originally anticipated – the car is now ready for its first big challenge
at the 2013 Grand National.

The 2013 CLC Judging Seminar will be held Sunday, May 19 at the Larz
Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA. The seminar coincides with
Cadillac Day, an annual gathering of over 100 New England Region
Cadillacs and LaSalles. We are expecting a very large turnout of cars for
judging at the 2013 Grand National. Judging is a rewarding experience,

I would like to thank all the Members
and Officers that I have worked with in
the past two years as Vice President of
our fine Club. As we grow, we must
change and can become something
bigger and better than before. As our
world and car culture changes, it
presents challenges and hurdles to our
organization, if not, our way of life will be
compromised and diminished. As your
President, I will make sure we are at our
peak in the car hobby and the values
that represent it.
As for me, I would like to take time to
let you know who I am. As a young man,
I attended Dedham High School, and
became an All Star in my choice of
sport in my first year. After graduation,

Spring Cadillac Weekend
April 27-28
Members of NERCLC are invited to take part in a Cadillac weekend event
April 27 and 28 in Eastern New York. On Saturday, the annual New
York/New England Inter-Regional Meet will be held at Orange County
Choppers in Newburgh, NY followed on Sunday by the annual Spring
Spectacular show hosted by the Cadillac Club of North Jersey.
The Spring Spectacular is just 50 miles from the Inter-Regional. You
should plan on booking one night in one of the many hotels immediately
adjacent to OCC (Hilton, Hampton, Howard Johnson, Courtyard, to name
a few).

My Restoration Project
On December 14, I was able to finally
pick up my 1966 Eldorado Convertible
from an eleven month project. Not a
total restoration inside and out, but a list
of specific things to be done in a
workshop including a complete strip
down of paint, minor body repairs, and
repaint. I knew I was not qualified to do
this myself. Here is how I went about it.
My background is that I’m a recent
retired mechanical design engineer. So,
I never designed cars, but did a lot of
work in precision measurement
gauging. Perhaps, then, I have a feel for
mechanical assemblies and their fits,
clearances, etc.
I bought my Caddy three years ago in
good shape, the color combination I
liked, and in good running condition.
The paint was not original - correct
original color, but poorly done. Plus,
years of body wear and very minor
surface rust underneath were evident.
So I went out to find the shop that
would give me an excellent job for a
reasonable price in a reasonable
amount of time. My first decision was to
search within a 10 mile radius of my
house so I could, on a weekly basis,
keep track in person, the progress and
answer questions if any. Secondly, I set
my criteria for who would do the job.
Instead of looking in magazines for
advertisers, I went looking for “word of
mouth” recommendations. What I
wanted to hear from people was (a) “he
has does excellent work and is very
fussy” and (b) “he is a very honest
man.” I also wanted a small shop
instead of one with 10 or 15 cars being
worked on by 15 employees. It took a
while, but I found one.
Owner and three employees. Shop
clean and orderly. Mixed his own paints.
Personalities were very open.
References and previous portfolios
were excellent. Six miles away. Very
clean and decent neighborhood. No
crap cars and parts, oil slicked driveway
inside or out. Nothing wrong with that of
course, but this one was clean and
neat. It was mostly a small collision
shop. The owner had 30 years of
experience and followed in his Dad’s
footsteps. I liked the guy within one
minute after meeting him. My 67 years
told me that was important.

Hence I made up a list of what I
wanted, copied myself, and requested a
quote in writing. Took a month and a
half, and I received a very detailed
quote that was 10 percent higher than I
hoped. Expected completion in five and
one half months. He would work on my
car along with his routine repairs and
hence give me a better price. I accepted
with a 1/3 down payment.
The months went by and I began
seeing the craftsmanship of his work
unfold. I visited once per week or two.
He was glad there weren’t any
“surprises.” All sheet metal was good
with only minor repairs. I wanted all
areas underneath and behind panels
painted a sheen black with some
exceptions. Almost all was
disassembled except for body off of the
frame. Such a big convertible could
have twisted. Some discoveries such as
a window motor needed replacement
and head lamp part needed repair were
taken care of as the job progressed.
Six months, seven months, eight
months. Time was passing by, but I
could see what a perfectionist was
doing and decided the extra time was
going to be worth it. The following is a
memo I sent a friend of mine the day

