This event is being staged on the Wes King Ranch near Odessa, Washington. This is a working cattle ranch and as such, we must do our best to have as little impact as possible on this property. This is private property leased for the weekend from Wes King, owner of the ranch, to be used only for the weekend of April 9th and 10th. Only those signed up for an event may travel the grounds outside of the camping area. This property is not open for general play riding at any time. We all know how hard it is to find an area suitable for an event like the Desert 100. Please respect the wishes of the Stumpjumpers and Mr. King in regards to the property, so in future years we may have the possibility of continued use. Please stay on the marked course at all times. We would like to have as little impact on the land as possible. You may have questioned the Event Flyer in regards to bringing a clean motorcycle to the event. The reason is to mitigate the possibility of introducing unwanted weeds onto the property. I might point out that in Nevada a clean vehicle, whether bike or truck, is required because the BLM does not want plant seeds brought up from Arizona, California or Mexico introduced into their desert. As always, campfires are not allowed. Please clean up your camp and PIT area before leaving. The Stumpjumpers want you to have an enjoyable weekend, but please remember that we are guests here. Treat this property like it was your own front yard. You do not have to mow it, but leave it as you found it. Thank you and have a great time. LAND OWNERS Wes King Loretta Weber Gary Schoessler Norman Ott RACE CHAIRMAN Pete Wisner RACE CO-CHAIRMAN Mike Decker The Race Chairman, Pete Wisner and Race Co-Chairman, Mike Decker would like to acknowledge all of the hard work and time invested by the SJMC Members. It is the individual and team efforts put forth by our volunteers that make this event “The Greatest Off-Road Event in the Northwest”. FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 6 A Note From the Chairman Without the cooperation and support of all those involved this event would not be possible..and especially without the support of you, the racers and the poker runners! In return, the Stumpjumpers donate a significant portion of the proceeds to many different charitable organizations both locally and statewide, as well as to organizations that are fighting to protect our right to ride in this state. Pete Wisner, 2012 Race Chairman On behalf of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club I would like to offer a hearty THANK YOU! to everybody for making the trip to Odessa to participate in the 42nd Annual Desert 100. For the Stumpjumpers this is the event that defines us as a club and because of that we pour our collective heart and soul into it to make sure that it goes off smoothly and everyone has a great time. This event takes many months of preparation and planning, coordination with landowners, local law enforcement, county officials, and the generous business owners and citizens of Odessa. With this in mind I urge everyone attending this event to become involved with the Northwest Motorcycle Association. It is easy and inexpensive to become a member and the more members that are involved the more influence the NMA has. If you own a dirtbike there is no excuse to not be a member...it is an organization that fights for what YOU want! You can find them on the web and become a member online at www.nmaoffroad.org Thanks again for coming out to the Desert 100... I wish you all a safe, enjoyable, and fun-filled weekend! Braaaap! Pete Wisner 2012 Race Chairman WHO ARE THE STUMPJUMPERS? W e are a family oriented, off-road trail riding motorcycle club that loves to have fun. Promoting motorcycling and the safe use of motorcycles is one of our main goals. We were founded in 1967 and have one of the biggest driving forces in off road motorcycle events, in the Puget Sound area. We promote many of the most well known off road motorcycle events that enthusiasts look forward to each year. With the main purpose of the club to have fun, we also have club play days on a monthly basis. Each month one or more of our members put together an event exclusively for club members and friends. With fun in mind, these events range from trail rides, poker runs, camp outs, and occasionally a nice relaxing barbecue. Club Sponsored Events The World Famous Desert 100 - Since 1970 when this annual race began, the Desert 100, once known as Mattawa, has been the most prestigious off road race of the year. In additon to the race, the Desert 100 weekend features the following events: Family Poker Run - This is a fun event for the whole family and each year it gathers hundreds of riders just looking to have a fun ride and great time. Iron Man Poker Run - This is not for the faint at heart. Designed for the more advanced rider, this event is much longer and harder than our family poker run. Dual Sport Ride - We also put on a very fun ride for those who have dual sport bikes. People