, be adhered to the clamps. In
addition to prevent loosening of the clamps,
use of an anti-vibratory fastener, such as a
nylon looking nut, is also recommended.
