In Paris, Cristiano Ronaldo’s battle-hardened Portugal stands between hosts France and a victory in tomorrow’s Euro 2016 final at Stade de France. The stadium was targeted by suicide bombers during France’s friendly against Germany last November in attacks across Paris that left 130 people dead. It cast a black shadow over the tournament, but following a joyous semi-final victory over Germany, France aim to prevail in a third major final on home soil after the 1984 European Championship and 1998 World Cup. In London, home hope Andy Murray will aim for a second Wimbledon title when he takes on Canadian giant Milos Raonic in the summit clash. Meanwhile, the Tamilnadu government today said it was in a position to sell surplus wind power generated in the State and urged the Centre to allocate dedicated transmission capacity on a priority basis for its evacuation. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the wind season in the State was from June to September and presently, 4400 mw of this power was being utilised in Tamilnadu Grid based on the evacuation infrastructure available. Photo: S RAVI NT Bureau Chennai, July 9: Asserting that Tamilnadu has already met its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and was in a position to sell 1000 MW of wind power to other States, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speed up the process of establishing the inter-State Green Energy Corridor (GEC). In a letter to Modi, a copy of which was released to the media here, she said, ‘Many States in India who are unable to meet the RPO, are now approaching Tamilnadu for assistance. To facilitate the sale of surplus wind power to the States in need of renewable energy, it is important that a dedicated interState Green Energy Corridor is established.’ Stating that the Power Grid Corporation already proposes to establish such an inter-State Green Energy Corridor, she urged Modi to instruct the Ministry of Power to speed up the process of establishing the inter-State GEC at the earliest to enable Tamilnadu to transmit renewable power of 1000 MW to other States, which are in need of such power. While dedicated infrastructure would take some time to be created, in the meantime, the Power Grid Corporation may be directed to allocate dedicated transmission capacity on a Will tomorrow be free of accidents? q City cops’ initiative to raise awareness on road safety TEN THOUGHTS The police has also released a ten point agenda to those hitting the roads tomorrow. KISHORE S Chennai, July 9: In an attempt to reduce accidents and create awareness on road safety, the Chennai city police has announced that 10 July (Sunday) will be observed as ‘Accident-Free Day’, and has also appealed the public to be extra cautious tomorrow. Speaking to News Today, Commissioner T K Rajendran, said, ‘We are trying to create an awareness among the public to minimise road mishaps’. ‘This will be a first of its kind awareness day to be held in Chennai’, said Joint Commissioner of Police, North Chennai Traffic, T R Ganesamoorthi. He said that vehicle checks will be done at several places across the city, right from 8 am to 8 pm. ‘Traffic police will distribute pam- Speaking to News Today, Commissioner T K Rajendran, said, ‘we are trying to create an awareness among the public to minimise road mishaps’ phlets to motorists and they will also speak to the people about precautionary measures’, added Ganesamoorthi. The department has advised motorists to carry all the necessary documents of their vehicles, since its personnel would be carrying out intensive vehicle checking. ‘Many States in India who are unable to meet the RPO, are now approaching Tamilnadu for assistance. To facilitate the sale of surplus wind power to the States in need of renewable energy, it is important that a dedicated inter-State Green Energy Corridor is established’ priority basis to evacuate the surplus wind energy available in Tamilnadu to other States this season, she added. Jayalalithaa said Tamilnadu was a pioneer in promoting Renewable Energy in the country. ‘Today, Tamilnadu, with an installed capacity of 7600 MW of wind power contributes about 27 per cent of the country’s total installed wind capacity. In addition, there is an installed capacity of 1142 MW of solar power’, she said. ‘Our goal is to add a further 4500 MW of wind power and 5000 MW of solar power over the next five years’, she added. Jayalalithaa said Wind energy was Trio held for robbery in Sowcarpet NT Bureau Chennai, July 9: Three persons were held by the city police on Friday, for allegedly looting Rs 19 lakh from the house of a businessman in Sowcarpet. Police sources said, Saravanan and Sudhakar from Ennore, and Naveendhar from Senkundram, were arrested for stealing money from the house of Surendhar Bothra. Police enquiries revealed that the trio got away with the cash from the almirah, while they were engaged in electrical repair work at the businessman’s house. Money amounting to Rs 11 lakh, a van and three twowheelers have been recovered from the three, added sources. 