after December 14 when I picked it up.
My friend in Alabama also has a ’66
Eldo. Convertible in a different color.
His car had a complete restoration over
17 years ago.
“The man at the shop is a very fussy
guy and honest. At times, it seemed I
would never get my car back from
January 14, 2012. However, I began to
see the degree of craftsman he was
used to. Anything but perfect was
unacceptable to him and those who
work for him. He had estimated
completion end of June. I made up my
mind that extra patience was going to
pay off. So, I gave him 2012 one month
at a time. As time got closer to
completion beginning of November, his
secretary told me of her upcoming
st
wedding on December 31 at one of
my visits. I told her that if I got my car
before Christmas and weather
permitting, I would pick her (&
bridesmaids) up in my ‘66 for free. She
was the only one in the office to hear
this. Now, I’ll let you imagine what
happened after that! It worked.”
My beautiful car, Strathmore White,
white top, and burgundy interior is home
and I am thrilled with the results.
Assembly, finish, precision fits, four new
tires with original WW pattern, etc. are
awesome! The car never looked this
good leaving Detroit.
I go and look at the car every day.
Was I just lucky or were my instincts a
big help? There is still work to do.
Leather interior, etc., etc. That’s Okay!
It gives me goals to shoot for when the
budget allows later.

Cadillac Past Visits the Lane Motor Museum
During my recent Florida hiatus, I
availed myself of the opportunity to
spend a weekend in Nashville,
Tennessee. At the Visitors Center, I
grabbed a handful of brochures and
poured through them searching for, of
course, anything auto-related.
One listing caught my eye… Lane’s
Motor Museum in Nashville, touted as
being the largest collection of foreign
vehicles in the U.S. I’m admittedly not
too much "into" the foreign marques,
although I did own several in the
late ‘60s; a cute, and rare, 1953 Singer
Roadster, bought for $70, a 1960 Austin
Healey Sprite with a solid fiberglass
nose that tiled at the front for easy
access to the engine, a 1953 Hillman
Minx coupe, and a 1956 Jaguar 150
coupe come to mind.
In 1967, Jeff Lane, then 12, was
fascinated with his Dad's tinkering on
an old MG he owned. When asked what

he'd like for his 12 birthday, Jeff
answered without hesitation” An MG of
my own to restore!" The seed was thus
planted for Jeff's lifelong ambition and
dream – a museum featuring rare and
unusual foreign vehicles. Coincidentally,
1967 was the year I got "bitten by the
old car bug," difference being I was 17;
Jeff was 12.
Well, Jeff succeeded in fully restoring
the 1955 MG TF his Dad gave him for
his birthday. In fact, it's one of the
featured vehicles in the museum! He
kept on collecting rare and unusual
foreign vehicles, and before he knew
it, he had amassed a collection of more
than 150 cars. Now the problem was
where to house them all.
The problem was solved, at least as
far as Jeff was concerned, when he
heard about an abandoned Sunbeam
Bread Factory in Nashville. The derelict
building was in deplorable condition,
having been totally neglected for the

