We welcome the players, directors and supporters to our newly named W+S Stadium and extend our hospitality to all. Enjoy your day on the south coast in what is set to be glorious weather. we'd hoped but like many things we have relied on a great deal of goodwill with this project and many of you will know that a good website comes at a high cost. We are there now and I'd like to thank Paul Barlow for the effort he has put in to ensure we have a website to be proud of. So, here it is! The first game in the 2016/17 campaign and following a fantastic pre season I cannot wait to see the boys in action again today. I'd firstly like to acknowledge all the hard work by Matty and the coaching staff, the new brand of football is very evident and an absolute pleasure to watch. The players have worked particularly hard too and the level of motivation is high, this has been demonstrated in every pre season game, a real determination to entertain and of course the desire to win. So now down to business, 3 points to play for today and Bishops Cleeve will come here and try to spoil the party naturally. We cannot afford to underestimate any opposition so we know we will have to play at the top of our game today. The lads are ready, let's get behind them on the terraces, make some noise for the boys! Director wise I won't lie, it's a struggle. Again with clubs at our level the board consists of people who have full time jobs as well as the director responsibilities at the club. We've had a couple of directors resign because they simply couldn't afford the time to the club. I want to reiterate again that WTFC is a business and running a business takes a lot of time and hard work which many don't see. Some people think a Director should be measured on match day attendance but whilst I agree it is important to have director presence, it is what's going on at a business level which ensures 11 men go out on the pitch on a match day and it's important the team know they are backed by a healthy and sustainable business. Many people including directors are involved 7 days a week not just on match day and I'd like people to understand this. Behind the scenes we continue to promote the club in every possible way and have secured some nice sponsorship deals but there's room for more. The economic climate I don't need to tell you is difficult so companies are being careful with spend but there is a huge willingness to help and a definite curiosity about the season ahead so on that basis we should see some new faces this season. Our website is now up and running. It's taken longer than Back to the matter in hand. Let's get out there and start the season as we mean to go on. My prediction is for a successful season. I think we will achieve well in the league and make good progress in the cup competitions. One thing I know we will do is entertain, bring it on! Up the magpies! Paula From the Dugout G ood afternoon everyone and welcome to our season opener at the W&S Stadium, I would like to welcome the players, staff and officials from Bishops Cleeve to Wimborne. With 6 games played over pre season the work load on the players has been a lot and it’s a credit to them as well as all the staff involved on how we have coped. Performances have been pleasing and the players certainly look focused for the new season ahead. In my very short managerial career the toughest job so far is to choose a starting line up for today’s game, with so many of the players all in form over pre season it will be a difficult decision to make as a manager. We have managed to stay relatively injury free which is always a concern over pre season with so many games and training sessions, Dan Cann is looking towards the end of August to be back in with us, Jamie I am hoping will be fit for today’s game. The league this season looks very competitive, every game will be hard fought and there are some cracking fixtures for the players to look forward to, August will also see us play 7 games in 25 days, a tall order for a squad of our size, over this period the whole squad will need to be utilized and with the players in form I have no major concerns over this. I am pleased to start with a home game but we then have 2 away games before returning here again to play Taunton. Looking at the fixtures I feel we have a tough start to our league campaign, but I have a lot of belief in these players who have already shown me that they have the desire and ability to compete. I hope you all enjoy the game today Matty Holmes The photo of Matty on today’s front cover was taken by Steve Harris Pre-Season Results - all in July Tues 12th Sat 16th Tues 19th Weds 20th Sat 23rd Sun 24th Tues 26th Sat 30th Sat 30th Ringwood Town Wimborne Town Verwood Town WTFC Dev Squad Wimborne Town WTFC Ability Counts Wimborne Town WTFC Dev Squad Wimborne Town 1 - 2 Wimborne Town 2 - 1 Merthyr Town 1 - 2 Wimborne Town 0 - 2 Brockenhurst 5 - 0 Christchurch 3 - 3 Dexter Sports AC 2 - 2 Dorchester Town 1 - 1 Allendale 2 - 3 Gosport Borough