Message
Now that we are dealing with
the middle of winter (except
for those of you in the south),
I hope that your spirits won’t
fade into those mid-winter blues. One thing to remember though is that with the passing of each day,
the time of sunlight during the day increases, slowly
inching its way towards summer. Even though it’s
only a minute or so each day its still a pleasant
thought to know that summer is on the way. You often
hear people saying that the days are getting longer.
Wouldn’t that be nice if that were actually the case.
Just imagine, nice long warm summer days and short,
quick to-the-point winter ones. But, this is not to be.
A day is but a day, 24 hours, no matter when the sun
rises or sets. The same is true with our years, even
though they seem to go by faster and faster there are
still only 365 days in each.
There are natural laws that govern our existence;
they are what give our world its structure and order.
Physics is the science that deals with all of the natural elements, laws and stuff (as I call it) that make-up
the earth, us and for that matter the universe as a
whole. Some physicists can tell us how we are made
up of all these tiny atoms, put together to form elements, then put together again in various combinations to form the stuff of life and so on and so forth.
Other physicists devote their time to the heavens.
They can tell us what the sun, moon, stars are made
of. They know how they travel through the cosmos
following the natural laws of light, speed, movement
and gravity. They can even tell us how the whole ball
of wax got started with the “Big Bang Theory”. It
seems to me that a lot of physicists or maybe scientists in general try to explain away the existence of a
“Superior Being”, as they like to call it. But even with
all of their formulas and theories they cannot explain
away that something or someone had to start the
process. Call it the “Big Bang Theory” if you like, but
still, someone had to light the match.
Anthropology is another one of the sciences that
seems to try an discount the intervention or existence
of a “Superior Being”. Scientists can trace the evolution of “man”, or what they call “man” as far back as
4.5 to 5 million years ago. It’s amazing, but they seem
to know how these pre-humans lived, what they ate
and how they wandered throughout the world. Much
like the “Big Bang Theory” that the physicist deals
with, the anthropologist has to deal with what is
known as the “Missing Link”. That is, the jump from
“pre-historic man” to “homo sapiens” (that’s us).
Evolution seems to be moving along quite nicely then
all of a sudden we appear. I wonder why it is that they
can go back 5 million years through evolutionary history but can’t find the link that ties us to that history?
Maybe, just maybe, something happened, you think?
Questions in their own circles have even arisen as to
the validity of the evolution theory itself.

The first meeting of 2010 is on
Thursday, February 18th. The time
of our monthly meeting has
changed to: 7:00 pm. Dinner, as
usual, is at 6:00 pm.
We will be planning a St.
Patrick’s Day fundraiser. Volunteers
are needed for the 50/50 raffle once
s month on Friday evenings.
These activities allow us to donate generously to many charities.
We need every member to help
make them successful. We hope to
see all of you in 2010.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean Carrier, Secretary
PGK Norm and Peggy VanRiper
proudly let us know of the birth of their
granddaughter Mia. Mia is the daughter of Steve and Mackenzie VanRiper and was greeted
into the family on Dec 5. Norm, now the grandfather of
four, also wants us to know that there are plenty of photos available to all those who inquire.
Member Mike and Bridget Rouhan informed us that
their daughter Erin, an MSU grad, has completed her
internship at Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Rouhan now hangs
her shingle at the U of M Hospital, starting in January
2010.
Brother Knight Jim and Kathie O’Connor want us
all to know how proud they are of son Mike as he just
graduated with honors, from Madonna University. Mike
completed this feat in just FOUR years. Let’s see: Mike
attended St Robert grade school, Divine Child High
School and now Madonna University: yep, Catholic education is a good investment.
Ever wonder whatever happened to Wrong Way Corrigan? Well, we think we found him driving the bus that
took 30 of us to the UD vs UM basketball game on Dec.
13. That aside, Brother Knight Dave Diponio outdid
himself in providing a real fun outing. Bus, game ticket,
refreshments, pizza and salad, all for only $22. It can’t
get any better than that! Word has it that another trip
may be in the works. Keep an eye on your email.
