N a t i v i t y S c o t t s d a l e . o r g Page 3 A note from Pastor Susan Transforming lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ In the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. - from the Proper Preface for Epiphany, Book of Common Prayer p. 378 The season of Epiphany is a time for remembering how Jesus made himself known to the world as the Light of the World, the eternal light that shines in the darkness. In this time each year, we remember the signs and miracles by which many people in the world came to know and understand Jesus as he truly was – God Incarnate, the Word made flesh. Through the glory of Christ, we can see the glory of God. To understand who God is, we merely have to look at Jesus. One of the questions Jesus asks Simon Peter is, “Who do you say that I am?” This is the question all of us have to answer as followers of Christ. Who do we say Jesus is, and what difference does he make in our lives? How is the light of Christ shining in our lives and through us into the world around us? That question, “Who do you say that I am?” is at the heart of our Christian journey. Who is Jesus and how has he made a difference in our lives? What does his love and his gift of himself mean to us? What times in our lives has he been present with us, teaching us, comforting us, challenging us to new lives and new possibilities? When has he made our lives more difficult? And when has he made them easier? These are questions that I hope all of us will be asking ourselves this spring, in the Lenten season, and beyond. We are planning some Lenten studies and small groups that will give us each new ways to approach these questions and share our thoughts with others, as well as learn from each other. In your worship and prayer, please consider the question of who you say Jesus is, and why he makes a difference to you. Pastor Susan COME TO OUR FIRST PARISH LENTEN RETREAT! Prayer with others is a good way to feel connected to God and your community here at Nativity. Big Fun Bible Movie Night! “Romero” starring Raul Julia is this month's flick for Big Fun Bible Movie Night on Friday, January 15. “Romero" is the 1989 biopic of Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero who was martyred in 1980 while celebrating mass. His beatification by the Roman Catholic Church was finally completed in May 2015. Romero was a bookish don’t-rockthe-boat priest who found his heart changed and his eyes opened when confronted with the injustice and oppression perpetuated by the government of El Salvador in the 1970s. He became a champion of and for the people and his advancement to sainthood after his death had wide public support. Raul Julia portrays the Archbishop quite convincingly in this production which hit the big screen 27 years ago. Showtime is at 6:30. Bring a friend, your favorite beverage and a snack to share. Your hosts Dr. Wayne and David Bolger will provide the popcorn. Bible Study Wednesday presents "The Other Faiths of Abraham" Do you know what Christianity has in common with Judaism and Islam? All 3 religions trace their heritage back to Abraham. Beginning January 13 Bible Study Wednesday will be introducing these other faiths of Abraham in 4 sessions: January 13, 20, 27 and February 3. Class time is 6:30-7:30 p.m. Here is your chance to learn more about these sibling faiths. Recommended reading is “Judaism: A Very Short Introduction” by Norman Solomon and “Islam: A Very Short Introduction” by Malise Ruthven. Each book is available via Amazon for about $11. One of the most exciting music ministry projects in the past year was arranging the year round professional concert series called Arts at Nativity. In partnership with 3rd Ave Arts we worked on tools needed to run a concert series, and we created professionally looking brochures, posters, and marketed our series in the neighborhood. We are in its beginnings, but we have started attracting people from outside of the parish. Another nice element of this collaboration is that recitals function as self-funding outreach for the church - 10% of the ticket sale revenue goes back to the church budget. So far we hosted 4 concerts: vocalist Suzanne Rovani, violinist Daga Suchoń Hobbs and myself in September, Qais Essar on rabab in October, Jacob Adler on piano with ensemble in November, and Bartholomew Faire with Christmas concert in December. We have 5 more scheduled for Spring 2016. Before we joined 3rd Ave Arts we hosted 3 other concerts that happened in the Spring 2015: Phoenix Symphony violinist Levon Zarasian and a pianist Peter Gharibian recital on March 1st, Desert Sun Brass Quintet performance on April 12th, and Fun Choir Concert with tunes by ABBA, Queen, Leonard Cohen, Jackson 5, James Taylor, Sting, The Beatles, and others on May 24th. Reflecting on the hard work of the Adult Choir, which is the core of the music ministry they learned many important repertoire pieces by such composers as Bach, Mozart, Wesley, Händel, Stainer, Tchaikovsky, Haydn, Davies, Rutter, Saint-Saëns, Goss, Ferguson, Hopkins, Gounod, Bruckner, Scarlatti, Purcell, Rachmaninoff, as