As a member, contributor and friend, you are truly the reason why Crealdé is one of the most vital Central Florida arts organizations today. I hope that you will visit our campuses often in the coming year and witness firsthand the creative work that is in progress every day. Due to the loyal support of our students and members, area philanthropic foundations and dedicated local governments, we have been able to achieve incredible things during these difficult economic times. Despite shrinking budgets and a reduced staff, we have stayed committed to a high level of service at our main campus and at our outreach sites. Please let me invite you, along with my staff and Board of Directors, to celebrate our most recent achievements and reaffirm what our community-based nonprofit organization stands for: • Founded in 1975 as a visual arts center with a broad mission to foster the development of artists and to utilize the arts as a vehicle to build a better community. • Features a curriculum of over 100 visual arts courses and workshops in photography, painting and drawing, ceramics and sculpture to students of all backgrounds, taught by a professional faculty of over 40 artists. • Provides tuition-based and free outreach classes in several locations, including our beautifully renovated 40-year-old campus in Winter Park, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden, the John Bridges Community Center in Apopka and the Maxey Center in Winter Garden. • In its seventh year, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center has become a model for community engagement and cultural preservation, and has been visited by educational, civic and economic development groups from across the country. • Hosts 12 annual visiting exhibitions in three galleries, an outdoor sculpture garden, public art installations and a permanent collection of photographs and oral histories, as well as several special events that delight and educate visitors and the local community while supporting emerging and established artists. • Out of a commitment to actualizing the ideal that the arts are for everyone, and that every individual and community has a story worth telling, the school provides extensive community outreach and scholarship programs to economically disadvantaged individuals and communities throughout Central Florida. • Offers unparalleled opportunities for emerging artists to be mentored by professional artists and work in a studio environment. 2 Executive Director’s Progress Report Highlights of our 2013 achievements include: • Crealdé’s income in 2013 has surpassed pre-recession levels in all areas, including tuition, membership, fundraising and grants. • The success of the two free community events, improved online marketing efforts and registration capability have positively contributed to a 2013 tuition income of over $550,000. • Enrollment at our Winter Garden satellite site has increased by 22% during the third year of operation at the Jessie Brock Community Center. “I have witnessed incredible growth brought about by the unwavering missiondriven leadership of our Executive Director, Peter Schreyer, working together with our Board of Directors and a dedicated small staff. From its beautiful campus in Winter Park, the organization has spread its influence to serve students of all ages and backgrounds from a multicounty area and serves visitors from throughout the United States and abroad.” —Cecilia Bonifay, President of Crealdé Board of Directors and Senior Partner at Akerman LLP • Major improvements at our main campus in Winter Park have included the establishment of a made-in-Florida gift shop that exclusively sells the work of Crealdé artists, the complete renovation of the Photographic Darkroom and a significant upgrade of the jewelry-making studio. • In its seventh full year of operation, Crealdé’s most substantial outreach effort, the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, served 10,091 local students and visitors from throughout the U.S., with funding provided by an Orange County Cultural Tourism Development grant and the City of Winter Park’s Community Redevelopment Agency. Thank you for your ongoing support of Crealdé School of Art, and for believing that the arts make a difference to the quality of our communities, families and individual lives. Our founder, Bill Jenkins, would be proud to see us all pull together to sustain the mission of the organization he launched in 1975. As Crealdé enters its 40th anniversary year with a series of special events and high-profile exhibitions and ongoing community service, I am confident that it will continue to excel, thereby ensuring its sustainability and its many contributions to life in Central Florida! With kind regards, Peter Schreyer, Executive Director 3 School History C realdé Arts Inc. was founded in 1975 by William Jenkins to promote local artists by providing studio and gallery space. With profits earned from sales and rentals, Jenkins established ArtReach to provide art experiences to seniors and disabled individuals. By 1978, Crealdé evolved into a teaching center and became a 501(c)(3) organization. In the 1980s, three artistic departments were established, and the curriculum was expanded. A fine arts gallery was established in 1980, and in 1996 the gallery was named after Crealdé’s founder and his wife. Throughout the 1990s, Crealdé expanded on its mission, established a scholarship fund, launched the new Emerging Artist Program and deepened its commitment to make the arts available to the widest segment of the population. “I just wanted to thank you for the weekday open studio life drawing opportunities. ... It’s fantastic to see the artistic growth and community-building these sessions allow. ... I cannot think of a better way