always look forward to these events knowing they are in for a fun day. Frost Bite Cross-Country Grand Prix - The White Knuckle of 2004 had such good feedback that the Frost Bite was created to please the appetite of those who loved the White Knuckle. Golden Spike Hare Scrambles - This is one of the most well known Hare Scrambles in the state. This event attracts some serious racers but most just come to have a very fun time. White Knuckle Cross-Country Grand Prix - Another well known race that features some “character”. Our Three Main Points are: HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! Monthly Club Meetings Even though our monthly meetings are restricted to adults only, it is a great way to get together and enjoy what every one of our members has to offer. This is where we plan and organize our club events, but we also have a lot of fun in doing so. When do we meet? We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Where do we meet? At the American Legion Hall in Mountlake Terrace. 22909 - 59th Avenue West. Are Visitors Welcome? Absolutely. If you are thinking of getting involved, please come to any of our meetings. COME JOIN THE CLUB If you are thinking of looking into a fun and friendly off road motorcycle club then you owe it to yourself to come and check us out. Every member of the Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club are members for one reason, and that is to have fun. Monthly meetings are for adult only, however the monthly play days are for our families and friends of all ages. At the meetings, we plan activities for the whole family. Trail riding, having fun, our families and motorcycles are what we love the most, and not necessarily in that order. Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul. Chairman’s note: Most of you reading this have ridden Saddle Mountain near Mattawa and have probably heard of “Habeck’s Hill”...the steep, loose, monster of a hill that runs from almost the top of the ridge down to the sand dunes along the Columbia River. Many of us have ridden down it, and many of us have attempted to climb it. I have never witnessed anybody even come close to making it to the top, although I always hear stories like “I have a friend who knows a guy that saw so-and-so make it” but I have yet to speak directly with anybody that made it or witnessed it being climbed successfully. If you have done it or witnessed it done let me know! This is a reprint from our 1973 program and is the story of the man for whom this hill is named ...multi-time Mattawa 100 winner Ken Habeck. Desert Fox, King of the Desert; put it any way you want and the first name you hear is Ken Habeck. appealed to him because by that fall he had a 250 Greeves and went racing at Kiona. Sit around the tav having a few cool ones and everyone says next time they’ll get him but next time never comes. He just keeps on winning. In 1963 Kiona was the big desert race in the area. Big machines like Nortons, Beezers and Trumpets were the in thing. The 25o’s just didn’t cut it. But, there weren’t too many Greeves and only one Ken Habeck...he took 16th overall! In 1964 he made up his mind to win Kiona and he did!! In 1965 the Greeves broke and replacement parts weren’t that plentiful so he rode a Triumph. That year he ran scrambles. His fame began to grow as he won many of the Western Washington races. What makes Ken run? He’s probably the only one that really knows all the reasons. Competition has alot to do with it. There is the satisfaction of putting himself and his machine against literally hundreds of riders and doing them in. Physical fitness, determination and the will to win have to be contributing factors. Being a wrestling coach and state champion wrestler gives you a clue as to his physical shape! Ken started motorcycling back in 1963 when he bought a Honda step-through ‘55’ for fishing. It must have really FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 16 The lure of the two-stroke was too much and in 1966 a new machine came to the United States from Sweden - the Husqvarna. There were only three in the US then: Ken’s, Malcolm Smith’s and another in California. He’s been riding Huskys ever since. The machine only weighed 205 pounds and had a super trick light frame, seat and wheels. It wasn’t much for comfort but it was probably the quickest bike he ever rode. That year he jumped off to a win at Ashcroft, Canada. At Kiona he led then world champion Torsten Hallman but finally, after 80 miles, dropped to a second place win. Pretty good, huh? At the same time, he was riding scrambles and doing well enough to win the Northwest Championship Scrambles, beating Amil Ahola, no less! To finish off the year he went to Idaho and won the Idaho State Championship. Quite a year!! In 1967 Ken was president of the Everett Motorcycle Club. He put on the first two Mattawa 100 mile races; in April at Vantage and in September near Mattawa. Those were the forerunners of this year’s Mattawa 100. He won the National Cross Country