well as Gospel selections and traditional music. There were two Bishop's visitations on February 8th and December 20th when the choir performed L. Shackley's spiritual “Lord, I Know I Been Changed,” W.A. Mozart's “Laudate Dominum,” and Rachmaninoff's "Bogoroditse Djevo". Apart from the fun concert in May, the Adult Choir performed an extremely moving Veteran’s Day concert on November 7th. Joined by soloists Arijana Lempke and Michael Frongillo, as well as guest instrumentalists, they honored those that fought for our freedom with beautiful music. Adult Choir also entertained all those who came to the December 4th ADVENTure fundraiser with the W W W . N A T I V I T Y favorite Christmas carols sing-along. And last but no least - they performed beautiful and meditative Holy Week and glorious Easter services, as well Christmas celebrations with splendid anthems by Wilberg and Sjolund, accompanied by a woodwind trio. This year choir members continued taking their ministry outside of the church and have joined monthly sing-alongs at the Vi Silverstone Care Center organized by Mary and Alastair Longley-Cooks for the Alzheimer’s patients. The leading soprano Suzanne Rovani worked with us the first half a year, after which she moved back to Chicago for good. Marcy McKee joined us back after a break, and is about to finish her doctoral program at ASU. We are very fortunate to have these two leading singers this year: mezzosoprano Marcy McKee and tenor Michael Frongillo with us. They have been a tremendous asset to our choir - their expertise, talents and wonderful voices made our choir sound more beautiful. Some of our favorite guest musicians came back this year to bring high quality instrumental music: volinist Dagmara Suchon Hobbs, saxophonists Shea Marshall, clarinetists Tim Haas and Josh Bennet, and trumpet player Tim McCarthy. Our very special Nativity musicians are Ann Phillips, who regularly plays the Native American Flute during the Communion time at our 9 a.m. services, and Alastair Longley-Cook who plays his guitars at 10.30 services, and leads a Gospel music sing-along at the Vi Silverstone once a month. What a wonderful year of making music! Big thanks to the Adult Choir members, who make our services so much more beautiful. They come to rehearse every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and sing every Sunday during one of the services. If you would like to join this exciting ministry too, please talk to me after a service, or email me: ilonakubiaczyk-adler@thenativity.net. Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler, DMA S C O T T S D A L E . O R G INVESTOR NEWSLETTER ISSUE N°3 Page 6 FALL 2007 2 0 1 6 Ve s t r y N o m i n e e s Vestry Nominees: we have five candidates for three 3 year terms on the Vestry. Bill Deihl, Jen Goins, Art Graf, Donna Hartz and Alastair Longley-Cook. Their biographies are below. Each member may vote for three. Bill Deihl I have chosen to ‘run’ for a vestry position because I believe as a lifelong Episcopalian with numerous past experiences as a vestry member, participation in the found and start-up of Nativity, a 30+ year experience in management within a large company, and a friendship with many people within our congregation will help me to make positive contributions to our future. My vision is to help Nativity grow and make positive contributions to each of us, our children and grandchildren, and those within our community who need our help while Jen Goins Hello, Jen Goins here, I’m asking to be elected to the vestry. I’ve attended Nativity for over 5 years with my sons, Devin and Colin. With kids in tow, I’ve been involved in the Children’s program at Nativity as an Upper Elementary teacher (now Pepsicola club). I’m also the crazy chick who runs the Nativity Rummage Sale with a great team. (This year February 27…save the date!) I’m impressed how this church has grown and supports so many ministries and supports family and youth opportunities. Our youth can learn from older members on outreach and our older members can learn from youth on the newness of the church experience and excitement. They’re not hyper kids…they are “Episcopal excited”! I’m sure the catch phrase will spread like wildfire. I’ve been a Cub Scout den leader and Pack committee chair for the past 5 years. With Colin crossing over to Boys Scouts, it frees up some of my time. I see the benefit of getting involved to really help an organization. I’d love to hear how you think we can improve Nativity with your help. So, at the next coffee hour look down, spot me and lets talk! Art Graf I am Art Graf, candidate for Vestry here at Nativity. I am a retired financial executive, a cradle Episcopalian and in love with The Lord. In my career, Kathy and I have attended eight parishes, immersed in the service of each. I have served on six vestries and as Treasurer here. My pet ministry is that of children’s Christian formation but have found it difficult to say no to a variety of others. I read recently an article shared by Susan on Facebook. Its writer, an