Dr. Tekwani is an ophthalmologist that practices at Tekwani Vision Center. The titles of his presentations were “Advanced Treatment Options in Ocular Surface Disease” and “A Primer on Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery.” Dr. Tekwani began his presentation of “Advanced Treatment Options in Ocular Surface Disease” by discussing the applications of using an Amniotic Membrane. The surgical indications for Amniotic Membrane are pterygium excision, corneal ulcers, chemical burns, bullous keratopathy, dermoids, and conjunctivochalasis. Amniotic Membrane was originally tried in the 1940’s, but without having the ability to preserve it properly it did not work very well. It was re-visited in the 1990’s and that is when it started taking on a more lasting role in surface disease treatment. The amniotic membrane described is produced by IOP Ophthalmics. The technology is called Ambio or Ambiodry and is a dehydrated amniotic membrane that comes from donors. It is dehydrated in a way that it maintains its cytokines and growth factors. There are four different devices available from IOP Ophthalmics. Two are square tissue pieces that can be cut and used as needed and the other two are disks. The difference in the pieces is the thickness in the tissue. Continued on next page Tekwani Tekwani cont. The surface of the eye basically is made up of conjunctival epithelium, corneal epithelium, and stem cells. This makes the amniotic membrane suitable because it has an intact epithelial layer, a dense connective tissue basement membrane, and a fibroblastic network that helps to proliferate and heal tissues that are diseased. Originally the membrane was sutured down, but now this has evolved into using glue called Tisseel. It is biodegradable, lasts for 5-10 days and then disappears, and provides much better comfort for patients than sutures. Next, slides/cases were presented that demonstrated the effective use of amniotic membranes with pterygium removal and corneal ulcers. The second presentation was “A Primer on Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery.” This procedure is now available in St. Louis and is something that will become more popular as time goes along. It is typically not going to be covered by insurance. Average cost will likely be in the $600- $800 range. The laser application is designed to assist with cataract surgery. It provides improved precision and makes outcomes more consistent and predictable. There are three main applications in cataract surgery: capsulotomy, nucleus fragmentation, and corneal incisions. It is not a replacement for the phaco system, as it will not remove the cataract. Dr. Tekwani then presented cases and videos of the femtosecond laser in use during cataract surgery. Theh presentation provided one hour C.E. credit. Many thanks to Dr. Tekwani for his presentation and co-hosting the evening with Lisa Salmon of IOP Ophthalmics. ### Drs. Jason Riley, Kim Layfield and Karen Rosen THANKS FROM THE UMSL-AOSA CHAPTER The University of Missouri-St, Louis College of Optometry AOSA chapter held its annual Corneal Classic golf scramble on April 27TH this year and it was a great success! The tournament was held at Normandie Golf Club and close to sixty golfers participated. Many optometry students as well as optometrists and suppliers around the area also turned out for the event. Although the weather did not cooperate, the golfers played through the rain and made it back to the pavilion where they we met with catering by the famous Pappy’s Smokehouse. After dinner everyone gathered around as we raffled off some amazing prizes. The winners of the Optic Cup this year were Dr. Tom Cullinane, Dan Cullinane, Tim Cunoy and Steve Milton with an outstanding score of 61 ! A portion of the golf tournament’s proceeds will be donated to the St. Louis Society for the Blind and will also help support events such as the Eyeball, a formal held in honor of the graduating fourth year students. The UMSL AOSA chapter would like to thank all the golfers, hole sponsors, and volunteers who made this beautiful day so enjoyable. Andy Toebben, Class of 2015 Corneal Classic Chair ### Drs. Jamie Gold and Marisa O’Brien CO-MANAGEMENT REPORT Drew Biondo, O.D. Lipview/Lipiflow co-management opportunities are currently available through Mulqueeny Eye Centers for patients with moderate to severe MGD. This safe and effective treatment clears blocked meibomian glads and offers instate symptomatic relief. Plesae e-mail or call Drew Biondo (ajbiondo@surevision.us) or Sean Mulqueeny for details. 314 542-3600 ### Drs. Don Walter and Gary DeLancey Drs. Tom Hlefrich and Eric Polk MOA TRUSTEE REPORT Drs. Tom Cullinane & Robert Goerss Keyperson System: Please contact Tom Cullinane to be sure that you are signed up to be a keyperson for your legislator. Many districts have changed and. therefore, you may have a different legislator than previously. It is critical that all SLOS members participate in the keyperson system as there are many new State Representatives and Senators with whom to build relationships. Legislation: The eye drop prescription bill passed out of both the Senate and the House and now awaits signing at the Governor’s desk. This bill was supported by both optometry and ophthalmology and would allow patients to renew their prescript-tions for glaucoma medications, for example, before the current 30 day restriction. The no cap fees bill was supposed to go to hearing early in April. Leadership Retreat: The Leadership Retreat will be held at Stoney Creek Inn in Columbia, MO on Friday, May 30 through Saturday, June 1. Visit www.moeyecare.org for more details. ##### WELCOME BACK TO VISTAKON AND BAUSCH & LOMB New ads will appear in the next issue. ### CALENDAR May 30 – June 1 MOA Leadership Retreat Stoney Creek Inn Columbia, MO www.moeyecare/org June 11 Installation Banquet Kemp Auto Museum Invitations to be mailed in May July 9 SLOS Meeting Alcon hosts Aug. 11 Annual Optometry Academe UMSL-College of Optometry 8 hours.
