John Adams Middle School – 2425 16th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405 Vol. 1 Issue 3 December 8, 2005 MOOMBA: Making This World A Better Place My Only Obstacle Must Be Attitude th The 4 annual MOOMBA assembly at John Adams Middle School was held Thursday, November 17th. The focus of the assembly is to see how people can make a positive difference. This year, our focus is on the water crisis. Teenagers and kids suffer from not having enough quality food and water to survive. A large percentage of people don’t have clean water and that causes the life span to be really short. Global Trust is working with our school to make a difference to raise funds to install clean water for small communities around the world. The goal is to make a positive difference for kids around the world. The assembly began with a short introduction from the Principle for a Day winner, Ryan McGuire, then a song by the Norseman Choir. Then the Chairman of the H to O company (Hope 2 Others), Rob Kramer introduced himself and talked about the troubles of water in third world countries, where many people struggle to survive with almost no access to clean water. People suffer from diseases due to water infected with diseases and many have died. He showed a video on the situation that n Bangladesh. The video itself is the proof of all the troubles the people live with everyday. People suffer and die from either disease-carrying water or no water at all. In fact, every three seconds a child dies of a water-related illness. Students were introduced to a plan that can save thousands of lives. We pan to sell cases of water and all profits made will go directly to those who need water. The money can be used to build things that can help gather water for them. Prizes will be given to topsellers. After, the Norsemen Choir sang another few inspirational songs as the assembly come to an end. An Interview with Global Water Trust President Tom, the Global Water Trust company president has been to Bangladesh, Napal, Thailand, and is on his way to Africa. Africa and Asia are the two continents where the most deaths occurred from having no clean water. There are three main symptoms from having no clean wate; fever, diarrhea, and cancer. 4,500 children die every day from having no clean water. Tom shared that the filters that we bring to these schools benefit 8,000 school children. John Adams Middle School is the first school in California that Global Water Trust has come to and we can make a difference. To make a positive difference, you can use less water, be involved in the Quench Program, sell water, and fund safe water programs. The Trojans clearly dominated the Briuns in this long standing rivalry. Many of our staff is from UCLA USC or USC which is good for UCLA split opinions. There are many teachers who attended USC and UCLA at JAMS. Ms. Hale has her USC shirt and Ms. Ramos wears her UCLA shirt to show their school spirit and pride. When Ms. Hale and Ms. Ramos met each other in the hall and went at it! AVID By Kelly Merino We got a chance to talk with Ms. Lang, the Chairwoman of JAMS AVID. What` s the purpose of AVID? It` s a program for kids to help them prepare for college. It targets underrepresented students and students who have potential to get good grades and potential to perform in the middle. What do you do in AVID? Half the time is spent is collaborations where students help each other to solve problems by using high-level questioning. The other half is spent working on activities to improve student’s study skills such as Cornell notes and Socratic Seminars and other academic activities. We also do activities that help improve and other self- esteem that will help us in and outside of school. We also have fun. What does AVID stand for? Advancement Via Individual Determination. We also got to ask Liliana for her thoughts on AVID. “It` s fun and exciting, but can be difficult at times. Cornell notes can be difficult, but the rest is ok. Grade Alert! The end of the second grading period will be in January! The year is almost half way done! Ciobha Scott Conducts the UCLA Wind Ensemble Ciobha Scott won the essay contest sponsored by UCLA’s instrumental music department. Because of her incredible essay, she was selected to be the guest conductor at the Winter Concert where she conducted the UCLA Wind Ensemble performance of Stars and Stripes Forever. Ms. Woo and John Adams are very proud of her. This is a program that brings professionals together from different parts of the world. Rather than having just the diplomats talk where there might be hidden agendas, they send doctors, lawyers, and teachers to talk to their counterparts across the world. Ms. Kovaric is going to be involved in 30 hours of conferences