The report looks at both mining and in-situ oilsands projects, as well as upgraders. New or proposed projects are included only if they are active or can reasonably be expected to start construction within the next two years. This report can be used as a resource for job seekers, contractors and others who are interested in the near-term status of oilsands development in the region. OTHER PROJECT LISTS This report is organized primarily for job seekers and contractors in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo making immediate or near-term career and business decisions. There are other sources of oilsands project lists which include different information, such as production capacity, projects with longer lead times and projects in other parts of Alberta. • Oilsands Review magazine, JuneWarren-Nickle’s Energy Group: oilsandsreview.com • Alberta Oil Sands Industry Quarterly Update, Government of Alberta: albertacanada.com/business/statistics-and-publications.aspx The information in this report is current as of November 2012. This report is updated twice per year and available at woodbuffalo.net.! 1 JOB SEEKERS as welders and pipe fitters, process operators and heavy equipment operators. Maintenance work is often contracted to oil and gas service companies. Looking for work in Wood Buffalo? This report provides a list of oilsands projects in the region and their current status. You can use this report as a guide to see which projects are operating, which are under construction and which are proposed for the near future. The list is broken down by surface mining (open pit) and in-situ (inplace) oilsands developments, as well as upgraders. There are many phases to an oilsands project. Each phase creates different types of jobs: Pre-Construction: Before construction starts, there is exploration, engineering, regulatory and financing activity under way on some projects. Construction: During construction, oilsands companies contract companies to build everything from access roads to steam plants and refineries. Certified tradespeople, labourers and heavy equipment operators are some of the workers needed during the construction phase. Most construction workers are hired by construction companies, not by the mining companies. Operations and maintenance: When construction is complete, oilsands companies employ a variety of skilled workers to operate and maintain the plants. This includes engineers and technologists, as well as management, business and administration staff. They also employ certified tradespeople, such To see which oilsands companies or contractors are hiring, go directly to their corporate websites (see “Contact Information” at the end of this document). Most companies post their job openings on their corporate websites under headings such as Careers, Employment or Jobs. You can also find job opportunities and information about working in the Fort McMurray area on Facebook at facebook.com/fortmcmurrayjobs. QUICK FACT If a person is looking for a job that comes with camp accommodations, they should start by looking at the construction contractors who do a lot of work in the area.If the job posting doesn’t mention camp accommodations, and the job seeker does not know if they are provided, they must apply for the job and talk to the contractor during the interview to find out specific details. The information in this report is current as of November 2012. This report is updated twice per year and available at woodbuffalo.net.! 2 Help is available For more information on finding employment in Fort McMurray, contact the Alberta Works office at 780-743-7192. CONTRACTORS Oilsands developments create many opportunities for contractors who want to work in the region. Contractors often work directly for oilsands companies doing construction and maintenance work. They may also subcontract to larger construction companies. Work is done not only in and around Fort McMurray, but across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and in the Athabasca Deposit outside the municipality. Contractors can use this report as a guide to see the status of different oilsands projects that they might want to bid on. To investigate contracting opportunities, contact major employers, including oilsands companies. There are four oilsands surface mining companies currently operating in the region: Suncor Energy, Syncrude, Shell Albian Sands (formerly known as Athabasca OilSands Project) and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. There are also dozens of in-situ production companies and hundreds of construction companies that may sub-contract. Start with a search of company websites. Some companies, such as Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Cenovus and Suncor Energy, have detailed information for contractors online. If information is not on a company’s website, call its main phone number and ask who to talk to about contracting opportunities or vendor pre-qualification. The following section provides online resources for