Wimborne Town Football Club Ltd is a private company limited by shares and registered at Companies House with registered number 03640938. Wimborne Town 2 Dorchester Town 2 - 26 July 2016 - Graham Dunn reports In an entertaining, and, at times, competitive pre-season friendly, Wimborne twice came from a goal behind to draw 2-2 with their fellow Dorset Magpies. The game started at a high tempo, with both sides keeping possession well and probing for an opening. It was the home side who had the first attempt on goal when O'Sullivan played in Luke Holmes, but his well-hit shot went just over. At the other end the visitors took a quick free-kick but a weak shot was comfortably saved by O'Flaherty. On 14 minutes Wimborne thought they had opened the scoring. Clever play set-up Hester on the left, and his cross was steered into the net by Toby Holmes, but the lineo flagged for off-side. Jamie Davidson played Toby Holmes through, but an alert defender cleared. At the other end a fierce low cross-shot was well-saved by O'Flaherty. The opening goal came after 23 minutes. A couple of defensive mistakes by Wimborne were punished by the alert Mateus who coolly finished. The game flowed from end-to-end as Wimborne sought an equaliser. Jamie Davidson's through ball nearly put Leonard in on goal, shortly before Wimborne's best effort of the game so far. Stokoe and Toby Holmes fought hard for possession inside the Dorchester half, Holmes came away with the ball and under great pressure fashioned a half-chance, but his shot hit the post and rolled away to safety. But only a minute later, Wimborne scored the equaliser they deserved. Hester's inch-perfect free-kick was met with a soaring header by Stokoe which gave 'keeper Murphy little chance. Two minutes later Dorchester's Oldring and Smeeton clashed heads in going for the same ball, and after extensive treatment both left the field with cuts. Almost immediately after the re-start, Dorchester caught Wimborne napping, and the dangerous Sayers toe-poked the ball home. Then Wimborne suffered an injury blow when Jamie Davidson rolled his ankle. Luke Holmes' passes set-up opportunities for Toby Holmes and Leonard, but the visitors held on to their lead. The good football continued in the second half. Good combinations down the right ended with Luke Holmes cross being headed goalwards by Toby Holmes. Wimborne's defence managed to scramble the ball away from a fluent Dorchester attack down the left. Toby then set-up Stokoe for a well-hit shot. Josh Hartley came on as sub, and with almost his first pass played Leonard in for a shot. Hartley himself then struck a volley just wide. Then on 75 minutes came the goal of the game. Maybury strode forward from central defence, eluded the tackles of the Dorchester mid-field before unleashing a belter of a shot inside Murphy's right-hand post. Shortly after, Stokoe lost possession deep in his own half but was saved firstly by keeper O'Flaherty and then Sam Davidson. The good football continued until the end, although there were some surprisingly tough challenges for a "friendly". The game finished 2-2, and both teams came away with great credit. Man of the Match - Billy Maybury. From the Dressing Room H i, and welcome to our first league game of the new season. And after a good pre-season under the new management team, the boys are absolutely buzzing and can't wait to get started. But first I want to talk about our final 2 pre-season games against Dorchester, on the Tuesday night, when we twice came from behind to draw 2-2, and then last Saturday against Gosport Borough, when we lost 3-2 after being ahead 2-0 on the half hour. The boss wanted to rest players during the pre-season games, so it was my turn to sit out the game against Dorchester, who play in the Southern Premier Division. That meant I got to watch the game, although it was from a crowded dug-out, and the way the boys play is certainly easy on the eye, compared to last season. We're encouraged to play, and I'm sure you supporters can see that. We went 1-0 down, in my opinion against the run of play. Toby put the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for off-side. and then Stokes and Toby won the ball in mid-field, and Toby created a terrific chance for himself out of nothing, and was unlucky to only hit the post. But we didn't have to wait too long before Stokes scored with a great header from Paddy's superb free-kick to equalise. We conceded a second before Billy equalised with a great individual goal. It seems that we're creating and scoring really good goals, but giving away quite soft ones. But with the way we play now, there are bound to be some mistakes, and sometimes you get punished from them. If we do lose the ball in defensive positions we've got to work together to get it back and prevent scoring opportunities. The Gosport game last Saturday was another tough test for us, as they play in the league that Poole were promoted to. We had quite a different backline with Stefan on the right, and