talking with other educators in China. She is very anxious to ask what they think she should teach her students about China. She is fearing the cold but thinks she will have a great time. She is sorry to leave her students but is sure that when she returns, the presentations to all of the 7th graders will make up for the lost time. She will have a presentation of her adventures when she returns. We wish her a safe trip and know that she will represent our school well. Ms. Saad Moves Into Front Office Caroline Saad is our new attendance employee here at Jams and a local gal. Do you like your new job so far? It’s a lot to learn, but yes, I’m loving it. Where did you work before? I have always worked at JAMS. Before I was in room 90 as an instructional assistant. What schools did you attend to before you started working? I started at Lincon, then SAMO, and finally SMC. Do you like it here in Santa Monica? There is no other place to be, other than Hawaii. Santa Monica is my home and JAMS is my extended family!!!!!!!!!! New Face at JAMS By Helen Davidson Ms. Jenuwine is a sixth grade science teacher here at Jams. How is your first time here so far? Its going by really fast. Do you like the other teachers? Yes I like the other teachers and I love my team, they are friendly and supportive. How many years have you been teaching? This is my fourth year teaching. What was your favorite subject in 6th grade? Math was my favorite subject in 6th grade. Do you learn new things by teaching? Yes, I learn things from the kids every day. What other schools have you taught at? Every year, Ms. Dipley sponsors the annual Turkey Trot. Every year we have seen the number of students participating in the event growing and it has been another successful year. Ms. Ramos, Ms. Monahan, and Ms. Gonzalez won the event after training for three years to recover from their 3rd place finish in 2002. “Ms. Ramos, Ms. Gonzalez and I were so devastated from our 3rd place finish, we decided to train at altitude to ensure that we would come back with a victory,” comments Ms. Monahan. Ms. Dipley disqualified the 1st place team because they did not register during the sign-up period. Ms. Ramos promises that “We will be Back!.” Thanksgiving was a great time to spend time with your family and give thanks to all the wonderful things you have. I hope everyone ate lots of turkey and pie over our four-day weekend break. Ya! “The Turkey trot was fun!” Ms. Ramos is appealing the decision to disqualify the championship team of Monahan, Ramos, and Gonzalez to the Turkey Authorities. AND THE WINNERS ARE… Amy Valdez Kalaria Obasi Tessa Walters Whatever their decision, we will be back next year!” 3 Veterans Day Tapping Into Fresh Water By Ana Frandell All humans share basic needs essential for survival; food, shelter and water… Water: we all drink it, take showers with it daily, flush the toilet with it, wash our clothes with it, wash our cars with it, play in it, fill a Jacuzzi with it, and even create theme parks based on it. Here in the United State we take our abundance of water for granted. For the people that live in 3rd world countries, especially Saharan Africa access to clean water is a luxury. In most of the villages in Africa, women must walk 4 to 6 hours to retrieve the day’s supply of potable water for their households. Just imagine carrying a huge pot of water on your head, while walking from Santa Monica to downtown L.A. every day. Due to rapid growth population, poverty, pollution and lack of access to wells, which can pump up ground water, the goal of fresh clean water for all seems to be unattainable particularly in developing countries like Africa. In many poor villages people have to rely on the water that is easiest to reach through shallow ground water wells, usually less than 10ft deep or mud wholes used by both animals and humans. Even when there is a stream or river near by these water sources are frequently polluted with animal and human waste. These poor villages lack the technology that is available to help them create a more efficient pumping system. Water shortage is not posing a problem in Africa alone the problem is spreading worldwide. It is very clear that everyone needs clean water to survive. Ninety-nine percent of Earth's water is salty, frozen, or buried deep underground. Also adequate rainfall is not distributed equally throughout the world. Soon countries will be fighting wars over this resource, unless everyone gets involved now! The human thirst for water is even more important than our hunger for food. People can survive several weeks without food, but will die in just a few days without water. The human body, after all, is more than 75 percent water. The kids in John Adams can get involved and help