contractors who are interested in working in the region. QUICK FACT According to the Oil Sands Developers Group, each dollar invested in the oilsands creates approximately $9 worth of economic activity globally, and $6 of activity in Alberta. Depending on the needs of the industry, there are between 8,000 and 30,000 people employed to build and maintain facilities at any given time. For more information, visit oilsandsdevelopers.ca. The information in this report is current as of November 2012. This report is updated twice per year and available at woodbuffalo.net.! 3 Online Resources for Contractors • Developed by the Government of Canada, AlbertaCanada.com albertacanada.com) is an online resource that provides information about doing business in Alberta and immigrating to Alberta. Through leadership and innovation, it enhances business growth and prosperity.. CONVENTIONAL OIL VS. ALBERTA OILSANDS Conventional oil flows through a well without stimulation and through a pipeline without processing or dilution. Conventional oil is made up of a mixture of pentanes and heavier hydrocarbons recoverable at a well from an underground reservoir and liquid at atmospheric pressure and temperature. The Alberta Oilsands are a thick, viscous mixture of bitumen hydrocarbons combined with water, sand, heavy metals and clay. The bitumen is separated from the oilsands through heating processes and is then upgraded into higher-valued products for end-use markets. For more information, visit albertacanada.com/ business/industries/og-conventional-crude-oiland-oil-sands.aspx. The information in this report is current as of November 2012. This report is updated twice per year and available at woodbuffalo.net.! 4 GLOSSARY OF OILSANDS TERMS specified area. The land must be reclaimed and returned to the Crown at the end of operations. Barrel The traditional measurement for crude oil volumes. One barrel equals 159 litres (42 U.S. gallons). There are 6.29 barrels in one cubic metre of oil. Muskeg A water-soaked layer of decaying plant material that is one to three metres thick and found on top of the overburden. Bitumen Naturally occurring, viscous mixture of hydrocarbons that contains high levels of sulphur and nitrogen compounds. In its natural state, it is not recoverable at a commercial rate through a well because it is too thick to flow. Bitumen typically makes up about 10 per cent of the weight of oil sand, but saturation varies. Oilsands Bitumen-soaked sand that is located in four geographic regions of Alberta: Athabasca, Wabasca, Cold Lake and Peace River. The Athabasca deposit is the largest, encompassing more than 42,340 square kilometres. Total deposits of bitumen in Alberta are estimated at 1.7 trillion to 2.5 trillion barrels. Extraction A process unique to the oilsands industry, which separates the bitumen from the oil sand using hot water, steam and caustic soda. Royalty The Crown’s share of production or revenue. About three-quarters of Canadian crude oil is produced from lands on which the Crown holds mineral rights, including the oilsands. The lease or permit between the developer and the Crown sets out the arrangements for sharing the risks and rewards. Greenhouse gases Gases commonly believed to be connected to climate change and global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common, but greenhouse gases also include other light hydrocarbons (such as methane) and nitrous oxide. In-situ Latin for “in place.” In-situ recovery refers to various methods used to recover deeply buried bitumen deposits. Lease A legal document from the province of Alberta that gives an operator the right to extract bitumen from the oil sand existing within a Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) An in-situ production process using two closely spaced horizontal wells: one for steam injection and the other for production of the bitumen/water emulsion. Synthetic crude oil (SCO) A manufactured crude oil comprised of naphtha, distillate and gas oil-boiling range material. Can range from high-quality, light and sweet bottomless crude to heavy, sour blends. The information in this report is current as of November 2012. This report is updated twice per year and available at woodbuffalo.net.! Tailings A combination of water, sand, silt and fine clay particles that are a by-product of removing the bitumen from the oil sand. Thermal recovery Any process by which heat energy is used to reduce the viscosity of bitumen in-situ to facilitate recovery. Truck-and-shovel mining Large electric or hydraulic shovels are used to remove the oil sand and load very large trucks. The trucks haul the oil sand to dump pockets where it is conveyed or pipelined to the extraction plant. Trucks and shovels are more economic to operate than the bucketwheel reclaimers and draglines they have replaced at oilsands mines. Upgrading The process of converting heavy oil or bitumen into synthetic crude, either through the removal of carbon (coking) or the addition of hydrogen (hydroconversion).