past 10 years. It would be an ambitious,
and expensive, restoration. In its favor,
however, was the fact that it had
132,000 sq. ft. of storage area, the
architecture was pleasing, and the
building’s design afforded copious
amounts of natural light.
When his friends and backers saw the
dilapidated structure, they though he
was "flaky" or "half-baked" to even
consider such a monumental
undertaking. Not one to "loaf" around,
with a "rye" smirk Jeff "rose" to the
occasion. He evidently had enough
"dough" to finance the restoration, so he
gave the green light.
The museum opened in 2003, and,
with its 150 plus vehicles, it’s the largest
such collection not only in the "yeast"
but the entire U.S. The brochure
describes most visitors’ reaction as
soon as they enter the showroom… a
big "WOW!". The brochure was
accurate, as this was my reaction when
I first entered the massive museum with
vehicles everywhere.
I know my American autos pretty well,
but I had never even heard of the name
of many of these curiosities. Some of
the more interesting offerings included
the 1934 McQuay-Norris Streamliner,
complete with period "motor home" in
tow, a massive one-of'-a-kind 1933
Panhard-Levassor 3-window coupe,
a real "odd duck"… the massive 1936
Harris Aerodynamic Steam Car, the
dashed dream of an eccentric inventor
who wanted to revive steam powered
automobiles. It looked more like a
gigantic motor home or bus, and had
huge early 1920s Packard wheels,
complete with the red hexagon on the
hubcaps. Also spotted was a very
unique 1946 Tatra T-87 Saloon with
three headlights on the front. A
precursor to the ill-fated Tucker, the
center headlight turned in whichever
direction you were steering. For those
who enjoy boating, there was a fully
restored 1967 Amphicar, made in
Germany for only a few years, that you
could drive on land or water.
For the "aviation”-minded, there was
also a lineup of some very strange cars
fitted with an actual airplane propeller,
either at the front, or the rear! Two such
vehicles were the 1919 Leyat Helico
and a 1932 Helicron. In a separate
room, there was a huge display of "minicars", including one that holds the
Guinness Book of World records as
being the smallest car in the world.
Finally, there was also a room devoted
to scooters and motorcycles, including a
1946 Whizzer.
I spent several enjoyable hours
perusing this most unique and
interesting collection. If you're ever in
the Nashville area, be sure to check it
out! I rate this as a 5-star attraction.

• Hospitality Room – Rick needs 2
more volunteers to help monitor the
Hospitality Room
• Judges – Based on the number of
cars we are currently expecting, we
could need up to 100 judges. Don’t
miss out on the National CLC Judging
Seminar to be held at Cadillac Day on
May 19 at the Larz Anderson Auto
Museum.
• Security – Members of NERCLC will
provide overnight security, from dusk
until dawn, to ensure the protection of
attendee vehicles. We will need 4
volunteers each night to provide about
two hours of service each.
• Parking Attendants – This is typically
the job that we have the most
volunteers for. Guests from other
Regions also sign-up during event
registration to help. The job requires
assisting car owners with finding their
numbered parking spot on Saturday
morning.
• Runners – On Saturday, Judges need
4 to 6 volunteers to help running the
scoring sheets from the show field to
the Tally Room.
• Judging Tally – 4 volunteers are
needed to work in the Tally Room
ensuring the scoring sheets are
completed and the results are
properly tallied in preparation for the
Awards Banquet.
• Hotel Liaison – Gary needs 2
Jobs, jobs, jobs. Holding an event like a
Grand National inevitably creates
opportunities for dozens of volunteers.
The Planning Committee is coming very
close to a critical time where it needs to
start assigning responsibilities to many
of those who have previously
volunteered to help but who are unable
to attend regular planning meetings
because of the distance some of them
live from our meeting locations or
because of conflicting schedules.
Below is a list of the specific jobs
available:
• Registration – 8 volunteers needed to
assist Chuck and Cheryl and work a
rotating schedule at the Registration
desk Tuesday through Saturday
morning.
• Driving Tour leaders – 2 volunteers
needed to assist George lead groups
of driving tour participants to Plimoth
Plantation on Tuesday. Another 2
volunteers will be needed on Friday to
assist with leading guests to the
location of the Clam Bake.
• Chaperons – 2 to 6 volunteers per
day to assist Dave and Nancy to
conduct head counts and make our
guests feel welcome on the various
bus tours offered Wednesday to
Saturday

Technology in Traffic
DETROIT – Cadillac is packaging safety
technologies to help ease the rigors of
the daily commute from the driveway to
crowded parking structures and
congested freeways.
The new ATS sport sedan is one of
three 2013 Cadillac models with Driver
Assist technology that uses cameras,
radar, ultrasonic sensors and automatic
braking to help make common traffic
situations safer. In certain low-speed
conditions, the car can even brake
automatically to help prevent collisions.
“The mall parking packed with cars
making it difficult to see what’s coming,
or the parking deck at work, or the stop
and go of a freeway commute – these
are hassles that drivers navigate every
day,” said James Bell, General Motors
head of consumer affairs. “Cadillac
Driver Assist can help
make these situations less
treacherous and maybe
more bearable.”