Championship at Cherry Creek, Utah, against the nation’s best, including the Elkins brothers. If you ever get a chance get Ken to tell you about this race. It has to be a paramount of race stories. The will to win was tremendous when he had to go to 10,000 feet in elevation where the air was so thin that the bike wouldn’t run and he had to push it! Again in 1967 he won the Ashcroft race and the Idaho State Championship. He also placed 9th overall in the Barstow-toVegas run. This was on a very tired machine and a half-hour late start! Dusty Coppage won the race. In 1968 he was the Idaho State Champion for the third year. He won the Evergreen State Scramble Championship also. In 1969 Ken retired from racing to get his Masters at the UW. He returned in the fall of 1970 in full swing on a 400 Husky, winning every race he finished. In 1971 he really did it by winning Mattawa in the spring and in the fall. He won the Boise Cross Country beating both Gary and Dewayne Jones on their Yamahas. He won at Christmas Valley and Bend, Oregon. He also won all the above races (again) in 1972! These are just the highlights of Ken’s career in racing. There have been many, many lesser races and moto-x wins. Every year there are old and new very fast people that will try and do him in. But, when the dust clears, the smart money will be on Ken Habeck. Don’t be discouraged though...come on out to Mattawa on April 7 and 8 because Ken’s going to try to make it five in a row! “Keep “Keep your your dirt dirt bike bike in in good good repair: repair: motorcycle motorcycle boots boots are are not not comfortable comfortable for for walking.” walking.” www.cyclopsadventuresports.com • 800-624-0278 STUMPJUMPERS MC | DESERT 100 | MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 RACE CHAIRMEN Pete Wisner Race Chairman - 2012 Mike Decker Race Co-Chairman 2012 Jerry Allen Race Chairman 1995 thru 1997 and 1999 thru 2002 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Dutch Binckley & Ron Dutch Binckley & Ron Dutch Binckley & Ron Dutch Binckley & Ron Fred Sessions Fred Sessions Ron Tackett Ken Lee Montie Hamilton Howard Larson Jerry Gullickson Tom Jesmer Garnett Snow Garnett Snow ____ no race ____ Jerry Gullickson Jerry Gullickson Sam Tisdell Sam Tisdell Dick Sharp Tom Jesmer Skooks Pong Skooks Pong Ken Cresap Ken Cresap Jerry Allen Jerry Allen Jerry Allen Ken Porter Jerry Allen Jerry Allen Jerry Allen Jerry Allen Steve Davies Steve Davies Kerry Konkler Kerry Konkler Phil Wagner Phil Wagner James Brady Don Larson Don Larson Pete Wisner Tackett Tackett Tackett Tackett You will never see dirt bikes in the psychiatrist’s parking lot. FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 18 Toowild Toowild and and the the Voice Voice of of the the Desert Desert!! In 1995 I got my first dirt bike. My son Ashton and I were the proud owners of two 1995 Honda XR200s from Everett Powersports. We spent a lot of time riding with friends: John Beal on a Honda XL650, Jack Miller on a Honda XR200, Jake Hulse on a Honda CR125, and Jim McGinty on any one of his 6 or 7 dirt bikes. It was McGinty who invited us to camp out and ride our first Desert 100 in 1996. He called it “the biggest and best race in the state”. I broke my collar bone “racing” the Ironman Poker Run. John and Ash did the 100 miler on Sunday, and we have been back every year since. A few months after the Desert 100 John Beal shows up at Reiter Pit with a flyer for the Waterville Double Points Season Opener for the Northwest Arenacross. John thought we should try the series. It sounded to him like a good way to ride all winter. We all said we would plan on it. We met Tom Jesmer and his family at the Monroe Arenacross. Tom was fast and connected in dirt bikes, the NMA, Stumpjumpers, and support from Pops at Lynnwood Motoplex. He was all setup and his sons Trent and Shaen were dirt bike prodigies. I wanted to be Tom’s equal! We raced in the 40+ class, the oldest age group class at that time. Tom was on a 92 Yamaha WR250, Gary and Keith Goodnight, and Steve Miller were all on Kawasaki KDX200s. Steve Bader was on a Honda CR250, Bob Meadows was riding a 620 KTM and Mike Donnelly was on a 93 Yamaha WR250. We were all there with our families. At that time the thinking was the new 250 CC motocross bikes were just too much for the parents to handle. Anyway, all those headlights came in handy when you had a couple of hundred 2 strokes inside the cow palace. On a frosty winter morning the visibility could get real low. Good times to remember! Listening to Tom’s voice echoing over the loudspeakers as the Desert 100 Master of Ceremonies all those years inspired me to come up with a nick name for Tom, “The Voice of the Desert.” The nick name really did not stick at first, but my family and friends knew who I was referring to when I said the “Voice.” Now it is January 2011. The Voice and I are taking a break while on a Beverly, Wild Horse extreme trail ride. Tom was saying he would need to start getting his Yamaha YZ450 set up for motocross. He was