As well as the party the Student Council {pictured above} had a busy year organising raffles and fundraising and held regular lunchtime meetings. Some

TY NEWS
At the start of the TY year all students are invited to take up the challenge of the Gaisce
Programme, better known as the Presidents award at bronze level. This involves committing
an hour of their own free time each week to community work, developing a personal skill,
physical development and a two day residential which includes walking a distance of 2030kms over two days. We also use the residential as a bonding activity for the year group,
as not everybody decides to take up the challenge. We spent two days in Killary Mr. Costello and myself and this residential is indeed a challenge. The mountainous terrain, although
beautiful, is tough and hard going. I’m proud to say this year we did not hear one single
moan, complaint or see any blisters. That is not to say there was not suffering, but the boys
and girls admirably wore their smiles and gritted their teeth. At the TY Graduation Ceremony on May 21st regional Gaisce Officer Michael Collins presented bronze awards to those
who accepted and achieved their challenge. Modules on offer to TY’s included Toast Masters, provided by Terry Cawley of Toast Masters Ballina. A great opportunity to overcome
stage fright and nerves of speaking in public. Beautician/ Bodhran/Spin classes and Driving
Module. Each year students who scored highly in their SAT scores are invited to sit an
aptitude test for high achievers. Orlagh O’Dowd achieved the top 4% and availed of the
opportunity to attend DCU every Friday for the course of her choice which was psychology.
This course covers a 1st year Undergraduate level module, Orlagh was awarded a Cert after
her final exam and we congratulate her and are proud of her achievement. As a result of
achieving Higher level Business Studies, two students Clodagh Sweeney and Celine Gallagher achieved a certificate of achievement from NUIG which was presented by the Dean of
the University in Galway. Our careers teacher Ms. Murphy prepared students for work
placements at the start of the programme. A huge amount of work goes into this rare opportunity to work shadow for future careers. Firstly we have to educate everyone to accept this
is not an opportunity to find casual work and when we have got over that hurdle we visit
placements such as veteran practices, chemist stores, architectural firms, primary schools.
Teachers visit during the work placement and I am proud to report excellent comments
from employers about the standard of the boys and girls from our school. This is repeated
again in the 2nd term. Career investigation also takes place which aids subject choices and all
students have now made positive decisions for their 5th year study. Our Business teachers
Ms. Kilcullen and Ms. Ryan introduce the enterprise programme and Mini Companies are
set up. Lots of team work, collaboration and hard work is realised by the time the Market
day takes place in December. Then come the real pressure for the County Judges in Sligo.
This year 2 companies achieved awards -Jason Tuffy, Eimear Tuffy and Katie Kilcullen developed a mini company under the name of Inis Oige. They developed a stretch marks
cream and moisturiser from organic products. They achieved 3rd place in the County Final.
Sean Coleman developed his mini company under the name of SPC Calendars. Using his
own photographs he created a fabulous calendar achieving 3rd place in the County finals.
Each Autumn term the science teachers encourage students to research topics which they
enter to the BT Young Scientist. This year Sean Carabine, Orlagh O’Dowd and Eamonn
Kilgannon ’s project was accepted out of over 2000 entries, and only 550 were accepted.
They also entered the project into SciFest where they won the intermediate life sciences.
Junk Kouture: 2 teams entered- Shauna Kilrehill, Clodagh Sweeney, Celine Gallagher and
Katie Kilcullen, Eimear Tuffy, Jason Tuffy. The latter team got through to the regional final.
Each year students go away to the Galteacht for a week. We use Colaiste Acla in recent
years and Mr. Saunders traveled with them. A great experience was had by all. Students
Mini
made a film showing events they participated in such as bog snorkelling, surfing and cliff
jumping! Youth for Justice Projects were carried out during RE Class with Ms Mulcaire and
ComMr Costello. Students organize a Christmas party for St Nicholas Special School and visited
the local Nursing home. As mentioned in the December Newsletter the stage production