Anglican scholar, predicted the demise of the US Episcopal Church by the year 2040, citing an aging membership and diminishing relevance to today’s young family. I also read about the fate of a mainline Protestant church in one of our hometowns, a vibrant community of 750 members in the 1950’s but shutting its doors in 2015 with a faithful but tired congregation of only 11. I cannot accept such an outcome. Without our bold actions, I am fearful that we might suffer from similar stresses and outcomes over time. I envision my role on the vestry as an advocate for bold initiatives with goals of growing the church through evangelism, strengthening stewardship, building a vibrant service mentality and at the same time preserving the Episcopal Churches unique approach to mission. If you are timid or comfortable or accept the status quo, you should not vote for me. W W W . N A T I V I T Y S C O T T S D A L E . She grew up as a Roman Catholic - was part of a contemporary liturgical choir for three decades and during the 1980’s and 90’s was a part-time youth retreat director. At Nativity she has been a member of the choir, a delegate to the Diocesan Convention, a participant in adult education and prayer programs, and an active member and leader of the Women's Group. She also recently was invited to join the Worship Committee. In the community, she is a member of the Board of Directors for Scottsdale Sister Cities Association, and has been a Steward for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. She is a climatologist with a PhD from ASU, and continues to do research on issues of climate and health in both the U.S. and Kenya. She and her husband are authors of two books on the history of land preservation in Phoenix and Arizona. In Kenya, she works with Scottsdale’s sister city on educational exchanges, on programs aimed at improving health and healthcare delivery, with the Anglican Diocese of Eldoret on a variety of projects, and helps support a fledgling, but growing, rural primary school. Donna is married to George, lives in Scottsdale, and has three children and four grandchildren. “I would be honored to serve on the Vestry, and to use my enthusiasm and skills to strengthen our mission to transform lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ. Alastair Longley-Cook Alastair, a retired actuary, lives nearby Nativity with his wife Mary and two German Shepherds Bella and Zena. He and Mary were among the founding members of Nativity, and currently serve as Chalicists, Lectors, Healing Prayer Leaders, and Lay Eucharist Ministers to housebound and Care Center residents. Alastair has served as Junior Warden and Treasurer of Nativity. His music ministry includes playing guitar at the 10:30 service on Gospel Sunday and in solos, as well as leading monthly gospel music singalongs at the Vi Silverstone Care Center. MARK MILLER: Candidate for Junior Warden I’ve been a lifelong Episcopalian. My wife is Mary Dexter and my daughter is Martha Miller. You probably have seen us all in the choir. We’ve been members of Nativity since shortly after we moved here from Oakland, California in 2009. During our “church shopping” we came to Nativity and decided this is the place for us. We loved the warmth of the people and Susan’s ministry. Prior to coming here we were at St. John’s Oakland for 13 years. During that time I was on the vestry twice and was junior warden once. I also managed the technical infrastructure (computer systems, network, and phone system) from 2003 until we left in 2009. At our church prior to St. John’s I was on the vestry and later served as the treasurer. At Nativity I’m currently a member of the choir, teach upper elementary Sunday school, and manage the computer network and HVAC system. I am very enthusiastic about Nativity’s future and want to be a part of helping it to grow and provide the opportunity for more lives to be transformed. I have worked for APL (American President Lines) since 1984 in many different Information technology positions. My entire career has been in information technology. I’ve also worked for the University of Oklahoma, Visa, and Gap in various technology and management positions. W W W . N A T I V I T Y S C O T T S D A L E . O R G INVESTOR NEWSLETTER P a g e 8 ISSUE N°3 A D V E N Tu r e 2 0 1 5 Wr a p U p FALL 2007 On Friday evening, December 4, 2015, over 100 Nativity members and guests gathered at the church to celebrate the second annual ADVENTure, a gala affair to raise money for our various Outreach ministries. Thanks to the many who participated this year, over $10,000 was raised, a 42% increase over last year! Although fundraising was the primary purpose of this event, those who attended enjoyed fun and fellowship as well. The evening included appetizers, fine dining, and desserts provided by many talented Nativity cooks and kitchen volunteers and served by cheerfully competent Nativity youth volunteers, two no-host bars staffed by spirited bartenders, and a lovely Christmas concert by Ilona and the choir. Thanks to the many generous donors (listed