Thanks to the Volunteers
It is not often that you have a group of volunteers as reliable and committed as I have had the luxury and pleasure
of working with at each Event.
I would like to thank Laura Monaco for creating the centerpieces and the Family Tree displays for the Gala,along
with Judy Marcus and Rick Rubin. They worked for virtually weeks in order to get the results we all wanted.
Thanks to Cheryle Cohen for tracking the RSVP's, updating me several times a week and also printing the table
cards.
Thanks also to the entire committee, Rachel Weinstock, Maggie Grotzinger, Nancy Simmons, Cory Schneider, Joyce
Green, Barbara Putterman, Debby Reuvenny and Barb Bazelon.
Thanks to Robin Schuldenfrei for the design for our invites, RSVP's , posters, and terrific Program book.
Kellie Portman did a great job of interviewing the honorees,which took many hours.
Thank you to Josh Damrauer for filming the interviews of the honorees. Josh spent weeks editing almost 2 hours of
interviews for each family into 11 minutes of video for each family and he filmed the entire event for our archives.
Kudos to Susan Sussman for always being so supportive and for additionally providing the office backup that is
so incredibly valuable. Many thanks go out to Will Watson for his never ending help by setting up the tables and
chairs and always being so willing to be of assistance in any way.
Thank you Norman Gras and your entire staff for the wonderful hors-d’oeurves,dinner and dessert. All who
attended,enjoyed.

Finding Ecstacy at the JCC
Visiting the JCC pre-school before Pesach was an ecstatic experience. The children were so excited!
Being in their presence made everyone else excited, too – their teachers and visiting grandparents and
even a middle-aged rabbi. Aliveness is contagious!
The delight of those precious children reminded me of the Chassidic concept of hitlahavut, a state
of enthusiasm or ecstasy, occasionally reached in prayer and sometimes outside of it. At its essence,
hitlahavut is an awareness – just a passing glimpse really - into an experience of G-d’s presence in
everything at all times.
Though the toddlers of the JCC pre-school have probably not learned about hitlahavut yet, their
capacity to experience unbridled joy and excitement is related to what the Chassidim were describing.
Children often have the ability to experience their emotions – happy and sad and everything in-between – in an
unfiltered and embodied way unlike so many of us “sophisticated” adults – with our refined abilities to analyze,
compartmentalize and multi-task.
What would it take for us to experience our lives a little more fully?
Abba Kovner – the poet who served as a partisan fighter during the Holocaust and went on to organize the
emigration of hundreds of thousands of children to Israel after the war – offers some wisdom:
“Remember the past,
Live in the present,
Trust in the future.”
Perhaps, Kovner is teaching us that because we remember the past and trust in the future, we can and must live in
the present.
Living in the present begins with paying attention, with noticing what’s going on in our lives.
Living in the present means appreciating the wonder of a child’s smile, a sunrise, or even of drinking a glass of
water, taking a walk or singing a song.
Living in the present means – please forgive the pun - being really present – and profoundly compassionate and
genuinely curious - in relationship with family members, friends and others.
Living in the present is something that we do regularly as a Chisuk Emuna family when we gather to pray or study
or do acts of loving-kindness, in celebration or in sorrow.
During this season, as we journey with our ancestors from Egypt to Sinai, from slavery to physical freedom, spiritual
revelation and head towards the Promised Land, let us strive to live with hitlahvut, a burning flame, an aliveness that
leads us to experience G-d, our fellow human journeyers and the world, with greater enthusiasm and connectedness.

