If you’ve never played in one of these events, you’re in for a unique experience. The five-hole course will be beautifully illuminated, and while the glow balls don’t go as far as a normal golf ball, they’re easy to find. The format will be a four-person scramble with a shotgun start just after twilight. Entry fee for this event is $45 per couple plus cart for members and $55 plus cart for guests. The entry fee includes all the glow ball supplies, golf fees, special glow ball punch and prizes. The deadline to enter is firm––Tuesday, Aug. 10––so the Golf Shop can order glow ball supplies. GOLF SHOP: 614-410-1399 It’s been rain and heat . . . in abundance by Kyle Frederick Course Superintendent T his summer has been one of constant weather extremes for the Rattlesnake Ridge maintenance crew. We’ve had torrential rains that have washed out bunkers and flooded fairways and greens. For example, on July 22, right before the MemberMember Championship, we got hit with one and a quarter inches of rain in about 30 minutes. When it wasn’t raining over the last two months, we had periods of consecutive days of intense heat, which increases the problem of turf diseases as well as baking out areas of the fairways and roughs. Overall, the course has come through fairly well thus far, although it’s been a challenge. It does seem that Delaware County gets hit particularly hard when it comes to rainstorms. Consider this: Rattlesnake Ridge received 7.4 inches of rain from June 1 through June 16, a result of 12 separate storms. During that same period, Port Columbus registered 3.57 inches. In July, a submerged cart path to the first tee. A.J. Hawk would’ve been right at home. Following that, from June 17 through July 31, we got 6.01 inches of rain. Average temperature for that period was 86.5 degrees, and 11 days were above 90 degrees. In 2009, we had only five days with temperatures 90 or above. Since June 17, at least 35 days have been 85 degrees or higher. More importantly for course disease concerns, most nights have remained above 70 degrees. Very humid, sticky nights mean more disease and less recovery time for stressed plants. He’s also used herbs and peppers to flavor mayonnaises, sauces and soups. Okra was cause for cooking up some chicken gumbo twice in July. The menu for the Aug. 21 Ladies’ Day Invitational (with a Jimmy Buffet/ Margaritaville theme) has been set. It includes corn and blue crab chowder, a Florida Caesar, several appetizers, a choice of crab cakes or jerk chicken and, as usual, weather, the course is heading into the cooler fall season in pretty good shape. We have some important maintenance jobs coming up that members should be aware of, foremost being the aeration of greens on Monday, Sept. 13, and Tuesday, Sept. 14. If things go well, we might reopen the course on Tuesday afternoon; otherwise it will be reopened on Wednesday. Thanks to all you members who help keep the course in good shape by replacing divots and repairing ball marks on the greens. We appreciate it. At the end of July, Chef turned Ohiogrown blackberries into an especially lovely house-made blackberry ice cream. If it appears on a future Specials Menu, don’t miss it. The 2010 Wine List, new in the spring, has been well received, with the Brancott Sauvignon Blanc, a product of New Zealand, being a particular favorite, according to Chef Brandon. Half-bottles are finding favor, too, with more available and good pricing. On the lunch Specials Menus, paninis continue to be popular, led by the Italian panini and the roast beef and cheddar. 12 SATURDAY FRIDAY 6 7 POT GAME Noon MEN’S BANDITS tee off by 11 am COUPLES’ TWILIGHT 6 pm MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS 13 14 POT GAME Noon PGA COUPLES’ GLOW BALL 9 pm 15 22 16 17 18 CLUB CLOSED LADIES’ TWILIGHT 6 pm shotgun MEN’S TWILIGHT 6 pm shotgun 23 24 25 CLUB CLOSED LADIES’ TWILIGHT 6 pm shotgun MEN’S TWILIGHT 6 pm shotgun 29 30 31 SENIOR & LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB CLOSED LADIES’ TWILIGHT 6 pm shotgun 19 26 20 21 POT GAME Noon MEN’S BANDITS 8 am shotgun COUPLES’ TWILIGHT 6 pm LADIES’ DAY INVITATIONAL 1 pm shotgun 27 28 POT GAME Noon MEN’S BANDITS tee off by 11 am WINE & NINE 6 pm SENIOR & LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Chip-off decides Member-Member survive a one-hole playoff with Tom Owens and James Helgreen in flight fter two shootout holes, one to get to the overall the teams of Jon shootout. He began growing-in the course in 2000, almost a year before its opening in 2001. Assistant Superintendent Chuck Linville started work at the club soon after, and will have been here 10 years on Sept. 15. These two have been instrumental in making Rattlesnake what it is today, which is one of the bestconditioned courses in the area.
