Faster is better, and with high-speed (broadband)
Internet you’ll be connecting to the Web and surfing
at lightning speeds. No more tying up your phone line
with a dial-up connection, high-speed Internet keeps
you connected 24/7. Switch now and discover all the
benefits:
• Faster e-mail.
• Faster Web surfing.
• Faster downloads of music and video.
• Dedicated connection (no sharing a line with your
phone).
What is broadband?
Broadband Internet access, which is also known as high-speed
Internet access or just “Broadband”, is a way of connecting to the
Internet at a much faster speed. It’s also more reliable than dial-up
connections.
that are around 50 times faster than they experience with a dial-up
connection. WiMAX Internet can generate about the same speeds
as ADSL usually, which means speeds from about 64 kb/s to 2048
kb/s are typical. However, our mobile 3G-EVDO connections can go
as fast as 3100 kb/s.
How does fixed broadband work?
With fixed broadband, your computer is connected to the Internet
through a modem which is hooked into a cable network. Generally,
this same network can also be used to provide other services, such
as telephone or fax services.
Do I need a second phone line if I’ve high-speed Internet?
No. Many dial-up customers have two phone lines so that they can
use the Internet while also having phone access. With any broadband service, you can do that without having another phone line.
What types of high-speed Internet access are available from
Telcom Namibia?
While there are a number of high-speed Internet services technologies available, the most common are fixed broadband (WiMAX,
ADSL), and mobile broadband (3G-EVDO).
Will I be able to use my broadband connection while I’m
traveling?
Yes. The 3G-EVDO service is mobile and can be used in places
where there is Telecom network coverage. However, the broadband
connections powered by ADSL and WiMAX systems are not mobile
and are installed in a home or office environment.
What hardware do I need for my PC to work on Telecom Namibia’s network?
Any PC or MAC with an Ethernet (Network) Card and suitable Operating System can work on TN’s network. Most personal computers
(PCs) have this card built into them.
Where is high-speed Internet available?
Availability varies, but it’s available in all the major towns throughout
Namibia. To determine availability in your area, please visit your nearest
Teleshop and the customer support agents will be able to provide you
with a list of broadband services available in your area.
How fast is high-speed Internet?
The speed of the Internet connection varies depending on the chosen package and other factors. Generally, a user can expect speeds
How much does high-speed Internet access cost?
The monthly fees associated with broadband Internet services vary
depending on the type of package that you select. They can range
telewave • August/September 2009
from as little as N$199 per month (64kb/s) to N$2,749 per month
(2048kb/s) depending on whether it’s a home package or business
package. Besides the monthly fees, you also have to pay a line
rental fee for the phone service..
Installation generally takes 11 working days after the application is
submitted; and you should be just waiting for a representative to
contact you for installation. If this isn’t the case, you need to contact
your nearest Teleshop.
What is a monthly fee?
The monthly fee is the amount that you are charged per month for
the high-speed Internet service that you select. This amount is a flat
rate
What other equipment do I need for high-speed Internet?
Depending on the type of package you select, your equipment
needs will vary. Generally, Telecom Namibia will be able to provide
all equipment necessary for the installation. All you need to provide
is a computer or laptop.
What is an installation fee?
Telecom Namibia does charge to have a technician come to your
home or business to connect you to the high-speed network. The
fee is N$222 in town and N$333 out of town (rural) per installation
of a new line. If a broadband connection is to be provided on an
existing telephone line, the conversion is done free of charge.
What is a set-up fee?
There is no charge from Telecom Namibia of activating the Internet
service in your home.
Where do I get customer support for my Internet service?
You will need to contact your service provider directly for customer
support related to your broadband Internet service.
Who can assist me if I’ve technical questions?
If you already have high-speed Internet service, then you need to contact our Customer Contact Centre with technical questions at 1100.
Can I connect multiple computers to my high-speed connection?
Yes. You can connect multiple computers in your home to the same
high-speed connection.
How can I protect myself from viruses?
a. Use a firewall - The first and most fundamental step you can
take to protect your system is to install a firewall. By having
properly configured and updated firewall software operating on your PC,
you can stop hackers and other unauthorised system use.
b. Use anti-virus software - Make sure you install appropriate software to
protect your PC and then keep it active and up to date.
c. Be wary of e-mail attachments - Many viruses, worms, hoaxes,
trojan horses and other forms of malicious software still spread themselves via e-mail, usually as attachments. Unless you trust the sender
and you’re absolutely sure what is in the attachment, don’t open it.
How long does a broadband installation take?