continue my education, and sport with
them, which was mistake number one
in my life. Then I attended Wentworth
Institute for one semester and
transferred out to a smaller school,
with the proper educational program
for me. Before graduating I was asked
to become an Instructor at the school,
my first job offer. I must say, before all
this, I was an apprentice for many

vision such as when backing out of a
parking spot with vehicles on both sides.
Cadillac’s Safety Alert Seat warns the
driver of traffic approaching from the left
or right using directional seat vibration
pulses. This patented warning
approach is tied to all of the on-board
crash avoidance systems.
• Rear Vision Camera with Dynamic
Guidelines allows the driver, when in
reverse, to view objects directly
behind the vehicle via the eight-inch
monitor on the center stack. A set of
red and yellow guidelines appear on
the display to mark the vehicle’s turn
radius, allowing for easier parking and
backing maneuvers.
• Automatic Front and Rear Braking will
apply emergency braking
automatically in certain driveway,
parking lot and heavy traffic
conditions if it detects a vehicle in
front of or behind the car.
• Forward Collision Alert uses the
Safety Alert Seat’s haptic warning to
vibrate both sides of the driver’s seat
when the car approaches a stationary
or moving vehicle ahead too rapidly.
• In addition to the ATS, the Driver
Assist package is available on the allnew XTS luxury sedan and the
revamped SRX luxury crossover.
“Most of us think of driving a luxury car
on open roads, and of course cars like
the new ATS sport sedan are right at
home doing that,” said Bell. “But traffic
and parking situations are way more
common. A great car should help you in
those conditions, too.”

service, and marketing. Late in my
career, I had a chance to work with an
MIT engineer to run his company in St
Martin. Mistake number two in my life.
Along with that, I became the
youngest to receive a Master’s
License in the State of Massachusetts
at 23 years old.
As for me now, I work for the MBTA
where I will retire in the next 5 years,
and I run an small business that has
grown in the past ten years –
something I did
not expect.

Obviously, very obviously, I am now an
old man that has slipped into a form of
dementia. This might be preceded by the
"old car disease", which affects us and
many friends. As writer, Tim Howley,
began one of his columns, "There is no
known cure for the old car disease." I
guess it's true.
Perhaps a sign of increasing dementia
within me is my constant dreaming of
owning another convertible. Yeah, it
doesn't make much sense to be thinking
of that this time of year. But for the last
half-dozen years, once Armistice Day
passes, I start wishing for a convertible
again. It's twenty (20) years last May since
I last owned one. And, not to be morbid,
but I want to own and drive another one
before . . . the unthinkable. No, I don't
mean the Mayan version of Y2K. I figure
that they just ran out of wall.
But, now and then, I realize that I'm up
against something heretofore not
experienced much: the need to redefine
myself, which might precipitate a reordering of my priorities. I mean, that I

Cadillac’s V16 of the 1930s is fairly well
known, as is its 2003 Sixteen (as in V16)
concept car. But what is not generally
known is that Cadillac toyed with the idea
of a 16-cylinder car in the 1960s.
Back in the 1920s, Cadillac was seen as
the top rung of General Motors’ ladder
rather than a serious luxury car, such as
Packard. Cadillac’s surprise launch of the
world’s first production 16-cylinder motor
car in 1930 changed that. The introduction
of a powerful and efficient overhead-valve
V8 after World War II cemented Cadillac’s
position at the top of the American luxury
heap, and it remained on top until imports
started making serious inroads in the ’70s.
In 2003, Cadillac displayed a Sixteen
concept car at auto shows to burnish its
luxury car image. Although enthusiastically
received, the Sixteen wasn’t approved for
production.
In the ’60s, America enjoyed a strong
economy and cheap gas. Cadillac
executives thought the time might be ripe
for another multi-cylinder car. Two engines
were contemplated: an overhead-cam
V12 and a V16 composed of two V8s.
Neither engine got farther than the
prototype stage.
It seems that more work was exerted on
styling proposals. In 1961, a scale model