this worldwide problem. Remember to conserve water at home and at school. By Alex Berry Arlington West (a program created from Veterans for Peace, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to rid the U.S. of war) has been putting crosses up on the beach right next to the pier for quite a while now, showing us all the people who gave their lives away for this useless war. You might have seen this memorial set up with white, and sometimes red or blue, crosses all along the beach. People have "assigned" some of these crosses with real people that have died, leaving flowers, or just paper messages, and treating each cross with deep respect. On Saturday (the day after Veterans day) this program had carried at least 50 or so coffin-sized boxes in a huge circle that ran all the way up the street, through the park, through the promanade, and back to the beach. My father, my brother Eamon, and I had helped make and carry a "coffin" draped with a big american flag. With 4 people per coffin and about 50 or 60 coffins, I'd say that this silent protest was quite a success. With real veterans from real wars being there, I could only feel a powerful respect and pity for the soldiers that have wasted their lives in this war. 8th Graders View by Maya Zelcer Hi, my name is Maya and I am in 8th grade. I am writing this article to let the 6th and 7th graders know that you need to be ready for 8th grade. If school has been easy for you and you think that 8th grade is going to be the same, you are in for a surprise. You need to be ready for a school until now that school is really easy but 8th grade is a time when your future education is beginning. I have some really good teachers this year and all of my classes are really challenging. It is good to pay attention in your classes now, because in 8th grade, the teachers will extend the subjects to a higher level. If you do not know the things you are learning in 6th and 7th grade, it is going to be really hard to do what is expected of you in 8th grade. Although, 8th grade can be hard, it is one of the best years in middle school. You will know so many students and by the time you complete 8th grade, you will know everyone’s name. I know that I am saying that 8th grade is really hard but you have a whole year to learn the subjects like U.S. History, Algebra, Language Arts, and Science. This whole year is pretty much getting you ready for high school. I have had one of the best experiences at JAMS and have met such wonderful people. I am going to be sad that years at JAMS are ending, but I have to remember that the end is just the beginning. Lego Robotics Club By Richard Gorb The Lego Competition is back this year. Lego Robotics is a club that lets a team of students build and test their Lego robots using a RCX unit to perform difficult tasks. This year the John Adams team (A.K.A: Team Revolution Halo) has made it all the way to the state finals which will be held on December 3, 2005 in Legoland. The team members are Ryder Liu, Steven Luis, David Teetz, Matt France, Michael Sarfati, Alfredo Rodriguez, Kayla Roy, Ben Sassoon, and myself Richard Gorb. I interviewed Ms. Cady who is the founder of the Lego club at this school and Pat Eastman who is the coach of the Lego team about how they felt about the club. How long has the Lego club been at this school? Ms. Cady: ‘Three years.” Why did you start the club? Ms. Cady: “I wanted to know that we had some technology in our seminars.” How do you feel about this year’s team? Ms. Cady: “I fell that the team will come together and be successful.” Why did you want to become the coach of Lego Robotics club? Ms. Eastman: “Because I thought it would be a challenge and it would be fun.” What do you think our chances are of winning the state finals? Ms. Eastman: “I think if everything goes according to plan, we have a good chance.” If we win the state finals; what will you do next? Ms. Eastman: “Move on to coaching at SAMO.” 4 Walk Out of School 11-2-05!! Drive Out the Bush Regime! By Alex Barry November 2.... the anniversary of George W. Bush’s reelection into office and people demonstrate that have had enough. Nationwide, people had organized school/ work walkouts, and though not quite as successful as we would have hoped, John Adams Middle School also tried to take part in this loud protest. Although Samohi had literally hundreds of kids taking part, a good 20 or so kids from JAMS were proudly showing off their intolerance with big signs saying “JAMS STUDENTS AGAINST THE WAR” on Wilshire Blvd. (at the edge of the 3rd St. Promanade). At 12 noon, kids from schools all over the country tried to walk right out of school. Even though Ms.Ramos did what she had to do and keep us back, enough of us got out and when they