turning 60 and he wanted to do the International Old Timer Motocross Series (IOTMX). His goal was to overall the 60 Master class. By the way, not just anybody can ride in the Master Class; it is by invitation only from a consensus of the 14 regional OTMX Club representatives. The IOTMX is 14 events promoted by 14 different clubs at their local tracks. Each event is usually a practice on Friday, 3 long motos on Saturday, with a group dinner Saturday night, and 2 more long motos on Sunday. Exclusive use of the track for the weekend ensures the tracks are groomed for the IOTMX classes for 40 through 80 year old age groups, plus a support class for the families. Yep, 80 year olds racing motocross! I hear 80 is the new 70, or something like that. The IOTMX series championship would be scored using your best 8 overall finishes from the 14 weekend events. 70 possible motos plus practices over 9 months, add up to a lot of riding. There is also a Northwest Challenge series consisting of six events in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, British Columbia and Alberta. It is a smaller commitment and a lot less traveling, a series within a series. Without much thought I told the Voice “I was all in for both of the series.” He looked a little skeptical, but said he would certainly enjoy the company. When I announced to my family my intentions to race the IOTMX series, my daughter Holly looked at my margarita and asked where I cooked up that idea. Ash just shook his head and smiled. Ranelle gave me an I don’t understand, but sure why not look, and asked how long had it been since I was on a motocross track. 10 or 11 years? But I had no doubt, or was it blind faith! So the Voice and I headed south on February 20th with enough extra time to trail ride outside of Laughlin Nevada. It turned out to be the greatest place in the U.S. to practice for Baja, and the location of an annual WORCS continued on page 22 FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 20 ts) A Poin M , WA (N hland Ric urs) s MC, e 2 Ho Rapid WA Cours , n g r le n a o o d (L a, H en ) m, WA , Gold nd Fle Points ingha he Sa ille GP ll T v e ts) (NMA ie B — , d A y h d a W t E , 9 w A Poin y l, 1 r d y dmil Clea A (NM Spee c in W bruar n , M W e a , le F e g V t e R u Th 1. ay, To line O , Hann th — Round utlaw tadde ne 10 Racew S u O , J le e ly a h il d T r e l-B 2. Miles of single track through cactus and mesquite, endless camel hump single jumps, bedrock hill climbs and a sick 35’– 40’ cross canyon jump. We really got lucky and met some good locals that spent 3 days showing us around Dirt Bike Disneyland in the warm sunny weather. Wednesday afternoon we pulled into Arizona Cycle Park, at Buckeye, Arizona, about 40 miles west of Phoenix. The track was down in a gigantic pit covering maybe 50 to 80 acres. Lots of big table tops, an 80+’ step up jump, the track was awesome. The hair on my neck was up and I was getting a little yellow streak. I told the Voice, “Oh Shit, I am way over my head.” The Voice said, “Just take it easy and it will probably be OK, let’s go walk the track.” Practice Wednesday and Friday helped to take the edge off. By Saturday morning the Voice was clearing everything on the track except the large step up. He had that YZ450 wound out! Saturday morning, it is finally race day and the pressure is on. The Voice trades moto wins back and forth with Master Mike Perry from Oregon. It then rained all night and the races were canceled for Sunday. That left the Voice with the overall for the weekend and a good start to the series. I had joined up with no right to expect anything more than a lot of riding and a long drive, but ending up 2nd for the first weekend was not to shabby. Back on the road, north of Vegas we drove into blowing 6 degree snow that lasted all night. We felt like Ice Road Truckers. It’s starting to sink in that traveling and racing MX is a big big commitment at any age and level. March 11, 12 & 13 Tulare MX Cycle Park, Tulare, CA at the Central Valley OTMX Club event. California is big time into motocross and this track is a professional set up. Friday practice went well and the weather was that perfect California spring. The Voice had 60 Master Terry Sage, ex Honda factory flat tracker and aggressive OT MXer, to race plus other fast locals. As racing continued through Sunday the track got choppy and vicious while the pace got faster. Terry sage took the overall. I was holding my own Saturday until I missed the gate for my third moto and started a half a lap behind. Nice Novice Move! The wake up call gave me a little boost and Sunday went better. We were both working very hard at this. The effort might be paying off. I was riding my 2002 CR250 2 stroke that I purchased in December of 2001. It only had about 20 hours on it and it was set up for motocross. After pulling it out of the barn, I replaced a rusty throttle cable and it was ready to go, almost. Luckily Travis “Tuner” of TBT Racing showed up at Arizona Cycle Park for the series opener and was