15 youth go missing, ISIS links suspected Meanwhile, an official release from the office of the City Police Commissioner read, ‘The rise in traffic accident deaths is a serious cause for concern throughout the world. Greater Chennai Police has been taking various steps to control the occurrence of traffic accidents and reduce fatal accidents in Chennai’. According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, Chennai recorded 1341 fatalities due to road mishaps in 2013, and the numbers reduced to 1046 in the year 2014. While in 2015, around 886 people have lost their lives in road accidents. ‘Though the number of fatalities have reduced through gradual enforcement, that alone is not enough as the public should also co-operate’, said an official. Thiruvananthapuram, July 9: At least 15 youths from Kerala’s Kasaragod and Palakkad districts who had travelled to the Middle East have gone missing for the last one month and their families suspect they may have joined the Islamic State. This informaton comes close on the arrest of a suspected ISIS operative based out of Tirupur, who was allegedly recruiting men for the terror organisation. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed the police to launch a probe into the matter (youth missing) urgently, Kasaragod MP P Karunakaran said. seasonal and generated at particular times of the year mainly from June to September in the State. Pointing out that the real benefit of renewable energy was only if it was actually generated and consumed, substituting conventional power, the Chief Minister said for this it was very important that adequate evacuation infrastructure was established. She said in this context, Tamilnadu decided to establish an intraState Green Energy Corridor and that she had written to the then Prime Minister on 16 September, 2013 seeking assistance from the National Clean Energy Fund to establish the intra-State Green Energy Corridor. ‘Based on financing from the NCEF and further assistance from the German aid agency, KfW, an intra-State Green Energy Corridor is well on its way to being fully operational’, she added. Jayalalithaa said normally the wind season was from June to September of every year which coincides with the South West Monsoon. During the current wind season, wind power to the extent of 4400 MW was being utilised in the Tamilnadu Grid based on the evacuation infrastructure which has been established, she added. 2 SATURDAY 9 JULY 2016 Bits Mad rush meet Travelling in suburban trains is not for everyone and you have to be ready to be pushed and pulled and do yoga poses while hanging on to something or someone. During one such rush hour, the ladies compartment was packed with sweaty passengers. Amid this, two strangers began socialising and exchanging numbers right in the middle of the compartment. It was hilarious to see them talk even while they were being pushed and pulled by other passengers. GREATER GOAL A liquor shop near Nanganallur railway station was a matter of concern for commuters. A young florist nearby had to guard herself from tipplers who caused her disturbances. When enquired why she continued to work there despite such circumstances, she said, ‘I am student, and I support my family. The money I earn here matters a lot, so I don’t mind the hindrances.’ & Pieces CHENNAI Chain snatching So, a dog is meant to guard a house. But at Tirusulam, it became victim of a theft. That day, the dog, sporting chain and collar, was having a merry time running around the house. After sometime, owners found that the chain and collar were missing from the dog and he was standing near the gate happily wagging his tail at a stranger, who had ‘relieved’ of its burden. Evening rounds Lately, at 6 pm sharp, a police van makes rounds at the shopping and residential areas of this neighbourhood, with a blaring siren. The noise of the siren is so heavy that it grabs the attention of everyone. A shopkeeper was telling his customer: ‘This sound is enough to alert trouble makers from a distance itself, so that they can go into hiding till the police leave the place.’ Contributions from Malavikka Sridharan, Kishore S. S Ben Raja, Nivedhika Krishnan, M Bhaskar Sai, Vinitha T S and Amreetha G. Alarmed! A young lad was walking out of a garment outlet in Velacheri after making purchase. It so happened that the alarms started buzzing, indicating unbilled items. This startled the shop’s securityman who came rushed towards the youngster. Soon, staff members at the counter realised that the fault was at the billing counter. The customer certainly looked a little annoyed, but didn’t want to make a fuss and departed the scene. Go Fast A man on a two-wheeler was travelling on Sembakkam Main Road. Suddenly he noticed a marriage procession going in front of him. As the road was too narrow, he was unable to overtake the slow moving crowd. Safety l(o)ast This correspondent was travelling by a share auto, while a man, his wife and daughter were co-passen- gers. The man had the toddler on his lap and was cuddling her. One of the passengers had to alight and as soon as she did, the door was shut and the baby started to wail. Only then it was noticed that her hand had got caught in the door lever. The shocked passenger apologised a hundred times but the baby’s mother started crying. The family alighted at the next stop for first-aid. The next week, while travelling by another share auto, the correspondent noticed a mother sitting next to the door, her