GUIDE
2013
elcome to THAT OTHER Great Muskoka Season!
Y
ou haven’t played hockey until you play it on a frozen lake!
Come winter, Muskoka becomes a pictureperfect wonderland of snow-blanketed
pines, ice-covered lakes, and pretty rural
settings straight out of a Christmas card.
Were there’s no shortage of fun things to do
in all that white stuff. Whether your idea of
the perfect winter activity involves snuggling
up in front of a roaring fire at a cozy resort
or inn, or venturing out into the greatwhite-outdoors, Muskoka offers numerous
winter recreation opportunities.
Downhill ski and snowboard enthusiasts
should checkout Hidden Valley Highlands
Ski Resort, which gets an average 318cms
of snow each season – more than enough
to satisfy the 6500 skiers that hit the slopes
every hour on its 11 different runs, the
longest of which is 580m. For cross-country
skiers, Muskoka has more than 250 acres
of parkland, including Algonquin Park,
Arrowhead Provincial Park and Gravenhurst
KOA, as well as luxury resorts, all offering
groomed trails of varying lengths. Many of
these same trails are also available for the
increasingly popular sport of snowshoeing:
minimal equipment is needed and modern
snowshoes are light and easy-to-use, making
the sport fun for the whole family. Snowshoes can handle the deepest of snow,
opening up the backcountry for winter
hiking. For hardcore outdoor fans,
Algonquin Park offers excellent winter
camping opportunities, including rental of
heated tent-like structures called yurts.
Muskoka is also an important link in
Ontario’s extensive snowmobile network.
More than 1,600kms of trails crisscross the
region, and for those who don’t own a ‘sled’,
machine and equipment rentals are available
from most marinas. Along with your snow-
mobile, you’re also provided with a warm
snowmobile suit, boots, gloves and helmet,
as well as expert training before being turned
loose on the trails. Seeking more tranquil outdoor pursuits?
Most Muskoka communities have longestablished winter festivals, often hosted in
partnership with area resorts.
Other accessible activities include outdoor
public skating rinks, a skating trail at
Arrowhead Provincial Park where you can
also rent skates, pond hockey, ice fishing,
dogsledding, winter horseback trail rides,
horse drawn sleigh rides, and curling. And,
of course, the region offers many-a great hill
if you want to keep it simple and do things
the old fashioned way… all you need is a
toboggan, and a flask of hot chocolate to
help you thaw out.
M
uskoka is home to countless winter adventures!
Muskoka Snowmobiling.
In winter, Muskoka comes alive as
snowmobilers visit the region looking for
adventure in the great outdoors. Cottage
country lies in the middle of Ontario’s
extensive snowmobile network, and more
than 1600 kms of OFSC trails crisscross the
region, making Muskoka one of the most
traversed snowmobile destinations in the
world. Most area marinas and outfitters
offer machine and equipment rentals, as
well as permits and licenses. Many resorts
also offer snowmobile packages for experienced enthusiasts and novices alike, as well
as tours and introductory lessons.
Local snowmobile clubs have maintained
snowmobile trails in Muskoka and
surrounding areas for over 30 years. The
member clubs of District seven maintain a
1600-kilometre network of trails covering
some of Ontario’s most scenic landscape.
It’s not difficult to understand why
Muskoka is such a popular snowmobile
destination. As the first district north of
Toronto with real, consistent snow
conditions, the District seven trail network
provides snowmobilers with a spectacular
view of frozen lakes surrounded by snowclad hills, valleys and thick forests.
Whether your preference is short loops
or multiple day journeys, this large trail
network will provide you with unlimited
touring opportunities. Each route offers
snowmobilers a different riding experience
with a mix of scenic bush trails and wideopen areas. Muskoka is a hub of the Trans
Ontario Provincial (TOP) trail network
with a number of TOP trails intersecting
throughout the region. Snowmobilers never
need to worry about accessibility to services
because a variety of businesses providing
food, accommodations, fuel and repair
services are located along the trail.
District Seven’s large fleet of modern,
industrial trail grooming equipment
smoothes out the routes between communities. An extensive network of trail signs assist
riders in finding their destination. Snowmobilers are reminded that Ontario Trail
Permits are required on all OFSC Trails.
Three day, week and seasonal trail permits
are available at most lodgings, fuel or service
locations.
Visitors are reminded to always carry a valid
driver’s license and proof of ownership and
insurance when operating a snowmobile on
OFSC trails. Come see the thick forests, a
multitude of lakes, rivers, streams and hills
of granite. We guarantee your snowmobiling experience will be exciting and scenic.
Congratulations to Snowcrest