Gotta’ let you in on something. In December, a
Brother Knight was kind enough to hold a “Gold Buy”
at our Council. Sure he made some money but better yet,
our members were paid a fair and honest price for their
old gold. A lot of us emptied old jewelry boxes and rid
ourselves of gold and silver we haven’t worn in years.
And, we didn’t hear any complaints of the prices paid.
So, we are thinking of doing this again later this year.
We can use this as a great Council fundraiser: The Council gets an agreed upon fee from the BUYERS stake, not
the sellers gain. It is a win-win proposition for Monaghan members. So start thinking of pocketing some
easy money.

Some young kids showed a great deal of tenacity at our
recent Christmas party. Spurred on by the need to help
others, these girls signed on to help their school raise
funds for the needy. The girls spent much of the time
collecting recyclable articles to add to the pile they had
previously been busy collecting for a school program at
St Mike’s of Livonia. The recycled objects are then

Thanks for the Memories
February 1971
Let’s take a stroll down “Memory Lane” and visit
the “Old Clubhouse” on Lesure and Grand River
and see what our Knights and their families were
doing that winter, 39 years ago.
Our District Deputy was P.G.K. James J.
Spring (1968-70). Our officers were James R.
Wearn, Grand Knight; Harold F. Meyer, Deputy
Grand Knight; Orville W. Rexer, Chancellor;
Raymond W. Papke, President-Building Association. The Monaghan News Editor was Harold F.
Meyers.
On Saturday evening February 13th we celebrated St. Valentine’s Day with our traditional
dance. The party was co-sponsored by our Bowling
League President Joe A. Chevrier and Golf
League Chairman Edwin E. Knoph. The
“Chavelles” all girl band returned to play after
playing for our Halloween Dance. The cost was
$2.50 per person with light refreshments.
Earl A. McIntyre, Euchre Chairman and his
gang of players went over to Chatham Council by
D.S.R bus to retrieve the famous Euchre Trophy on
Sunday, February 21st. Brother Ray W. Papke was
the bus driver. If those players could only join our
Monday night Euchre players who average about
14 to 17 tables per evening; they would be in their
glory.
After nineteen years of faithful service our favorite secretary Winnie Broderick retired. Her retirement party took place on Wednesday, March
3rd. She wrote the article “Around The Council”.
Jane Asletyne became our new office secretary.
D.G.K. Harold F. Meyer was chairman of the party.
Day of Recollection for our members and their
wives took place on Sunday, February 28th from
4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the St. Paul of the Cross
Retreat House. It was limited to 48 couples. The
Annual Council Retreat took place on April 2nd,
3rd and 4th. It was Palm Sunday weekend and was
conducted by the Passionist Fathers of Holy Cross
Providence. Retreat Captain was Fred J. Krott,
serving on his committee were Financial Secretary,
John A. V. Cooley, Henry M. Hughes, Ed F.
Joslin, Pat McCaffrey, James J. Molloy and
Trustee, Tom C. O’Rourke.
Some of the programs that we had at that time
were Sunday noon boxing classes; Stan Delabbio
was the coach, Sunday night dancing from 8:30 to
11:30 p.m., the retirees met on Thursdays from 1 to
4 p.m., Leo J. Tighe; Chairman, Duplicate Bridge
on Thursday’s at 7:45 p.m., Burt J. Kuhlman;
Chairman, Friday Night Fish Frys along with the
Contact Club and every Saturday night was dinner
from 5 to 9 p.m.
John J. Brick who was Intra-Fraternal Chairman was our February Knight of the Month. John
joined Monaghan in October 1961.
That’s the way it was back in February 1971.
Hope you enjoyed!

GRAND KNIGHT (continued from page one)
Medical science maybe the most important of
the sciences because of the way that it affects us.
Other sciences can try to explain our creation and
development over the centuries but medical science affects us now, in real time. All it takes is to
look around, we all know of friends or relatives
who have benefitted from the research into cancer, heart disease and even the common cold.
