HIGHWOOD, Esq Entrance £5 • Children Under 16 Free • Refreshments & Bar • Free Car Park Kindly supported by BTF PARTNERSHIP WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:30 Page 2 CROW PLAIN FARM, COLLIER STREET William Highwood farmed at Hertsfield Farm at Stilebridge Marden. In July 1915, he brought Crow Plain Farm from the White family, who were well known for farming at Beltring, and were responsible for building the Oast Houses there today. My Grandfather Frank returned from France in 1920, where he had been for the last 3 years. He first worked at Hertsfield, and after marrying Molly Oyler in 1922 moved to Collier Street and farmed the 250 acres at Crow Plain Farm. William organised the ploughing match with the Marden, Staplehurst and Collier Street Agricultural Society on 5th November 1915. It is amazing how many Great Grandchildren of Members of that Society are here organising this event today. Frank and Molly had 3 children, Robert who farmed at Manor Farm Marden and Daphne who married Stuart Tipples of Staplehurst. My father, Peter, stayed here at Crow Plain and farmed with Frank. I started farming here in the 70s. Over the years, many things have changed and the sheep, cattle, apples and hops have now all gone. We added Church Farm Orchards and Spitzbrook Farm to the acreage which is now 380 acres We mainly grow Wheat and Oilseed Rape in a share farming agreement with our neighbour William Thompson, and Lettuce is grown on our land by Salad Growers Laurence Betts Ltd. I hope you all have an enjoyable day. 2 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:30 Page 3 CROW PLAIN FARM DURING THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN On the 15th August1940 the Battle of Britain started with the bombing of Croydon Airfield. Late August and the hop pickers were down from London, living in our hopper huts, some of which still remain in the field to the west of here. A German Bomber, returning from West Malling Airfield, having failed to hit its target, made the decision to dump its bombs. One fell in the field between Jarmons Farm and Crow Plain farm buildings, killing a farm worker by the name of Pope as he rode home on his bike. The second bomb fell in this field. We don’t know exactly where, but it exploded and the shock wave blew the thatched roof off Gain Hill Barn next door to this field. The blast could be felt in the hopper huts a few hundred yards away. The pickers were quite understandably frightened by this and some saying, “we’ve had enough of this!” returned to what they thought would be the safety of London. On the 5th September, Hitler and Göring ordered the bombers to attack London and most of those bombs fell on and around the docks in the East End.The next day, hundreds of East Enders turned up on trains. Many in a state of shock, with no luggage and just the clothes they stood in, some were still in their pyjamas. Some doubled up with friends in huts, others lived in farm buildings and tents. There were plenty of people to pick the hops that season! In September of that year, everyone was busy picking hops when a polish Pilot (I can’t find his name) crashed in the field below the huts to the West of here next to the garden they were picking in.The Hurricane he was flying was hardly damaged. Climbing out of the plane, he ran towards the hoppers in order to try and stop them going to the plane as he thought it would catch alight. When they found he couldn’t speak English, they thought he was German and they started to beat the poor chap up, somebody had even found a rope to lynch him with. Fortunately, order was restored when they saw it was an RAF Plane, they cheered and stuffed money and gifts into his pockets. The pilot was collected shortly afterwards in a RAF car. That night and the next day, the plane was guarded by the Home Guard, to stop pilfering. It was a long hot sunny day, and the young lad guarding the plane got bored. He sat in the pilots seat to have a look at the controls. He pushed a little button on the joy stick, and 8 browning machine guns fired directly over the heads of the pickers working in the field! Fortunately, no one was hurt. The plane was collected the next day. All the fields here were wired up as a dummy airfield. There were some huts and a generator near Hornslodge, and lamps were laid out in the fields to fool the bombers into thinking they were over an aerodrome. As far as I know it was never used, but we have been ploughing up the cable left behind for years Stuart Highwood