announced that John Adams Middle School had gone to help, it made a statement which made people think. Samohi however had hundreds of kids, the walked out of school, through the mall, and to Wilshire Blvd. in a huge crowd screaming their heads off. At about 3:00 the protest was over, but people were encouraged to come to the federal building at 5:00, where there were even more people! The second protest however, was not as fun. It didn’t have as much energy as the kids that risked trouble to make something heard. The thing that I kept thinking about was the fact that kids can have political opinion, and even though we might not be able to explain it clearly, we do want to be heard. We can’t vote of course, but we want to still have input and not be shutdown by the adults. Make yourself politically aware! Get your voices heard! Students from JAMS and Samohi protesting on Wilshire Don’t loose your I identity to eating disorders By: Joana Martin In the United States alone, about 7 million females and 1 million males suffer from eating disorders, with anorexia (forced starvation) and bulimia (food binging and purging) being the two most common. At their most extreme forms, disorders can lead to serious health and psychological problems, and even death. There is a lot of pressure to be thin and we see in magazines and movies that being thin is O.K. but there is a danger in trying to get think at the expense of your health. There are many places you can go to talk to someone if you are struggling with an eating disorder or you have a friend who is. At school, see your counselor. What you share with your counselor is confidential, unless your health is in danger. So, stop by and see your counselor and get help. * go to http://www.worldcantwait.net/ to learn more A Death in the Family: Coping with Your Loss It's never easy when someone in your family must leave. But remember that loved ones will remain forever in your heart long after they are gone. Everyone deals with grief differently and everyone needs a different amount of time to get better. Some people remember loved ones through looking at photos, talking about them or by writing about them. However you choose to grieve is up to you. You will never stop missing your mom or your brother or your grandma, but the pain that you feel at first will ease with time. We have counselors at school to help us deal with our loss. If you would like more information, please see your school counselor. 2005 Quik Science Team Seeking Back to Back Chanpionship Left to Right: Steven Gordon, Nicholas Salazar, Tessa Walther, Dylan Braun, Jivanto van Hemert, Eric Staugard, Ms. Steinmetz Will this year’s team go Back-to-Back with last year’s first place finishing team? They are definitely on their way. This year’s team is off to an early start. Most teams were just selected this week at other schools while the JAMS team was selected the third week of September. The team is working twice a week to develop their project to teach 5th graders on how to take care of the earth through science. Friends Good Luck Team! Go, TEAM, Go Good friends can be a great way to help you get through some tough times. A good way to help you deal with problems is to reach out to your friends. A good friend will support you and be there for you when you are missing someone you care about. Friends will listen and not judge you. Keep yor friends close and your enimes far. 5 Dollar Night was Fun Student Leadership sponsored an activity night for 6th graders on Friday, December 2nd called the iPod dance. Students had a great time and enjoyed the music but some said they would rather have a dance with a D.J. Catalina By Helen Davidson There is nothing better then skipping school and spending time in Catalina to learn about the ocean. JAMS 6th grade students could sign up for this Science Magnet seminar spent their weekend in the Catalina Island Marine Institute. On the island we learned about sea life and also land life. In the morning we would eat breakfast and then do activities that would last 2 or 3 hours and then have lunch. After every meal we got an hour of free time to socialize or work in our log books. Every 6th grader went snorkeling and did labs. When we went snorkeling we saw fish such as Garabaldies and we saw massive kelp forests. In labs we would learn about ocean life and we got to pet sharks and sting rays. Catalina was so much fun and we will never forget our experiences. Riddle of the Month Win Cash! $ THE MISSING DOLLAR RIDDLE $ Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Book reviews By Nicholas Bugliarelli Artimis Fowl The boy genius is back and Reverting back to old ways having Forgotten about the fairy world. What he doesn’t know is that his old nemesis Opal Kobi