for a serious school of art to support its community of artists.” —Eileen Middleton, Crealdé student By the late 1990s, Crealdé had established three permanent outreach sites to conduct free classes for children, teens and seniors in underserved communities. In addition, over 20 collaborative public-art projects—murals, sculptures and photo-documentaries—have been conducted through partnerships with other nonprofit organizations including Boys & Girls Club and the Farmworker Association, and funded by many private foundations. Crealdé’s free galleries host artists from throughout the United States and the world to exhibit, present lectures and conduct workshops for the community. In 1999-2000, Crealdé undertook an aggressive capital campaign to construct its first building addition in over 20 years. Nearly $200,000 was raised including a matching Cultural Facilities Grant from the State of Florida. The 3,000-square-foot expansion features a second painting studio, the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery and lecture space, and a covered porch overlooking beautiful Lake Sterling. In keeping with Crealdé’s mission to provide outreach, foster cultural diversity and preservation of our cultural heritage, Crealdé deepened its long-standing relationship with the City of Winter Park in 2007 by opening the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, which stands as a tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community. The facility serves as a home for The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park. In partnership with academic institutions and other nonprofit organizations, the center also presents exhibitions and programs that focus on local history, cultural preservation, AfricanAmerican experience and Southern folklore. The center has two Painting of Crealdé campus and tower by M.J. Gandee. 4 School History “The Winter Park business community is integral to our history and to our sense of place and community. ... My vision is that, 50 years from now, our organization will have a ready-made exhibition of preserved and archived images from the 2013 business community. ... Crealde’s executive director Peter Schreyer is a wonderful project developer and leader. His projects are the very best quality, and we are thrilled with our collaboration with Crealdé School of Art on the ‘Business as Community Life: Winter Park 2013’ project.” — Susan Skolfield, Executive Director, Winter Park History Museum classroom spaces and a digital classroom, which expanded Crealdé’s capacity to serve its students. With the addition of this new venue, Crealdé’s budget reached the million dollar mark for the first time. Out of the desire to increase its participation in the economic vitality of the community, Crealdé secured its first Tourism Development grant from Orange County Government in 2007, which has continued, together with the City of Winter Park Redevelopment Agency, to be one of Crealdé’s largest funders. In 2010 Crealdé completed its second campus renovation, totaling $220,000, funded this time by an Orange County Cultural Facilities Grant and matched by contributions from an enthusiastic Crealdé membership. The renovation included the reroofing of three studio buildings, installation of green air conditioning units for the galleries and office, painting and wall repair of the entire facility and restoration of brick walkways. The creation of a new front campus entrance, complete with landscaping and a stunning mosaic mural, leads into the Contemporary Sculpture Garden, which has been updated with an educational walking tour and a beautiful mosaic mural dedicated during Crealdé ‘s 35th anniversary in the spring of 2010. In the same year, Crealdé also entered Decorated with festive luminarias, the Heritage Center welcomes visitors to one of its many free community events; photograph by Rick Lang a new government partnership with the City of Winter Garden, enabling us to offer a limited number of tuition-driven classes at the new Jessie Brock Community Center, strategically located near several growing West Orange and Lake County communities. A core part of this organization's belief and mission is that the arts are for everyone; every individual has a story worth telling and something creative to contribute, making a positive impact on their peers, family and the entire community. Crealdé School of Art remains committed to offering stimulating, educational, hands-on arts experiences and gallery exhibitions to Central Florida’s diverse population. 5 Mission Statements Mission Statement for Crealdé School of Art Crealdé’s mission is to stimulate the creative process inherent in each individual through hands-on education in the visual arts and to cultivate a lifelong aesthetic appreciation. These services are based on three core program components: Educational Curriculum, Galleries and Lecture Series, and our award-winning Outreach Programs. Crealdé’s Arts Education Tuition-based Curriculum consists of over 100 different classes and workshops for adults and children offered in the following formats: • Five 8-week seasonal sessions for adults and five 6-week sessions for children with two-week breaks in between. • A total of over two dozen weekend workshops led by Crealdé’s talented faculty, ranging from landscape painting and drawing, sculptural welding, adult/child ceramics projects to wedding photography. • A series of Visiting Artist workshops, often in conjunction with current exhibitions. Through its diverse programming, Crealdé interprets its mission to make visual arts an integral part of community life in Central Florida. This is made possible by offering hands-on art education, exposure to quality exhibitions and lectures and the opportunity to work in studios staffed