able to fix my broken sub tank fitting. That Tuner shows up everywhere there is good racing. As a new Washington OTMX member I was required to wear orange ribbons on my helmet for my first couple of motos so the Club reps could watch me and assign me to the proper class. They put me in the 50 Novice class, just right! FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 22 We ran into Tiger Wingert, a previous Desert 100 class winner who lives in British Columbia. Tiger is racing the 50+ Master Class against some of the fastest old guys in the West. The battles are tense and high speed. It was good to hear his stories about the past Desert 100 races. Los Angeles OTMX, March 25, 26 & 27 is held at Competitive Edge MX in Hesperia, CA. They have both an outdoor Supercross track and an outdoor motocross track that winds through the Joshua trees. Many National events have been held at this location. The California racers have all of the latest bikes and toy haulers. The turnouts are big and those old surfers are serious about their racing. By Sunday afternoon the pace was super fast and the track was torn up and sketchy. The local fast guy in my class, after 4 moto wins, jumped off the track in moto 5 and dislocated his knee. That gave me my first weekend overall. Yah! Oh Yah! I really liked LA. Next stop, Las Vegas OTMX April 9 & 10 at Sandy Valley MX. Another fun track and racing in the Nevada sun. I was solo at this race, the same as LA, since the Voice was back in Washington working the Stumpjumpers Frostbite Hare Scramble, White Knuckle Hare Scramble and the 41st Annual Desert 100. I was looking forward to getting the Voice back for the next race and drive. At both the Los Angeles and the Las Vegas events they used transponders to score the racing. Lap times showed no doubt; I was picking up the pace. Pushing the pace faster gets a little edgy when no one is watching your back. have new local competition and it is now clear which riders are going for the series title in each Class. At the Vegas event I ran into Brian Swanson, a fireman from Olympia racing in my class. He reminded me that we use to bang bars back in 2000 at his Mudslinger Club races. The Mudslingers are some good old boys and ladies that put on some winter motocross races in the rain, wind, sleet and snow, even partially underwater. They even have their own Red Hook beer label. Both their beer and races are great if you ever get the chance. Honey Lake MX Park May 6, 7 & 8, the 35th annual Sierra OTMX event near Susanville, CA. Walking the track has my hair up again. This is the toughest track yet. 10’ – 12’ jump faces with blind landings and a difficult track to memorize. It has the steepest “WFO” hill climb that I have ever seen at a motocross track. At the top it immediately turns left into a death grip 30’ drop off slide and with an oh-shit right hand dogleg, and then into a 100’ wide open power downhill. Dangerous! Oh Boy! The Voice had his work cut out again in the Master Class. No matter how many times he passed Terry Sage in the tight technical part of the track, Terry’s stroked 450 Honda would make the pass on the power robbing up hill and take the overall for the weekend. The Voice can see the series points slipping. After my first moto the Voice says I am going the fastest he has ever seen me ride and the CR250 is on the pipe and barking among the 4 strokes. Leading the last lap of moto 2 I over jump a big table top and pancake flatland on hard pack. I held on avoiding a crash to fade back finishing the moto 6th. I “DNS” did not start the next 3 motos and the drive home was really, really long. Only two weeks go by and we are at Nirada MX Raceway at the Rocky Mountain OTMX event. We both I have not exactly bounced back since Honey Lake. The Voice is doing all of the loading and unloading, bike prep and starting my bike. He also has Mike Perry to deal with, who is on top of his game this weekend and takes the overall. The 60+ Master point’s battle is to close for comfort. I was able to limp through my motos and salvage points. We headed home with only 4 days before we head out again for the Washington race. Should I call it quits and cut and run? I had a few days to think about the pain. A couple of massages, ibuprofen, ice and 5 days later it is May 27, 28 & 29 at Extreme MX Park, Airway Heights, WA. It is a first class track and facility with more great weather. The 60 Master Class riders had epic battles in all 5 motos with Washington Club member Gary Chase taking the overall at his first race of the year. It is a mathematical puzzle trying to figure out the series points lead in the Master Class. Very close racing! My son Ash came to this event with a new YZ450 to break in AND TO START MY BIKE! Yep, 3 weeks and I still can’t kick it over. Not starting the bike did not slow me down to much and I limped away with all five motos and my second overall for the year. Seven rounds down. June 18 & 19, BCOTMX event at Kent Raceway, Agassiz, British Columbia. It has been one good track