If you are following with the hopes of taking pictures, helping land a balloon or just getting close, please remember that we have access to so much territory because we have shown consideration for it. We urge spectators to not drive on private property without permission. Do not drive in an area that is planted with crops. If you have driven into a crop area, please do not drive into a second one. There are several diseases that are easily transferred from one field to another. The pilots try very hard to land on roads so there should not be contact with the plants. Please be aware of this issue as you are finding a place to take your photo from! Also, please don’t “drive and watch.” Pull over to the side of the road to watch, being sure not to block a driveway. Our goal is for everyone to have a safe, fun experience, while ensuring we have the access needed for future years of the festival. 3 THURS AUGUST 27 Schedule of Events 5:30 am 8 am 5:30 pm SPONSOR & LANDOWNERS BREAKFAST SPONSOR FLIGHT RIBBON BURNING CEREMONY & MASS ASCENSION FRI AUGUST 28 Sponsored by Presque Isle & Caribou Inn & Convention Centers Balloons Launch Presque Isle Inn & Convention Center 5:30 am 4 - 9 pm MASS ASCENSION Balloons Launch STREET FAIR Sponsored by P.I. Rain, poor visibility or high wind speeds can result in cancellation of flights or tethered rides. 3. If the winds prevent launch from the fairground, pilots will select their own launch sites. Want to experience the joy of flying in a hot air balloon? Hot air balloon flights will be available during the festival from certain commercial pilots. The cost is $180/person for morning flights and $200/person for evening ones. A typical flight lasts from 45 minutes to just over an hour. The decision to land is at the discretion of the pilot. Morning flights tend to have a higher success rate and to last longer. Hot air balloon flights are highly weather dependent. If the conditions are rainy, have poor visibility or high wind speeds then the flight is unlikely to go ahead. Contact the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce to learn more or reserve your flight! Saturday evening events sponsored SUN AUGUST 30 by 5:30 am MASS ASCENSION Balloons Launch Want to get closer to the balloons? Crew training will be held August 25 at 6:00 pm at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds for crew members and photographers who want access to the launch field. Crew training is required for all people who will be crewing this year, even if you have crewed in the past. To launch these beautiful balloons takes a lot of work by a number of people. There is still time to volunteer to be a crew member for one of these balloons or help with some of the other activities during this great weekend! We are hoping that volunteers can commit to all 7 flights. It is usually about a 3 hour commitment to launch and retrieve the balloons. Crew members travel in the pilots’ vehicles so your own car is not needed. Please contact Megan Stanley through the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest facebook page, send an email to tfowler@centralaroostookchamber.com or call the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce at 764-6561. TWO CONVENIENT LOCATIONS ...AND WE DELIVER! 260 Main Street l Presque Isle 764-5500 556 Main Street l Caribou 493-3030 6 This year’s Crown of Maine Balloon Fest will once again kick-off with a Street Fair in downtown Presque Isle, thanks to the Presque Isle Lodge of Elks #1954, in cooperation with the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce and Main Street merchants. The Street Fair takes place Thursday, August 27, from 5:00-9:00 p.m. As in previous years, Main Street from Blake Street to Academy Street will be closed to traffic from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. that day. Merchants and other organizations will be joining together for a block party upon the closed section of Main Street. While the details of this year’s fair are still being finalized, past activities have included: live musical entertainment, bouncy houses, a children’s magic show, face painting, the ladder truck from the PIFD, food vendors and both pie and pizza eating contests. Some of these activities will be repeating this year, with new ones added to the mix. Youth Day Offers Family Fun Children and their families are invited to join the fun and activities at the annual Youth Day, once again being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Presque Isle and Cary Medical Center, along with the PI Rotary Club and MMG Insurance. This free event will be held at the Forum on Saturday, August 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be some great new additions this year, according to Sherry Locke, Youth Day coordinator. With Popsicles with the Princesses, kids can have their photo taken with one of the Disney-style princesses and get a popsicle. The Story Walk by Let’s Go! is a literacy and physical activity tool with a series of signs featuring sequential spreads from a children’s picture book. The book featured will be The Hen House by Maine author Carol Dean. As in the past, the day will also include several large inflatable jump houses and carnival games with prizes. All activities are geared for children for ages 3-12, but children of all ages are welcome. Crown of Maine Balloon Fest 2015 Antique Tractor Club Brings Great Additions to the Festival: Tractor Pulls, Train Rides and Agricultural Museum Offered Saturday The Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club is joining this year’s Crown of Maine Balloon Festival, offering some great additions to events at the Northern Maine Fairgounds on Saturday, August 29. “We wanted to be a part of the festival both because it’s a great way to promote the agricultural heritage of the area, which is very important to us, and we wanted to help the festival grow,” said Cheryl Boulier. Thanks to that commitment, as well as the sponsorship of R.H. Foster Energy, there will be a busy afternoon of fun for the entire family that day. Free tractor train rides will be offered around the fairgrounds from 12:00-5:00 p.m. The rides will begin and end near the Commercial Exhibition Building. The Agricultural Museum will also be open from 12:00-4:00 p.m. The museum was created in 2009 through a partnership with the club and the Northern Maine Fair Association. Located on the fairgrounds, the museum showcases various pieces of vintage farm equipment, tools and books. This is a great opportunity to come learn more about the agricultural heritage The afternoon will also see a favorite activity in the area, tractor pulls. None of the tractors for the Antique Tractor Pull are newer than 1960. The pulls will begin at 1:00 p.m. and are expected to last for about four hours. There is no cost to watch the event. For those who may have a tractor that they want to enter into the event, registration is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants must be members of the Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club (memberships are available the day of the pull) and have their insurance paid for 2015. Established in 2008, the Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club is a family-oriented organiza- Tami Kilcollins (above) and Steve Wright (left) pulling at an event earlier this year. tion focused on the preservation of the region’s rural heritage and restoration of the “old” tractors, equipment and related items that were used in the farming industry by the past generations. They want to build an awareness of our agricultural heritage to present and future generations by showing these old tractors and equipment at work. The Northern Maine Antique Tractor Club has grown to over 300 members from Fort Kent to Southern Maine and New Brunswick, Canada. The club offers something of interest to everyone from youth to adults, such as tractor pulling, demonstrations, plow days, tractor trek for charity, trade fairs, and community and family events. Come join in for this free, fun-filled afternoon for the whole family! Young and the young-at-heart enjoy a ride on the tractor train.
