Of the Hearing Dogs teams certified: . 4 of the dogs came from our facility . 6 of the dogs were already owned by the deaf individuals . 50/o of the studentswere female, 60% male . Ages ranged from 25-81years old We had an eclectic group of people being certified this year who held varying occupationg.Some of ' these occupations included: farmer, deaf advocacy group employee, department store clerk and freelance writer. Four of the individuals are *: """:::11 ::i:*: ::::*::: SPOTf,IGHT: tiz Thompson Liz is a freelance writer/columnist,/author.She became totally deaf in 2002 at.50years old and two years later began working from home due to the progression of M.S.Sincethen, she has published a book, Day by Day, chronicling the life of a hard of hearing reporter. In the book she highlights the thing that has influenced her life most: her Hearing Dog and Hearing Dog Director Cathy Naglaich, Student Services Over the past )rear 147 blind and hearing impaired studentswere served.We worked with 137 blind individuals. Of that number, 63 had no previous guide dog experience, while 74 were retrainees.Again in 2010women outnumbered the men with 85 female students and 52 male. Our youngest student was l7 years old and our Jroungestat heart student was 91. Peggy Bell was one of the 137 visually impaired studentswe worked with in 2010.Sheis pictured here with her yellow tab, Reba,who is her fifth Pilot Dog.Peggy first came to us in 1969and -much to our delight-has continued returning each time she is in need of a new guide dog. Peggy is an English teacher at "lf I hadmadea listof all the traitsI hopedmy Pilot Worthington Christian High School.She says that Reba has Dogwouldhave,Reba wouldhavemorethan been a "dream dog" and has fulfilledit."-PeggyBell adjusted wonderfully to life at school. Her affection for the students is obvious, says Peggy,and the feeling seems to be mutual. Peggy shared that on test days she has had to make an exception about letting the kids pet Reba because they have adopted her as their "lucky charm". Ttre average age of our studentsis currently 47 yearsold. Our studentscame to us from 29 afferent states this past year.The largest number came from Ohio (54),followed by lllinois (8),Indiana(7),and Florida(7). Average worktng ltfe for a Pilot Dog team remainsat 8,4 years. In-Home Placements & We completed nine in-home placements this year. They were in Georgia, Virginia, Florida, Canada,SouthCarolina,Ohio andWest Virginia. On most of these triPs, we trY and accomplish more than just the home placement itself.We will visit other students, attend a Irions CIub meeting, drop off information at rehabilitation facilities' or talk to perspective students. Brianna'scommitment to Pilot Dogs didn't end with her Puppy Raising.In November she entered Pilot Dogrs,Inc. into a Farmers Future teaders Development Program competition. This involved her researching our orgtanizationand creating a PourerPoint presentation explaining hovuour program functions.Thanks to Brianna'sefforts, Pilot Dogs was awarded a check in the amount of $830.00. She returned Troy February 2 I st, 20lL and he is off to a promising start in his formal guide dog training. Shewas a well-respectedbreeder hergelf and oumedthe kennel Marls-Tey. Joannawas as passionateaboutthe Dcbermanbreed as she was Pilot Dogs 4nd dedicated her life to assistingboth.Joannawas constantlyfinding wgys to educate otherg about her two passions and wrote severalbooks and arti on the Doberman Pinscher. Joannapassed away on October 13,2010.Shewill be dearly missed and fondly remembered for . all she did for our organization.
