The company began to build iron ships with steam engines in 1872. Papenburg had around 20 shipyards in 1860 – only MEYER WERFT survived into the 21st century. Up to 400 seaworthy ships were registered in Papenburg in the 19th century. In between the two World Wars, the shipyard mainly built trawlers, pilot vessels and lightships as well as passenger ships for coastal travel. In 1960, the company began gas tanker construction and in 1964 Papenburg's first Ro-Ro ferry, the MALMÖ, was delivered. Over the past decades, MEYER WERFT has acquired an excellent international reputation through the construction of car and passenger ferries, Ro-Ro and passenger ships, gas tankers and luxurious cruise ships in particular. Shipyard History Family business for seven generations The company has been owned by the Meyer family for seven generations. Bernard Meyer has been leading the company since 1982. In May 2012 Dr. Jan Meyer was appointed Managing Partner. Willm Rolf Meyer 1795–1841 Franz Wilhelm Meyer 1841–1876 Joseph Lambert Meyer 1872–1920 Bernhard Meyer 1920–1924 Franz Joseph Meyer 1920–1951 Godfried Meyer 1951–1977 Joseph-Franz Meyer 1941–1998 Bernard Meyer from 1982 Jan Meyer from 2012 5 6 Shipyard History From paddle steamers to the first passenger ship The first passenger ship of the shipyard: The Triton paddle steamer, year of construction 1874. The freight and passenger steamer Graf Goetzen, year of construction 1914. This MEYER WERFT ship gained worldwide fame in the Hollywood film African Queen. The ship was broken down into parts after being completed and was taken to the African Lake Tanganyika where it was put together again under the supervision of Meyer Werft engineers. The ship is still in use under the name of Liemba after almost 100 years. The Elbe 1 lightship was completed under the toughest conditions, shortly before the end of World War II. Today the museum ship can be admired in Cuxhaven. The Mauritius was delivered in 1955. The ship transported both freight and passengers. The Mauritius was a reference ship for new international markets, e.g. Indonesia. One of the Frisia ships, which were built by MEYER WERFT for the ferry link to the East Frisian Islands. Shipyard History 7 Ships which made history right from the start . . . The first MEYER WERFT cruise ship. In 1985 the shipyard successfully entered the field of cruise ship building with the Homeric for the shipping company Home Lines. Never before had a ship of this size been launched sideways. The government steamboat Herzogin Elisabeth from 1902. 8 Shipyard Facilities Europe’s most advanced shipyard Meyer Werft MEYER WERFT was the first compact shipyard in Europe and is one of the most advanced shipyards in the world. The two construction halls together with the modern production facilities and the concept of short distances make the shipyard so successful. Short distances – this applies in terms of organization with swift decision-making procedures and in physical terms of distance in the yard itself. The second construction hall was extended by 120 metres in 2008 so that the yard can continue to build ever larger ships. Just in Time Computerized logistics minimize storage space and reduce operating costs. The TESS material flow system works with bluetooth technology to control all material flow in the yard. Each component is in the right place, with the right person, at the right time. This guarantees shortest transport distances, minimum empty runs and precise just-in-time supply. For decades, MEYER WERFT has been a pioneer for operational environmental protection in shipbuilding. Emission reductions, a sophisticated environment management system and the avoidance of pollution are a matter of course for the shipyard. Shipyard Facilities The shipyard premises Sketch of the shipyard premises Cross section of the construction dock 9 10 Shipyard Facilities The largest laser centre in Europe Meyer Werft With the MEYER WERFT Laserzentrum, the shipyard has established the largest laser centre in Europe. Six large laser facilities with a capacity of 12kW each constitute the centrepiece of the new steel construction centre. Laser welding has been used at MEYER WERFT since 1994. MEYER WERFT developed a special process, the so-called “laser-hybrid” welding. The benefits of using a laser in steel construction are higher speed, less warping due to limited exposure to heat, improved strength and the associated considerably lower costs in comparison to traditional welding techniques. Shipyard Facilities 11 The new pipe centre of MEYER WERFT Automatic bending and flanging machines provide high levels of efficiency With numerous investments in new machines and facilities as well as a comprehensive new organisation, the modern pipe centre was commissioned at the start of 2012. By strengthening these peripheral units as highly technical, sophisticated stand-alone plants, competitiveness has significantly improved. 