GAME 23 Dec. 3, 2005 vs. Akron 1-1 NCAA Quarterfinals COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland Terrapins ad- vanced to their fourth-straight College Cup after advancing on penalty kicks over Akron in front of 4,129 fans at Ludwig Field. The top-seeded Terps played the Zips to a 1-1 tie before winning 4-1 in PKs. Maryland scored first on a Kenney Bertz goal to take the 1-0 lead, but Akron countered late with a score from Sinisa Ubiparipovic just before halftime to tie the score. The two teams traded chances throughout the rest of regulation and in overtime before moving on to penalty kicks. Stephen King stepped up first and converted his try for Maryland. Akron’s first shooter, Justin Sadler hit the post on his attempt. Goalkeeper Chris Seitz had a good jump on the shot and had the post covered if the shot was on frame. Chris Lancos and Yohann Mauger traded makes and Maurice Edu added another for Maryland, and Seitz again came up big with a save of Ossie Michalsen’s shot. With a chance to end the game, Maryland’s Marc Burch converted to give the Terps the 4-1 shootout victory. Akron opened the game with two solid scoring chances within the first four minutes of action. Both chances were off set pieces but were saved by Seitz. Maryland then took control with solid possession and playing deep in the offensive third. Maryland’s persistence paid off when the Terps were awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 21st minute. Chris Lancos sent the ball into the box where a Zip player attempted to clear the ball but hit it directly to the foot of Bertz who buried the shot for the score and a 1-0 lead. Akron picked up its play toward the end of the first half and got the equalizer in the 44th minute. Sadler worked down on the right flank and sent a perfect cross to Ubiparipovic who hit the ball with his right foot to knot the score at 1-1, which held up through regulation and two overtime periods. Graham Zusi put the Terps on top just before the half ended, and the Terps exploded for three goals in just over two minutes to start the second half to put the game out of reach. Jason Garey scored back-to-back goals in the 47th minute (the fastest consecutive scores in NCAA Tournament history) and Stephen King added a penalty kick after Maurice Edu was taken down in the box in the 49th minute. SMU countered on a goal from Paulo da Silva in the 55th minute after da Silva’s shot deflected off a Terp defender and redirected into the score. For the game, the Terrapin defense (playing without senior anchor Kenney Bertz) allowed just seven shots. Freshman goalkeeper made five saves on the afternoon - including four in the first half. The Terrapins controlled the early portion of the play creating opportunities for Garey. Garey took Maryland’s first three shots in the game, one of which was cleared off the line by a SMU defender. The Mustangs countered with chances of their own putting a shot on goal on a free kick and a blast from Duke Hashimoto, but both were saved by Seitz. SMU built two more dangerous chances in the box, but could not come up with the score. With time winding down in the first half, Glaudemans controlled the ball deep in the final third and worked to the endline where he sent a cross through the box that Zusi half-volleyed cleanly into the back of the net to give the Terps the 1-0 lead heading into the half. Maryland jumped out quickly to start the second on Garey’s 21st goal of the season. On the play, Robbie Rogers worked along the touchline and sent a cross to the near post where it was flicked to the far post to Garey for the score at 46:41. Just 15 seconds later, Edu stole a ball in the midfield and fed a streaking Garey where he beat the keeper for the 3-1 Terrapin lead. King capped off the Terp scoring with his 15th goal of the season on the penalty kick. The Terps claimed their first national championship since 1968. Jason Garey was named the tournament’s offensive MVP, and Chris Seitz was the defensive MVP. Maryland is the first team since 1992 to win the tournament as the No. 1 seed and Seitz is the first freshman goalkeeper to lead his team to the championship since 1990. The Lobos had the first good chance of the game early on a long throw-in and shot that was saved by Chris Seitz. The Terps then controlled the game and put pressure on the New Mexico defense getting several opportunities inside the 18-yard box. The Terps did not break through, though, until Burch’s free kick put Maryland up 1-0 in the game’s 31st minute. He took the free kick from 25 yards after Chris Lancos dribbled through the Lobo defense and was pulled down by a defender. Burch’s free kick made it through the wall and rolled into the lower left corner of the net. The Lobos countered with a pair of chances on a free kick of their own just outside the box. Seitz made a save on the shot and Josh Brown’s rebound missed just right. New Mexico had another scoring opportunity several minutes later on a corner kick, but Andrew Boyens’ header just sailed over the crossbar and the Terrapins took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Maryland held a sizeable 11-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes. New Mexico came out strong in the second half pushing forward and earned a penalty kick in the 50th minute after a Terp defender was called for a handball inside the box. Seitz got a beat on the shot and dove to his right and stopped the shot by Boyens. Maryland had a chance to push it to 2-0 with a flurry of activity in the 61st minute. Burch drew the goalkeeper off his line and in a scramble, the ball shot out to Stephen King, but a Lobo defender cleared the ball off the line. The rebound went to Jason Garey, but his shot missed high. The Terps held off the Lobos the rest of the way, limiting any chances for New Mexico. For the game Maryland out-shot New Mexico, 19-11. For Burch, it was his second game-winner of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. He also had the game-winning assist against St. John’s.