after another and we are all smiles walking the track. Friday around dusk the Northwest rain moves in and it was still laying it down at practice Saturday morning. By the 3rd round of motos the 12” deep mud was causing problems for many classes. The track crew was washing off the number plates with a fire hose to enable scoring at the finish line. All the NMA hare scramble mud bog experience was paying off for the Voice and I with top place finishes. Three 60+ Masters we have not seen before show up to support their friend and mix things up. They come from Colorado, California and Idaho. These new competitors along with the regular top competitors, Mike Perry, Terry Sage and Gary Chase gave the Voice a battle filled weekend. Tom took the overall for the weekend and mathematically locked up the Northwest Challenge and the International Championship. The rain never let up Saturday evening or night and the racing Sunday was canceled. That left both of us with overalls for the weekend and huge cleanup jobs on the bikes and hauling vehicles. For me, things were going great on the old CR250, then, in the second moto I didn’t have the power to pull the 4 strokes. Back at our pit hydrating in the shade the Voice noticed my spark plug was ready to fall out. It was hanging by 4 threads. I splurged and replaced the 10 year old plug and proceeded to clean house in the next three motos for the overall. I also locked up the 50 Novice Northwest Challenge and IOTMX International Championship at the Boise event. Washougal MX July 8, 9 & 10 two weeks before the AMA Outdoor National. The track is already reconfigured and setup for the National. Washougal brings the riders out of the woodwork and the Oregon OTMX Club gets the biggest turnout of the series. Walking the track in the 70 degree sunshine I can almost see the AMA Pros jumping the 80’ – 100’ downhill into the giant breaking bumps and skipping across the lethal woops. It definitely gets the adrenaline pumping. Do you know the feeling? My good friend the Voice has always had a core of quiet determination, but he was burning red hot for this event and was able to punish the three Masters that had previously taken overalls from him at this years series events. The Washougal overall gave him a slim points lead for the series. I had good racing all weekend, but I could not stay with the drift boat builder from Monroe. He pulled me up horsepower hill and through the woops. All I can say is that going up that horsepower hill for 5 motos can pull the tendons out of your forearms and shoulders. After Washougal the Voice and I have calculated series points and feel we can risk skipping the Calgary, Alberta event that is 3 hours north of Calgary and the Reno, Nevada event, passing on the 5,500 miles of driving and expense. With luck we would still be in the top point’s positions as we head to Boise in September. Kind of cutting it close, but after 16,000 miles of driving we are both getting worn like the tires on my pickup truck. I have a little more breathing room that the Voice due to my L.A. and Vegas races that he could not attend. Round 12, September 23, 24 & 25, Owyee MX Park, Boise, Idaho. We rolled into Boise ready to romp and stomp. Idaho’s 23rd Annual OTMX event was a big draw because the Club does an awesome job and quite a few of the class points battles were extremely close and still being worked out. This is another incredible track and it is only 5 minutes from downtown Boise. The temperatures are over 100 in the afternoon. Hydration and body temperature are critical. Racing is hardcore! FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 26 Mathematically no one could take the series points lead from either one of us. Now we would not have to travel to Glen Helen raceway or Carlsbad Raceway for the two final rounds 13 & 14. We were relieved and not going to miss another 5,000 miles of trailer towing on I-5. Tom’s 2007 YZ450 was the second oldest bike in his class. His modifications are few. Pirelli MidSoft MX tires, FMF Mega Bomb header and 4.1 silencer, RK O-ring chain and 50 tooth Sunstar sprocket, Applied Racing 22 degree off set Triple Clamp and a Scotts Off-road Skid Plate. At 240 hours it is still running all original engine parts and plastic. He is ready for a new fuel injected YZ450, but plans on keeping the 2007 for off-road use. My 02 CR250 rocks even though it was the oldest bike in the 50 Novice class. In 2003 Travis Gage of White Knuckle Grips sent the motor to Pro Circuit for trick motor work along with a Pro Circuit pipe and Shorty silencer. Other modifications included V-Force Reed cage, Hinson clutch, Sunstar sprockets, Regina Gold chain, Pirelli MidSoft tires, Cycra hand guards, ARC break-away levers, Pro-taper bars, Sunline shifter, White Knuckle grips, Daco blue coolant hoses, Unibiker Radiator guards/ braces, Utah Sport skid Plate, Factory effects gripper seat cover and Decal Works numbers. Suspension by Travis at TBT racing included a re-valve along with RG3 Triple Clamp and Enzo sub