below), both from within and outside the Nativity community, there was an amazing array of silent auction items available for a robust round of bidding. As with any fundraising event, the success of this year’s ADVENTure would not have been achieved without many individuals working together. From the “Save the Date” in July through ticket sales in late October/November, many members solicited and donated auction items from family, friends, and the business community. An astounding 111 items were secured for this event, from several vacation getaways and a letterman jacket from Late Show with David Letterman’s last broadcast, to handmade jewelry and scarves, and beautifully arranged baskets of themed goodies. In addition to these volunteers, many others contributed in various ways, proving that many hands make light work. When a call for help went out, many members responded by helping with decorations and set-up, managing the auction operations, handling the invoice/payment transactions and auction item redemptions, and helping with clean-up. Finally, this event owes a debt of gratitude to the clergy and Mina Rafferty, our office administrator, as a result of their wholehearted support and creative, dedicated commitment to ADVENTure. Thank you one and all. Of course, the true beneficiaries of this event are the many men, women, and children who are and will be served by Nativity’s various Outreach ministries. Members of Nativity volunteer throughout the year, collecting presents and gift cards for the Christmas Giving Program and the Back-to-School drive, preparing packages for distribution to our troops, participating in regular mission trips to Navajoland and Barrio La Laguna, building homes with needy families under the direction of “Habitat for Humanity”, and serving with various other Outreach ministries. The money raised at ADVENTure will help provide critically necessary financial support, which allows these organizations to thrive so that we have plentiful ways to “transform lives with the love of Jesus Christ.” Truly, ADVENTure reminds us that we are blessed to be part of a sharing and committed community. So, what’s a Quarter Auction? Basically what happens when an auction marries a raffle! For a quarter, you can get a chance to enter a raffle for some cool items that have been donated. Each person gets a number, a numbered “paddle” and stack of numbered slips of paper with your number on it. To bid on an item, you raise your paddle, and two auctioneers will come with bowls – one to collect as many “chances” as you want to put towards an item, and the second “auctioneer” will collect a quarter per “chance”. Some “luxury” items may cost two quarters per chance, but the vast percentage will be one quarter. Once all the bids are collected, a number will be pulled from the bowl – and if it is YOUR number, you get to take it home! Last year some of the items donated were candles, jewelry, nick-knacks, outfits for an “American Girl” sized doll; Wine. We will be collecting items for the Auction: Do you have a Christmas gift you didn’t like? Maybe a hostess gift you won’t use? jewelry you don’t wear? Handbag that isn’t your style? How about that fancy box of Christmas candy that is calling your name but you really shouldn’t be eating? As they say, one woman’s trash is another’s treasure. For tickets go to artsatnativity.org or pay at the door ($20 adults / $5 students & children) Sleeping Bag Drive for homeless youth: The month of January, to match up with Epiphany, the magi took gifts to a stable to one who had none, we are asking that we share and give a new sleeping bag to a youth that is sleeping on the street. The Sleeping Bag Drive will support One in Ten, a local organization serving gay and lesbian homeless youth. While gay and lesbians make up 10% of the youth population, they make up 40% of the homeless population. One in Ten estimates that over 21,000 gay youth in our state are homeless. One in Ten works at the systemic level to get them educations and jobs, but it all starts with food and a bed— a sleeping bag from you. This is done with social workers, educators, job training, and housing assistance; all short-term services that put them back into society as adults or into family care. These are youth that have been forgotten by family or worse yet kicked out of their homes at very young ages. They request new bags to raise self-esteem and for health regulations at shelters. During the month of January, please bring a new, adult sleeping bag for us to help these youth start a new path to success and find some comfort in the coldest months of the year. It is easy to take a place to sleep for granted, let alone a warm place to sleep. Drop-off new adult sleeping bags off from January 10-31. Our Music Director Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler's CD Our Music Director Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler's CD has been published! She is hosting a release party on January 31st at 3 p.m. Ilona traveled last summer to record an album on the 1719 Hildebrandt