Declan partnering me in the middle. Both lads did really well, and will have given the boss lots to think about as he decided on his starting line-up for today. You can always rely on Dec. We started well, and built from the back. We've got ability all over the park, and dictated the game in the first half. Billy's penalty, made by a cracking cross-field pass from one of our defenders (I'm too modest to mention who that was), and Luke's super strike gave us a 2-0 lead. We’ve scored a few from distance in these games, it’s about time I got another. Again we conceded a rather soft goal to go in 2-1 ahead. We knew they'd come at us in the second half, and that's what happened. After they'd equalised we got a bit ragged, and shipped a third. But the boys showed great character and finished strongly. Overall we're pleased with our pre season. Personally, even at 31, I'm like a coiled spring waiting for the season proper to start. Bring it on! Scott Arnold Wimborne Town 2 Gosport Borough 3 - 30 July 2016 - Graham Dunn reports Although Wimborne's final pre-season game resulted in a first defeat, their impressive performance against Vanarama National South opponents deserved at least a draw. Manager Matty Holmes changed the starting line-up to rest some players and give others the opportunity to impress. Pat O'Flaherty was in goal; the back-line was Stefan Penny, Scott Arnold, Declan Randall and Paddy Hester; the midfield was Dan O'Sullivan, Louis Kellaway, James Stokoe, Luke Holmes and Sam Bayston; with Billy Maybury up front. It was the home side who quickly settled into their passing game, and created the first chance. Penny and Kellaway, who covered every blade of grass on the pitch, combined down the right to set up Maybury for a cross. Then Holmes' cross was met by Bayston, but his volley was too high. It was 10 minutes before Gosport had a sight of the Wimborne goal as exWinchester City's Warren Bentley's cross was cleared. On 14 minutes the Magpies went ahead. An inch-perfect cross-field ball from skipper Arnold found Bayston, and his jinking run was stopped by a foul inside the box. Maybury coolly finished from the spot. Wimborne continued to play the better football. They built from the back, playing intelligently through mid-field, and caused their higher league opponents lots of problems. Although Gosport had threatened O'Flaherty's goal a couple of times, it was no surprise when Wimborne deservedly extended their lead on the half-hour. Holmes picked up the ball in the inside-left channel, and picked his spot form 25 yards with a majestic strike. The visiting 'keeper, Martin Rice, had to be substituted shortly after, and with no 'keeper on the bench, Chris Flood took his place. Disappointingly, Wimborne only tested him on a couple of occasions during the rest of the game. Having been almost coasting, Wimborne gave away a soft goal after 40 minutes. From wide on the left, Wilde was allowed to play the ball into the middle for Dawson to deceive O'Flaherty with a mis-hit shot. The goal clearly gave Gosport hope. Five minutes into the second period, and Gosport equalised. Wimborne lost possession on the edge of the box, and the experienced Wright took full advantage. Fifteen minutes later another defensive mistake allowed Bentley an opportunity, and he made no mistake from the left of the goal area. There was a flurry of substitutions on both sides - for Wimborne Taylor Leonard, Ryan Johnson, and Jack Kinge-Phillips came on. There was a danger that having gone behind, the Magpies would capitulate, but they dug deep, and came back strongly. O'Flaherty making an instinctive save to keep the deficit to a single goal. At the other end, Maybury's free kick was well held by the substitute keeper, and Holmes' mazy dribble ended with a shot just over. As much as Wimborne pressed, the Gosport defence held firm, and the game ended with no further score. Dave and Hayley Moore presented a new award this season in memory of their son Steve. We asked them to tell us about the award, and why Scott Arnold was the winner this year. We decided this was an appropriate award as Steve was always dedicated to his club on and off the field. Whether training with the youngsters or playing,he would always play to the max. This year’s winner, Scott Arnold, was a good friend of Steve's and shows the same attributes. Scott showed his loyalty when the club ran into financial diffi- culties and didn't do like many by jumping ship. Scott has a great attitude and was a very good choice to take this award in its first year. The award is open to all not just first teamers, but development and u 18 players as well as any of the other people who contribute and work at the club and am sure there will be many in contention this season. We wish Matty Holmes the very best of luck in his first managerial roll and know he will try and get WTFC to play all the right way. Our photo shows Hayley and Dave with Scott and the trophy. This comes on the back of some very successful trials