2010 WALK OF LIFE supports cardiac health, education and rehabilitation
26th annual walking/running event to raise $1 million nationally
to fight Canada’s leading cause of mortality
Toronto, ON – April 20, 2010 – On Saturday, May 15, an anticipated 1,800 GTA residents will join the
2010 WALK OF LIFE. More than 35 hospitals and cardiac rehab centres across Canada will also stage their
own WALKs OF LIFE as part of the national campaign. Funds raised support patient and public awareness,
medical equipment, facilities, professional education and graduate scholarships. The WALK OF LIFE
generates awareness for cardiac rehabilitation as an important tool for recovery from a cardiac event as well
as a preventative measure for heart disease.
Participants will take part in either a 3 kilometre or 5 kilometre walk or the new 5 kilometre run. The events
kick off with a “heart healthy” breakfast, donated by Whole Foods, and will take place at 8 a.m. on the
mezzanine level of the Ontario Science Centre. Entertainment will include educational activities,
presentations in the auditorium, celebrities, members of the Toronto All-Star Big Band, Scooby-Doo,
Carlton the Bear, the Raptor and members of the Raptors Dance Pak to warm up the participants before the
walk/run through E.T. Seton Park. And Roger Petersen, anchor/reporter CityNews, will emcee the program.
“Heart disease is the number one cause of mortality among Canadians and it is also the number one disease
affecting women,” said Barbara Kennedy, Executive Director, Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada. “As a
special focus on women, participants who raise $100 or more in pledges and students who raise $50 or
more will receive a free Polar Heart Sports bra and the registration fee will be waived.”
National sponsors include TRIDEL; Rogers; Universal Workers Union LIUNA Local 183;
Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life; The Printing House; The Brand Factory and the Bank of
Montreal. New this year and as another national sponsor, the MIKEY Network will donate defibrillators to
participating cardiac rehab centres across the country.
“The WALK OF LIFE is a family event highlighting the importance of a healthy lifestyle that has to start at
an early age and continue throughout one’s life to prevent heart disease,” said Leo DelZotto, President of
Tridel Corporation and President of the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada’s Board of Directors for the
past 10 years. “This event brings people together to spend time with friends and family, have fun and learn
about the risk factors associated with heart disease, what to do about it and where to find proper care.”
Registered walkers and runners will enjoy a number of complementary services and products including
breakfast, a cinch backpack, a pedometer, and Science Centre parking. In addition, participants who remain
after the event will receive a 20 per cent discount off the entrance fee to the Science Centre and the famous
“Harry Potter “-the Exhibition for the day. The WALK OF LIFE is free for children 12 and under and kids
are eligible to participate in the Healthy Heart colouring contest for a chance to win some fabulous prizes.
Donors who contribute $100 or more on the Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada’s website before the
April 27th “Early Bird” deadline will have the registration fee waived and will be eligible to win a Vermont
Castings Barbeque valued at $1,200.

2010 Walk of Life
By Barbara Kennedy
Changing with the times, yet going back in time back to honour its humble beginnings The inside story about the newly re-branded CARDIAC HEALTH FOUNDATION OF
CANADA for “Prevention, Education & Cardiac Rehabilitation” & the re-birth of its major
campaign - the WALK OF LIFE!
The 2010 WALK OF LIFE is an annual
event put on by the Cardiac Health
Foundation of Canada. An emphasis is
placed on participation by the whole
family and all ages and stages of life are
represented. This year is particularly
special with the Foundation going back
to its roots by returning to the site of
the original WALK OF LIFE over 26 years
ago! The original WALK OF LIFE raised
funds for one cardiac rehabilitation
program and over the past few years it
has grown into a National campaign
helping programs all across the country.
Nowadays the funds raised are
distributed to over 40 cardiac
rehabilitation programs across Canada
for medical equipment, facilities, patient
& public information, research and
professional education. In addition, four
graduate scholarships of $3,000 each
are given out at the annual CACR
Conference ( Canadian Association of
Cardiac Rehabilitation) And with heart
disease being the number one cause of
mortality and with the aging population,
the prevention aspect is as important as
the follow-up treatment.