tanks. The Honda is going back into the barn for now. The Voice and I are talking about 2014 for out next IOTMX assault on the series. I will be in the 60+ Amateur Class then. Tom will remain in the 60+ Master Class since it is the top class for advancement. The Voice had set us up for a great year of retirement this time. That Tom Jesmer is a really great friend. But I think he is racing the 60 class this year in the Desert 100. Darn. I hope he doesn’t start racing every year. I have my eye on that class for 2014. My story started at the 2010 event. My son and I wanted to come over and do the race. When we rolled over the hill and saw Stumpjumperville we were a little overwhelmed to say the least. We opted out of the race for the Ironman Poker Run and had a great time. We walked to the top of the hill at the end of the bomb run and watched the start. After seeing the start we knew we had to come back for the 2011 event and we were racing it. We hung around and watched several hundred finishers cross the podium and get their shirt. That cinched it for us. As soon as we got home I told my wife to not even think of planning anything for the weekend of the 2011 event. The remainder of the riding season we’d compare what we were doing to the DEZ 100. Our whole existence was focused on THE race. January 2011 rolled around and people on Thumpertalk got each other geeked up by telling war stories and talking about the great time they had. That put things in motion. I knew I had to get my butt in shape. I hit the gym with passion. But we all know there is no conditioning like riding when training for a riding event. With all the snow we had in north Idaho we found ourselves trucking to Juniper for a couple weekends of riding. We even ran the whooped out death race at Horn Rapids in attempts to get ready for the big one. All my buddies that were going to go with us backed out and left it to my son and I. Heck with them, we’ve taken care of and looked out for each other before, we’ll do it again. So we got all pre-registered and started making a list and going through the bikes. A week in the shop with my son tinkering and replacing worn parts is irreplaceable and the bikes were loaded. The anticipation and excitement we shared was incredible and hardly containable. I think we started to get on the girls nerves a little because all we could talk about is the upcoming race. Friday morning couldn’t get here soon enough. When we dropped into Odessa I knew it was time and was beginning to wonder if I was really ready, physically and mentally. We got in and got settled, hung out for a couple days eating like kings and making sure there were plenty of fluids in our bodies. I don’t know how many trips we made through vendor row getting rid of nervous energy. FLATOUT • MARCH 31ST & APRIL 1ST, 2012 Sunday morning at about 4am I woke up and there was no getting back to sleep. I was wound tight and ready to go. I layed in bed till about 6 and couldn’t take it anymore so I got up, walked down to vendor row and got a big cup of coffee. Just what I needed, something to calm the jitters. I returned to camp to find a people stirring and decided to load the pickup and get it to the pits. Next came the riders meeting. WOW, talk about being intimidating for a first timer. The ride to the starting line was cool and gave me a minute to reflect on how big an event this was. We got lined up and when the cannon went off all of our plans to remain calm and ride smart went out the window. As soon as I was rolling it was all I could do to keep him in sight with that number of bikes and the amount of dust. My son picked great lines all day and we had one heck of a good first lap. He did have a couple of hard get offs that left him a little apprehensive. We came into the pits topped off with fuel, gulped a Gatorade and were off. With recharged batteries we picked up the pace and were picking off a few here and there. We got to the first road crossing and as I was pushing my bike across the road I looked down and saw I had a rear flat. My son being 14 I didn’t feel really comfortable sending him on his own through the remaining 40 plus miles of the race. He was riding hard and getting tired and I really didn’t want to make the call home that he was hauled off in a meat wagon or worse. I told him I had a flat and that we would have to make a run at it next year. (Note I have all the confidence a father could have in the sweep riders and the medical staff just a concerned father, especially after the first two dirt samples he took and seeing the bird land several times throughout the day). Through goggles and an inch of dust I could see the disappointment in his face. He was crushed. Not wanting to let him down I sucked it up and I said to hell with it. I told him to keep in mind I had a flat and was not going to be able to keep the pace we had been riding. Jr. picked a good pace and I kept with him for about 25 miles till the tire came off the rim. I flopped the bike on its side and began spooning