PRESIDENT OF WKPMA 3 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:30 Page 4 NEW WEBSITE TO BUY AND SELL k .u o .c y r e in h c a m m r a www.f ™ ™ www.farmmachinery.co.uk www.farmmachinery.co.uk Est 1982 TH E RE FAVO GION’S FARM URIT E ING TITLE Cou ncil turns bac ® Serv ing fa BER KSH rmer IRE s an KEN | BUC d gr ower s in k on June Lives T | OX KINGH farm its Potato 2013 tock AM far m FOR on an at Quex harvesting are DSH SHIRE East wit Park bein Susse IRE | ho x gove u t w a g stran | SUR ESSEX ter ded r | HA REY road n ment -bac af te ploug | SUS MPSHI ked r a fields hed lin SEX RE throu . gh theirk “This cepta is comp gent, ble,” said letely unac whos off from e sheepChri s Sar-their when were wate coun East Suss r suppcut cil a stret start ed ex coun ly Hast ch of the on diggi ty ings ng Bexh farml link ill and whic road acrosto Even t houg h he rents s cou nci l h . that told t he coun the Mr ty moda so calle Sa r gent d acco wate tion work r befor wou ld s to provi me excav be i de link ation n place road s for began happ ened. the , this meet ings “We have has not over with had six mont the coun six Sarge hs,” cil of g nt, who has said Mr r 240 hill a ss ju st acres wher e he abov e sheep Bexkeeps coun and some cil signe cattlemain ly moda . “The d new tion work the accom Farm wate s to ers are troug r provi ical hs for pipes and de urgin parti by t es happ g new he roadthe land en to to come the coun has . Problems were shared and resolved in the same way as brothers would manage the ups and downs of daily life and this created a bond that only time can fabricate. John joined Haynes Brothers in 1961 when the agricultural department operated from our Ashford Road site before moving to Parkwood in 1966. He served a five year apprenticeship attending Oakwood Park College qualifying as a very competent Agricultural Mechanic. Never one to let the grass grow under his feet, John soon began to look towards building his career and, when an opportunity arose in 1975 to join his two uncles in the demonstration team, he knew what he wanted to do. Alan and Frank Winch welcomed John into their ranks and they represented an important team, specialising in installing and demonstrating new equipment, and promoting Haynes. The following years saw John develop a Field Advisory Service, a very important addition to the agricultural team, especially in the rapidly changing farming world where technology was in constant flux. This role exposed John to many new products and a daily challenge to keep pace but this is where John’s personality shone through, his unique ability to turn a disaster into a success, a loss to a gain. Trust is not given but is earned and our customers soon realised what an asset John was with his calm approach to a dilemma and sound advice. Many changes in farming practices brought very real issues and John was expected to keep up with the latest techniques whilst not letting go of the past values, a tough remit indeed. Demonstrating and installing machinery soon showed that John had other skills not yet exploited and one of his favourite tasks was ploughing. As Show Coordinator, John attended all of the local ploughing matches and was soon contesting, specialising in the four furrow reversible class with his treasured Dowdswell plough where he went on to win several trophies before moving on to judging, a side which he enjoyed immensely. It is in this role that many farmers will remember John, always laughing, always ready to advise, part of the farming community. Even in retirement after 52 years with Haynes, John was always there when needed. 2015 saw the passing of a very dear friend and colleague and there cannot be a farmer in Kent who will not miss his witty comments, solid and sound advice and straight from the shoulder delivery when required. John had a passion for farming and will be sadly missed by so many of us. Plough on, John Jeremy Cloude WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:30 Page 17 Back by popular demand! Agricultural tractors, agricultural engines, agricultural material handlers and light agricultural vehicles (as defined in HMRC Notice 75) can now also use rebated fuel in the following circumstances: • • When travelling to, from or participating in events which: o are inherently linked to an agricultural, horticultural or forestry operation, or o educate and develop skills within the agricultural, horticultural and forestry industries, or o promote agriculture, horticulture and forestry within the