Sr. Kendra Bottoms Honored for SJMC Ministry
As a member of the St.
John Medical Center
Pastoral Team, Sr. Kendra
Bottoms lives out her
mission as a Sister of Notre
Dame daily in the corridors,
patients rooms and lives of
those whose path takes
them to the Westlake
hospital.
“To be a Sister of Notre
Dame is to be centered on
radiating the goodness of
God in whatever we do, and
embracing that goodness in
all who come into our
lives”, says Sr. Kendra.
“I see this as my way
of sharing Christ with
others and truly following
the call of God to me to this
community.”
Sr. Kendra was
honored two weeks ago as
a recipient of a 2011 Thea
Award. The Award honors
African-American Women
‘In the Spirit’ of the noted
Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA.
The celebration took
place
at
downtown
Cleveland’s Intercontinental Hotel. Sr. Kendra
was honored along with Sr.
Rosella Holloman (CSA)
Sisters of Charity of St.
Augustine, and Sr. Juanita
Shealey, Con-gregation of
St. Joseph.
The Award is presented
through the Catholic
Diocese
of
Greater
Cleveland Office of
Ministry to African
American Catholics.
“This award, which has
been named in honor of Sr.
Thea Bowman, who
dedicated her days to
creating harmony and
understanding among all
people, is a significant way
to recognize the AfricanAmerican women in our
Diocese who are continuing
the good work which Sr.
Thea Bowman started,” said
Richard Lennon, Bishop of
Cleveland.
“The ‘Thea’ awards are
presented to women in the
African American Community who have provided
strong and effective
leadership and service.
Award recipients foster
educational oppor-tunities,
demonstrate
strong
personal
faith
and
compassion for others.”
Sr. Thea Bowman was
the granddaughter of a
slave, born in Mississippi
who, at 15, began her
journey to become a
Franciscan minister noted
for bringing the richness of
black
culture
and
spirituality with a message
of community and equality
to the Catholic Church and
the community at large.
Sr. Kendra is the
second Black woman to
enter the Chardon Province
of the Sisters of Notre
Dame. She started high
school at Notre Dame
Academy, commuting from
her Glenville home,
graduated and then taught
French and Biology for
over 30 years. In 2001, her
life changed. “On Sept. 11,
2001, our nation was
shaken by the attack on the
Twin Towers. On Sept. 18,
2001, my life was shaken by
the news that my baby
brother, Charles, had a
galloping form of cancer.
On Sept. 29, 2001, Charles
turned 40 and on Dec. 18,
he died. My world
collapsed,” said Sr. Kendra.
Losing her brother
caused Sr. Kendra to take
time off from teaching.
“This death and other
factors resulted in my
discovering a new call to
serve God in chaplaincy –
serving the sick and dying,”
said Sr. Kendra.
Her path led her to St.
John Medical Center. “My
job as chaplain is to
minister to God’s people in
pain. Better put, I just show
up and wait for the Lord to
speak through and to me,”
said Sr. Kendra. “As I loved
teaching and was excellent
at it, so I love my work as a
chaplain and I believe I do
that well, also.”

Toothache Troubles....
What do you do if you have a
toothache? It is just amazing to me
what we have seen patients do for
their own toothaches in all my years
of dental practice. Let’s start right
from the beginning.
The first thing that you should
do if you have a toothache is call
your dentist and make an
appointment to see them as soon as
possible. I cannot tell you the
number of times patients have
waited, and waited, and waited to see if the toothache will
go away before they call the office. What usually happens
at that point is that the toothache is so bad that they now
have an emergency, usually at a inconvenient time, like
midnight or a Saturday afternoon, when it will be pretty
difficult to find a dental office open. So rule number one is
do not ignore any pain that you have in your mouth. These
are usually warning signs that there is something wrong
and it is only going to get worse, not better.
The second thing you should do if you have a toothache
is take some Tylenol or ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin.
Aspirin and ibuprofen work a little better if the nerve of
the tooth is inflamed, only because these medications also
act as anti-inflammatory agents. There is really is no reason
to have to live with the pain of a toothache with these
excellent pain relievers around. Many people call the office
and we ask them if they have taken anything for their pain
and they say, “No”, and we can’t figure out why. The one
thing you should not do with an aspirin tablet is place it
directly on the tooth or gum. This is an old wives’ tale and
usually what happens is that the acid in the aspirin tablet
will cause a chemical burn on the gum tissue, which will
only complicate the situation and make the pain worse, not
better.
Generally, if you have a toothache and your tooth or
teeth are sensitive to hot and cold stimulation, this very
well can be a tooth problem instead of a gum problem. A
dull, throbbing ache around the neck of the tooth may very
well be a gum problem. Swelling in your mouth can come
from either teeth or gums and usually denotes a very active
infection going on. For any kind of swelling, you need to
contact your dentist immediately.
If you have a broken tooth, you should rinse your mouth
with warm water to clean the area. Use some dental floss