250 km of pipes and numerous technical facilities cater for supply and disposal on board The computer-operated pipe store 12 Shipyard Facilities Shipbuilding in its most effective manner Meyer Werft The 600 and 800 tonne cranes enable a high degree of flexibility in the preliminary installation of the blocks. The blocks are built and pre-fitted right next to the construction dock, then they are moved to the dock with the crane and welded to the ship. Cutting Edge Technology and Advances Shipbuilding in Papenburg operates according to the “building block principle”. Sections are made from steel sheets and blocks are made from sections. Approximately 70 blocks, weighing up to 800 tonnes, make up a ship. The technical equipment is also pre-assembled wherever possible before it is added to the ship. Thanks to the modular design made up of individual, premanufactured blocks, the ship can be built within a short time. Shipyard Facilities Transportation of a block with two flat-bed trailers Block Pre-fitted section Panel (deck) Steel sheet and profiles The Edge in Quality The automated panel route is the centrepiece of the steel construction. In the stage preliminary to the block building, the tailored steel sheets are processed into sections with profiles, beams and side walls. Around eight to ten sections make up one block. The high tolerance of manufacture is essential. 67 66 65 61 58 52 62 60 57 55 53 49 45 39 25 11 14 16 59 56 54 51 47 43 36 24 23 07 10 13 15 50 48 46 44 41 35 34 22 21 04 06 09 12 42 39 37 33 32 31 30 20 19 02 03 05 08 29 28 27 26 18 17 01 64 40 Block plan: Breakdown of a large cruise ship into different steel blocks of up to 800 tonnes 63 13 14 Environment Environmental management Meyer Werft MEYER WERFT is committed to protecting the environment. Consistent environmental management is one of the business priorities and a key factor for sustainable development. Using resources in a considerate manner is not only beneficial to the environment but also reduces costs. In order to maintain and improve the high corporate environmental standards, the shipyard holds a continuously open dialogue with its employees, suppliers, customers and research institutes. In order to operate in Alaska, very strict exhaust emission regulations must be adhered to. Cooperation at all levels is an essential component for a successful environmental protection policy. Through effective environmental management monitoring, the company is engaged in a continual improvement process. Effective environmental protection and sustainable development can take place when living, working and business conditions are not only economically, but also ecologically and socially just. ❑ You can find further information in the Sustainability Report of MEYER WERFT ❑ www.meyerwerft.de –> responsibility Expertise & Know-How 15 Expertise & know-how from experience People are the heart and the soul of a company. This is particularly true of MEYER WERFT – a family company with a tradition in management as well as with the employees. The group employs approx. 2,500 employees in Papenburg and more than 400 in RostockWarnemünde. Shipbuilding means carrying out largescale projects which are technically and logistically demanding. Computer-assisted technologies for the design (CAD), planning, construction and manufacturing (PLM) of the ship are used in all working areas of the shipyard. MEYER WERFT in Papenburg 2012 16 Expertise & Know-How Engineering service Meyer Werft 3D drawings help to optimise dimensions and effectively coordinate team work. Shipbuilding is a modern industry which unites all new technologies such as satellite communications, multimedia, the latest stage technology as well as supply and disposal techniques in one product. Shipyards therefore need qualified employees. The continual improvement process improves productivity constantly. Quality takes utmost priority. Qualified and experienced laboratory staff use imaging procedues such as X-rays to inspect welds. The shipyard ensures the highest quality in shipbuilding following a set procedure and using the latest technology. In the laboratory Expertise & Know-How 17 Training and development Investing in the future Training is an investment in employees and the future. At the moment, MEYER WERFT trains approx. 