which took place in May and were attended by over 70 players . The ages ranged from 16-25 , we feel that if a player is over 25 and still playing Reserve team football or Development football then they may well have missed the oppurtunity to play at a higher level so decided to focus on the younger age groups to get them in and then try and develop the players within the football club while they are with us . The aim is to get the players from the Development Squad into the 1st team Squad and then eventually into the 1st team's starting 11 . If the player isn't ready then we have him back in the Development Squad and monitor his progress further . This progression has already worked successfully for Josh Hartley who has signed on for the first team squad from the development squad. The Development Squad is run by Lee Purton who is assisted by Steve Webber. They will be playing in The Wyvern Midweek League with the first game away to AFC Porchester on the 24th August ko 7.45 . The Development Squad's ultimate goal is to provide Matty and the 1st team with players pushing for places not only in the 1st team squad but in the 1st team’s starting 11 on a regular basis. My youth football was played for Limbury Boys Club in Luton and I also trained with the Luton Town juniors. Luton released me at 15 and I signed for AFC Bournemouth as an apprentice. Working through the AFCB ranks, I made my 1st Team debut v Derby in the Simod Cup in 1988 and my first league appearance v Barnsley in April 1989. While at Bournemouth I was loaned to Weymouth and Cardiff City. After 124 league and cup appearances I moved to West Ham in a £100,000 deal, played in the Premiership making 86 league and cup games before a £1.2 m move to Blackburn Rovers, where I appeared in the Champions League and Premiership, making 12 appearances before a £250,000 move to Charlton. A broken leg limited appearances to only 19 league and cup games before retiring from professional football in 2000. I played for Dorchester, making 170 appearances over 4 seasons in the Southern League before retiring in 2004 to pursue a coaching career with my own private soccer school. I joined the AFC Bournemouth Academy in 2006 to run the 7-11 age groups and after 10 years I left to be appointed Manager of Wimborne Town FC. What prompted you to move into management now? Felt it was the time after so long coaching youth players. How are you coping with the media attention? I have some excellent assistants and we share the duties Have there been any surprises, good or not, since you became Manager? None so far… but I’m sure there will be What are your first thoughts of WTFC? I have known the club for a long time, and been to games over the past few years. All positives in most parts so far. You've assembled a great management team. What are their roles? Danny is the assistant manager and coach, Shane is the coach, John Mace assists me in team duties and helps with the keepers, Jason and Matt head the goalkeepers, Jeff is kit as well as many other duties, John is Physio Who are the players who are new to WTFC this season? Toby from Dorchester, Luke has returned for the ? not sure how many times, Jamie has also returned, Dan also had a spell here a while ago, Paddy and Steff from Hamworthy, How has pre-season been? Very pleased with pre-season, the players have worked extremely hard Are there likely to be any additions to the squad? It is a small squad - injuries and suspensions will give opportunities to the development squad players in time… What would be a successful season? Progress in a cup and win games.. Which teams in our division do you think will be the ones to beat? I suppose the obvious ones that people have talked about, if you don’t treat any team with respect then any team will be difficult. Thanks for your time, Matty On behalf of all the Magpies supporters, welcome to the Club. Non-League Paper - July 24 2016 - “Red Peril!” Non-League chiefs have welcomed a crackdown on bad behaviour - and warned clubs to expect a barrage of red and yellow cards if they don’t get their house in order. Two weeks ago, the Premier League, Football League and FA introduced new rules to combat ‘intolerable behaviour’ by players and managers that had reached ‘unacceptable levels’. They have ordered referees throughout the game to take decisive action. Rede cards will now be automatically issued to players who confront match officials, use offensive language, or make objectionable gestures towards them. Managers and coaches will also come under scrutiny when the season kicks off with technical areas to be more rigorously monitored. While the measures have been taken up by the top echelons of the game, Non-League will also be impacted. Evo-Stik NPL chairman Mark Harris said: “Anything to improve conduct, especially involving referees, is to be encouraged, but there is no question this will take a while to bed in. From us it’s a cautious welcome. Clubs will need to ensure players are fully briefed on this. The