There are things though that sometimes, to me,
can be a little troubling and that is the way some
scientists are trying to play around with the structure of life itself. The restructuring of our genes in
a quest to develop the perfect human, cloning and
other like experiments are not trying to discount
a “Superior Being” but more like trying to act like
a “Superior Being”. But, just like the other sciences there is one thing that eludes them though,
is the creation of life itself. To alter life is one
thing but to create life is a whole different matter.
No matter how they try and alter our lives they
cannot create it and what is sad is how easily the
destruction of it is carried out for the sake of science. We all know the story of “The Holy Innocents”, those children murdered in Herod’s pursuit
of Jesus, well; maybe we have to deal with our
own “Holy Innocents” these days, but this time at
the hands and knives of scientists and abortionists. Our faith tells us that God created life and
through the research of science, at least to me, it
seems to point that way. So maybe with our hope
and our prayers and the power of our votes we can
work to see that soon the destruction of it will
come to an end.
Vivat Jesus
Around the Council (continued from page 2)
turned into cash as a class project. The families
of Lexi Morris (daughter of Brother Knight Ed
Morris), Brianne Rogers (daughter of Brother
Knight Kevin Rogers), Megan Aregenta and
Abbigale Laurentius should all be proud of
these young ladies.
Speaking of the Children’s Christmas Party,
the Council owes a great debt of gratitude to
Dorothy Kenney who stepped forward when
others would not. Dorothy didn’t hesitate to take
over the party when she found out that NO
MEMBER would take the time to organize the
yearly party. It didn’t seem proper at the time
that of our 1,000 or so members, not a single
man would chair this event. But as the party unfolded, we were sure lucky to have Dorothy
Kenney shoulder that responsibility. Dorothy
and her Santa helpers, Mary DiPonio, Barb and
Bob Percha, Kay and Pat Casey and DGK Jim
Inch prepared the event that hosted well over
150 kids and families..
So many members ask “How can I get involved, I want to help out”. Let’s hope that next
year that is not just giving lip service to the many
ongoing projects we have. If you are interested
in a project that we don’t offer, bring it up, chair
it and we will do it.
Lenten Fish Fry and More
Join your friends for the Fish Frys
every Friday during lent and throughout
the year from 5:00-8:30. Very nice menu.
“A Monaghan Tradition for over 80 years.”
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 17th
and ends on Saturday, April 3rd
Lenten Observances
Lent is the season which runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclusive.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of
total fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are
days of abstinence.
In keeping with the spirit and meaning of the
Lenten fast, Catholics are encouraged to observe
the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday and
until the celebration of the Easter Vigil.
The law of fasting binds persons from the completion of their 18th year to the beginning of their
60th year, i.e., from the day after their 18th birthday to the day after their 59th birthday.
The law of fasting allows only one full meal a
day, but does not prohibit taking some food in the
morning and evening, observing as far as quantity
and quality are concerned, approved local custom.
The order of meals is optional; i.e., the full meal
may be taken in the evening instead of at midday.
Also: 1) The quantity of food taken at the two
lighter meals should not exceed the quantity taken
at the full meal; 2) The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds persons from the
completion of their 14th year, i.e., from the day
after their 14th birthday throughout life.
The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat.
It does not forbid the use of eggs, the products of
milk or condiments made of animal fat. Also permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravy
and sauces.
Ash Wednesday
The season of Lent begins with the ancient practice of marking the baptized with ashes as a public and communal sign of penance. The blessing
and distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday normally takes place during the celebration of Mass.
However, when circumstances require, the blessing and distribution of ashes may take place apart
from Mass, during a celebration of the Word of
God.
This order may also be used when ashes are
brought to the sick. According to circumstances,
the rite may be abbreviated by the minister. Nevertheless, at least one Scripture reading should be
included in the service.
If already blessed ashes are brought to the sick,
the blessing is omitted and the distribution takes
place immediately after the homily. The homily
should conclude by inviting the sick person to prepare himself or herself for the reception of the
ashes.
This rite may be celebrated by a priest or deacon who may be assisted by law ministers in the
distribution of the ashes. The blessing of the
ashes, however, is reserved to a priest or deacon.
A further reminder: please note the penitential rite
and the Gloria are omitted on Ash Wednesday.