industry or to the general public. Neither the travel nor the participation must be for the commercial gain of the owner of the vehicle. HMRC has stated that it does not expect travel (one way) to exceed 15 miles and the use of machinery must be in accordance with the appropriate DVLA vehicle and driver licensing guidelines. Examples of the types of activities allowed under these rules include: • Travel to/from a local agricultural show by a farmer using machinery such as a tractor or telehandler to help set up/dismantle the showground • Travel to/from a local agricultural show by an agricultural processing vehicle being used in a demonstration at the show • Travel to/from and participation in a local ploughing contest by an agricultural tractor. Regular commercial markets, car boot sales, music festivals are examples of activities that do not qualify under these rules. Full guidance on the use of rebated fuel can be found in NFU Business Guide 101, available to download from www.nfuonline.com or via CallFirst on 0870 845 8458. s Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, neither the NFU nor the author can accept liability for errors and or omissions. © NFU 85 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 86 H & &W Engineerin ng ALL ASPECTS OF GR AIN HANDLING AND STOR AGE PROJEC T MANAGEMENT INSTALL AT A ION SERVICE C MAINTENAN N CE DAVID HEAD MARK DEAL +4 4(0)1622 6814 63 +4 4(0)7739 035 6 37 +4 4(0)7974 43 4928 w w w.handweng.co.uk contac t@handweng.co.uk MAIN DE ALERS FOR R WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 87 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 88 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 89 WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 90 THE HISTORY OF THE MK9 TA805 SPITFIRE During the dark days of the Battle of Britain, the sight and sound of a Hurricane and Spitfire overhead gave hope and encouragement to the civilians caught up in the war. It was however the Spitfire that became the icon of the battle. With victory in 1945 thousands of Spitfires were scrapped and only the later marks were to continue in RAF service until the late 1950’s. One aircraft built just before the war ended was a Spitfire Mk9 serialised TA805. It was built at the Supermarine works at Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands and started its career with the RAF at 29 Maintenance Unit in December 1944. It joined the183 Gold Coast Squadron based at Chilbolton on the 17th June 1945. The squadron were then converting from the Hawker Typhoon to the Spitfire. It did not however stay long with 183 as it was ransferred to the 234 Madras Presidency Squadron at Bentwaters in Suffolk on the 27th July. This squadron had converted from the Mustang to the Spitfire and were shortly due to fly down to Hawkinge in Kent to attend a Practice Armament Camp. After one month the squadron returned to Bentwaters where, with the cessation of war, 234 Squadron were to be part of a wing of 24 Squadrons led by the legendary Battle of Britain ace and later famous test pilot, Wg Cdr Roland P Beamont DSO and Bar DFC. This wing flew the 1945 Battle of Britain commemoration flight over London in September and it is possible that TA805 was one of the aircraft taking part. The mortal remains of TA805 arrived at the 90 Airframe Assemblies works, Sandown, Isle of Wright in early 1992. Having previously been in storage in Sussex. The dormant period continued for another 3 years or so until the current owners acquired the aircraft. Work to return her to flying condition started in early 1996. The period up until July 1997 being taken up with the manufacture of the many pieces that make up a Spitfire fuselage. These small pieces being made up into subassemblies such as fuselage Frame 9. Also along with the new build items, as much original material as possible was removed from the remains, for incorporation into the rebuild. With the kit of parts ready, assembly in the build fixture commenced in August 1997. New skins started being cut in and drilled off in November 1997. Skinning work continued, WKPMA Schedule & Programme 2015.qxp_Layout 1 17/08/2015 11:32 Page 91 E ABBREVIATED HISTORY • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Photo Courtesy of Paul Campbell / Kent Spitfire • • • • Built at Castle Bromwich, 1945 Delivered to Royal Air Force as TA805, 1945 Accepted by 39MU, January 3, 1945 Allocated to 183 Squadron, June 24, 1945 Transferred to 234 Squadron, August 2, 1945 Delivered to South African Air Force as ???