by professional artists. Every year thousands of individuals of all ages and backgrounds participate in Crealdé studio classes and related programs. The following synopses provide an overview to each department’s educational programming. Painting and Drawing Crealdé’s largest department employs over 20 arts educators and offers a comprehensive curriculum of over 30 classes, including oil, acrylic, printmaking, collage, mixed media, watercolor, abstract, portrait, figure, and plein air painting. In addition to introductory and intermediate courses, Crealdé also offers advanced classes for serious art students, such as life drawing, abstract painting and portrait painting. Figure drawing workshops are held every Friday and Sunday. These two painting studios are offered throughout the year and have included special topics such as still life painting, mixed media collage and portrait painting with nationally and internationally recognized artists. Photography Crealdé’s Photography Department offers over 20 classes designed for amateurs as well as serious students of photography and working fine art photographers who wish to enhance their technical and aesthetic skills. The Photography Department offers instruction in conventional film and digital photography, including basic concepts and techniques, landscape, still life, architecture, portrait and documentary. We have a completely renovated professional darkroom facility, with 10 work stations and a separate film-processsing area. The department also features two classrooms dedicated to digital photography, including state-of-the-art computer stations 8 Program Curriculum “My 9-year-old has been attending Saturday sessions for several months and she has really blossomed. Third grade has been rough, with so much emphasis being placed on the “measurable” skills of math and spelling. ... Crealdé has been a saving grace for her. No matter how hard the week has been at school, she knows that she will have an entire hour every Saturday to be herself, to be measured only by her own level of satisfaction with her work.” — Sara Yates, mother of Winter Garden student for students to use. Weekly three-hour camera clinics, created to attract large numbers of new students, are offered in partnership with the area’s largest photographic supply store, Colonial Photo & Hobby. Ceramics and Sculpture The curriculum features instruction in various media and subjects, such as figurative and abstract sculpture, bronze casting, coppersmithing, and functional ceramics including wheelthrowing and handbuilding. The facility includes gas, raku and electric kilns, as well as a professional bronze foundry in a separate building. The program has a liberal open studio policy, enabling students to work independently. The department also offers beginning and intermediate classes in stained glass, fabric painting and textile design. Visiting Artist Workshops have included coppersmithing and welding to create steel sculpture, and glass fusing. A series of weekend workshops in welding and bronze casting produced collaborative pieces of art permanently displayed in our sculpture garden. Young Artist Program This program serves children and teens ages four to 17 in over 20 classes in all above media on Saturday and after school throughout the year. The Young Artist Program represents roughly 20% of Crealdé’s total enrollment. The program also features ArtCamp, Central Florida’s original summer art camp. Established in 1982, it provides 350 children the opportunity to participate in a one- or two-week Instructor Sherri Bunye with budding photographers in the darkroom series of all-day art workshops. It concludes with an ArtCamp Exhibition, featuring one completed project from each young artist displayed in the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery on Crealdé’s campus. Business and Personal Development for Artists Crealdé assists artists in the development of their work with courses designed for artists with varied backgrounds in artistic and professional accomplishment. Topics include grant writing, business planning and operations, marketing, how to secure gallery exhibitions and representation. Since 2000, Executive Director Peter Schreyer has held an annual free grant writing workshop for individual artists, which has resulted in dozens of successful grant applications by workshop attendees. 9 Hannibal Square Heritage Center “Winter Park Institute at Rollins College has been proud to collaborate with the Hannibal Square Heritage Center on several occasions over the past few years. Joint events have served to promote the shared values of responsible leadership and good citizenship both in our local area and as this concept expands to the greater global community.” —Gail D. Sinclair, Executive Director, Winter Park Institute at Rollins College I n partnership with the community and the City of Winter Park, Crealdé School of Art operates the Hannibal Square Heritage Center as a tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s AfricanAmerican community. Through innovative programming in the arts and humanities, the Heritage Center is a neighborhood focal point, archive and home to The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park. Through visiting exhibitions, community-based public art exhibitions and diverse educational programs, the center inspires all Central Floridians and visitors to our area to become more aware of, respect, explore and participate in their own community’s history and heritage. The Heritage Center hosts regular tuition-based classes, including digital photography coursework, but primarily exists as a service to the greater community and an outreach center for youth and senior classes as listed above and for other community arts-based services