Besthorpe Nature Reserve is one of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s largest nature reserves and provides ideal habitat for a wide range of birds, wild plants and other wildlife such as great crested newts. From the A1133 Newark to Gainsborough road, take the most southern of the two turns into Besthorpe Village and follow Trent Lane to its end where you can park and enter the reserve. B5 Upton Hall is a magnificent Grade II* listed Georgian Mansion containing a fascinating collection of clocks and watches. Group visits / tours available by prior appointment. Special open days 28th March, 11th-13th June and 31st October 2010. The meadows provide a good habitat for butterflies and birds. Care should be taken to avoid trampling the wildflowers if visiting during May and June. Interpretation panels explain the park’s rich history, including the Queen’s Sconce (the finest surviving example of a Civil War earthwork in the country) and a new bridge allows visitors to view the surrounding countryside from the top of the Sconce. The park also contains a range of wildlife habitats, including the riverside Devon Pastures Local Nature Reserve.