Spaces are limited and admittance will
be capped at 1800. A special early bird
registration fee is being offered to those
who register by April 20th, 2010. The
day has been changed to Saturday from
Sunday to accommodate people who
intend on using public transportation as
it is available earlier in the morning. And
the event is set to begin earlier and
finish earlier also.
This year’s WALK OF LIFE on May 15
promises to be a SOLD OUT event with
all the new ideas and incentives being
offered. Eager participants have already
signed on to reserve their spot – and
each person receives a backpack,
pedometer, fabulous breakfast,
entertainment, complimentary
parking …and even a FREE Polar
Heart SPORTS BRA *! (*based on raising
$100 minimum in donations for adults;
$50 for students)
“The Computer Aging Machine” (age
your facial features 30 years!)
Other changes include the new
LOCATION AND DATE. The new date is
in the middle of May rather than the end
of April to ensure nicer weather. The
new venue is the Ontario Science Centre
and the new park is ET Seton Park – part
of the Sunnybrook Park system. A
liaison has been established with the
Ontario Science to make the event
educational as well as entertaining.
Activities are being offered in addition
to the WALK for both kids and adults to
accommodate everyone’s needs –
particularly the elderly & disabled...
Some of these include:
E² SCIENCE CENTRE MODULES:
“George The Human Torso” (up-close,
hands on interaction)
“Interactive Experiments”
Special “Body Works” Show in the OSC
Auditorium – OSC Scientists present an
entertaining look at the anatomy and
physiology of the human body. Observe
Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada
real mammalian organs and use
technology to observe the HUMAN
HEART. Repeated again after the walk at
11:15am.
And, in addition a special 20%
discounted general entrance fee to
the OSC is being offered after the
WALK for all participants
The most dramatic addition is a new
5KM RUN! This is being added to the
3km WALK and 5 km WALK.
Extraordinary prizes will be awarded to
the Top 3 Men and Women Runners (1st
place: 2 lower bowl Tickets; 2nd & 3rd
place: $50 merchandise gift
certificates)
With all these changes there are still
many continuing traditions and
happenings. The Cardiac Health
Foundation of Canada is thankful to
their generous sponsors, loyal donors
and wonderful volunteers. National
Sponsors include: TRIDEL, ROGERS
Cable Communications, the MIKEY
Network, Universal Workers Union
LIUNA Local 183, The Printing House,
Great -West Life, London Life and
Canada Life, The
Brand Factory and Bank of Montreal. A
heart healthy breakfast will again be
supplied by WHOLE FOODS and
ParticipACTION is again donating
pedometers to all participants. In
addition, more fabulous draw prizes,
outstanding fundraising incentive
prizes, contests and celebrities will still
be a part of the day. A special gift from
POLAR CANADA - Polar Heart Sports
Bra (retail value $49.00) will be available
at registration as part of the incentive
package.
Returning and new Local Sponsors
include:
Travelers Canada, Active Green &
Ross, Mercedes-Benz Downtown,

The Mikey Network: Supporters of the Walk of Life
The Mikey Network was named for Mike Salem – a partner in Heathwood Homes
and The Heron Group of Companies. In the summer of 2002, Mike was on a golf course
in the beautiful Muskokas. He hit his first shot, drove up to his second and then his
heart skipped a beat. Miles away from help, Mike passed away doing what he loved best,
playing golf.
Mike was known for his compassion and consideration for his family, friends and
colleagues, so we felt that helping others in his memory would be a fitting tribute. In
2003, The Mikey Network was established by Heathwood and Heron in memory of our
dear friend and partner. No one knows whether a defibrillator could have helped to save
Mike’s life, but in his name, we place Mikeys in as many public places as possible, so
that other cardiac arrest victims may have a second chance.
The first year, we committed $50,000 raised at a golf tournament to the Cardiac
Safe City Program. Since then, with the help of dedicated volunteers and community
partners, the Network has grown beyond our wildest hopes. As of Spring 2008, the
Network has committed over 400 units, with a total value of just over $1 million dollars.
This represents an amazing journey and honours a remarkable man – Mike Salem.