last thing anyone wants is to see a barrage of red cards brandished. We’re likely to see some fall foul of this, especially early on.” New Evo-Stik Southern League chairman Terry Barratt agreed, adding: “Irt’s an important step and stronger action is something I have been championing for a while. But now clubs have to ensure they carry this message forward we don’t want to see nobody left on the pitch and for it to spoil matches.” Sports Shorts - stories we’ve liked over the past few months Football - Mark Clemmit - writing in “The Times - The Game” 25 April 2016 The plight of Callum Camps, the Roch- Back in 2011, Kieran Djilali, a Crystal dale midfielder, who during his team’s Palace winger on loan at Chesterfield, found himslf a ticket short for his family 1-1 draw with Gillingham last week heard his own car registration being who were travelling up to see him play away to Lincoln City. The Robins, who had suffered financial problems, were reborn as Bideford AFC 1987 but their future was under threat again after a winding-up petition was brought against them by HM Revenue & Customs. The petition, lodged on June 23 over unpaid tax, has now ben cleared after the club settled the outstanding amount last week. It means Bideford have avoided a scheduled High Court appearance and can now look ahead to the new season with aspirations of returning to the Southern Premier at the first time of asking. Director Ian Knight said that the debt carried over from a similar petition last summer. “We were told we hadn’t paid everything the tax man thought we should pay from last year. We thought we had, but HMRC did some more digging and said they wanted more money from us. The club has now paid off all its debt to HMRC. In 1987 the club went under and we formed under the new banner. It is the first time since then that this club has been debt-free.” Wimborne Town - Fixtures 2016-17 Evo-Stik League Southern Div One South & West, and Cup games Sat Tues Sat Tues Sat Sat Mon Sat Sat Sat Sat Tues Sat W/c Sat Sat Sat Tues Sat Sat Sat Sat Tues Sat Tues Sat Sat Sat Mon Mon Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Sat Mon Sat Aug 6 Aug 9 Aug 13 Aug 16 Aug 20 Aug 27 Aug 29 Sep 3 Sep 10 Sep 17 Sep 24 Sep 27 Oct 1 Oct 3 Oct 8 Oct 15 Oct 22 Oct 25 Oct 29 Nov 5 Nov 12 Nov 19 Nov 22 Nov 26 Nov 29 Dec 3 Dec 10 Dec 17 Dec 26 Jan 2 Jan 7 Jan 14 Jan 21 Jan 28 Feb 4 Feb 11 Feb 18 Feb 25 Mar 4 Mar 11 Mar 18 Mar 25 Apr 1 Apr 8 Apr 15 Apr 17 Apr 22 Bishops Cleeve Paulton Rovers Evesham United Taunton Town Bridport / Alresford T Yate Town Winchester City H A A H H A H Slimbridge A Swindon Supermarine H Mangotsfield United H AFC Totton A Bridgwater Town A Weymourh A AFC Totton H Hereford H Wantage Town A Bideford H North Leigh Shortwood United Evesham United Taunton Town Bishops Cleeve Paulton Rovers Tiverton Town Larkhall Athletic Barnstaple Town Winchester City Salisbury Swindon Supermarine Didcot Town Barnstaple Town Mangotsfield United AFC Totton Hereford Bridgwater Town Bideford Wantage Town North Leigh Shortwood United Tiverton Town Larkhall Athletic Didcot Town Yate Town Salisbury Slimbridge H A H A A H A H H A H A H A A H A H A H A H H A A H A H Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Emirates FA Cup Prelim Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Emirates FA Cup 1Q Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League League Cup 1 FA Trophy Prelim Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League FA Trophy 1Q Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Evo-Stik League Today’s Squads Wimborne Town Bishops Cleeve Black & White Striped Shirts Black Shorts & Socks Keeper - Yellow All Sky Blue Keeper: Orange Manager: Asst Mngr: Coach: G/K Coach: Physio: Kit: MATTY HOLMES DANNY HOLMES JOHN MACEY SHANE TRAYNOR JASON HARVELL JOHN EDWARDS JEFF ROBBINS PAT O’FLAHERTY SCOTT ARNOLD (C) SAM DAVIDSON PADDY HESTER RYAN JOHNSON STEFAN PENNY DECLAN RANDALL SAM BAYSTON JOSH HARTLEY LUKE HOLMES LOUIS KELLAWAY BILLY MAYBURY DAN O’SULLIVAN JAMES STOKOE JAMIE DAVIDSON TOBY HOLMES TAYLOR LEONARD GERARD BENFIELD (GK) Manager : Asst Mngr: Coach: Physio: Asst Physio: STEPHEN CLEAL DEREK LIGHTSTONE SEAN BRYAN ALICE BULPITT PAT CLEAL MATEUSZ WIECZOREK OLLIE BUTLER AARON DRAKE JORDAN STODDART TOM HOSKINS NICK RHODES JACK HORRELL BEN HAYES IEUAN CROWE MARK MAGEE SHANE BUMPHREY MATT MAGEE MIKE OLIVER JOSH SWALES JACOB DAVIDGE JACK WATTS MARC WRIGHT (GK) Referee: Iain Parsons (Salisbury) Assistant Referees: Rudi Burton (Eastleigh) Jonathan Dolbear (Eastleigh) Wimborne Town - management team and players’ profiles Matty Holmes Manager Appointed May 2016 Played 124 games for AFC Bournemouth, also West Ham, Blackburn Rovers and Charlton. Wimborne Town F.C. - short history Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the Dorset County FA in 1887. In the 1930’s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset Junior Challenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times. Wimborne’s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, a feat not repeated until 1964. In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division One championship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the Western League. Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in the Club’s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times (1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and the Magpies also lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in 1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97. Wimborne Town also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, they reached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. The dream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, thus becoming the first ever Dorset club to play at Wembley. On a memorable day, under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 win over holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph. 2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wimborne have become established in the league. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first round proper for the first time in the Club's history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of the Conference North ended the excitement. A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager in November. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Browne was appointed as Manager. During this time new Directors came on board, but “due diligence” of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget being slashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a great effort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there is renewed optimism at WTFC. A new Board is in place, Matty Holmes has taken over as Manager, and a strong squad assembled. A brief history of Bishops Cleeve F.C. Founded 1905 County Members Gloucestershire Football Association Southern League History 2006 – present day Hellenic League History 1983 – 2006 In their long history Bishops Cleeve have led a much more nomadic existence than many clubs. The enforced move to Kayte Lane in 1997 came about due to the old ground being sold by the landlord. The club enjoyed a brief period of success in the late 60s – gaining promotion from the Cheltenham League and winning four Championships in their six seasons in the Glos. Northern Senior League. After dropping back to the Cheltenham League, Cleeve gained promotion into the Hellenic League in 1983. They won the Div One Championship and promotion to the Premier Division at the fourth attempt. The five seasons in the Premier Division proved to be a struggle for the Club, although the team won the Premier Cup at the first attempt. The return to Division One proved the catalyst for a period of rebuilding, on and off the pitch. The Club needed to enter into a number of ground share agreements to preserve their League status – Forest Green Rovers, Moreton Town, Wollen Sports and Highworth all allowed us to use their grounds. This difficult period galvanised our club members, and the club was kept running by the efforts of a few stalwarts In 2001 the team won promotion back to the Hellenic Premier Division, and had to enter into another ground share at Evesham United! 2003 & 2004 proved to be a landmark period for the club – returning to ‘The Lane’ after the new Stand and floodlights were approved, achieving FA Charter Standard for Football in the Community, and the completion of the building and facilities. In 2006 the team gained promotion to the Southern League, joining the Midland Division before being moved to the South & West Division a few seasons later. The club has enjoyed mixed fortunes in their Southern League time, generally enjoying mid-table security. In 2011/12 the club finished 11th with their best ever points haul and reached the Gloucestershire Senior Cup final. 2013/14 saw local lad Stephen Cleal take charge with Derek Lightstone, as his assistant, both had a long history with the club and they forged a close link with our Second and Third teams – as well a community tie to Bishops Cleeve Colts Youth section – the future of the club seems much more secure on and off the field of play. After surviving relegation in their first season they put together a competitive team finishing 12th in the league and losing 1-0 to Forest Green Rovers in the County FA Senior Cup. From the Daily Echo Archives Wimborne Town 4 Bishops Cleeve 1 - FA Vase 3rd Round - 10 Dec 2005 DOUBLES from Paul Rideout and Scott Arnold saw Wimborne storm into the last 32 of the FA Vase with a 4-1 battering of Bishops Cleeve. The Magpies' duo turned up the heat against the highly-fancied Hellenic Premier Division outfit, although the visitors had the audacity to take the lead after just 10 minutes. Jubilant Wimborne boss Paul Arnold said: "We have slipped into a pattern of conceding early goals of late, but we turned it around and it was a brilliant performance. "I was very proud of the way they played and now we're looking for a kind draw in the next