270 young people in 11 different vocations on a yearly basis. In addition the shipyard provides constant training and development for employees in order to guarantee their top position in the long term. MEYER WERFT employs 350 highly qualified engineers and technicians. The design offices for “Shipbuilding”, “Mechanical Engineering” and “Accommodation” are responsible for developing the design, calculations for stability and strength and technical drawings. Nearly every ship is unique in its way. “Research & Development” and “Sales & Design” are already busy today in designing the ships for tomorrow, alongside novel production methods and innovations. 18 Shipbuilding Technology Computer-assisted technologies continuous development Specialist shipbuilding, in particular the construction of large passenger and cruise ships is very demanding both technically and logistically. Computerassisted technologies for the design, planning, construction and manufacturing of these ships are integrated in all areas of the shipyard. Shipbuilding in Papenburg is a cutting edge industry. Floating hotels with every on-board facility are built here. In cooperation with the aviation industry, MEYER WERFT broke new ground even back in the 80’s: today, the adaption and use of the CATIA computer software has enabled new methods for producing 3D drawings to optimise ship design. This equipment is constantly being further developed for the requirements of shipbuilding with business partners Dassault and IBM. Shipbuilding Technology 3D view of the main engine Computer graphics from the heart of a ship CAD drawing to plan out pipelines and cable trays 3D view of a swimming pool . . . and an outside cabin Simulation in the Virtual Reality room 19 20 Shipbuilding Technology Cruise shipbuilding Meyer Werft In the mid-80‘s, the shipyard started cruise shipbuilding with the Homeric. By 2016, nearly 40 luxury liners between 40,000 and approx. 170,000 gt will have been built in Papenburg. The Keel Laying – old traditions are still observed in shipbuilding despite the latest technology: a “lucky penny” was always placed under the new keel before the work started. Today it is a “lucky cent” and the tradition continues. When the ship floats out it is in its new element. The final touches are made to the interior in the fitting-out quay. The river conveyance of a cruise liner from Papenburg to the North Sea is always a really spectacular occasion for spectators and the media alike. Often more than 100,000 people gather to witness the event. In the early ‘90s, the depth of the river Ems had to be adapted to the constantly growing size of the ships built in Papenburg. During the laying of the keel, the lucky penny is placed underneath the first steel block Shipbuilding Technology 21 References 40 cruise ships *Gross tonnage = approx. 3.25 m3 Name Shipping company gt* Year Norwegian N.N. Pelni Successful cooperation P.T. Pelni The business connection with Indonesia has been in place since as early as the 50‘s. From 1983 to 2008, MEYER WERFT built what was probably the world‘s biggest series of passenger ships for the island state of Indonesia. Since then, 24 ships have provided a regular service between the islands, thereby contributing significantly to the improvement of the infrastructure of Indonesia. In summer 2006, Meyer WERFT won the contract for the construction of another passenger ship for Indonesia. Based on the design of the type 2000 ship, a new kind of design was developed which factored in the increased transport capacities. The new ship, completed in 2008, can transport over 1,500 passengers along with almost 100 containers. Having carried out 27 conversions, the shipyard is regarded as one of the market leaders in this field. The transportation of live animals on ships is subject to very strict international regulations. Countries like Australia in particular have issued strict animal welfare requirements for this type of transportation. Powerful ventilation systems, special deck coverings and the installation of special ramps for the animals guarantee the best animal protection when loading and unloading as well as during transportation. In April 2000, MEYER WERFT delivered the Al Shuwaikh to the shipping company KLTT from Kuwait. The conversion of the ship with a capacity of 80,000 sheep was carried out under the leadership of MEYER WERFT in cooperation with its sister company NEPTUN WERFT. The final fitting-out of the ship, which included the installation of feeding, drinking water and ventilation facilities as well as the laying down of a special deck covering, was carried out by MEYER WERFT.