has broken out of Jail and is planning to take her Revenge on Artimis. Can they stop Her before it’s too late? You’ll laugh yourself silly in this hilariously clever fantasy book. Eldest In eldest, the sequel to Eragon, Eragon and Saphira need to complete there training in the Elvin forest of du weldevarden. But trouble is coming up on the horizon when news comes up of king Galabitorixs army massing for an attack on the varden in surda. This is a novel worthy of its big brother Eragon and that’s saying a lot! I guarantee you’ll love this book. ` Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince In the sixth novel of the series Voldemort has just come out into the open and the wizarding world is in chaos. Harry Potter is also entering his sixth year at Hogwarts at the age of sixteen. Draco Malfoy is acting very strangely and Harry suspects he m might be a death eater. There’s also a surprise twist at the end that you don’t want to miss! A boys named Eragon life’s turned upside down when he finds a polished blue stone in the mountain range of the spine that turns out to be a dragon egg! But suddenly after the dragon hatches two mysterious cloaked figures appear and murder his uncle. To gather he and the dragon that he has named Saphira set out to kill the cloaked figures and to avenge his uncles death. This is thrilling book full of mystery and magic. Videogame Review By E-cliptoe Welcome to the first ever videogame review of the year at JAMS. I’m the reviewer for all things that come close to videogames. Throughout the year I’ll be coming out with reviews for videogames, hardware for them, and if necessary the console. For the first review I’ll be doing it on the new release of Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (Playstation 2) Movie Reviews “SITH STRIKES BACK, ONTO OUR SHELVES!!!!” By Connor Davidson The release of the Revenge of the Sith DVD has put 280 million dollars in George Lucas’s pocket. But does the DVD live up to the hype? Yes and no. The DVD has hours of extras that are amazing and the movie has different plot elements that give it the Zing movie watchers love. The Storyline lives up to its former standards. But it is the same old thing a war is going on, good guys are tempted by the darkness, and everybody wears signature black gloves. The only thing that separates this movie from the others is the very wide range of special effects. I would say buy it if you are a star wars fan, if not then I would suggest to pick up a different movie. Keep the mad love for the movies. Zorro 2 By Jose Graciano Zorro 2 is the story of what happens to Zorro after he gets married. The story takes place in the year that California officially becomes part of the United States. Zorro’s wife becomes a spy because someone wants to stop California from joining the United States. Everyone knows this except Zorro who makes a fool of himself trying to win back his wife. He gets thrown into jail by the people his wife works for all the while, his son is looking for him. If you are looking for a movie that has a lot of action, I recommend this movie. My brothers and I really enjoyed it. Norseman News Eragon 7 When I first bought this game I thought that it would suck just like the first one did but it didn’t suck at all. Instead it was great; I couldn’t stop playing it until it was time to go to bed. I think that the reason this game is better is because you can play as a Jedi this time but in the first one you could only play as a clone trooper. Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a trooper but only a Jedi has a lightsaber. But if you’re into that U.S army deal then pick a clone because they have lots of weapons at there will. All in all I’d give this game on the E-cliptoe scale a 9 out of 10. ________________________ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 (9) 10 7th grade Trip to Yosemite Thursday 11-30-05 at 7:00 in the Auditorium Ms. Cady showed all the seventh grades how to be prepared for Yosemite. Staying warm is the most important thing! And of course staying hydrated. Most of the seventh graders will be up in Yosemite for the last week in January. I hear there is 4ft of snow in crane flat! Man you’re in for a great treat. Have fun! Holidays October Students of the Month By: Ana Frandell Everybody, guess what! Winter vacation is coming up. It starts on December 18 through January 1. I bet, this will be a fun, relaxing time to spend with your family. There will be many religious Holidays during this time. Well New Year is just around the corner. The ball will drop in New York on January 1 at 12:00 in the morning. Hopefully everyone will have a fun time on vacation and will be ready to come back to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.