round." Despite the early setback, the home side hit back midway through the first half with a terrific strike from the manager's son as he timed his run to spring the offside trap and curled home an exquisite finish from 30 yards. Rideout, who had earlier spurned two glorious chances, had the perfect chance to make amends from the penalty spot just before the interval as Mark Kenway was wrestled to the ground. He tucked home from 12 yards with minimal fuss and did the honours again on the hour mark when he rattled home another penalty. This time it was Stuart Cooper's cross for Rideout whose header was handled by a Bishops defender inside the box. With Wimborne well in control, they put a satisfying gloss on the final score 10 minutes from time as Ben Griffiths burst forward to square for Arnold who tapped home his second of the game. Arnold senior said: "It was a great day for the club. There were 287 spectators who created a great atmosphere and the bar was buzzing afterwards." While he would like nothing more than to emulate the famous Wimborne class of '92 who lifted the FA Vase at Wembley, Arnold remains cautious about his side's prospects. He said: "We'd love to go as far as we can in the competition. We know there are some quality sides left in it and the games get harder the further you go. "But we'll be keeping a close eye on the draw today and you never know what might happen." Franklyn has recently signed a professional contract with York City who will play in the National League after being relegated from League Two last season. Who did you play for after leaving Wimborne, and how did you get on there? Afer Wimborne was Dorchester - I got on well there. I hit the ground running with a goal against Weymouth on my debut on Boxing Day - it doesn't get much better really. What led you to York? Did you have trials elsewhere? I signed my first pro deal just over a week ago now, and I couldn't be happier. An agent, who is now my agent, got in touch with me after I was recommended to him. He was doing some work with York at the time and recommended me to the club who said they where happy to have a look at me. I didn't trial anywhere else. I had a couple of offers down south, one was Havant and Waterloovile but York was too good of an opportunity to turn down. Are you still doing your Bournemouth University course? No. I dropped out of university after my first year as I realised what I wanted to do I could without a degree. I wanted to be a coach, and still have ambitions Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, Franklyn. We wish you every success in your professional career, and look forward to following your progress. The photo shows Franklyn playing for York City to do so once I stop playing so I'm going to climb the coaching ladder. What is now your ambition in football? My football ambition now is to work harder than I ever have before and who knows what could happen. Going in to train everyday is the dream and I'm sure doing that I will develop even more. What’s your advice to a youngster hoping for a career in football? My advice for young players is to practise, practise, practise and maintain a good attitude even if your other players don't do things right. Try and keep how you go about your business as professional as you can. Believe in yourself. Most of all work hard and have the right attitude. I want to just say a special thank you to Steve Cuss for giving me the opportunity in the first place. Top man. All the best to everyone at Wimborne for the coming season and future, and thank you to everyone involved with the club. Non-League Paper Programme Column - Steve Coney NON-LEAGUE fans across the country, rejoice! No longer must you spend your Saturday afternoons traipsing around shopping centres - proper football’s back! Of course we’ve had pre-season for the last month but with nothing riding on the results, it’s not quite the same as the real thing. In the National League, we waved goodbye to Cheltenham Town and Grimsby Town and welcomed back Dagenham & Redbridge and York City. Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham have proven in the past two seasons that relegated sides can bounce back at the first attempt but it’s far from easy. Luckily for the Daggers, they have one of the shrewdest managers in the business at this level and you’d be a fool for backing against John Still. The man who masterminded Luton Town’s return to the Football League knows Non-League inside out and it would be no surprise to see the Daggers at the top. York boss Jackie McNamara certainly has an impressive footballing CV - over 250 appearances for Celtic and 33 caps for Scotland - but as we all know, that doesn’t mean much in the National League. Plenty of big names have come… and plenty have failed. Credit must go to McNamara for sticking with the Minstermen and wanting a crack at taking them back into the Football League. And while he may not have known too much about this level of football, he has certainly made