toddler’s leg hanging out. Remembering the previous incident, the correspondent cautioned the fellow passenger. It is infuriating that at their age mothers have to be taught basic safety measures while travelling. Determined to go past them, the man ventured into the parallel streets. He turned left at the nearest cross street and went through various streets that were parallel to the main road. When he felt that he had advanced much forward, he decided to join the main road again. But by the time he came to the main road, the procession had already crossed him. So he again trailed behind it. In her second letter to Modi over the fishermen issue this week, she referred to Thursday’s arrest of 16 fishermen and their three boats by Sri Lanka and sought his personal intervention to secure their release. ‘I request your personal intervention to secure the immediate release of the 73 fishermen and 101 fishing boats, including the 16 fishermen and their three fishing boats apprehended yesterday from Sri Lankan custody,’ she said. Seeking ‘strong and decisive action,’ by the Centre, the Chief Minister said ‘the present situation cannot be allowed to fester in this manner.’ Expressing concern over the prolonged disuse of the fishing craft and gear lying with Sri Lanka, she said, such a condition will make them unusable and unseaworthy compounding the financial losses of the poor fishermen. She also demanded that the fishing boats to be given back to fishermen in a refurbished condition. She reiterated her request for an early, permanent and peaceful solution to the livelihood issue affecting lakhs of fishermen of Tamilnadu. Traders can file returns online NT Bureau Chennai, July 9: The State’s Commercial Taxes department has made arrangements for traders and dealers to file their monthly returns online from July 2016. Dealers can now go to https://ctd.tn.gov.in and file their returns every month, a press release said. As part of the department’s ‘total solution project’ under its “e-C Tax” initiative, traders and dealers have been able to get their registration certificates and other documents online, the release said. Extending the service, they would now be able to file their monthly returns online too. Training sessions To educate dealers and traders about the process, training classes are being made available at the head office of the department in each taluk; a help desk has also been set up at each office of the commercial taxes department to assist them, the press release said. The department has also set up a 24- hour toll-free helpline, 1800 103 6751, to resolve any queries of dealers. Doctors at SIMS perform rare surgery q Aortic replacement done without open operation NT Bureau Chennai, July 9: Dubbed as the first such surgery in India, an aortic replacement without open surgery has been carried out by the cardiac surgeons at SIMS Hospital. Speaking at the press meet here on Friday, chief of aortic surgery and cardiothoracic surgeon at SIMS Dr V V Bashi, said, ‘There were a lot of risks involved while performing this surgery. Only very few operations without open surgery has been done in our country. The aortic arch is an important blood vessel as it supplies blood to the entire body.’ The procedure was considered as the patient’s aortic arch had developed an aneurysm of about 5.5 cm that resulted in his renal failure. Hailing from Hyderabad, 53-yearold Kolla Sathyanarayana already had an open heart surgery for root damage. ‘We noticed that his aortic arch and the descending aorta were weak but we left it alone as often the aneurysm develops very slowly. But in one of the subsequent reviews, we noticed that the aneurysm was enlarging significantly. We do not perform surgeries until the aneurysm threatens to rupture the blood vessel,’ said Dr Bashi. After two months of assessment APP TO RESCUE OF ANIMALS q Engineer’s novel idea to save suffering creatures KISHORE S Chennai, July 9: Sagar Sheth, a 21-year-old resident of Adyar, Chennai, has paved a new way for rescuing animals in distress. Thanks to him smartphoneusers can just geo-tag the location of animals anywhere in the city. His ‘AnimApp’, which is available for Android users, works in collaboration with Blue Cross, Chennai, and tries to make a positive difference in the lives of animals. News Today caught up with Sagar Sheth recently. Sagar Sheth with pet animals Q: What made you to think up AnimApp? A: Though, initially, I was not much of an animal lover, I was drawn into the concept of equality among all species, which might appear as a far-fetched idea. Also, I would say that two instances made me think of working for animal welfare. One of them is when I saw a puppy in need of desperate help during an awareness marathon. Though around 1,500 people participated and ran past it, no one offered help but just felt pity for it. That was when I realised that people want to help, but they don’t know how to do it. Hence, I came up with AnimApp, which might solve the problem. Q: How should one proceed with AnimApp? A: It is very simple - just like booking a cab. People can take up to three pictures of an animal, which is in need of help, from anywhere in Chennai. Then they must select the tick mark on the top right corner, which would lead them