as follows: The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park Crealdé’s most extensive outreach project is an on-going communitybased project celebrating the heritage, character and contributions made by Winter Park’s African-American community. During annual Community Heritage Days, the Crealdé team of historians, cultural anthropologists and documentary photographers collaborate with intergenerational members of the historic Hannibal Square neighborhood to collect historically illustrative personal photographs and corresponding oral histories to tell the story of the community. This project is modeled after similar efforts conducted by the Los Angeles County Library and represents the first collection of its kind implemented in a Central Florida community. Completed phases from this on-going project have been dedicated annually during the City of Winter Park’s Martin Luther King Day Unity Heritage Festival. Originally on display at the Winter Park Community Center, the Heritage Collection became the cornerstone and impetus for building the new Hannibal Square Heritage Center. In 2012, The Sage Project: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories was added to the permanent collection of the center. The 18 contemporary portraits and oral histories captured the recollection of a special group of residents, ages 85 to 106, and represented Crealdé’s tribute to the City of Winter Park’s 125th anniversary. “What Heritage Means to Me” Field Trip Program This program, with curriculum for teachers designed by Heritage Center staff, offers groups of up to 25 fourth to eighth graders an interactive tour and discussion of the Heritage Collection and the Visiting Exhibition led by a community historian, followed by a visual art workshop where students create a piece of folk art incorporating their personal experience of tradition, heritage, family, community and country. A total of 300 children and their chaperones were served from public and private school as well as church and civic groups by year end. 10 Hannibal Square Heritage Center Hannibal Square Community Workshops with Visiting Artists Select artists exhibiting in the Heritage Center Visiting Exhibition Series provide free community workshops. Past artists include the Smithsoniancollected Ruby C. Williams and Mr. Imagination, Missionary Mary Proctor, sacred arts folk artist Linda Schäpper and quiltmaker Lauren Austin. In addition to creating personal works of art relating to family and heritage, participants collaborate with the visiting artist to create a public art piece for the Heritage Center’s permanent collection. Every April, the Heritage Center hosts the Hannibal Square Folk & Urban Art Festival, a daylong celebration of the roots of folk art, featuring Florida folk artists, including some of the Florida Highwayman artists; a free children’s workshop titled “KidFolk,” and booths representing the center’s many supportive community and business partners. Mrs.James is shown visiting Ward Chapel, the church she grew up in the Winter Park neighborhood of Hannibal Square. 11 Galleries & Lecture Series C realdé serves its mission to make the arts inspiring, engaging and accessible by providing the community with free exhibitions featuring visiting and local artists who often provide educational lectures and workshops together with their exhibitions. The Alice & William Jenkins Gallery Formally opened in 1980, the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery mission is to exhibit the work of noted and established Florida artists, as well as to introduce national and international artists to Central Florida. Each of the four to six annual exhibitions are professionally curated by a member of the Crealdé Gallery Committee or a guest curator. The Gallery Committee produced a year of quality exhibitions in 2013 including Micro/Macro: An Installation of Sculpture by Joshua Almond, the 13th Southeastern Photography Invitational: A Sense of Place, the 33rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition and the two-venue Art from the Heart of Florida also shown at Heritage Center. Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Established in 2000, the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery highlights four to five exhibitions annually, featuring work by students, faculty and emerging artists and outreach programs. The gallery features display shelves where Ceramic Fellowship Students and Faculty show and sell their work, and also serves as a classroom and facility for member and community events with seating for 80. Some of the exceptional 2013 shows included Director’s Choice II; Sherri Bunye, Interstate 4: The Exits Less Travelled; Storytellers XVI: Geneva, Florida; the 31st SummerArtCamp Student Exhibition; and The Art of Fellowship in Painting & Drawing. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden The Contemporary Sculpture Garden, established in 1997, is located on the grounds at Crealdé School of Art’s main campus. A self-guided tour leads visitors through the attractively landscaped Crealdé campus and the Contemporary Sculpture Garden, featuring 68 three-dimensional pieces of outdoor art and educational panels. The sculptures are used to teach field trip children about the diversity of expressive styles and durable media available to the sculptor. The collection is curated by Senior Faculty Member and sculptor David Cumbie. Oil painting by Sean Sexton from the Crealdé exhibition ‘Art from the Heart of Florida’ 12 Galleries & Lecture Series “I had the pleasure of attending a reception held in my honor at the Heritage Center during my November 2012 visit to speak at Rollins College through the Winter Park Institute. In addition to a warm welcome, I witnessed the high quality of the