organ in Pasłęk, Poland. Her CD "Antique Sound Palette" has arrived, and she is hosting a release concert and party on Sunday, January 31st at 3 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Sun City (17200 N Del Webb Blvd, Sun City, AZ 85373). A half-an-hour recital with the excerpts from the CD will be followed by a presentation of photos and videos from the trip, and a reception. Join her for this fine celebration of music and art! We contacted the Scottsdale Police and they were excited to have us make 100 teddy bears to be used for domestic violence, accidents and other calls. Warren, the Rescue Bear, is a simple and easy bear to create and also gives opportunities for non-sewers to help: we need cutters, stuffers and sewers to complete this meaningful project. And a great bonus: once the bears are completed, a few police officers and a photographer will come to the church for a photo op when receiving the bears—what great publicity for Nativity! Our project work dates are Jan. 12th, 19th and 26th from 10-12 at the church, so if you are interested in joining this fun group, show up or contact: Barbara Worthington 480.575.7830 bandb718@msn.com Bag-A-Meal: Sandwiches for the Homeless VOLUNTEERS NEEDED On January 5th, 13 Nativity volunteers made 200-bagged meals for the homeless for our 1st month of helping the Phoenix Rescue Mission. Marty and Bob Christopher sponsored January’s sandwich-making day, which was filled with messy hands and happy hearts. We filled 200 bags with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, three cookies, an apple, two fun-sized pieces of chocolate, a napkin and a bottle of water. We also placed an inspirational quote written by the Christophers in each bag. Phoenix Rescue Mission is a Christian-based organization that is committed to helping the homeless and those in need in our community. This project specifically brings Mission workers in contact with homeless on the street in hopes that the homeless will learn of the Mission’s facilities and programs and seek out their help. Our support is an important piece of this effort. Interested in helping? Please contact: Barbara or Bill Worthington 480.575.7830 W W W . N A T I V I T Y S C O T T S D A L E . This year we are going to Cortez, Colorado and intend to do approximately 288 hours of service in this diverse and poverty stricken area. One of the projects that only exists because youth groups like ours volunteer to run it during the summer is a Kids Club for children who live in two trailer parks. This provides a safe and fun environment for children when school is not in session. Population served is diverse and includes children from both the Ute and Navaho Nations. On Mission Trip we not only learn the value of serving others in need, but we have worship and educational time that helps us connect with those we are helping with a spirit of love learning to see God in all those around us. It is a transforming experience for everyone. You have three opportunities to support this amazing outreach endeavor! 1. SuperBowl Snack Packs are Back! Snack packs will include: popcorn tortilla chips crackers humus guacamole summer sauage cheese and home baked cookies Buy one Snack Pack for $20 . . . OR . . . for the small donation of $300 you can purchase snack packs for 15 parishioners (you can choose who or leave it to us to pick recipients) The way we make the bulk of our funds is when five people choose to send a snack pack to one person! We make one snack pack for that person and put five people's names on the card! We are hoping that this fundraising event will be successful enough that we will be able to limit our constant request for money and focus on service and discipleship this Spring. So buy one for your own Super Bowl party! Buy one for your Neighbors or Friends! 2. Be sure to sign up to come to the Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper! This is a wonderful Opportunity for all ages to come together and have a meal! We thank the men's group for cooking and the youth group will set up, clear, clean up and help with the children's activity! $5 per person or $15 per family! Sign up in the Parish Hall! 3. A scholarship fund has been established to help youth group members who have special financial need to go on Mission Trip. Please contact Shelley Byrnes at shelleybyrnes@thenativity.net if you'd like to donate to this fund. Any funds not needed this year will be forwarded towards next year in a dedicated account. W W W . Through a dedicated and closed Facebook group, coffee dates and quarterly dinners planned for college breaks, this ministry allows young people to maintain a connection with the church and continue spiritual development and fellowship after High School graduation and during their young adulthood when most people tend to fall away. The Holiday dinner was cozy and fun! The next dinner will be in March but there will be a virtual lenten study happening on the Facebook page as we join the Society of Saint John the Evangelist to discuss and practice Growing a Rule of Life.