to the next page in which they can select the animal name, the help it needs and severity of the need. That’s it, job done. They would get a call, and people from Blue Cross will attend to the issue right away by prioritising the ticket based on the severity of the animal’s condition. Q: How is the response for this initiative so far? A: The app was launched on 9 June this year and the response has been positive so far as we have attended 49 cases in this three weeks’ time. Though AnimApp can be downloaded from anywhere, its service is currently limited to Chennai. We have future plans to extend this service to other cities. Q: Being a civil engineer, how was it to develop an app? A: Right from my childhood, I was more attracted towards technology, and I would say Steve Jobs as my role model. I wanted to bring about a change for good, through technology. Though software was my cup of tea, I chose civil engineering due to various other reasons. 3 Judges number down, pending cases going up q Madras HC has only 36 judges against sanctioned strength of 75 M BALASUBRAMANI Chennai, July 9: The Supreme Court collegium should immediately give clearance to the recommendations given by the Madras High Court collegium on appointing new judges, considering the number of cases that are pending, says Bar Council of TN and Puducherry vice-chairman P S Amalraj. At present, there are only 36 judges (against the total sanctioned strength of 75), with another seven to eight retiring in the coming year. ‘The delay in the appointment of judges is because of the difference over key clauses of a document between the executive and judiciary which will guide future appointments to the higher judiciary,’ said Amalraj. According to latest data, the 24 High Courts in the country are short of 470 WHAT LED TO THE CONFLICT BETWEEN THE EXECUTIVE AND JUDICIARY? Parliament had enacted the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act to do away with the over-two-decade-old collegium system where judges appoint judges. The law was struck down by the apex court on 16 October last year. A Supreme Court bench, while deciding on ways to make the collegium system more transparent, had asked the Centre to re-draft the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) in consultation with the States. The MoP is a document which guides the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and the 24 High Courts. At present, there are two MoPs -- one for the apex court and the other for the high courts. The government had sent the MoP to the SC collegium in March. The CJI had returned the document in May raising objections on the various clauses. WHAT IS A COLLEGIUM? LAW MINISTER’S PROMISE Last week, then Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda had met Chief Justice of India T S Thakur to iron out differences but sticking points remain. Ravi Shankar Prasad, who has taken over as the Law Minister after the Cabinet reshuffle, said he will strive to find ‘common ground’ between the government and the judiciary on the issue of appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and the high courts. judges. At the beginning of the year, the shortage was of 443 judges, while in the later part of 2015, it was 392, says data available with the Law Ministry. SATURDAY 9 JULY 2016 As on 1 July, the Allahabad High Court has the maximum vacancy of 82 judges. The Punjab and Haryana High Court is short of 39 judges, followed by Madras (37), Andhra Pradesh/Telangana (36) and Karnataka (35). ‘In earlier days, notification would be sent as early as two weeks as soon as the admission of the case was made, but now, it takes up to two years. The Madras High Court collegium has selected 30 judges and has sent for the approval of the Supreme Court collegium. If approval is granted, the judges can be sworn-in within a week,’ explained Amalraj. The Chief Justice of the respective high courts and two other senior judges of the court comprise a collegium. They identify suitable candidates and recommend them for the appointment of judges of the court. The short-listed candidate will be scrutinised by the collegium of five senior most judges of the apex court, headed by the Chief Justice of India, before clearing the name for appointment. ‘Judges should be appointed based on their credentials and the collegium should decide on judges and then the list should be sent to the Supreme Court for consideration,’ said Madras High Court Advocates Association president Paul Kanagaraj. With only 36 judges at present, almost half of the positions are vacant out of the 75 in Madras High Court. Blend 4 SATURDAY 9 JULY 2016 WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS I Flying high t is indeed a matter of pride that India finally boasts of its own deadly Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA). The multi-role supersonic fighter will give the much needed shot in the arm of Indian Air Force apart from being a morale booster because it is an indigenous product. No doubt the project dragged on for almost 30 years, but with more Tejas aircraft joining IAF in the next two years, the much awaited replacement of the old Russian MiG-21s, nicknamed ‘Flying Coffins’ because of their poor safety record, will finally become a reality. Far too many aircraft and pilots were lost in multiple crashes of the MiG-21s. Hopefully the crashes would be a thing of the past with Tejas recording a flawless performance and no accident in 3,000 hours of flying. The 45 squadron, nicknamed ‘Flying Daggers’, will be getting a total of 18 Tejas aircrafts, including four trainers, by 2018. The good news could not have come at a better time considering that India’s fighter aircraft fleet, made up of a mix of Russian, British and French planes, is down to 33 squadrons as against IAF’s requirement of 45 to face Pakistan and China. Another reason to feel happy is that the Flying Daggers will give IAF the much required edge over the JF-17 aircraft jointly building by China and Pakistan. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) deserves kudos for developing Tejas and giving IAF more teeth to tackle any infringement of our country’s air space. Group Captain Madhav Rangachari, commanding officer of 45 Squadron, has already given thumbs up to the multi-role aircraft claiming that it was like being on the top of the world after flying the aircraft post its induction in IAF. The Tejas may have a long way to go provided there are no further delays in the development of the subsequent two versions — MkIA and Mk-II — in which some shortcomings are expected to be addressed. The next challenge will be to develop Tejas into a fully mature and dependable fighter. But putting aside the debate on why this aircraft was delayed inordinately, what the defence ministry needs to do is to keep up the tempo and ensure that the target of empowering the 45 squadron with 18 aircraft by 2018 is not missed. Along with this, work on the proposed naval version of the LCA, which is being developed, should be speeded up to boost Indian Navy’s strike capabilities when a variant of Tejas would fly off the deck of one of India’s aircraft carriers out at sea. When you start to shop at ‘ecommerce’ outlets you basically get yourself the life-long guarantee of being swamped by ad junk via app notifications, sms alerts, email announcements and what not. In fact, I am inclined to put down the steady rise in the pigeon population in and around my building to online firms perhaps trying to market their stuff by pigeon post. The thing is when you buy anything offline, the same shop may reach out to to you for more business. Online, things, however, work differently: You so much as log into an e-commerce site, immediately every internet merchant in the block starts spamming you. You might have seen this: When one dog in the neighbourhood, for some reason, starts to bark at something --- sometimes even at a desultory wind --- the other dogs, one by one, join the chorus and soon enough the entire area reverberates with the concerted cacophony of the canines. This is, broadly, the marketing strategy adopted by e-commerce entities. But who gives permission to these companies to spam you non-stop? The answer in one word is: You. I mean it must all be there in the ‘Terms and Conditions’ page, which you signed without reading at the time of registering yourself on the site. But you can take heart from the fact that you are not alone in this. Along with the Indian Constitution and Salman N Korea test-fires submarine-launched missile: Seoul SEOUL: North Korea appeared to have test-fi red a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), Seoul’s defence ministry said, a day after the US and South Korea decided to deploy an advanced missile defence system in the South. ‘The North launched what was believed to be an SLBM from waters off the (northeastern) port of Sinpo at around 11:30 am (0230 GMT),’ the South Korean defence ministry said in a press statement. No further details were immediately available. North Korea previously fired an SLBM on 23 April in a test hailed as an ‘eye-opening success’ by leader Kim Jong-Un, who at the time declared his country had the ability to strike Seoul and the US whenever it pleased. Saturday’s launch came after Seoul and Washington announced their decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence system, or THAAD, to the Korean peninsula and the North warned US sanctions against its leader amounted to a ‘declaration of war’. Tensions have soared since Pyongyang carried out its fourth nuclear test in January, followed by a series of missile launches that analysts said show the North is making progress toward being able to strike the US mainland. The plan to deploy the powerful THAAD system in South Korea has angered Beijing and Moscow, which both see it as a US bid to flex military muscle in the region. News of the deployment came after the US on Wednesday placed ‘Supreme Leader’ Kim on its sanctions blacklist for the fi rst time, calling him directly responsible for a long list of serious human rights abuses. Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children, the ‘Terms and Conditions’ page remains something that nobody has ever read fully down to the end. But one of these days when one of you actually make bold to read it, don’t be surprised if it reads something like this: “The undersigned, who will be hitherto referred to as ‘Moron’ because we don’t expect him to read this, grants the company unfettered rights to disturb the ‘Moron’ at any point, including on his honeymoon trip, while the Moron also authorises the company to seize his one or two, whichever is numerically higher, kidneys without providing any reason, and, while at it, the Moron further gives full access to his bedroom and also...” You might think that I am exaggerating. For your sake, I would like to think I am. Anyway, what are the typical spam messages that one gets these days? Special sale and offer announcements are understandably many (‘Get further 10% cashback on goods that are anyway marked lower than their cost price because this is not our own money but since some stupid VC has chosen to invest somebody else’s money and we might as well splurge it’). And there are the earnest spams asking your feedback about the goods and services of the place you shopped at. These days they want you to ‘rate’ everything. (‘On a scale of 1 to 10 how will you rate our rating scale?’) But the one spam junk that I am very fond of are the ones that I am besieged with whenever I order food via one of those apps. They carry minute-to-minute developments with regard to whatever I have ordered. The messages are usually tame stuff about when the food is arriving or why is it getting delayed. But if ever they send out what really happens all along, this would be more like it: 7.15 p.m.: Thanks for placing your order via ‘WhatSappadu’. 7.16 p.m.: We have placed the order for the same with Hotel Stomach Burn. 7.30 p.m.: Your delivery person Kalaiarasan has reached Hotel Stomach Burn to collect your parcel but is currently fighting vehemently with its manager for giving five more orders to deliver. He has already done 15 deliveries for the evening. If he stays the course, we will reward him handsomely with the ‘Employee of the Day’ badge later tonight. 7.35 p.m.: Kalaiarasan is now using extremely bad words. In this mood, you better tip him well or else he will ride his motorcycle over your crotons, or your mother-in-law if you are lucky, on the way out. 7. 40 p.m.: Kalaiarasan and the manager are still sparring verbally. Five more minutes, the naan you ordered, which was rubbery to start with, will be leathery by the time it reaches you. And if we were you, we wouldn’t even touch the malai kofta. It tasted foul yesterday itself. 7 45 p.m.: Kalaiarasan has quit and left the place in a huff. Don’t worry, in this trade people quit on an hourto-hour basis. 7. 50 p.m.: We are in the process of urgently recruiting delivery personnel. If you have any leads, pass it on. You get referral bonus points that will come handy to gain more referral bonus points. 8.00 p.m.: Your food is still lying at Hotel Stomach Burn, but as it is more than 45 minutes since you placed the order, we will run this message just to placate you: ‘Your delivery is being delayed due to unexpectedly high traffic along the route’. 8.01 p.m.: Huh! Since when high traffic in Vadapalani was unexpected? 8.15 p.m.: Sorry for the delay. But there seems to have been an earthquake, measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale, on just the road leading to your house. This is preventing our delivery person from delivering. 8.30 p.m.: Good news, the earthquake was only 7.5 on the Richter scale. 9.00 p.m.: We are surprised that you are still tracking this. Your food is anyway safe and will be used for some other order by somebody else on some other day. 9. 30 p.m.: Hah. Some hope at last. Kalaiarasan has rejoined us. In this trade people rejoin on an hour-to-hour basis. 9.31 p.m.: Whoops! He just landed an upper cut on the manager and walked away with the ‘Employee of the Day’ badge. 9.45 p.m.: Not that we need to tell you, but still: ‘Due to unforeseen circumstances we are unable to process your order and hence cancelling it and also closing down this app business itself’. e-mail the writer at balakumarkb@gmail.com (Courtesy: Talk Media) Dallas shooter was a loner Suspect amassed personal weaponry at suburban home, says top cop WASHINGTON: An Army veteran killed by Dallas police after he fatally shot five officers amassed a personal arsenal at his suburban home, including bomb-making materials, bulletproof vests, rifles, ammunition and a journal of combat tactics, authorities said Friday. However, Federer insisted he will be back at Wimbledon in 2017, when he will be pushing 36, despite his heartbreaking loss to Raonic Seven-time champion Federer turned his left ankle and jarred his left knee in the fourth game of the final set of his 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 loss. ‘I just I hope I didn’t hurt myself. Is it a three-day thing, is it a 24-hour thing or is it more? I don’t know at this point. I hope it’s not so bad,’ said the 34-year-old, who underwent surgery on the same knee earlier this year. ‘I walked it off. I was able to finish. But I don’t slip a lot. I don’t ever fall down. It was a different fall for me than I’ve ever had. ‘With the body that’s been playing up this year, I just hope I’m going to be fine. I believe I am, but I’ll know more tomorrow when I wake up.’ Federer missed the French Open this year because of a back injury. It was the first Slam he had been forced to sit out since 1999. Federer refused to blame the fall for his surprise defeat, which ended his hopes of a record eighth Wimbledon title and 18th major. He had been in control of the tie Milos Raonic and seemed destined to reach an 11th final at the All England Club, which would have made him the oldest man to get that far since 39-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1974. Federer had break points in the fifth and ninth games of the fourth set before slipping from 5-6, 40-0 with back-to-back double faults to hand Raonic a lifeline. ‘I just didn’t feel the same after the fall,’ he said. ‘Regardless, he played a great breakpoint to get the break. From then on, if I would have been fresh as a daisy or injured, maybe wouldn’t matter because he was serving 140mph anyway. ‘I had missed my chances by then. It was a very disappointing half an hour there for me, getting broken at 6-5, getting broken again at 2-1 in the fifth, having the slip. ‘Something went wrong. I can’t believe I served a double fault twice. Unexplainable for me really, yeah. ‘Very sad about that and angry at myself because never should I allow him to get out of that set that easily.’ Federer, who is now without a Slam since he captured a seventh Wimbledon in 2012, admitted Raonic deserved to be the first Canadian man to reach a Grand Slam final. ‘He earned it at the end. But I helped him so much to get back. I would like to see a tie-breaker because I was the better player for the fourth set,’ he said. ‘Then again, I know he’s great in breakers and all that, it was always going to be tough. But I would have liked to see him scramble more than that.’ Raonic hails McEnroe influence Milos Raonic has hailed the influence of coach John McEnroe after reaching his maiden grand slam final with a last-four victory over Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Having claimed the opening set, Raonic lost the next two to the 17time major winner. But the 25-year-old recovered brilliantly to come away with a 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory and is the first Canadian to reach a grand slam final. ‘It’s an incredible comeback from me really,’ he said. ‘I was struggling through the third and fourth set. ‘He was playing some great tennis, but I found a little opening and managed to finish it off.’ McEnroe joined Raonic’s coaching team in May to work on his grasscourt game and says the three-time Wimbledon winner has had a big influence. ‘What he told me today is to leave it all out there,’ he added. ‘I showed a lot of emotion out there, always positive, and I think that’s what got me through. Cardiff, July 9: Hundreds of thousands of supporters lined the streets of Cardiff on Friday to give a special welcome home to Wales’ European Championship squad. Chris Coleman’s team, featuring in a major tournament for the first time since the 1958 World Cup, exceeded all expectations by reaching the semifinals in France before being knocked out by Portugal. Fans greeted the players and backroom staff at Cardiff Airport before the squad went on an open-top bus parade through the city. ‘They are amazing scenes and we’ll never forget,’ said talismanic forward Gareth Bale. ‘It’s very special seeing what it means to the whole country. ‘It’s an incredible feeling and there is no prouder honour than putting on the red shirt for Wales and to share it with all these fans is incredible.’ Midfielder Aaron Ramsey was also moved by the welcome home. ‘To see all the support has been phenomenal,’ said Ramsey. ‘Because we have been away from it we haven’t seen the impact it has had back here. ‘We have heard from our families and stuff like that...but this is the first time we are experiencing any of this and it is really special.’ One member of the squad who missed out on the homecoming was midfielder Joe Ledley, who is in Ibiza to get married. Confident Murray has all to play for Federer-slayer Raonic guns for Slam glory London, July 9: Canadian Milos Raonic will not be Andy Murray the only man experiencing something new on Wimbledon’s Centre Court on Sunday -- for the first time Britain’s Andy Murray will start a grand slam final as favourite after crushing Tomas Berdych in the semis. Murray was seeded to meet world number one Novak Djokovic in another major showdown but the Serb’s shock early exit opened the door for sixth seed Raonic to reach his maiden grand slam final after making the semis two years ago. All 10 of Murray’s previous grand slam finals were against either Djokovic or Federer, which explains why the 29-year-old Scot has endured more than his fair share of pain and still only has two majors to his name. One of those defeats came against a sublime Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon final and a repeat of that duel was expected until the Swiss maestro lost to Raonic on Friday. With a 6-3 head-to-head career lead over the 25-year-old Raonic, Murray will be expected to get his grand slam collection rolling again, three years after beating Djokovic to become Britain’s first Wimbledon men’s singles champion for 77 years. Leading bookmakers were quoting Murray as 2-7 on favourite hours after he beat Berdych on Friday. According to Jayaram, the organisation will tie up with like-minded NGOs and present the findings before the Public Works Department and urge it to take concrete measures to benefit the people.