Bat Mitzvah of Lily Woolf
On May 17, 2014, Lily Rose Woolf will celebrate her
Bat Mitzvah at Chisuk Emuna. Lily is in the sixth grade
at Linglestown Middle School. She loves hanging out
with friends, social media and playing basketball with
coach Terri Travers & the JCC Middle School team. She
loves her cousins (Aunts & Uncles, too), visiting them
whenever she can. Lily has a great sense of adventure…recent summers include exciting trips with her
friends at JCC Travel Camp. Highlights have included
thrilling water parks, arcades, and concerts.
In her spare time, Lily enjoys baking and the art of
cake decorating. She’s also very creative, mastering
nail art and hair braiding! For her Bat Mitzvah project, Lily is collecting baking goods and supplies to donate to Shalom House, a local shelter for women
and children. Collections will be held at two locations-the Harrisburg JCC
and at Chisuk Emuna Congregation through May 9th.
Lily is grateful to have worked with Shayna Solomon, her Bat Mitzvah tutor, as well as Rabbi Muroff and all of her other Hebrew School teachers. A
big shout-out goes to Lily’s teachers at the Silver Academy who instilled in
her a great love for Judaism and the love of Israel. Sending many thanks to
all for inspiring and teaching her.
Lily will be celebrating her simcha with her parents, Jill Parnes and Jerry
Woolf, siblings Abbey and Addam, Emily and Noah, and grandparents Herb
and Marcy Parnes, Ann and Joe Weiss, and Merv and DeDe Woolf.

Bar Mitzvah

Anthony will
be called to
the
Torah
as a Bar
Mitzvah.
His reading
will be a
portion
of
Naso and the Haftorah about the
announcement of the birth of
Shimshon (Samson).
Tony is a 7th grader at the Central
Dauphin Middle School. He is a
treasurer on the student council and
a writer for the school newspaper
“The Rampage”. He volunteers at
various fund raising events, such
as school plays, musicals, and any
other school projects. His favorite
subjects are science, math, history,
and economics.
Outside of school, Tony studies
martial arts at Kim’s Tae Kwon Do
studio, where he mastered the skills
to become a Black Belt - first dan.
He also likes swimming and plans
to join the JCC swim team after
his Bar Mitzvah. Tony has been
a participant of the JCC summer
camps for several years, where he
developed friendships with some
other worthy friends. He enjoys
playing “Minecraft”, “Skyrim”and
“Fall-out” and he likes hunting,
shooting, biking and hanging out
with his friends.

Hershey Park
Volunteer
Program
The Hershey Park Rides Volunteer
Program is in full swing for this
spring, summer and fall. Anyone
interested in volunteering should
contact Felix Thau (540-9288) or
Stuart Garner (232-0756) for further
information. Everyone who signs
up will be placed on an email list to
be notified of volunteer openings as
quickly as possible. This program
is a great way to make money for
Chisuk Emuna, and you receive a
voucher for park admission for each
shift worked.

Chisuk Emuna to Purchase AED
Congregants Learn CPR
Recently the Executive Committee unanimously agreed to purchase an
AED (automatic external defibrillator) for the synagogue, for the potential
unfortunate circumstance of someone suffering a cardiac arrest while in
the building. However, they also felt that CPR training should be provided
as well. On March 30th, Josh Glick, son of Drs. Mark Glick and Maggie
Grotzinger, trained approximately 20 congregants and staff on performing
lifesaving CPR. Use of dummies to practice on was generously provided
by the simulation lab at Hershey Medical Center. Josh also demonstrated
how to use an AED. While we hope to never need to use this training, the
congregation thanks Josh for preparing us in case of emergency.
If anyone wishes to make a donation to help cover the cost of the AED,
please contact Susan Sussman at the office. The cost of the AED will be
approximately $1,400.
The synagogue will also be purchasing a DVD from the American
Heart Association that will provide instruction on basic CPR, so that other
congregants can learn as well.

Emuna will hold a meeting at the
synagogue to elect officers and
plan events. Your involvement and
commitment to Sisterhood is vital!
You do not have to want to hold an

The Men’s Club presents Hearing
Men’s Voices on Sunday, May 25th
at 9:30 am at Chisuk Emuna. Dr.
Mark Glick will lead the session titled
“Spirituality: Unique Stumbling
Blocks for Men.” The group will
explore barriers that men face
in trying to lead a more spiritual
life, and get closer to God. By
examining the story of the prophet,
Bilaam, as well as sharing personal
experiences, we will attempt to
carve out a path to a more spiritual
existence.