really do want to "leave something for the
kids"; but on the other hand, I'm
dreadfully afraid that this government will
likely take it all away, anyway… so why
not 'splurge' a bit. Put the new convert into
one of my kid's names and stop
worrying… seems to be rather desirable
or appealing. But I can't just think of
myself: can't be hedonistic.
Now that I'm pretty much retired – and it
was chosen FOR me, though no
complaints (except a shortage in the
Exchequer – don't we all have that – but it
does limit or reduce (to nothing?) the old
car hobby/fun budget), I do wonder a lot
lately: do I dare try to "grasp the gold ring"
and have some fun, or should I wait to see
what six to ten months more are going to
look like? Should I 'abandon the dream'
and concentrate of "being responsible"?
Well, after being married for 40 years,
that's pretty much what I've been used to
doing. Yet the question persists: do I stay
on that same good path, or do I "step out,
be bold", and "go for the gusto"?
I have many more questions than
answers. So, I suppose that this rambling
monologue is "to be
continued"… if you can stand it any
longer! I guess that this writing is what
English professors/teachers used to call
"stream-of-consciousness" style.
One thing did occur to me earlier today: I
miss the fine writers that Old Cars Weekly
used to have, like Bruce Fagan, Tim
Howley, Ed Robinson, James Flammang,
and a few others. Another hobby
publication out of Atlanta – I forget the
exact title – used to have a great writer in
Tom Murray, who wrote
about the 1940s: the cars, the places, the
girls, the music. The man could write like
very few others. He made you feel like
"you were really there".
So, now, after examining an '89 town car
in Quincy – If the interior was only as good
as the outside – I'm still looking around". I
must obey my own dictum: be patient, be
circumspect.

The Daily Drive
with an extremely long hood and
sweeping fastback was completed. In
1963, Cadillac designer Wayne Kady
drew an open speedster proposal with a
plethora of hood air intakes. Another 1963
drawing was of a notchback coupe with
rear fenderlines that would show up on the
1967 Eldorado. Also in 1963, a model with
an extreme vee’d grille and windshield
was photographed.
By 1965, Cadillac was serious enough
about the multi-cylinder project to give it
the project number XP-840 and build a
full-sized mockup for a two-seat V16
fastback coupe. XP-840 continued the
long-hood look and added a few new
features. There was no rear window;
instead, a narrow slit was cut in the roof
for a rear-facing TV camera. Ribbed
“cuffs” spilled out and down the hood to
recall the external exhaust pipes of the
Classic era.
Unfortunately, the project didn’t go
beyond the mockup phase. One wonders
how a Cadillac V16 flagship would have
fared in the prosperous, pre-OPEC
embargo days of the late 1960s.

Driving Tour the weekend of October 5.

Indoor Swap Meet was short several
vendors due to the forecast severe
weather (which turned out to be a nonevent). Nevertheless, the event was

• NERCLC vinyl cling decals will be
printed and made available to members
at a nominal cost. The stickers will be
available before and during the Grand
National.
• Olsen Cadillac – Gary is working on a
possible new relationship with Olsen
Cadillac in Woburn, MA.
• Inter-Regional – This year, along with
the Lower Hudson Valley Region, The
NY Capital District Region is helping
plan the annual NY/NY Inter-regional
Meet. See the advertisement this
newsletter. Following the Saturday
event, the Cadillac Club of New Jersey
is hosting its annual Spring Spectacular
Car Show only 50 miles away. Plan a
weekend of Spring fun and join us at
both events.
• Cadillac Day at Larz Anderson Auto
Museum – The cost will remain $10 per
vehicle. This event will also be host to the
CLC Judging Seminar which will be held
in the museum between 12:30 and 2:00.
The event will include a professional DJ
and a food vendor.
• Additional calendar items being
considered, in addition to those already
listed on Page 2, include: Hanscom Air
Force Base, security protocol has to be
considered, details to be worked out;
Mike is coordinating with the General
Manager of Long Cadillac for the annual

Due to the number of vehicles expected at the 2013 CLC
Grand National, we are requesting a large number of judges!
This is a fun and educational experience. You will have the
opportunity to be partnered with one of CLC’s most
experienced judges and serve on the judging team of your
choice. This provides you the chance to judge the year and
type of car you are most familiar. You will not be permitted to
judge your own vehicle, however, or the class in which your
vehicle is displayed.
All judges will receive a special Judge’s Pin and a free
gourmet breakfast on the morning of the car show. If you
attend the breakfast, you will be required to participate on a
judging team. An instructional video will also be shown at the
breakfast for those unable to attend this seminar.