exhibitions that shed light on local and national African-American experiences through documentary photography and the arts. The Heritage Center is certainly a beacon of light that brings dignity to the community, as well as inspiration to all who visit from near and far.” — Martin Luther King, III The Heritage Center Gallery Established in 2007, the Heritage Center Visiting Exhibition Gallery at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center campus hosts three to four annual exhibitions that explore local history, cultural preservation, the African-American experience and Southern folklore, through educational and visual arts mediums including documentary photography, painting and textiles. Exhibitions in 2013 included Sewn Together: Photographic Quilts Reflecting the Family Ties of Eatonville, Maitland and Winter Park; Preaching to the Trees and the Animals: The Folk Art of O.L. Samuels; and Art from the Heart of Florida. The Permanent Collection Gallery at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center, established in 2007, features The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park as well as the Hannibal Square Timeline juxtaposing significant local and national historic events impacting African Americans. The center also hosts a collection of communitycreated artworks that are the result of collaborations with noted folk artists Mr. Imagination, Ruby C. Williams, Missionary Mary Proctor and quiltmaker Lauren Austin, among others. Traveling Exhibitions Exhibitions created as a result of Crealdé's award-winning outreach and gallery programs become part of our archives and are available to travel to other venues for display. Storytellers exhibitions are shown in the participants’ home communities and in Crealdé’s Community Gallery, and have been loaned to the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee, the Orange County Regional History Center, Osceola Center for the Arts in Kissimmee, and various locations of Central Florida “Lee Avenue Homes” photograph by DeAngelo Boys & Girls Clubs. Semipermanent displays (on long- Jackson from Storytellers XV term loan from our collection) are on exhibit at community centers and other grass-roots organizations throughout Central Florida. The 1998 exhibition, The Last Harvest: A Tribute to the Life and Work of the Lake Apopka Farmworkers, is a photography and oral history project funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council. It has traveled the state of Florida since 1998, most recently to the Cornell Museum of Fine Art at Rollins College, Orlando City Hall, Orange County Public Library Main Branch and the African American Museum of Art in DeLand. 13 Outreach and Scholarships “I have worked with Crealdé in one form or another since 1989, and I know the organization well. The quality and quantity of the school’s classes and exhibitions has substantially grown over the years. ... As a member of the Hannibal Square Advisory Board, I am aware of the many visitors this cultural center attracts from both Central Florida and the nation. It has been such a staggeringly successful art space that many folklorists, community arts facilitators, and cultural center directors contact me to ask about its history. It is truly a national model for a locally engaged heritage center. ” — Kristin Congdon, UCF Professor Emerita, Philosophy and Humanities S ince 1995, Crealdé has taken the opportunity to use the visual arts as a means of connecting communities, fostering cultural awareness and promoting understanding. As part of its mission, Crealdé’s outreach programming sustains an unwavering commitment to serve every community we enter. Our outreach and scholarship programs emphasize working with underprivileged children, at-risk teens and low-income senior citizens. Each class or project introduces the student to the specific art medium, then, through a public exhibition or installation, shares the participants’ achievements with the community. Crealdé outreach programming includes the following: Storytellers Teen Documentary Photography Program Ten-week classes use photography to give students ages 13 to 17 an opportunity to express themselves in pictures and words, while exploring their cultural heritage, neighborhoods, families and friends. Since 1996, Storytellers has been funded by six different private foundations, resulting in 16 completed projects and exhibitions at community sites. While the finished projects become part of Crealdé’s Archive of Community-Based Documentary Photography, the individual exhibitions are frequently loaned for display at the facilities of our community partners. The most recent Storytellers program engaged students from the Seminole County community of Geneva in partnership with the Rural Heritage Center. Neighborhood Pride Public Murals Since 2000, Crealdé has produced seven privately funded murals throughout Central Florida. During these eight-week classes, young students ages 10 to 14 collaborate to create a public mural in their own community, helping to beautify as well as increase awareness of important themes such as non-violence, education, family and cultural heritage. In addition to the young painters developing their own styles and individual modes of expression, the program helps bring segments of the community together to create better understanding. A testament to Crealdé’s commitment to public art, the “Celebrating Community Pride Mosaic” is outside the Winter Park Community Center; photograph by Bill Carpenter 14 Outreach and Scholarships “The O.L. Samuels exhibition is a great example of your continually providing outstanding, ongoing and relevant cultural experiences for the community. It reflects on your overall commitment as leaders in your field with a vision of artistic