What do you do if you
or your child has bitten your

accident of any kind? Clean
the area with a cloth and
apply cold compresses to
reduce any swelling. If the
bleeding doesn’t stop you
will need to go to a hospital

stitches. If you don’t have

INTERSECTION RELIEF IN BAY: Goods news
for drivers who travel north on Bradley into Bay Village!
The cities of Bay and Westlake will join in renovating the
intersection at Bradley and Naigle Road just north of the
railroad tracks. This troublesome intersection has begged
for help for a long time as drivers frequently get stuck on
the railroad tracks behind northbound travelers looking to
turn left onto Naigle. Grants and loan monies of $1.2 million
from the State Capital Improvement Program will make
this happen, plus engineering costs of about $35,000 to
each city. The intersection will be widened to three lanes
with a stop light.

Avon Lake’s Father John Schneider Ordained
Fr. John Schneider
It was a weekend of joy and thanksgiving
for members of the St. Joseph Catholic Church
Parish of Avon Lake.
John Schneider, the son or Mary and Jim
Schneider from St. Joseph Parish, was
ordained a priest by Bishop Richard Lennon
on Sat., May 21 at the Cathedral of St. John
the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland.
Father John celebrated his First Mass at
St. Joseph on Sun., May 22 at 11 a.m.
“He chose to do this at a regularlyscheduled Sunday Mass so that as many of
you who would like to attend will be able. A
parish reception will follow this Mass,”
reported Fr. Timothy O’Connor, Pastor of St.
Joseph. The day proved to be a huge
celebration as the church was packed with
well-wishers, friends and supporters of the
church family.
Fr. John has been assigned as a parochial
vicar [associate] at Holy Family Parish in
Parma, effective 7 June.
Fr. Charles McMillen
Butkowski
“I want to congratulate his mother and father, Mary
and Jim Schneider, as well as his brothers and sisters. They
have had a lot to do with nurturing and supporting the call
– the vocation – that John has been given by God: to be a
shepherd after the Lord’s own heart, and to act in the person
of Jesus Christ and welcome people to come through the
door that leads to everlasting life,” added Fr. O’Connor.
Fr. Franz Christoph Dool
“We continue to pray for
our other two seminarians
from our parish: Scott
Goodfellow and Lou
Balzer. “
Bishop
Lennon
ordained six new priests, 5
for service to the Diocese of
Cleveland and one for
service to the Archdiocese
of Daegu, South Korea this
year.
Joining Fr. John
Schneider from the west
side is Fr. Charles
McMillen Butkowski of St.
Peter Parish, North
Ridgeville, son of Paul and
Lois Butkowski, and Fr.
Franz Christoph Dool of St.
Christopher Parish, Rocky
River, son of Carl and
Georgene Dool.

The Bay Village Board of Education is accepting applications to its Citizens
Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC is a research arm of the Board of
Education that studies one or two topics per year and makes recommendations
to the board.
Applications are being accepted now through June 3 for several threeyear term positions. Application forms are available at at
www.bayvillageschools.com/CAC or at the Bay Village Board of Education
Office at 377 Dover Center Road in Bay Village. The completed forms should
be returned to Superintendent Clint Keener by Friday, June 3, at 4 p.m.
This year, the CAC studied student fees charged by school districts similar
to the Bay Village City Schools. Past studies and recommendations have
included the topics of transportation, safety, curriculum issues and many other
topics. Topics are selected by the 12-member committee, with school board
requests given consideration. Diversity of opinion, expertise, gender, age and
geographic representation are considered in developing a committee that is
representative of the Bay Village community. Members may not be employees

Join the Mission of
Community West Foundation
to advance the health and well being of our community.
Caring For Our Neighbors
This past year Community West Foundation gave
$3,350,716 to our community, supporting Fairview and
Lutheran Hospitals and charitable organizations
providing direct service to the needy. Here are some
examples of the important ways Community West
Foundation impacts our community.
Faith in Action
St. Paul’s Community Church is ever mindful of those in our
midst who need our help
– the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed,
the elderly and chronically ill.
St. Paul’s Drop In
Center distributed 1,099
bags of food, 1,250 bags
of clothing, 600 bus tickets, 1,166 hygiene kits,
plus 1,442 pair of socks
and 80 pair of boots last
year. Many clients are
mentally ill and homeless,
and encouraged to come to
the center to have their
feet examined by their
parish nurse.
Community
West
Foundation’s funding of
$17,000 will sustain St.
Paul’s outreach efforts
through 2011. St. Paul’s
Community Church is a
true example of Christian
faith in action, serving local needs unconditionally
with compassion.
Help is Here
Community Resource Services is an agency dedicated to
meeting emergency needs of Avon and Avon Lake residents,
but no person is turned away when individuals and families
need short term assistance. Community
Resource Services
provides food, rent,
and utilities assistance, and information and referrals to
other social service
agencies. It also offers free programs,
ranging from Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten to Job
Skills to Reducing
Credit Card Debt.
Community West
Foundation provided
$5,000 in funding for
this very helpful local
resource to ensure
people in economic
stress have a place to
turn to for help.
St. Paul’s Community Church
reaches out to the city’s vulnerable with Christian compassion.
You can support the work of St. Paul Communty Church and Community Resource Services by making a donation