some shrewd signings which should stand them in good stead for the long campaign ahead. Forest Green Rovers, defeated in the promotion final at Wembley last season, are the bookies’ favourites and you can see why. With ex-Peterborough and Swindon boss Mark Cooper now at the helm, you would expect them to be a bit tougher than in recent years. They’ve brought in some youth at the back and despite losing the imposing Jon Parkin, signing Matt Tubbs could be a masterstroke. If Cooper can get him back to anywhere near his best, he’ll be in with a shot of the golden boot and will provide a massive boost to Rovers. Much like Forest Green, Eastleigh will be tipped again due to their generous budget and with the hungry Chris Todd in charge, they have a chance. In the South, it’s also extremely even although Ebbsfleet United will once again start the campaign as favourites. Whitehawk, Chelmsford, Maidenhead and Welling will all expecting to compete but there is room for one or two surprise packages to make their mark. At Step 3, the Northern Premier League and Ryman Premier League have another week to wait (sorry!) but the Southern League also kick off today. Full-time outfit Basingstoke, managed by Non-League legend Terry Brown, will be among the favourites but expect the likes of Leamington, Weymouth, Slough, Kettering and Hayes & Yeading to also be strong. Regardless of the team you support, it looks like another cracking season of Non-League action is finally upon us! Summer Soccer Schools Matty Holmes will be running a series of soccer schools at WTFC for boys & girls during the summer holidays. There are specific schools for: 6-12 year olds on Aug 15 & 16: 10am - 3pm (£15 per day or £25 for both days); 13-15 year olds on Aug 10 & 11: 10am - 3pm (£15 per day or £25 for both days); 16-19 year olds on Aug 8 & 17: 10am - 3pm (£15 per day). Each school's programme has been tailored by Matty to deliver coaching and development skills specific to that age group. These represent great opportunities for children & youth to learn from the best in the business. Don't delay, book your spaces today; email Matty on: matty.holmes@wimbornetownfc.co.uk A message from Toby Holmes On the Saturday morning before our first league game of the season (that’s today- Ed), I’m going to shave my head for charity as a very close friend of mine is going through treatment for cancer at the moment, and has lost all his hair. I have a donation page online, and I have also put a donation box behind the bar at the Club. I’m doing it in aid of “Brave the shave”, and my friend’s name is Liam Bartlett. WTFC Supporters Club The Supporters Club was set-up last season with Chris Brown in the Chair. Due to work commitments Chris has had to step down, and Chris Dale has taken over the role. We caught up with Chris D and asked him to introduce himself, and to tell us about the Supporters Club. When did you start supporting the Magpies? My granddad took my brother and me to my first game in 1990. I fell in love with the Club, and have been supporting them ever since. Who's your favourite all-time Wimborne player? Scotty Arnold. He played for us then left for a couple of seasons, but came back. He's a great player and a proper Club Captain. What's the best Wimborne game you've seen? The most memorable was the home Vase semi-final against Bamber Bridge in 1992. I can still see skipper Taffy Richardson sitting on the ball in the corner near the end of the game. Of course I then went to Wembley to see the boys win 5-3 against Guiseley - what a day that was! Tell us about the Supporters Club For me the main purposes of the Supporters Club are to get supporters onside with the Football Club, and to get supporters to know each other better. Which is the best ground to visit? That's a difficult question. For me it comes down to the home team's supporters. We've always had good banter with the fans at Yate. But I'll go for Bridgwater. Like us you'll get a good group of lads behind the goal singing and chanting. There was one game when both sets of supporters had to stand behind the same goal. There was some great banter, and at the end of the game we all shook hands and had a drink together in the clubhouse. We all have one thing in common, and that's a passion for this football club. I've got involved because I want to give something back to the Club. To join, or renew your membership, contact me or Bryan at one of the games. I'll be helping to run the Club Shop this season, and Bryan sells the 50-50 tickets. I'd like to organise some events when we can all get together, and we're hoping to sell supporters training tops. Club members receive a £2 discount on coach travel to away games. And finally, I'd love to hear your ideas on what we can do in the future. Come on you Maggies! Thanks for your time, Chris. And all the best in your new role. Club Shop - new merchandise New club scarves, bennie hats, and baseball caps - special offer price £7.50 This season you’ve been castaway in Poole Harbour.
