Week 8 - John Therry Catholic High School
John Therry Catholic High School
Term 1 Week 8B
Almighty, ever-living God,
you gave our Saviour the Command
to become man and undergo the cross,
as an example of humility for all
men to follow.
We have the lessons of his sufferings:
give us also the fellowship of his
resurrection.
We make our prayer through our Lord.
Amen.
R. My God, my God, why have you
abandoned me?
All who see me deride me.
They curl their lips, they toss their heads.
“He trusted in the Lord, let him save him;
let him release him if this is his friend.” R.
Many dogs have surrounded me,
a band of the wicked beset me.
They tear holes in my hands and my feet.
I count every one of my bones. R.
They divide my clothing among them.
They cast lots for my robe.
O Lord, do not leave me alone,
my strength, make haste to help me! R.
I will tell of your name to my brethren
and praise you where they are assembled.
“You who fear the Lord give him praise;
all sons of Jacob, give him glory.
Revere him, Israel’s sons. R.

Message from the Assistant Principal
John Therry celebrated Harmony Day with a wonderful concert this
week. Harmony Day is about acknowledging and celebrating our
differences and the beauty that this brings to the world. In watching
the concert I was reminded of a story that I shared with our
students about the ‘broken bucket’. I have included a version of this
story below and it has some wonderful messages about
imperfection and the wonderful gifts we offer others in our own
imperfection.
The Broken Bucket
A farmer had two large buckets, each hung on the end of a pole which he carried across his neck.
One of the buckets had a crack in it, and while the other bucket was perfect and always delivered a
full portion of water at the end of the walk from the stream, the cracked bucket arrived only half full.
For a full two years this went on daily, delivering only one and a half buckets full of water to the
farmers house. The perfect bucket was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it
was made. But the poor cracked bucket was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it
was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
"I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you" said the cracked bucket one day. "Why?"
asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?" "I have delivered only half my load because this crack
in my side causes water to leak out all the way back. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this
work, and you don't get full value from your efforts."
The bearer said to the bucket, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of your
path, but not on the other buckets side? For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful
flowers. Without you being just the way you are, we would not have this beauty to grace our field."
Be kind to yourself and trust that being created in the image and likeness of God makes us all
incredibly important and ‘perfect’ in our imperfection.
God Bless

Being MoneySmart in Global Money Week (14-20
March)
Great things are happening at our school and Global
Money Week is a good opportunity to highlight our
MoneySmart activity, recognising the importance of
learning about money and finances.
Our school community provides students, teachers,
parents and carers a chance to talk about and engage
with money regularly.
At John Therry, since the time of accreditation in early
2015, MoneySmart workshops for staff and parents
have helped involve the entire John Therry
community in this engaging educational initiative. In
2016, MoneySmart teaching and learning programs
have been included in ICT classes, Science, English,
Mathematics, PDHPE, RE, Year 9 Short Courses
(Financial Literacy)and TAS courses and students are
gaining, not only a deeper understanding of various
financial literacy skills, but have, definitely, become
more ‘money smart’.
This week, join teachers, parents and communities
nationally and internationally in conversations
about saving and being responsible money
managers. Having these conversations early in life
helps young people develop the knowledge, skills
and behaviours to make informed financial
decisions now and into the future.

Background
Financial literacy is about having the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to make sound financial
decisions, based on personal circumstances, to improve financial wellbeing.
ASIC's MoneySmart Teaching program supports teachers and parents in these discussions and provides ready to use units
of work, teacher professional development, activities and videos. By drawing on everyday life experiences, to engage
children in learning the language of money, the prospects for teachers and parents are limitless.
For parents:

ASIC's MoneySmart website provides tools and resources to support and guide parents in developing good
money and financial habits with their children
https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/life-events-and-you/families
For teachers:

Professional development aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to build confidence and
capability to incorporate consumer and financial literacy into their teaching practice. ASIC's recently released
MoneySmart Maths primary teachers is a professional learning module that explores authentic learning for
primary students through numeracy and financial mathematics.

Dear Parents / Carers
Anzac Day is an important time to commemorate those who serve and have served in the Australian
Defence Forces. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues
to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
As part of our annual commemoration John Therry would like to invite all members of the community
who have had an involvement in the Australian Defence force to attend the school assembly. This
includes family members, both past and present.
The Anzac Assembly will be held on Thursday 7 April from 9.30am in the William Murray Hall.
You are especially invited to stay for a morning tea and informal discussion with our year ten students
who are collaborating on the Anzac Schools’ Project. The focus for this year is on 1916 and
Australian involvement on the Western Front. The students will be filming parts of the assembly and
morning tea proceedings.

John Therry Athletics Carnival
This year’s carnival will take place on the 1st April, Friday Week 10 Term 1. The carnival takes place in
Term 1 due to the Diocesan and NSW CCC carnivals moving forward in time. Our carnival coincides
with the end of the athletics season so our elite students should be on top of their game to break
even more records this year.
Students are to make their own way to and from the carnival. No buses will be diverted to the
carnival. Picton/Camden/Appin buses will go to school as normal and students will then need to hop
on the chartered bus. Bus will be leaving at 8:20am from the bus-bay.
Students are to arrive at the complex for an 8:30 Learning Group, before moving around event