Westlake Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Award
Girl Scout Troop
71047 worked with the City
of Westlake, the Service
Department and Sign Shop
staff at the City of Westlake
Service Department to
create a sign that is now a
permanent fixture at the
Westlake Bradley Road
Nature Park.
The girls began by
brainstorming ideas for a
Bronze Award project.
They contacted the city with
their ideas, and the city
helped the girls develop it
into a meaningful project.
As pre-requisites to
begin their Bronze Award
project, the girls earned
their Wildlife Badge, Pet
Care Badge, Art in 3-D
Badge, Looking Your Best
Badge and the Junior Aide.
The girls took field trips for
some, while other parts
were in classrooms. The
sign depicts animals,
insects, birds and reptiles
that would be seen while
visiting the park. The girls
researched animals and
compiled the data into a
common format to be
placed on the sign.

Runners - mark your calendars for the 11th annual Avon Eagle Run May 28 as Kaiser
Permanente steps in to fill the role of title sponsor.
Taking place at All-Pro Stadium in Avon, the run promises to be Northeast Ohio’s
premier road racing event of the season.
“It is going to be fantastic,” reports Race Director William “Bud” Hagy. “For the first
time ever, the run will end inside Crusher Stadium where runners will take an entire lap
around the field before entering the finish line chutes near home plate.”
“The Eagle Run represents what Kaiser Permanente is all about, encouraging people
to take a more active role in their health,” said Carolyn Hightower, Vice President of
Health Plan Administration and Strategy for the Kaiser Permanente Ohio Region. “Our
dedication to quality care extends beyond the walls of our medical facilities. This run
encompasses everything we stand for; commitment, dedication, and a passion for health.
We hope the entire family gets involved.”
The event is actually four races in all: A 5-Mile Road Race, 3.1 Mile Run & Walk,
and 1 Mile Kid’s Run. The Kid’s Run will be especially great for youngsters as they run
their race inside the exciting professional baseball stadium.
All runners will have a blast watching themselves hit the finish line on a Jumbotron
TV screen.
“This is our 11th year already and it is going to be the best ever,” promises Hagy.
“Last year, we had 750 runners at Avon High. With this new venue and the race start near
the new Avon French Creek Y, we are looking for upwards of 1500 participants.”
“The Crushers are proud to host the 11th Annual Eagle Run at All Pro Freight Stadium.
We are a community based organization and this event fits perfectly with what do in the
region. We hope to help make this year’s run the most successful yet!” said Derek Stapinski,
Crushers Director of Group Sales.
Proceeds benefit the Avon Schools Educational Endowment Fund and other local
charities like Community Resource Services CRS Avon/Avon Lake.
The chip-timed run will be first class in every way. Hermes Road Racing Systems
will manage the race course and runs. Top quality tech t-shirts and caps will be given to
the first 750 entrants.
There will be cash prizes of $300, $100 and $50 to the top three male and female
finishers. Awards will be given three deep in 12 age groups for males and females.
Fun for kids will include the All-Pro Stadium play area and visits with the team mascot,
Stomper. There will also be food, music and more compliments of the sponsors and hosts.
In 20 years as Race Director for Celebrate Westlake’s North Coast Challenge, Hagy
raised $1.7 million for local charities. “Our goal is to raise $50,000 for this event with
half going the schools and the other half to charities like CRS,” said Hagy. “We invite all
levels of sponsorship to this great opportunity for community involvement.”

Chicks Against Hunger Hosts Food Drive
The Altar of Freedom
by David Scullin
Memorial Day is a time to remember all who gave their lives for
our nation and our freedom.
President Lincoln wrote the following to Lydia Bixby who lost
five sons in the civil war.
“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine
which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss
so overwhelming...but I cannot refrain from tendering you
the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the
Republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly
Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement,
and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved
and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours
to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar
of freedom.”
Chicks Against Hunger
and local Jazzercise locations
teamed to host a food drive to
benefit Second Harvest of
North Central Ohio last
weekend at the Jazzercise
Center at 1502 Lear Industrial
Parkway in Avon (right across
from Petitti’s) and other west
shore locations.
For $5 and a nonperishable food donation,
participants enjoyed Jazz-
ercise and helped a great
cause.
Kim Krall (center)
reported the day was a huge
success as she worked the
Avon drop-off with a team of
volunteers. “Our total food