the tire on with a crescent wrench and a screw driver. One of them gave me a set of spoons which did the trick and I zip tied the tire on best I could. They also gave me a bottle of water. Damn that was good. I got up and limped to the finish where found I was only two positions behind my son. When I saw him go up and over the podium a wall of emotions hit me. It was really cool that we were able to share the passion for this sport and it was truly a team effort for us getting ready for and to get through this race. All the prep work and riding getting ready for this was worth every second. Seeing the pride in his dusty muddy face when he held up that shirt was priceless. Once we got the bikes loaded and changed clothes we started the three hour trip home. I looked over at my exhausted kid and told him I would never be back. I got my damn t-shirt, which is an accomplishment in itself and I didn’t have anything to prove to anyone. He agreed. Few days later and lots of Ibuprophen and we’ve already started planning the trip for next year. I know I’m dragging the camper over next year, sleeping in the bike trailer is not all that relaxing. To top it off we both know we can finish better than we did. Now we have a taste for the race, know what to expect and are ready to do what it takes to finish better than this last race. TARLOW COURTESY REPRINT GRANTED BY DIRT RIDER MAGAZINE Trackside medicine is intended to provide a general medical guideline and is not intended to replace the clinical judgment of a doctor or take the place of a medical doctor’s diagnostic or treatment recommendations. We will always err on the conservative side for safety purposes. MOTOCROSS. I’ve been involved in just about every sport, and unfortunately, motocross ranks high as an injury-ridden sport. On any given day, you can see someone sprawled out on the track like a cheap yard sale. Stopping trackside and providing medical assistance to a downed rider is what any responsible rider would do. When I’ve taken a dirt sample, it’s nice to know that some guy cares enough to stop and check on me, even if it is just to tell me to get up and stop blocking the track. It would be great to be able to teach you advanced trauma life support or CPR protocol from trackside medicine, but with my writing skills and your limited reading time, it isn’t going to happen in this article. The real truth is we all should know CPR. Nothing can compare with the feeling of helping to save someone’s life. CPR online courses such as, www. firstaidweb.com can certify you for free and in less time than it takes to put on a new set of tires, with far less sweat and profanity. For the purpose of this article, we will assume that the downed rider is conscious, possibly alert, oriented and breathing. So what should we do when stopping to help a downed rider? First, always remember that you should never move the rider until his condition has been sufficiently assessed and always send for medical backup. We can all attest that after hitting the ground we are not always aware of our surroundings or all our injuries. Pain from one injury (broken wrist or ankle) can mask the severity of other more important injuries (spinal cord compromise). We must always assess other potentially serious injuries before focusing on the obvious or less serious injuries. Head, neck, back and chest injuries (breathing difficulty) are the first to evaluate once you have determined that CPR is not required. If the rider isn’t alert, determine whether he is having difficulty breathing. If he is, implement CPR training. If the rider is alert, ask him if he is having any problems breathing. If not, obtain the rider’s full name and whom he’s with; make sure to remember this information in case he passes out. KTM HAS NOW SWEPT EVERY MAJOR OFFOFF OFF-ROAD -ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN THE 2011 SEASON! GNCC XC1 CHAMPION Factory FMF/KTM rider Charlie Mullins made history when he clinched his first pro career GNCC XC1 Championship at the famous Loretta Lynn’s MX Park after taking the race win in the final race of the series. Not only was it Mullins’ first career XC1 championship, but he is the first KTM American rider to win the XC1 title since Scott Plessinger earned the title in 1995. “I can’t explain how much this championship means to me,” remarked Mullins. “This is the championship I have worked for since I was a kid. This is the reason I ride and the reason I train. It feels so good to finally win this title.” SPONSORING LUNCH AT THE ROCKY COULEE BREWERY FOR THE FIRST 100 DUAL SPORTERS TO REGISTER FOR THE POKER RUN OF GRESHAM “Dirt Bike Headquarters” Since 1977 503.667.3970 www.ktmnorthwest.com Husqvarna is proud to support the StumpJumpers Desert 100 with contingency in ALL CLASSES! 1st Place - $200 2nd Place - $150 3rd Place - $75 4th Place - $50 5th Place - $25 ©2012 Husqvarna Motorcycles NA, LLC EARN MORE WHEN YOU RiDE MORE There are 60-pages of new Huskys and accessories on display in the RiDE MORE 2012 catalog.