excellence that translates well for the surrounding and greater community.” — Kran Riley, President, Orange County Branch, NAACP Monument Builders Since 2001, young sculpture students have collaborated with their instructors to construct a permanent outdoor piece of art in neighborhoods throughout Central Florida. Themes include cultural heritage, non-violence and drug-free living. The latest collaborative sculpture, a 12-footlong, 4-foot-high Memory Wall created in 2008 with Mr. Imagination, a Pennsylvania-based African-American folk artist, was installed at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. The Memory Wall, holding objects donated by community residents, is Winter Park’s first collaborative public art sculpture. Art Samplers for Children and Seniors Eight-week classes provide 15 students per class, ages 5 to 10, with handson instruction in the fundamentals of painting and drawing, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture. The classes are offered at the John H. Bridges Community Center in Apopka, the Maxey Community Center in Winter Garden and the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park. Youth Scholarships The Alice Jenkins Scholarship Fund, founded in 1988 in honor of the wife of Crealdé’s founder, provides free classes from our regular curriculum to an average of 100 economically disadvantaged children and teens each year. In 2013, 15% of our highly successful Summer ArtCamp seats were awarded to scholarship recipients. Scholarships are awarded to students from as close as Winter Park and as far as the farmworker communities of north Orange and south Lake counties. The fund is replenished annually with contributions from private foundations and individual donors. Crealdé Campus Field Trip Program Over 2,417 second- and third-grade children from Orange County Public Schools (92%) and private schools (8%) annually participate in a field trip to Crealdé. The children spend the morning at Crealdé, where they create a masterpiece to take home during a hands-on workshop, observe professional artists at work, and tour the gallery and sculpture garden. Free Programming at Area Events Hands-on workshops were offered in painting, drawing and sculpture at more than a dozen community festivals and Crealdé open houses in 2013, including the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and Winter Park Autumn Art Festival and the Orlando International Kids Fringe Theatre Festival. 15 Civic Vitality “I am delighted to write on behalf of the exemplary programs of Crealdé School of Art. The agency has a long history of supporting this organization and their grant applications have always received high marks. ... I was impressed with both the Heritage Center facility and its exhibitions. The exciting potential of this area was matched only by the enthusiasm of the director, Peter Schreyer. The Hannibal Square Heritage Center truly embodies our own value statement, ‘Culture Builds Florida’.” — Dr. Gaylen Phillips, Director, Division of Arts & Culture, State of Florida Economic Development and Community Partnerships Crealdé has been committed to creating civic vitality through the arts since its founding. This commitment has brought Crealdé into a position of leadership in the Central Florida Community. Crealdé has a track record of successful long-lasting partnerships, creating over 45 collaborative projects in the past decade. The organization’s programs—from children’s classes to exhibitions and public art projects— increase social, cultural and even environmental awareness and understanding among people of all ages, races and ethnicities. By celebrating the history and voice of a community through the visual arts, the Heritage Center has gained the attention of many Central Floridians. Crealdé has recently built programmatic and marketing partnerships with the Winter Park and Oviedo/Seminole County Chambers of Commerce, the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, the Hannibal Square Merchants Association and other local businesses and cultural institutions. Our advocacy for the African-American community of west Winter Park led the city to embrace the idea that west Winter Park is a historic community, worthy of preservation. The City of Winter Park has since re-branded itself as “the City of Culture and Heritage.” Expanding Services to West Orange County and Lake County Winter Garden has demonstrated its leadership by transforming itself from a languishing agricultural community to a thriving city, with a focus on quality of life through the arts and culture, historic and environmental preservation, balanced with economic development. In August of 2010, Crealdé began offering a limited number of painting, drawing and photograpy classes at the Jessie Brock Community Center, a newly renovated recreation center near the historic downtown area. Located 15 miles west of Crealdé’s main campus in Winter Park, it has successfully attracted students from the growing communities of Ocoee, Winter Garden, Windermere, Dr. Phillips and Clermont. After only four years, participation has been so successful that, one out of 10 Crealdé students is enrolled at the Winter Garden center. Creating Opportunities for Florida Artists and Businesses Crealdé provides part-time employment for over 50 artists as adjunct, associate and senior faculty members; the addition of a Winter Garden site for Crealdé courses has increased the need for more instructors. In addition to an administrative staff of seven (three full-time and four parttime), the programming for each of the school’s four artistic departments is planned and administered by a part-time department director, who also teaches and uses studio space in the respective facility. A monthly stipend is also paid to a Senior Gallery Curator for the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery and to the Curator of the Contemporary Sculpture Garden. In addition, Crealdé annually hires at least four guest curators and an average of 10 guest artists (mostly Florida artists), as well as a minimum of five outreach instructors and public art lead artists as independent contractors to instruct special workshops and projects. The estimated impact on the local economy, apart from tuition, is more than $1 million annually. 