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL INTERNET USERS
Telecom Namibia would like to inform its Broadband
Internet customers that the out-of-bundle bandwidth usage
on all Postpaid Mobile Internet Packages (3G-EVDO) will
be charged as from 1 August 2009. At the same, we also
want to share the good news about our new completely
unlimited and uncapped Broadband Internet Plans that
you as a customer can select to suit your monthly budget
and enjoy your time on the Internet.
Reduction in Out-Of-Bundle Postpaid Rate
Good news is that Telecom Namibia has decided to reduce
its out-of-bundle rate for its Postpaid 3G-EVDO broadband
packages as well as usage charges for Prepaid Packages to
50 cents per Megabyte as from 1 August 2009. It means
Postpaid customers will pay 50 cents for every additional
Megabyte downloaded over and above the data allotted
for their packages, while Prepaid customers will enjoy a
per Megabyte rate of only 50 cents. This makes Telecom
Namibia’s out-of-bundle rate the lowest in the Namibian
market.
Charging for Out-Of-Bundle Usage on Mobile
Broadband Packages
Yes, it is official! Telecom Namibia will be charging for
out-of-bundle usage on all postpaid Mobile Broadband
Services as from 1 August 2009. The company has not
been doing so in spite of the fact that these 3G-EVDO
services were priced and introduced each with a specific
maximum usage limit. In order to keep track of your usage
and be aware where you stand in relation to your usage
quota, please call 1100 toll free to be provided with the
required information.
No Capping On All Fixed Broadband Services
The good news is that all of Telecom Namibia’s Fixed
Broadband subscribers can access all the amazing
information available on the world-wide web, send and
receive email both locally and worldwide, do business online, and more with no limits on usage at a flat rate. This
incredible offer is to be enjoyed by all ADSL and WiMAX
customers.
New Unlimited Mobile Broadband Internet Package
But do you need more Internet time? Telecom Namibia now
offers you unlimited access to its fastest mobile Internet
service – also known as 3G-EVDO service, anytime where
there is network coverage, for a very attractive price of
N$ 999 per month, subject to a 24 months contract.
With our new Unlimited Mobile Broadband Plan, customers
enjoy unlimited access to the Internet, with no limits on the
amount of data volumes at a fixed monthly fee. This is so
far the cheapest and only unlimited fast mobile Internet
service in Namibia. All you need to do is drop into any
Teleshop and sign-up immediately to benefit from this
deal.
For more information, please contact your nearest
Teleshop or the Customer Contact Centre at 1100 toll
free.

The third ICT Summit hosted by Telecom Namibia from the 8-9 July this year was described by exhibitors
as a huge success. About 800 stakeholders in the ICT sector attended the two day event in Windhoek
which was held under the theme: “ICT – Visualising the Future – Confronting the Crisis.” telewave
interviewed some of the exhibitors/sponsors about their impressions of the Summit.

“The ICT Summit is of great benefit to Salt
as it creates grand business opportunities.
This is our second time to participate in
this event and this year we’ve once again
walked away with many leads, which
will grow our customer base as well
as reconnecting Salt with the industry
in general. The Summit is the perfect
platform for exposure to our potential
customers, who can most benefit from
Salt’s products and services.”
“It’s all about building business
relationships and taking the new
information technology to the people
who come to the ICT Summit. I’ve also
noticed that the uptake of people have
increased this year as compared to last
year, so the Telecom Namibia ICT Summit
is definitely bigger this year.”
“The opportunities at the Summit are
there for us to market our IT solutions
much more. Sometimes it’s difficult to
speak to the end user so it fortunate
that Telecom Namibia hosts such a

Caller ID
You can tell who is calling even before answering your phone.
If you have a Caller ID phone at home, then an amazing thing
happens every time your phone rings…
Caller ID, or “Calling Line Identification (CLI),” is a service provided
by Telecom Namibia. This service displays the phone number of the
person calling you. You can tell who is calling even before answering
your phone.
This effectively means anyone who has a telephone handset capable
of handling CLI can see who is calling them and answer calls
selectively on that basis, but also to reveal the number of their last
caller - and call them back if desired.
Benefits of this service are many.
•

You Will Never Be Caught Off-Guard.
Puts you in control.
Lets you decide which calls you want to answer.
Discourages nuisance calls.
Caller ID is a free service from Telecom Namibia. But to have the
number of a caller displayed is only possible if:

You apply for the Caller ID service
Have a CLI compatible telephone
The exchange serving the customer supports Caller ID (e.g. the
service can’t work on old telephone systems).

interview
Benedictus Ipinge System Administrator at Telecom Namibia has always had a passion
for information technology (IT). In this interview with telewave Ben, as he’s affectionately
known, said he’s enjoying his career at the company for the past two years.
What is your job all about?
I deal with servers, mainframe, software
applications and hardware resources, which
are highly critical for the system uptime and
service availability.
What is your typical work day like?
It ranges from verifying system checks, going
through alarms generated on the platform,

databases and checking whether billing
and other system reports are successfully
delivered to external platforms for
processing.
What makes you tick?
I like testing my skills against new
challenges because it helps me grow
as a person.
What is your secret to success?
My formula is hard work, persistence
and continuous learning.
What are your goals and
aspirations?
I’d like to improve my skills and offer my
best to Telecom Namibia by obtaining
international recognised certifications in IT.
What is the best piece of career advice
12
telewave • August / September 2009
you’ve ever received?
The best advice has been to follow a career that interests
me most and doing what I really like.
What do you do for fun?
I’m a sports fanatic, more specifically soccer as well as
a bit of rugby and formula 1.
What book(s) do you like to read?
Apart from technological magazines, currently
I’ve been reading inspirational and attitude
adjustment books. You know, to add to that
never-die-spirit in oneself.
Any advice to aspiring youngsters?
If hard work and persistence worked
for an average guy like me, with a bit of
talent you can excel beyond Namibia’s
ICT market.
What’s the one thing that people don’t
know about you?
I do a bit of graphic and web designing to
exercise the creative side of my brain.
What three things are the most important
to you and why?
Being alive and healthy, having a positive