16 Civic Vitality Crealdé also contracts with multiple local service providers for materials, exhibition, marketing and facility needs. By early 2010, Crealdé completed (and paid for) over $220,000 campus improvements, including roofing, drainage control, new greener air conditioning units for the Jenkins Gallery, the painting and photography studios and the office, sidewalks and some wonderful and very visible landscaping. This included the creation of a new front entrance to the central campus area and the Contemporary Sculpture Garden. The entire campus was repainted and stucco repairs to the 35-year old walls were completed. Decorative roof tiles were replaced and the Photography classroom was renovated. Promoting Tourism Through the Heritage Center Since its opening in 2007, the Heritage Center has received seven $40,000 Cultural Tourism grants from Orange County as well as annual grants from the City of Winter Park’s Community Redevelopment Agency ranging from $30,000 to $40,000. The Heritage Center is located in the heart of a thriving retail and restaurant district, surrounded by cultural attractions as mapped out in the Heritage Center brochure. Evidenced by our support letters from local businesses and spending data, Crealdé has made substantial efforts to support our local economy. Our programming and marketing efforts to attract tourists have been increasingly successful. Survey data provided by Americans for the Arts shows the Heritage Center’s economic impact: $667,924 in total spending with an out-of-town spending of $554,835, and a 17 to one return on investment. Crealdé artists demonstrate a bronze pour at the annual Night of Fire special event that draws over 500 visitors to the Crealdé main campus 17 Emerging Artist Programs “At Crealdé, I gained from being taken seriously as an artist and interacting with other students who shared my serious commitment to artistic growth. ... Telling pepole I was a Crealdé Studio Artist for two years has earned me automatic respect and opened doors. The Crealdé name is invaluable. — Robert Ross, Crealdé Studio Artist Emerging Artist and Professional Development Opportunities C realdé School of Art offers students opportunities to develop themselves into professional artists. Through the Crealdé Fellowship Program, the Studio Artist Program and two adult scholarship programs, students can receive mentorship, access to studios and free classes. In 2013, 157 of Crealdé’s tuition-based (non-outreach) courses were free of charge to children, teens and emerging artists through work/study and scholarship programs offered by the school - a tuition value of over $31,000. All students also have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work at the two annual art sales and the student exhibition. Currently, Crealdé is researching online store possibilities for which emerging artists could market their work. Crealdé’s portion of the proceeds would be used to fuel ongoing efforts to support emerging artist programs. The Fellowship Program Crealdé’s fellowship work/study program, established in 1978, is at the heart of the success of Crealdé’s on-campus activities and festival participation. These dedicated students maintain the studios, help in children’s classes and hands-on workshops off campus, and are the core of Crealdé’s artistic community. Over two dozen Crealdé fellows volunteer a minimum of 32 hours per session each, assisting with classes and events, and Tuni Winter Park as captured by Photography Fellow in exchange may take Laurie Hagemaier classes at no cost and have unlimited studio use. Studio Artist Program Established in 1996, the Studio Artist Program is designed for advanced students, former Crealdé fellows and emerging artists from the community whose goal is to pursue a professional career in the arts. Two positions per year are made available in each of Crealdé’s three artistic departments for applicants recommended by a Crealdé staff member. Studio Artists show the results of their work in a biennial exhibition. Adult Scholarship Programs Established in 1999, The Visiting Scholarship Program enables two area college students to attend each of the 20 to 30 scheduled workshops per year at no charge. The Cheryl Bogdanowitsch Sculpture Scholarship, funded by Central Florida artist Cheryl Bogdanowitsch, provides an annual $1,000 scholarship for classes, workshops and studio use to an adult sculpture student. 18 2013 Attendance Statistics Total Registrations for Adult and Youth Curriculum (4 to 8 week classes, workshops and ArtCamp) Paid in Full Member and Non-Member 3,181 Complimentary Classes for Fellowship & Scholarship Students 157 Life Drawing Sessions 774 Total Registration Attendance for 20134,112 Outreach Art Classes and Workshops Orange County Public Schools Studio Field Trip Program “What Heritage Means to Me” Field Trips at Heritage Center Private Schools Studio Field Trip Program Heritage Center After School Art Classes Heritage Center Senior Classes (with Seniors First Lunch Program) Heritage Center Exhibition-related community workshops Maxey Comm. A. in 1934 from the University of Florida and was awarded a post-graduate scholarship to study art in Florence, Italy, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He traveled Italy and Germany, where he created figure and landscape paintings for several years. Upon his return, he established an art school in Columbus, Georgia. He made a modest living painting portraits and presented one-man exhibitions in Columbus and Atlanta, in Gainesville, Florida, and in New York City. In 1942 he married Alice Moberg Jenkins after meeting her in Mexico, where he studied silversmithing. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, Mr. Jenkins received an honorable discharge after contracting pneumonia. Sent to the Veterans Administration hospital in Orlando to recuperate, he was inspired to establish rehabilitative art therapy classes for veterans. For several years he worked for the VA in Winter Park and Tallahassee, where he earned a master's degree in psychology from Florida State University. Upon his return to Winter Park, he established Jenkins Construction and built many of the city's residential communities and shopping centers. He was active in the community, serving as Winter Park City Commissioner, president of the Home Builders Association, commander of American Legion Post 112, president of the Sons of the American Revolution in Orlando and founder of the Orange County Advisory Council on Aging. "Even as we blossom and grow, we never lose sight of what Bill Jenkins intended for Crealdé. We are dedicated to keeping his dream alive." Peter Schreyer, Executive Director In 1975, Mr. Jenkins established Crealdé School of Art. He donated the organization and the property to the community in 1990. He also donated $600,000 to the University of Central Florida in 1986 to establish the Jenkins Chair, which he intended as a vehicle to bring the spirit of broadbased visual arts education into the academic environment. In 1988, Mrs. Jenkins passed away. In her honor, Crealdé established the Alice M. Jenkins Scholarship Fund, dedicated to providing art education to economically disadvantaged young people who otherwise might not have the opportunity to explore their creativity. In 1995, Crealdé dedicated and renamed its educational art gallery, the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery, in honor of its founders. William Sterling Jenkins traveled the world, prospered in many careers, recorded his travels and experiences in beautiful paintings, and made a permanent impact on the Central Florida community. He passed away on March 30, 1996, at the age of 86. His love for art and people live on through Crealdé. We strive to carry out his dream to make art an integral part of community life and a force in the lives of individuals. Executive Director Peter Schreyer affirms, "Even as we blossom and grow, we never lose sight of what Bill Jenkins intended for Crealdé. Even during his failing health, Mr. Jenkins stayed in close contact, attending gallery openings and sometimes just visiting to stroll the grounds and witness his work still in progress. We are dedicated to keeping his dream alive." 23 Balance Sheet For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2013 Current Year – 2013 Previous Year- 2012 Assets Current Assets Cash and Cash Equivalents Marketable Investments $ 29,099 $ 31,997 $23,118 $27,688 Other Current Assets $ $ 4,386 Total$ 63,663$55,192 2,567 Long Term Assets Land, Building, and Equipment Total Assets $1,085,379 $1,086,932 $1,149,042 $1,142,124 $ 31,712 $ 31,952 Liabilities and Fund Balances Current Liabilities Accounts Payable Fixed Loan$159,060$174,288 Other Payables $ 28,017 $ 7,444 Total$218,789$213,684 Fund Balances Fund Balance$766,314$766,314 Year to Date Net Income $163,939 $162,126 Total Equity$930,253$928,440 Total Liabilities and Fund Balance 24 $1,149,042 $1,142,124 Financial Statement For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2013 Revenue Membership Tuition and Fees Interest/Dividend Income United Arts Government grants Foundation grants General donations Corporate Donations Fundraisers In-Kind Income Miscellaneous Total Unrestricted Restricted Total 2013 Total 2012 $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 28,640 549,247 4,346 22,350 17,687 54,603 14,115 29,855 52,670 12,208 785,721 $ $ $ $ $ 70,000 $ 28,200 $ 34,320 $ $ $ 1,071 $ $ 133,591 $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 28,640 549,247 4,346 22,350 87,687 28,200 88,923 14,115 29,855 52,670 13,279 919,313 $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ 31,488 557,618 3,212 47,752 91,061 35,780 68,094 5,000 44,518 57,860 24,207 966,590 $ 182,770 $ - $ 182,770 $ 195,051 $ $ 457,181 639,950 $ $ - $ $ 457,181 639,950 $ 499,430 $ 694,481 Administrative Expenses $ 276,842 $ - $ 276,842 $ 271,527 916,792 $ - $ 916,792 $ 966,008 $ 2,520 $ 582 Program Expenses Facility and Gallery Artistic Salaries and Materials Total Programs Total Expense $ Net Income 25 Crealdé School of Art For Fiscal Year 2013 Actuals Earned vs. Contributed Income 26 Earned and Contributed Income 27 Members and Contributors Membership listings as of June 1, 2014 INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS Effective Financial Services Inc. Our mission is to enrich communities by investing in art, science and history. We serve arts, sciences, history and other cultural providers benefiting Central Florida residents and visitors. We do this by raising and distributing funds for arts and cultural institutions and by providing management, administrative and advisory services. Since our founding in 1989, and through the generosity of our donors, United Arts has invested more than $126 million in local organizations and cultural education, and through them, the diverse and energetic community that is Central Florida. We are deeply grateful to all of our donors and community partners for their investment in this industry of creativity and service to our community.
